Abstract

The spin and parity of the charmed mesons Ds⁎+, D⁎0 and D⁎+ are determined for the first time to be JP=1− with significances greater than 10σ over other hypotheses of 2+ and 3−, using an e+e− collision data sample with an integrated luminosity of 3.19 fb−1 collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. Different spin-parity hypotheses are tested via a helicity amplitude analysis of the processes e+e−→Ds⁎+Ds−, D⁎0D0 and D⁎+D−, with Ds⁎+→Ds+γ, D⁎0→D0π0, and D⁎+→D+π0. The results confirm the quark model predictions.

2. First observation of excited states in 120La and its impact on the shape evolution in the A ≈ 120 mass region.

Abstract

Excited states have been observed for the first time in the very neutron-deficient odd-odd nucleus 57 120 La 63. The observed γ rays have been assigned based on coincidences with lanthanum X rays measured with the JUROGAM 3 array and with A = 120 fusion-evaporation residues measured with the MARA separator. The observed γ rays form a rotational band which decays to the ground state via a cascade of four low-energy transitions. Based on the systematic comparisons with the heavier odd-odd La isotopes we assign spin-parity 4 + to the ground state and a π h 11 / 2 ⊗ ν h 11 / 2 configuration to the rotational band. The nuclear shape has been investigated by the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. Two quasiparticle plus triaxial rotor model calculations including the np interaction nicely reproduce the spin of the inversion between the even- and odd-spin cascades of E 2 transitions, giving credit to the np interaction as an important parameter responsible for the mechanism inducing the inversion. The position of the Fermi levels, in particular for neutrons, also has a strong impact on the observed inversion in the chain of lanthanum nuclei. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two rotational bands are identified in 119 Cs, one of which having very similar pattern to that of the strongly-coupled π g 9 / 2 [ 404 ] 9 / 2 + band. The properties of the bands with similar patterns extracted from the experimental data are in agreement with a chiral interpretation. Tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory with pairing correlations and particle-number conserving cranked shell model calculations are employed to determine the deformation and to investigate the band configurations, respectively. It results that the backbending is induced by the rotational alignment of two h 11 / 2 protons, whose angular momenta reorient from the short to the intermediate axis, in a plane orthogonal to the angular momentum of the strongly-coupled g 9 / 2 proton which keeps aligned along the long axis. The total spin points in 3D, inducing the breaking of the chiral symmetry. This is the first observation of candidate chiral bands built on a configuration with three protons, one in the strongly coupled [ 404 ] 9 / 2 + orbital which does not change orientation with increasing rotational frequency, and two in the h 11 / 2 orbital which reorients to the rotation axis. The bands are observed in the transient backbending regime, showing that the chirality in nuclei is a general phenomenon, being robust and present not only in nuclei with nearly maximal triaxiality and pure configurations, but also in nuclei with moderate triaxiality and mixed configurations which gradually evolve from one to three-quasiparticle configurations, like in the backbending region. Abstract

7. Fine structure in the alpha decay of U-223

Abstract

Fine structure in the alpha decay of U-223 was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction Re-187(Ar-40, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two alpha-decay branches of U-223 feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of Th-219 were identified by establishing the decay chain U-223 (alpha(1)) under right arrow Th-219 (alpha(2)) under right arrow Ra-215 (alpha(3)) under right arrow Rn-211. The alpha-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of U-223 was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62(-10)(+14) mu s. Evolution of nuclear structure for N = 131 even-Z isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced alpha-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of U-223 relative to its lighter isotones Ra-219 and Th-221 was suggested., QC 20200203

Abstract

High-spin states in 123 Xe were populated in the 80 Se(48 Ca, 5n) 123 Xe reaction at a beam energy of 207 MeV. Gamma-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Four new high-spin bands have been discovered in this nucleus.The bands are compared with those calculated within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov models. It is concluded that the configurations of the bands involve two-proton excita-tions across the Z = 50 as well as excitation of neutrons across the N = 82 shell gaps resulting in a large deformation, ε2 ∼ 0.30 and γ ∼ 5 • .

9. Tri-axial Shape Coexistence and a New Aligned Band in 178Os.

Abstract

The Os nuclei lie in the beginning of the transitional region between the well deformed rare earth and spherical lead isotopes. The nuclei in this region are believed to be soft to changes in gamma deformation due to the softness of nuclear potential which may result in the shape coexistence. The neutron Fermi levels in Os nuclei from A = 170 to A = 186 lie in the middle of i13/2 orbital so that their shape in the ground state tends to take an appreciable prolate deformation. Hence collective bands with the well defined moment of inertia occur and the effect of different proton orbitals is observed as a modulation of the prolate structure. The anomalies in the yrast sequence, an effect attributed to change in moment of inertia of the ground state rotational band and the band crossing phenomena, are very important and vary strongly with neutron number in case of Os nuclei. The nuclear structure of 178Os nucleus has been studied using the reaction 165Ho (20Ne, p6n) 178Os. Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) consisting of six Clover detectors with anti Compton shields was used for the detection of resulting gamma rays. The Direction Correlation of γ-rays de-exciting Oriented states (DCO) ratio and polarization of gamma rays were measured to assign spin, parity and multipolarity of transitions. Twenty one new transitions belonging to the 178Os nucleus have been identified. The sudden and rather strong gain in aligned angular momentum is observed in the yrast band of 178Os. A new aligned rotational band similar to 180Os is also discovered in this nucleus. This band exhibits a very complex decay pattern with a single linking transition of 1778 keV to the ground state band. The tri-axial shape co-existence is also observed in this nucleus at higher excitation. The experimental results are compared with the Microscopic Hartree-Fock model calculations. 10. DECAY PROBABILITY RATIO OF PENTAQUARK Θ+ STATE.

Abstract

The pentaquark state of Θ+(uudd&smacr;) has been observed to decay with two decay modes: Θ+ → nK+ and Θ+ → pK0. The decay probability ratio of the two decay modes is studied with general symmetry consideration of isospin, spin and parity. We arrive at a result of the ratio [This symbol cannot be presented in ASCII format]2L+1, which is valid for the Θ+ state to be a pure isoscalar or isovector state, or an isoscalar and isovector mixing state, or an isotensor state with mixture of isoscalar and isovector components with coefficients α and β. The dependence on spin and parity of the pentaquark Θ+ state is found to be small due to small difference between the center-of-mass decay momenta k1 and k2 of the two decay modes. We also provide an analysis on the constraint of the isospin of Θ+ from the absence of a peak in the pK+ invariant mass distribution in the γp → pK+K- process. Future experimental results about the decay probability ratio may provide information about the properties of the pentaquark Θ+ state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The g-factor of the ground state of 31Al (T1/2=640 ms) has been measured by the β-NMR technique on a polarized secondary fragment beam at GANIL, Caen, France. The measured value of |g|=1.517(20) is compared with sd-shell model calculations, which allows the assignment of spin and parity Iπ=5/2+ to this state. The spectroscopy of neutron-rich Al isotopes on the border of the “island of inversion” is discussed in terms of the persistence of the N=20 shell closure for Z=13 nuclei. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The decay of 218Pa was investigated by means of α and γ spectroscopy. The nucleus was produced in the fusion reaction 40Ar+182W and separated in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure). The known α decays of 218Pa were measured with improved precision and newly assigned to be originating from the ground state, which clarified the ambiguities in their previous assignments. In addition, a new isomeric state in 218Pa decaying with α -particle energies of 9691(15) keV, 9595(21) keV and a half-life of 135 − 32 + 62 μs was identified. The spins and parities of the involved states were tentatively assigned on the basis of the systematic α -decay properties of the odd-proton N = 127 isotones and shell model calculations. Abstract

Fine structure in the α decay of 223U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction 187Re(40Ar, p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two α -decay branches of 223U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of 219Th were identified by establishing the decay chain 223U → α 1 219Th → α 2 215Ra → α 3 211Rn. The α -particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of 223U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62 − 10 + 14 μs. Evolution of nuclear structure for N = 131 even- Z isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced α -decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of 223U relative to its lighter isotones 219Ra and 221Th was suggested. Abstract

This contribution focusses on recent measurements of nuclear moments and spins using two complementary methods. The ground state magnetic moments and spins of the exotic isotopes 49;51K have been measured at the ISOLDE facility at CERN using bunched-beam high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy. The re-inversion of the ground state spin from I = 1/2 in 47,49K back to the normal I = 3/2 in 51K has been established. At GANIL (Caen, France) the quadrupole moment of the 33Al ground state has been measured using the continuous-beam-nuclear magnetic resonance method applied to a spin-polarized beam produced at the LISE fragment separator. The large value establishes a very mixed wave function with about equal amounts of normal and neutron particle-hole excited configurations contributing to its ground state wave function.
