Cerium substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) epitaxial thin films are prepared on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). It is observed that the films grown on GGG(111) substrate exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) as compared to films grown on GGG(100) substrate. The developed PMA is confirmed from magneto-optical Kerr effect, bulk magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Further, the magnetic bubble domains are observed in the films exhibiting PMA. The observations are explained in terms of the growth direction of Ce:YIG films and the interplay of various magnetic anisotropy terms. The observed PMA is found to be tunable with thickness of the film and a remarkable temperature stability of the PMA is observed in all the studied films of Ce:YIG deposited on GGG(111) substrate., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique has been used to study the magnetization relaxation processes and magnetic anisotropy in two different series of the Co2FeSi (CFS) Heusler alloy thin films, deposited on the Si(111) substrate by UHV sputtering. While the CFS films of fixed (50 nm) thickness, deposited at different substrate temperatures (TS) ranging from room temperature (RT) to 600^C, constitute the series-I, the CFS films with thickness t varying from 12 nm to 100 nm and deposited at 550^C make up the series-II. In series-I, the CFS films deposited at TS = RT and 200^C are completely amorphous, the one at TS = 300^C is partially crystalline, and those at TS equal 450^C, 550^C and 600^C are completely crystalline with B2 order. By contrast, all the CFS films in series-II are in the fully-developed B2 crystalline state. Irrespective of the strength of disorder and film thickness, angular variation of the resonance field in the film plane unambiguously establishes the presence of global in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. Angular variation of the linewidth in the film plane reveals that, in the CFS thin films of varying thickness, a crossover from the in-plane local four-fold symmetry (cubic anisotropy) to local two-fold symmetry (uniaxial anisotropy) occurs as t exceeds 50 nm. Gilbert damping parameter {\alpha} decreases monotonously from 0.047 to 0.0078 with decreasing disorder strength (increasing TS) and jumps from 0.008 for the CFS film with t = 50 nm to 0.024 for the film with t equal 75 nm. Such variations of {\alpha} with TS and t are understood in terms of the changes in the total (spin-up and spin-down) density of states at the Fermi level caused by the disorder and film thickness., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

A wide variation in the disorder strength, as inferred from an order of magnitude variation in the longitudinal resistivity of Co2FeSi (CFS) Huesler alloy thin films of fixed (50 nm) thickness, has been achieved by growing these films on Si(111) substrates at substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature (RT) to 600 C. An in-depth study of the influence of disorder on anomalous Hall resistivity,longitudinal resistivity(LR) and magnetoresistance, enabled by this approach, reveals the following. The side-jump mechanism gives a dominant contribution to anomalous Hall resistivity (AHR) in the CFS thin films, regardless of the degree of disorder present. A new and novel contribution to both LR and AHR characterized by the logarithmic temperature dependence at temperatures below the minimum, exclusive to the amorphous CFS films, originates from the scattering of conduction electrons from the diffusive hydrodynamic modes associated with the longitudinal component of magnetization, called diffusons. In these amorphous CFS films, the electron-diffuson, e d, scattering and weak localization (WL) mechanisms compete with that arising from the inelastic electron magnon, e m, scattering to produce the minimum in longitudinal resistivity, whereas the minimum in AHR is caused by the competing contributions from the e d and e m scattering, as WL does not make any contribution to AHR. In sharp contrast, in crystalline films, enhanced electron electron Coulomb interaction (EEI), which is basically responsible for the resistivity minimum, makes no contribution to AHR with the result that AHR does not exhibit a minimum., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We report the magnetic and dielectric behavior of Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5, a new compound comprising the honeycomb-like layers of S=1 spins, through detailed structural, magnetic and dielectric investigation. An antiferromagnetic-type transition at 25 K (TN) with weak-ferromagnetic behavior is revealed. Interestingly, a large value of coercive field of 1.32 T at 2 K is observed. The isothermal magnetization after zero-field-cooled condition, it exhibits the presence of large spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) with a magnitude of 0.19 T at 2 K; which is rare in single bulk materials, especially without external doping. The value of |HEB| further enhances to 0.24 T under 16 T field-cooled condition, confirming the presence of large exchange bias in the material. We report the structural and magnetic properties of a quantum magnet PbCuTeO5. The triclinic structure of PbCuTeO5 comprises of alternating layers (ab-planes), in which one layer is composed of S = 1/2 dimer chains and another layer is composed of S = 1/2 trimer chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility data show a Curie-Weiss behavior with an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (Theta_CW) of -165 K. At low temperature, both the heat capacity Cp(T) and susceptibility data show an anomaly at Tc = 6 K with a weak ferromagnetic (WFM) moment suggesting the appearance of long-range order. The magnetization vs. field M(H) data at 2 K also provide evidence for WFM behavior. Magnetic frustration with a frustration parameter f = Theta_CW/Tc of about 27 is observed. Magnetic specific heat data suggest the presence of a large entropy in the paramagnetic region, well above Tc, suggesting the presence of short-range spin correlations. We have studied the structural, magnetic properties, and electronic structure of the compound InCuPO5 synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure of InCuPO5 comprises of S = 1/2 uniform spin chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data shows a broad maximum at about 65 K, a characteristic feature of one-dimensional (1D) magnetism. The chi(T) data is fitted to the coupled, S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAFM) uniform chain model that gives the intra-chain coupling (J/kB) between nearest neighbour Cu2+ ions as -100 K and the ratio of inter-chain to intra-chain coupling (J'/J) as about 0.07. The exchange couplings estimated from the magnetic data analysis are in good agreement with the computed values from the electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory + Hubbard U (DFT+U) approach. The combination of theoretical and experimental analysis confirms that InCuPO5 is a candidate material for weakly coupled S = 1/2 uniform chains. A detailed theoretical analysis of the electronic structure further reveals that the system is insulating with a gap of 2.4 eV and a local moment of 0.70 muB /Cu., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, submitted Material Research Express
