This international collection of essays presents a contemporary overview of issues of sexual identity as they relate to teaching and learning in English from elementary through university levels. Coming from teachers in classrooms in India to North America to South Africa to Europe, the essays theorize lesbian, gay, and transgendered positions in the classroom, offer pedagogical strategies for teaching lesbian and gay studies, and examine the broader social and political contexts that shape classroom discourse and practices. Chapter 2 of the book "James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain: Historical & Critical Essays" is presented. It examined the representation of the homoerotic desire and redeployment of betrayal in the novel "Go Tell It on the Mountain." Instead of placing race, sexuality, gender or other axes of social positioning in parallel relation to one another, Baldwin focused more on questioning models of political solidarity and resistance based on an individual's membership in a particular social group.

The article presents the author's views on how the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, could be mourned as a gay icon. Except for Prince Edward, long rumoured to be gay, the Windsors had little appeal for me. Diana's death in 1997 forced me to look at her again, critically this time. A good deal of my earlier cynicism for the other royals had been heightened to contempt following their reaction to Diana's death. It was possible that Diana was a gay icon. I had once hoped that it would be Edward who would provide the initial queer trajectory for reading the current royal family; ironically, I have come to believe, it was Diana who did that and much more. Her own sexual identity is not at issue; rather, it is her monumentality that enables resistant and critical rereadings. For me, Diana's death captured and reshaped her image in my mind, so much so that she nearly became more mythic than real. During most of her adult life, except for that brief period following her separation from Charles, the queer aspects of Diana's image were difficult to ascertain as they were often socially obscured by official images of her connections to royalty.
