1. Data-driven AC Optimal Power Flow with Physics-informed Learning and Calibrations

Abstract

The modern power grid is witnessing a shift in operations from traditional control methods to more advanced operational mechanisms. Due to the nonconvex nature of the Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF) problem and the need for operations with better granularity in the modern smart grid, system operators require a more efficient and reliable ACOPF solver. While data-driven ACOPF methods excel in directly inferring the optimal solution based on power grid demand, achieving both feasibility and optimality remains a challenge due to the NP-hardness of the problem. In this paper, we propose a physics-informed machine learning model and a feasibility calibration algorithm to produce solutions for the ACOPF problem. Notably, the machine learning model produces solutions with a 0.5\% and 1.4\% optimality gap for IEEE bus 14 and 118 grids, respectively. The feasibility correction algorithm converges for all test scenarios on bus 14 and achieves a 92.2% convergence rate on bus 118., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 algorithm and 2 tables. 2. Complex Graph Laplacian Regularizer for Inferencing Grid States

Abstract

In order to maintain stable grid operations, system monitoring and control processes require the computation of grid states (e.g. voltage magnitude and angles) at high granularity. It is necessary to infer these grid states from measurements generated by a limited number of sensors like phasor measurement units (PMUs) that can be subjected to delays and losses due to channel artefacts, and/or adversarial attacks (e.g. denial of service, jamming, etc.). We propose a novel graph signal processing (GSP) based algorithm to interpolate states of the entire grid from observations of a small number of grid measurements. It is a two-stage process, where first an underlying Hermitian graph is learnt empirically from existing grid datasets. Then, the graph is used to interpolate missing grid signal samples in linear time. With our proposal, we can effectively reconstruct grid signals with significantly smaller number of observations when compared to existing traditional approaches (e.g. state estimation). In contrast to existing GSP approaches, we do not require knowledge of the underlying grid structure and parameters and are able to guarantee fast spectral optimization. We demonstrate the computational efficacy and accuracy of our proposal via practical studies conducted on the IEEE 118 bus system.

45. Traffic shaping in wireless home networks

Abstract

Many devices commonly found in wireless home networks such as smartphones, gaming consoles and media servers generate real-time traffic with stringent performance requirements. Since the wireless medium is mostly accessed in a distributed manner (DCF), sensitive traffic needs to be "protected". This work investigates how mechanisms defined in the WiFi standard such as virtual carrier sensing and CTS frames can enable this without requiring any modifications to end devices. ns-3 simulations of this scheme in typical wireless home network configurations show significant performance improvement in the delivery rate of prioritized nodes compared to those using plain DCF.
