Abstract

MycoBank, a registration system for fungi established in 2004 to capture all taxonomic novelties, acts as a coordination hub between repositories such as Index Fungorum and Fungal Names. Since January 2013, registration of fungal names is a mandatory requirement for valid publication under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (ICN). This review explains the database innovations that have been implemented over the past few years, and discusses new features such as advanced queries, registration of typification events (MBT numbers for lecto, epi- and neotypes), the multi-lingual database interface, the nomenclature discussion forum, annotation system, and web services with links to third parties. MycoBank has also introduced novel identification services, linking DNA sequence data to numerous related databases to enable intelligent search queries. Although MycoBank fills an important void for taxon registration, challenges for the future remain to improve links between taxonomic names and DNA data, and to also introduce a formal system for naming fungi known from DNA sequence data only. To further improve the quality of MycoBank data, remote access will now allow registered mycologists to act as MycoBank curators, using Citrix software.

Abstract

EMbaRC is an EU project funded under the Seventh Framework Programme, Research lnfrastructures action. lt aims to improve, coordinate and validate microbial Biological Resource Centres (BRC) delivery to European and lnternational researchers from both public and private sectors. Apart from the networking and research activities, EMbaRC offers EU-supported grants for Trans-national Access opportunities. Scientists who carry out research in Europe or Associated Countries can use EMbaRC infrastructures to support part of their research project. ln this presentation, the main achievements of the first year will be summarized. Networking activities allow i) an estimation of overlapping/uniqueness between the consortium holdings, ii) a deep analysis of strain deposit after publication, iii) a review of the training offered by the consortium in the collection management and associated tools (identification, data management, etc.), iv) an harmonisation of the quality manual, v) a first draft for a biosecurity code, and vi) establish the basis of a common strategy to increase the sustainability of BRCs. Joint Research activities focused in particular on storage of recalcitrant strains, DNA storage and species identification by new methods like mass spectrometry ... ln parallel, success stories are being gathered to support the idea that microbial collections contribute to the bioeconomy. Such achievements can be a way to increase the sustainability of collections, and some of them will be presented.

Abstract

Lyophilization, the removal of water by freezing and then volatilization at low pressure and temperature, has been employed as a standard long-term preservation method for many filamentous fungi. The method outlined involves the use of standard shelf freeze-drying and skimmed milk as a suspending solution/lyoprotectant. This approach has been employed to freeze-dry the majority of the 50,000 fungal strains that have been successfully lyophilized at the Centraal bureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS) culture collection (http://www.cbs.knaw.nl/). Abstract

Hericium bharengense is described as new to science from subtropical to temperate forests in the West district of Sikkim. The intricate hymenophoral branching pattern, presence of moderately long spines, size and ornamentation pattern of basidiospores separate it from the allied species H. abietis, H. coralloides and H. erinaceus. Its phylogenetic position within the genus Hericium is supported by rDNA sequences in the ITS gene region. Abstract

The article offers information on the virtual fungal laboratory MycoBank. The CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre launched the MycoBank towards the end of 2004. It was considered as a freely available electronic depository system for taxonomic novelties in fungi since 2007. Depository for nomenclatural novelties at the laboratory requires the names of new taxa or combinations, along with nomeclatural and taxonomical information. Deposited names in the laboratory are restricted until they are actually been published. The advantages of MycoBank over printed sources are highlighted.

Abstract

With the change to one scientific name for fungal taxa, generic names typified by species with sexual or asexual morph types are being evaluated to determine which names represent the same genus and thus compete for use. In this paper generic names of the Agaricomycotina(Basidiomycota) were evaluated to determine synonymy based on their type. Forty-seven sets of sexually and asexually typified names were determined to be congeneric and recommendations are made for which generic name to use. In most cases the principle of priority is followed. However, 16 generic names are recommended for use that do not have priority and thus need to be protected: Aleurocystisover Matula; Armillariaover Acurtisand Rhizomorpha; Asterophoraover Ugola; Botryobasidiumover Acladium, Allescheriella, Alysidium, Haplotrichum, Physospora,and Sporocephalium; Coprinellusover Ozonium; Coprinopsisover Rhacophyllus; Dendrocollybiaover Sclerostilbumand Tilachlidiopsis; Diacanthodesover Bornetina; Echinoporiaover Echinodia; Neolentinusover Digitellus; Postiaover Ptychogaster; Riopaover Sporotrichum; Scytinostromaover Artocreas, Michenera, and Stereofomes; Tulasnellaover Hormomyces; Typhulaover Sclerotium;and Wolfiporiaover Gemmulariaand Pachyma.Nine species names are proposed for protection: Botryobasidium aureum, B. conspersum, B. croceum, B. simile, Pellicularia lembosporum(syn. Abstract

The status and identities of Polyporus unitus, type of Perenniporia Murrill, of Boletus medulla-panis, their supposed synonymy, and the nomenclatural status of Perenniporia, Poria, and Physisporus are discussed. It is demonstrated, based on the study of its type, that Pol. unitus is not a synonym of B. medulla-panis even in the historically wider context than that recognised here. Although not precisely identifiable, the type of Pol. unitus does not belong to Perenniporia in its current sense, which is based on B. medulla-panis. Poria Pers. and Physisporus Chevall. are discussed as possible generic names for B. medulla-panis and related taxa. However, in view of the need for nomenclatural stability, it is proposed to maintain Perenniporia as currently accepted, with B. medulla-panis as conserved type. This name is epitypified and Perenniporia medulla-panis redefined. Based on a study of European specimens, two species are recognized within the historical circumscription of P. medulla-panis, Perenniporia meridionalis being described as new. Both species are compared with other European taxa with resupinate basidiomes and a key to all these taxa is presented.

49. Experimental taxonomic studies in <e1>Psilocybe</e1> sect. <e1>Psilocybe</e1>

Abstract

The species of Psilocybe sect. Psilocybe, formerly classified in the genus Deconica, were investigated using morphology, mating behaviour and RAPD analysis. Psilocybe inquilinus and P. crobula do not seem to be closely related. Based on the morphology, two varieties could be accommodated in P. subviscida, namely as vars. subviscida and velata. The mating group of P. montana is characterized by rather thick-walled, dark spores with a fairly large germ-pore. Putative representatives of P. muscorum and P. physaloides freely interbreed with typical P. montana, and, consequently, these taxa are considered to represent one variable species. The ex-type strain of P. chionophila did not mate with isolates of P. montana. One collection of P. chionophila from a lowland habitat, morphologically resembling P. montana, was found to be interfertile with the ex-type strain of P. chionophila, but not with P. montana. We identified several collections as P. magica, which is morphologically similar to P. schoeneti. Mating studies showed that these specimen belong to the same biological species, but failed to mate with the ex-type of P. schoeneti.

50. The taxonomic position of <e1>Asterodon</e1>, <e1>Asterostroma</e1> and <e1>Coltricia</e1> inferred from the septal pore cap ultrastructure

Abstract

The ultrastructure of the septal pore cap (SPC) of Asterodon, Asterostroma and Coltricia were examined to establish the taxonomic position of these genera. Asterostroma has dolipores with perforate SPCs and is classified in the Lachnocladiaceae. In contrast, Asterodon and Coltricia have dolipores with imperforate SPCs and belong to the Hymenochaetaceae. Other selected species of genera belonging to the Hymenochaetaceae like Hydnochaete, Coltriciella, Inonotus, Onnia, and Cyclomyces also contained imperforate SPCs. Coltriciella, Inonotus and Cyclomyces moreover presented a lamella of endoplasmic reticulum above the imperforate SPC after chemical fixation. Such a lamella could rarely be observed in Coltricia only after high-pressure freezing and freeze substitution. Cryofixed fungal cells of Cyclomyces and Coltricia showed differences in the architecture of the matrix of the SPC. Coltricia showed a more layered matrix structure than the SPC of Cyclomyces. In addition, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy revealed an indent in the centre of the imperforate SPC of Cyclomyces, indicating a reduced thickness, and resulting into a tented profile in cross-sections.
