1. Global Distribution of Serpentine on Mars

Abstract: The distribution and origin of serpentine on Mars can provide insights into the planet's aqueous history, habitability, and past climate. In this study, we used dynamic aperture factor analysis/target transformation applied to 15,760 images from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, followed by validation with the radiance ratio method, to construct a map of Mg-serpentine deposits on Mars. Although relatively rare, Mg-serpentine was detected in diverse geomorphic settings across Noachian and Hesperian-aged terrains in the southern highlands of Mars, implying that serpentinization was active on early Mars and that multiple formation mechanisms may be needed to explain its spatial distribution. We also calculated the amount of H2 produced during the formation of the observed deposits and conclude that serpentinization was likely more widespread on Mars than indicated by the observed distribution., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover discovered fine‐grained clastic sedimentary rocks in the "Hogwallow Flats" member of the "Shenandoah" formation at Jezero crater, Mars. The Hogwallow Flats member shows evidence of multiple phases of diagenesis including Fe/Mg‐sulfate‐rich (20–30 wt. %) outcrop transitioning downward into red‐purple‐gray mottled outcrop, Fe/Mg clay minerals and oxides, putative concretions, occasional Ca sulfate‐filled fractures, and variable redox state over small (cm) spatial scales. This work uses Mastcam‐Z and SuperCam instrument data to characterize and interpret the sedimentary facies, mineralogy and diagenetic features of the Hogwallow Flats member. The lateral continuity of bedrock similar in tone and morphology to Hogwallow Flats that occurs over several km within the western Jezero sedimentary fan suggests widespread deposition in a lacustrine or alluvial floodplain setting. Following deposition, sediments interacted with multiple fluids of variable redox state and salinity under habitable conditions. Three drilled sample cores were collected from this interval of the Shenandoah formation as part of the Mars Sample Return campaign. These samples have very high potential to preserve organic compounds and biosignatures. Drill cores may partially include dark‐toned mottled outcrop that lies directly below light‐toned, sulfate‐cemented outcrop. This facies may represent some of the least oxidized material observed at this interval of the Shenandoah formation. This work reconstructs the diagenetic history of the Hogwallow Flats member and discusses implications for biosignature preservation in rock samples for possible return to Earth. Plain Language Summary: The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover discovered sedimentary rocks in Jezero crater during the second year of its mission. Some of these rocks were informally named the "Hogwallow Flats" member of the "Shenandoah" formation. These rocks contain abundant clay minerals and sulfates, indicating ancient interactions with liquid water. They may preserve organic matter and signs of life that could tell us whether life was ever present in Jezero crater billions of years ago. The sediments here appear to have undergone physical and chemical changes after deposition—called diagenesis—when interacting with liquid water. These changes, which may have occurred in a lake or a shallow river plain and later when the sediments were shallowly buried, are often associated with favorable conditions for preserving signs of ancient life. However, these changes may also have resulted in the breakdown of these signs of life. This work reconstructs the geologic history of the Hogwallow Flats member and discusses the importance of these rocks for the search for ancient life on Mars. A total of three rock cores were collected by Perseverance from these rocks for return to Earth. These samples have very high potential to preserve organic matter and signs of ancient life. 6. Investigating Hydrated Silica in Syrtis Major, Mars: Implications for the Longevity of Water–Rock Interaction.

Abstract: We use the crystallinity of hydrated silica, represented by the 1.4 μm absorption position in orbiter spectroscopic data, as a proxy for the longevity of water–rock interaction in the Syrtis Major region. Geological maps and crater size–frequency distribution analyses are employed to contextualize mineral detections and estimate surface ages. Hydrated silica is detected within two distinct geological units: a younger "volcanic terrain" (vt) unit (∼2.4 Ga) and an older "highland terrain" (ht) unit (3.5–3.7 Ga). Hydrated silica in the vt unit typically has a band position <1.41 μm, consistent with amorphous opal‐A, suggesting these younger terrains have experienced limited interaction with water. In contrast, hydrated silica in the older highlands typically has a band position >1.41 μm, indicating opal‐CT, suggesting that these deposits have had more time to interact with water, while also producing accessory minerals such as kaolinite and Fe/Mg phyllosilicates. Plain Language Summary: This study explores the interactions between water and rocks in a region on Mars known as Syrtis Major by investigating a mineral‐like substance called hydrated silica. The structure of hydrated silica helps us estimate the extent of water interaction and its effects on the rocks. We used satellite data to locate this mineral across Syrtis Major and infer its crystal structure. Furthermore, we developed detailed geological maps and estimated surface ages to understand the geological context. We found that hydrated silica is located in two different types of areas: (a) a younger volcanic region; and (b) an older highland region. In the younger volcanic areas, it appears that less crystalline hydrated silica formed by interaction with small amounts of water, possibly during later volcanic activity. In the older highlands, more crystalline hydrated silica likely interacted with water for a longer duration or in larger amounts. This information aligns with the idea that the older highlands experienced more extensive or long‐lasting interactions with water compared to the younger volcanic regions. It provides insights into different wet periods in Mars' past, aiding our understanding of the planet's geological history and the role water played in shaping its surface. Abstract: The Perseverance rover has collected seven oriented samples of sedimentary rocks, all likely older than the oldest signs of widespread life on Earth, at the exposed base of the western fan in Jezero crater, Mars. The samples include a sulfate- and clay-bearing mudstone and sandstone, a fluvial sandstone from a stratigraphically low position at the fan front, and a carbonate-bearing sandstone deposited above the sulfate-bearing strata. All samples contain aqueously precipitated materials and most or all were aqueously deposited. Although the rover instruments have not confidently detected organic matter in the rocks from the fan front, the much more sensitive terrestrial instruments will still be able to search for remnants of prebiotic chemistries and past life, and study Mars's past habitability in the samples returned to Earth. The hydrated, sulfate-bearing mudstone has the highest potential to preserve organic matter and biosignatures, whereas the carbonate-bearing sandstones can be used to constrain when and for how long Jezero crater contained liquid water. Returned sample science analyses of sulfate, carbonate, clay, phosphate and igneous minerals as well as trace metals and volatiles that are present in the samples acquired at the fan front would provide transformative insights into past habitable environments on Mars, the evolution of its magnetic field, atmosphere and climate and the past and present cycling of atmospheric and crustal water, sulfur and carbon.

Abstract: Sedimentary fans are key targets of exploration on Mars because they record the history of surface aqueous activity and habitability. The sedimentary fan extending from the Neretva Vallis breach of Jezero crater's western rim is one of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover's main exploration targets. Perseverance spent ∼250 sols exploring and collecting seven rock cores from the lower ∼25 m of sedimentary rock exposed within the fan's eastern scarp, a sequence informally named the “Shenandoah” formation. This study describes the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Shenandoah formation at two areas, “Cape Nukshak” and “Hawksbill Gap,” including a characterization, interpretation, and depositional framework for the facies that comprise it. The five main facies of the Shenandoah formation include: laminated mudstone, laminated sandstone, low-angle cross stratified sandstone, thin-bedded granule sandstone, and thick-bedded granule-pebble sandstone and conglomerate. These facies are organized into three facies associations (FA): FA1, comprised of laminated and soft sediment-deformed sandstone interbedded with broad, unconfined coarser-grained granule and pebbly sandstone intervals; FA2, comprised predominantly of laterally extensive, soft-sediment deformed laminated, sulfate-bearing mudstone with lenses of low-angle cross-stratified and scoured sandstone; and FA3, comprised of dipping planar, thin-bedded sand-gravel couplets. The depositional model favored for the Shenandoah formation involves the transition from a sand-dominated distal alluvial fan setting (FA1) to a stable, widespread saline lake (FA2), followed by the progradation of a river delta system (FA3) into the lake basin. This sequence records the initiation of a relatively long-lived, habitable lacustrine and deltaic environment within Jezero crater.

Abstract: The Curiosity rover discovered fine-grained sedimentary rocks, which are inferred to represent an ancient lake and preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus were measured directly as key biogenic elements; by inference, phosphorus is assumed to have been available. The environment probably had a minimum duration of hundreds to tens of thousands of years. These results highlight the biological viability of fluvial-lacustrine environments in the post-Noachian history of Mars.

Abstract: The Greenheugh pediment at the base of Aeolis Mons (Mt. Sharp), which may truncate units in the Murray formation and is capped by a thin sandstone unit, appears to represent a major shift in climate history within Gale crater. The pediment appears to be an erosional remnant of potentially a much more extensive feature. Curiosity’s traverse through the southern extent of Glen Torridon (south of Vera Rubin ridge) has brought the rover in contact with several new stratigraphic units that lie beneath the pediment. These strata were visited at two outcrop-forming buttes (Central and Western butte- both remnants of the retreating pediment) south of an orbitally defined boundary marking the transition from the Fractured Clay-bearing Unit (fCU) and the fractured Intermediate Unit (fIU). Here we present preliminary interpretations of the stratigraphy within Central and Western buttes and propose the Western butte cap rocks do not match the pediment capping unit.

Abstract: In situ geologic context mapping (GXM) based on rover and helicopter observations provides documentation of a nearly continuous record of geology and exposed surface structure over a 120 m-wide corridor along the traverse of the Mars 2020 /Perseverance rover. The results record the geologic context of Mars 2020 campaign sites and sample sites including the local extent of bedrock outcrops, stratigraphy, attitude, and structure from imaging and rover-based remote sensing, and outcrop lithology based on in situ proximity science. Mapping identifies a sequence of igneous lithologies including: (1) early mafic, possibly intrusive, rocks; (2) pervasively fractured and deeply altered massive bedrock of undetermined protolith; (3) buried and exhumed lava flows with pahoehoe and aa textures; (4) several varieties of regolith; and (5) small impact craters.

Abstract: The first samples collected by the Mars 2020 mission represent units exposed on the Jezero Crater floor, from the potentially oldest Séítah formation outcrops to the potentially youngest rocks of the heavily cratered Máaz formation. Surface investigations reveal landscape-to-microscopic textural, mineralogical, and geochemical evidence for igneous lithologies, some possibly emplaced as lava flows. The samples contain major rock-forming minerals such as pyroxene, olivine, and feldspar, accessory minerals including oxides and phosphates, and evidence for various degrees of aqueous activity in the form of water-soluble salt, carbonate, sulfate, iron oxide, and iron silicate minerals. Following sample return, the compositions and ages of these variably altered igneous rocks are expected to reveal the geophysical and geochemical nature of the planet’s interior at the time of emplacement, characterize martian magmatism, and place timing constraints on geologic processes, both in Jezero Crater and more widely on Mars. Petrographic observations and geochemical analyses, coupled with geochronology of secondary minerals, can also reveal the timing of aqueous activity as well as constrain the chemical and physical conditions of the environments in which these minerals precipitated, and the nature and composition of organic compounds preserved in association with these phases. Returned samples from these units will help constrain the crater chronology of Mars and the global evolution of the planet’s interior, for understanding the processes that formed Jezero Crater floor units, and for constraining the style and duration of aqueous activity in Jezero Crater, past habitability, and cycling of organic elements in Jezero Crater.

Abstract: During the first year of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, Perseverance rover has investigated the dark crater floor unit of Jezero crater and four samples of this unit have been collected. The focus of this paper is to assess the potential of these samples to calibrate the crater-based Martian chronology. We first review the previous estimation of crater-based model age of this unit. Then, we investigate the impact crater density distribution across the floor unit. It reveals that the crater density is heterogeneous from areas which have been exposed to the bombardment during the last 3 Ga to areas very recently exposed to bombardment. It suggests a complex history of exposure to impact cratering. We also display evidence of several remnants of deposits on the top of the dark floor unit across Jezero below which the dark floor unit may have been buried. We propose the following scenario of burying/exhumation: the dark floor unit would have been initially buried below a unit that was a few tens of meters thick. This unit then gradually eroded away due to Aeolian processes from the northeast to the west, resulting in uneven exposure to impact bombardment over 3 Ga. A cratering model reproducing this scenario confirms the feasibility of this hypothesis. 23. Evolution of a Lake Margin Recorded in the Sutton Island Member of the Murray Formation, Gale Crater, Mars.

Abstract: This study uses data from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover to document the facies of the Sutton Island member of the Murray formation, interpret paleoenvironments, and establish key stratigraphic transitions at Gale crater. Two facies associations were identified: Facies Association 1 (FA1) and Facies Association 2 (FA2). Individual facies in FA1 include planar‐laminated mudstone with minor intervals of planar sandstone, ripple cross‐laminated sandstone, cross‐stratified sandstone, and alternating laminated sandstone and mudstone. Meter‐thick packages of planar‐laminated mudstone in FA1 are interpreted to represent deposition in low‐energy ponded environments along the lake margin. Straight‐ and curve‐crested ripple cross‐laminated facies are interpreted to represent current‐influenced deposition. Cross‐stratified sandstone facies consist of dm‐thick sets that represent deposition in distal channels. Intercalated mm‐scale mudstone and sandstone laminae represent waning flow conditions and possible channel abandonment. Facies in FA1 collectively represent deposition in a distal delta plain. FA2 is comprised of planar‐laminated mudstone with minor sandstone and is interpreted to represent deposition in a lacustrine‐basin setting by suspension settling linked to density flows. FA1 transitions upward into FA2, defining a rapid transgression substantial enough to facilitate the deposition of distal lake facies above delta plain facies. The abrupt transition from FA2 back to FA1 deltaic deposits is suggestive of forced regression. Facies in FA1 and FA2 are consistent with the prevalence of aqueous environments recorded in other Murray formation members and extend our understanding of the dynamic sedimentary processes that characterized ancient lacustrine systems at Gale crater. Plain Language Summary: This study classifies sedimentary rock characteristics within an interval of sedimentary rock layers comprising the Sutton Island member, which is part of the Murray formation. The main goals of this study are to determine the ancient environments represented by the different sedimentary rock groups (facies) and to understand how ancient environments changed through time. Facies are grouped into two categories (associations) based on their distribution within the stratigraphy: Facies Association 1 (FA1) and Facies Association 2 (FA2). FA1 contains rocks with a range of sedimentary structures and grain sizes and formed via aqueous processes. The environment represented by FA1 is a delta plain adjacent to a lake. Facies Association 2 consists of one fine‐grained facies that represents deposition in a lake basin environment. The lowermost interval of stratigraphy is comprised of FA1 (delta plain), which transitions upward into the middle interval of stratigraphy comprised FA2 (lake) and subsequently returns to FA1 in the uppermost stratigraphic interval. Transitions between facies associations represent shifts in the ancient lake shoreline that may have been caused by lake‐level change. The delta plain and lake environments represented by FA1 and FA2 are consistent with facies in other members of the Murray formation. Abstract: International audience; The Perseverance rover landed on the floor of Jezero crater on 18 February 2021. The landing site, named “Octavia E. Butler” is located ~2.2 km from the SE-facing erosional scarp of the western fan deposits, which are of strong interest for the mission [1-2]. Images obtained using the Mastcam-Z camera and the Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) of the SuperCam instrument provided the first Mars ground-based observations of this western fan (Fig. 1). At the distance images were taken, the RMI images offer a pixel resolution of 2.2 cm, thus enabling identification of objects of typically 7-8 cm (3-4 pixels). Observations of the residual butte Kodiak confirmed the presence of a lake within Jezero crater, but also showed that the lake deduced from the deltaic architecture at Kodiak had a level ~100 m lower than expected (-2495/-2500 m), and was thus a closed system for a significant period [3]. In addition, the coarser deposits (boulder conglomerates and pebbly sandstones) observed near the top of all of the scarps are typical of fluvial floods with high energy, reflecting a change in hydrology of the fluvial system. Here, we focus on the hydrological characteristics of fluvial deposits observed within the scarps of the delta, both as topsets and as boulder conglomerates.

Abstract: The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, Mars, to investigate ancient lake and river deposits. We report observations of the crater floor, below the crater's sedimentary delta, finding that the floor consists of igneous rocks altered by water. The lowest exposed unit, informally named Seitah, is a coarsely crystalline olivine-rich rock, which accumulated at the base of a magma body. Magnesium-iron carbonates along grain boundaries indicate reactions with carbon dioxide-rich water under water-poor conditions. Overlying Seitah is a unit informally named Maaz, which we interpret as lava flows or the chemical complement to Seitah in a layered igneous body. Voids in these rocks contain sulfates and perchlorates, likely introduced by later near-surface brine evaporation. Core samples of these rocks have been stored aboard Perseverance for potential return to Earth.

Abstract: The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, Mars, to investigate ancient lake and river deposits. We report observations of the crater floor, below the crater’s sedimentary delta, finding the floor consists of igneous rocks altered by water. The lowest exposed unit, informally named Séítah, is a coarsely crystalline olivine-rich rock, which accumulated at the base of a magma body. Fe-Mg carbonates along grain boundaries indicate reactions with CO2-rich water, under water-poor conditions. Overlying Séítah is a unit informally named Máaz, which we interpret as lava flows or the chemical complement to Séítah in a layered igneous body. Voids in these rocks contain sulfates and perchlorates, likely introduced by later near-surface brine evaporation. Core samples of these rocks were stored aboard Perseverance for potential return to Earth.

Abstract: Onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover, the ChemCam instrument consists of : (1) a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS) for elemental analysis of targets and (2) a Remote Micro Imager (RMI), which provides imaging context for the LIBS. The LIBS/ChemCam performs analysis typically of spot sizes 350-550 micrometers in diameter, up to 7 meters from the rover. Within Gale crater, Curiosity traveled from Bradbury Landing toward the base of Mount Sharp, reaching Pahrump Hills outcrop circa sol 750. This region, as seen from orbit, represents the first exposures of lower Mount Sharp. In this abstract we focus on two types of features present within the Pahrump Hills outcrop: concretion features and light-toned veins.

46. A Lacustrine Paleoenvironment Recorded at Vera RubinRidge, Gale Crater: Overview of the Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Observed by the Mars ScienceLaboratory Curiosity Rover

Abstract: For ~500 Martian solar days (sols), the Mars Science Laboratory team explored Vera Rubin ridge (VRR), a topographic feature on the northwest slope of Aeolis Mons. Here we review the sedimentary facies and stratigraphy observed during sols 1,800–2,300, covering more than 100 m of stratigraphic thickness. Curiosity's traverse includes two transects across the ridge, which enables investigation of lateral variability over a distance of ~300 m. Three informally named stratigraphic members of the Murray formation are described: Blunts Point, Pettegrove Point, and Jura, with the latter two exposed on VRR. The Blunts Point member, exposed just below the ridge, is characterized by a recessive, fine‐grained facies that exhibits extensive planar lamination and is crosscut by abundant curvi‐planar veins. The Pettegrove Point member is more resistant, fine‐grained, thinly planar laminated, and contains a higher abundance of diagenetic concretions. Conformable above the Pettegrove Point member is the Jura member, which is also fine‐grained and parallel stratified, but is marked by a distinct step in topography, which coincides with localized meter‐scale inclined strata, a thinly and thickly laminated facies, and occasional crystal molds. All members record low‐energy lacustrine deposition, consistent with prior observations of the Murray formation. Uncommon outcrops of low‐angle stratification suggest possible subaqueous currents, and steeply inclined beds may be the result of slumping. Collectively, the rocks exposed at VRR provide additional evidence for a long‐lived lacustrine environment (in excess of 106 years via comparison to terrestrial records of sedimentation), which extends our understanding of the duration of habitable conditions in Gale crater.

Abstract: Observations from orbital spacecraft have shown that Jezero crater, Mars, contains a prominent fan-shaped body of sedimentary rock deposited at its western margin. The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater in February 2021. We analyze images taken by the rover in the three months after landing. The fan has outcrop faces that were invisible from orbit, which record the hydrological evolution of Jezero crater. We interpret the presence of inclined strata in these outcrops as evidence of deltas that advanced into a lake. In contrast, the uppermost fan strata are composed of boulder conglomerates, which imply deposition by episodic high-energy floods. This sedimentary succession indicates a transition, from a sustained hydrologic activity in a persistent lake environment, to highly energetic short-duration fluvial flows.

Abstract: A central objective of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is to collect and document a suite of scientifically compelling samples for possible return to Earth by a subsequent mission [1]. Strategic planning by the Mars 2020 Science Team has thus far identified a set of notional sample caches. These arose from integrating the testable hypotheses that could be addressed by Mars 2020 within the framework of the geology of Jezero crater and its surroundings [2], identifying specific locations of high scientific interest by analysis of remotely sensed data, and traversability considerations [1]. Here we describe the general characteristics of the identified notional caches and compare them to the types of samples previously prioritized by the wider Mars science community [3]. While strategic planning will guide and streamline the decision-making processes once the rover lands at Jezero crater, the actual samples collected will depend on the landing location, the traverse taken, and decisions made by the Mars 2020 Science Team.
