3. Pathological Changes Following Neoadjuvant Endocrine Therapy (NAET): A Multicentre Study of 391 Breast Cancers.

Abstract

Oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer (BC) is generally well responsive to endocrine therapy. Neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NAET) is increasingly being used for downstaging ER-positive tumours. This study aims to analyse the effect of NAET on a well-characterised cohort of ER-positive BC with particular emphasis on receptor expression. This is a retrospective United Kingdom (UK) multicentre study of 391 patients who received NAET between October 2012 and October 2020. Detailed analyses of the paired pre- and post-NAET morphological changes and hormone receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression were performed. The median duration of NAET was 86 days, with median survival and overall survival rates of 380 days and 93.4%, respectively. A total of 90.3% of cases achieved a pathological partial response, with a significantly higher rate of response in the HER2-low cancers. Following NAET, BC displayed some pathological changes involving the tumour stroma including central scarring and an increase in tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumour cell morphology. Significant changes associated with the duration of NAET were observed in tumour grade (30.6% of cases), with downgrading identified in 19.3% of tumours (p < 0.001). The conversion of ER status from positive to low or negative was insignificant. The conversion of progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2 status to negative status was observed in 31.3% and 38.1% of cases, respectively (p < 0.001). HER2-low breast cancer decreased from 63% to 37% following NAET in the paired samples. Significant morphological and biomarker changes involving PR and HER2 expression occurred following NAET. 10. Graphical User Interface Programming in Introductory Computer Science.

Abstract

Modern computing systems exploit graphical user interfaces for interaction with users; as a result, introductory computer science courses must begin to teach the principles underlying such interfaces. This paper presents an approach to graphical user interface (GUI) implementation that is simple enough for beginning students to understand, yet rich enough to demonstrate many important aspects of computer science. The GUI interface described is implemented using a library of C macros and provides a display window that outputs bit-mapped graphics and inputs mouse actions. The macro calls and conventions are described in the context of an implementation of Conway's Game of Life, a programming exercise found in many introductory texts. The GUI interface for the Game of Life program is detailed in the first section, in order to provide a concrete example of the capabilities of the simplified GUI library. The next section describes the life main function that sets up the buttons and associated callback functions; these callback functions are then presented. The last section gives an example of a simple paint program that can also be created using the GUI macro library. In addition, this paper considers how the material could be introduced in an Introduction to Computer Science course at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (New York). (AEF)

45. Ten Minutes Wide: Human Walking Capacities and the Experiential Quality of Campus Design

Abstract

Whether a campus is large or small, the idea of a 10-minute walk is an important human-scaled design standard that affects an institution in significant ways beyond just getting students to class on time. Designing a 10-minute walk seems like a simple exercise. Based on earlier information, all one needs to do is provide a walking surface and make it approximately 2,400 feet long. But in reality, this is a much more complex design problem. Beyond answering the question of "why" a 10-minute walk is important, many master plans fail to suggest "how" to effectively create one. The author reviewed 37 campus master plans and categorized all stated design goals for walking paths into three main categories: (1) functional; (2) aesthetic; and (3) experiential. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the experiential qualities of campus walks can be altered through physical design and the purposeful manipulation of the perception of time. More specifically, the intent of the study was to determine which objects along a path's route contribute to James's notion of "varied and interesting experiences" or constitute Rapoport's "high information trips" and subsequently alter the awareness and duration of time. A secondary purpose was to suggest how these findings can be applied to enhance the experiential nature of future campus walks. (Contains 6 figures.)

47. Assessing the Learning Value of Campus Open Spaces through Post-Occupancy Evaluations

Abstract

The idea that the physical design and configuration of a campus can elicit and support studying behavior has important ramifications, as all academic institutions underscore learning in their mission statements. This article evaluates the learning value, or ability of a campus space to support studying behavior, through the use of a post-occupancy evaluation. The findings suggest that specific physical design configurations and landscape elements may be influential factors in supporting studying within campus spaces. The results of this study indicate that campus designers and university officials should further examine the relationship between campus design and studying behavior to increase the learning value of campus spaces everywhere.
