This work investigated the thermal, morphological, and tensile properties of poly(l-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(l-lactide) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA)/thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends with 3 wt% citric acid (CA) treatment of TPS. The blends with PLLA-PEG-PLLA/CA-TPS ratios of 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, and 60/40 (w/w) were investigated and compared with PLLA-PEG-PLLA/CA-free TPS blends. Crystallizability of the blends decreased and thermal stability increased as the TPS content increased. The thermal stability of the blends was found to improve after CA treatment of TPS. The PLLA-PEG-PLLA/CA-TPS blends showed better phase compatibility than those of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/CA-free TPS blends. The tensile properties of the blends were improved by CA treatment of TPS. In conclusion, improvement in thermal stability, phase compatibility, and tensile properties of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/TPS blends was obtained by CA treatment of TPS. The resulting PLLA-PEG-PLLA/CA-TPS blends could potentially be used to prepare biodegradable and flexible bioplastics.

In this study, talcum was melt-blended with a flexible poly(l-lactide)-b-polyethylene glycol-b-poly(l-lactide) triblock copolymer (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) with 1, 2, 4, and 8 wt% talcum, for improvement of the crystallization and thermomechanical properties of PLLA-PEG-PLLA compared with PLLA. The crystallizability of PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum composites was better than that of PLLA/talcum composites as determined from differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffractometry showed that the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum films had a higher degree of crystallinity than the PLLA/talcum films. PEG middle-blocks and talcum showed a synergistic effect for crystallization of PLLA end-blocks. The PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum films showed better thermomechanical properties than those of the PLLA/talcum films as determined from dynamic mechanical analysis. This was confirmed from the results of dimensional stability to heat. In summary, the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/talcum composites have potential for use as flexible bioplastics with good dimensional stability to heat.

Polymer blends of poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with different blend ratios were prepared by a melt blending method. The thermal, morphological, mechanical, opacity, and biodegradation properties of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/HDPE blends were investigated and compared to the PLLA/HDPE blends. The blending of HDPE improved the crystallization ability and thermal stability of the PLLA-PEG-PLLA; however, these properties were not improved for the PLLA. The morphology of the blended films showed that the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/HDPE blends had smaller dispersed phases compared to the PLLA/HDPE blends. The PLLA-PEG-PLLA/HDPE blends exhibited higher flexibility, lower opacity, and faster biodegradation and bioerosion in soil than the PLLA/HDPE blends. The brittleness of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) bioplastic is the main disadvantage for practical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of high-molecular-weight PLLA- b -poly(ethylene glycol)- b -PLLA (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) block copolymers by ring-opening polymerization of LLA. The highly flexible PLLA-PEG-PLLAs were prepared by reactive melt blending with an epoxy-based chain extender formed as long-chain branched structures. The effects of PEG block length and content of chain extender were investigated. The results showed that the chain extension reaction reduced crystallinities of the PLLA-PEG-PLLAs. All the chain-extended PLLA-PEG-PLLA films had no phase separation. The lower crystallinities of PLLA-PEG-PLLA films obtained with higher contents of chain extender enhanced the film drawability. The longer PEG block length resulted in higher strain at break and lower stress at the break of PLLA-PEG-PLLA films. This research focuses on the crystallizability and melt flow property of linear poly(L-lactide) (1-PLL) by blending with star-shaped 16-arm PLL (16-PLL). The 1-PLL/16-PLL blends were chain extended during melt blending using an epoxy-based chain extender. The crystallinities of the 1-PLL/16-PLL blends increased with the 16-PLL blend ratio and chain extension reaction. The 16-PLL enhanced formation of branched PLL during chain extension was confirmed by thermogravimetry, and improved the melt flow property of the blends. Stresses at break of the compressed blend films were improved slightly by the 16-PLL blending and chain extension. In conclusion, the 16-PLL could be used as a nucleating agent and a melt strength enhancer for linear PLL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reports drug-loaded silk sericin (SS)/silk fibroin (SF) blend microparticles being fabricated by the water-in-oil emulsion solvent diffusion of a SS/SF aqueous blend solution. Blue dextran was used as the water-soluble drug model. The influence of the SS/SF blend ratio on the characteristics and drug release behavior of the blend microparticles was investigated. The blend microparticles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The blend microparticles were nearly spherical in shape as determined from SEM micrographs. The FTIR and TG results demonstrated that interactions between SS and SF molecules had occurred. The blend microparticles showed very high drug loading efficiency (94–98%) for all blend ratios. Thein vitrodrug release significantly decreased with decreasing SS blend ratio. The results demonstrated that the SS/SF blend microparticles could be used as biocompatible and biodegradable microparticles for controlled release drug delivery applications.
