1. Virtual Exchange: Romania and Hungary 100 Years Later

Abstract

The aim of this Virtual Exchange (VE) project was to bring together students from the Andrássy Gyula German speaking university (AUB) in Budapest, Hungary, and Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu (LBUS), Romania, in order for them to get to know their neighbors and reflect on the way the end of WWI is remembered 100 years later. In this case study, we discuss the way we conceived the three iterations of the VE (2018-2020), the challenges we faced on different levels, as well as the value of this teaching method for the academic field of history. Abstract

Abstract: Among the “vicious” or “secondary” personal mobility effects, the brain drain has become the most disturbing trend for the least developed countries barely out of communism. Its consequences on social and economic development have not yet been measured. We suggest a reflection on solutions (only few at present) that our university finds in order to adapt to the international transfer of human capital. Starting from the responses to questions about the aspirations and migration projects of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, aspiring entrepreneurs, we have been able to observe a radical change in attitude towards the historical migration. Although the migration phenomenon is considered as being natural in any tumultuous period of history, the current migration differs from the twentieth century one, because it is caused by the growing rate of unemployment and the inability of the people to create new jobs. Young people are sort of exiled because some do not want to leave the country as their precedecessors from the communist regime, but they are pragmatic and want higher salaries. In the case in which they leave the country, they do it having in mind the thought of returning at the moment they find an opportunity in Romania. The Romanian educational system displeases the young by its nature, too theoretical and less practical, by the scarcity of offers of internships in companies. The paradox is that few of the students go study for bachelor and master degrees abroad, although they acknowledge the superiority of the Western education system. The survey shows that while studying abroad, the majority of students get a job, also because the scholarship does not cover their living expenses. Students go abroad for a high quality of life, professional opportunities and for recognition of the individual value. They are attracted by lower corruption, possibilities of professional development and appreciation of their work by the employer. Those of them who decide to come back are justified by numerous opportunities to launch a new business, opportunity to exploit its expertise in order to change the Romanian society. Emotional connection with friends and family and not least patriotism are mentioned by almost all respondents, which is a surprise to a generation considered to be cosmopolitan. Knowledge of foreign languages and intercultural accommodation with the Western civilization through university studies, smooth the progress of migration, but they are not its cause.

Abstract

The Roman Ancient culture makes no exception from the long line of humanity's empires, which have not paid attention to femininity in its beauty and goodness, instruction and education. The Roman woman represented, both during the Empire and in the Republic, a controversial subject and treated most often differently. While common women only received elementary skills (writing and reading), upper and middle-class women had the right to a selected education, granted by the family's position. Ever since birth, the status of a woman was to ensure the unity of the family by perpetuating the name and assuring a social and financial position to her descendants, a status at least equal to that of her family. The role of matrons in Roman Ancient society is quite clearly established by laws and norms, i.e. daughter, wife and mother, with high behavioural. Everything the woman does inside the household configures her on the outside of her household, becoming the image of her husband and family. The Roman Ancient women are the first to earn social rights (throughout the male intermediary, i.e. Tutela mulierum perpetua) and enjoy a relative "freedom" in the pre-Christian world. Although the Roman Ancient woman is dependent on her husband and father, she enjoys consideration and freedom as only contemporary society offers today's women an equal status, at least formally, relative to the man. Abstract

The woman in ancient Rome did not have a direct political role, but often from behind the curtain, her influence was overwhelming, whether it was family or public life. The significant involvement of Roman women in politics was eased by the crisis following the civil wars that led to a disintegration of the family and the moral principles hard-pressed by the new rules, exiles, and property confiscations as follow-ups of the triumvirate. All of these gathered, lead to an uncertainty of life, extremely favourable to the feminine "independence" of patricians. Political marriages are increasing, as well as divorces, love affairs, and youth immorality, which led to the emergence of a panoply of energetic, selfish and domineering female figures on the political scene of Rome. These women did not hesitate to defend their husbands or their partisans, but neither to act politically against them, reaching to betrayal and murder. From the female mythology gallery of Ancient Rome, we have very selected with difficulty several notable personalities for the historical, political and literary imaginary. The gallery of these characters and personalities is opened by Emperor Livia, the wife of Augustus, continued by the beautiful daughter of Augustus, Iulia Maior, who became the wife of Tiberius and the grandmother of Caligula, respectively Nero's great-grandmother. These two women open the list of women with a strong will, involved in brutality and wars between generals and politicians, eager to influence the leadership of a world. Fulvia is another strong name in the gallery of famous women of the ancient Republican Rome, equally impetuous, violent and arrogant in character, but protected by Caesar's disposition, incapable of resisting the persistent prayers of a woman, she dismantles the myth of the housewife matron. Often, a feminine destiny and personality are one of the most memorable and positive ones to leave as a legacy a dictator’s personality who is in direct contradiction with the positive, innocent and dignified character of the mother (Agrippina Maior and Cornelia Africana). The immorality of these women lies in particular in social structures and politics. They are female grey eminence, authors of intrigues and capable of murder, they represent avant la lettre power-struggling fighters and masters of a male-dominated world through their political ambition. Abstract

The Sibyls and the art of prophecies have played an essential role in history, proving the inclination of the human spirit towards mysticism and the belief of all societies that at the base of any symbolic story is a real event. In the book of Enoch, which describes the making of the world according to the Jewish tradition, often cited by the authors of the New Testament and even by Jesus Christ, it speaks of angels who loved women and married them, making them known the derisory mysteries they knew, the small mysteries of the universe that led to evil. Sibyls belong to the category of women who gave birth to mythological characters of humans with human appearance, but with an appearance obtained through imagination and not through the physical eye. They are humanoid creatures with two wings or four wings and two heads, with legs and horns on the head, with horse legs in the back and human ones in front, bulls with human head, dog with jackal head, dog with four heads or dog with tail fish, monsters of all kinds that populate the mythological imaginary of mankind, as intermediate phases to a perfect human race. The ancients had a vision of history written in the stars and recovered by them by magic signs, and the modern world continues this way of relating itself to the universe, but with technological methods and a scientific imaginary based on the latest explorations in physics and technology. Along time, cultures and societies have referred differently to these symbols of occult history, sacred symbols, granting them superior recognition (e.g. the Senate, Alexander Macedon, Heraclitus, etc.) or disregarding them, as old, deceitful and caring of harmful stories. From the pre-Christian society to the society dominated by Christianity, which was also the most aggressive one with these feminine practices, considered as witchcraft and punished with death, and to this day, in the neo-liberal society, the status of special women, prophetesses and intellectuals, visionaries, remains as controversial as ever. Transhumanism, as a social movement, seeks an increase of the human being in all its attributes, reminding us of the experience of the "Observers" of Enoch. Women are the ones who support society and life, with much courage and constantly, as it happens in literature, taken from real-life events. Sibyls, masters of time and sacred prophecies, continue their journey in the modern, post-Christian society, and reach the most appreciated social position of all times, that of women socially equal with men, appreciated and recognised in the post-religious world. Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the ways in which a marriage can be concluded in the case of rich and noble families, as well as in the case of the poor ones. Marriage habits are different, depending on the social and economic status, and most of these traditions prevail nowadays also. The institution of marriage will lead to a transformation of the sentimental imaginary, starting from the Middle Ages' fin amor, played by the troubadours, to the pragmatic, interested relationship, focused on procreation and the transfer of possession. At the mental level, we are observing the magic of the inside reflexion, inwardly, towards that inner feeling analysed by both literary and artistic specialists. The social status of the family cannot be provided by an individual. Affiliation to a family ensures social inclusion and human survival. The role of the family in society is a sum of the roles of each member, the man may have the archetypes of prince or warrior, artist or humanist, merchant or clergyman, scholar or adventurer; the woman, first of all mother or daughter, widow, virgin or prostitute, nun or witch; the child seen as a follower of the family's reputation, entrepreneur and supporter of the mother. The feminine condition in the family is a tragic one, as the woman gets to accept the premature disappearance of her beloved children, removed from inheritance in noble families through crime or natural causes. Abstract

The present paper is intended to be an analysis of the female ideal during the Renaissance period, respectively during the 14th-17th centuries, both in the realities of the times and in the art. The Italian Renaissance was inspired by Greek-Roman mythology, i.e. Olympus was fascinated by the goddess of beauty, Venus, as well as the ideal of the Middle Ages represented by Virgin Mary and Eve. Although the Church blames the feminine beauty as a source of sin, the prosperous Renaissance society divinises the beauty of the divine creation and believes that the beauty of the woman corresponds to that soul. During this time the criteria of feminine beauty are defined and set true canons and measurements to be respected to become the ideal woman. It is also during these times that the first women's clothing treaties, with the differences of the social classes, and the cosmetic procedures treaties were written. Many women from different social classes have become models for the great Renaissance genius artists, such as Michelangelo, da Vinci, Titian, Rafael, and Botticelli. The models of perfection and elegance of Renaissance Florentine noble feminine women remain Beatrice d'Este and Isabella d'Este, in contradiction with the controversial Lucrezia Borgia. In the works of the geniuses of Florence appears the model of the real woman with voluptuous forms, the fertile woman, and the eloquent example being Madonna of Rafael. The beauty made from the inside is at the antipode, with freedom and detachment from the viewer and the world of senses, Mona Lisa, which explores uninterrupted inner wealth. With the feminine ideal imposed by the Renaissance, a different kind of love was created than the one based on physical and sensory beauty, the spiritual and mystical dimension of romantic love was discovered. Abstract

This study finds its origins in the question whether the associations from the periphery of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire played a role in the public sphere and space. The city of Sibiu, with a majority of German population at the end of the nineteenth century, changed from an architectural and economic point of view during the Belle Époque. The way in which the Association for Embellishment of the city of Sibiu (Verein zur Verschönerung der Stadt Hermannstadt) reacted and acted to the administrative changes, is important in order to gain insights regarding the social and public space. The prosopography of some members involved in the association is also relevant, because it shows the concern to take care of the public space. The gardens, parks, promenades which were arranged and planned by the members of the association, led to the building of an European public space, which was favourable to leisure activities. Abstract

In the last decades, the synthetic polymers are used in large scale in many areas. These macromolecular substances are usually of petroleum origin and are not biodegradable. The oil resources are limited and the use of non-biodegradable polymers causing serious environmental problems. In addition, non-biodegradable polymers are not suitable for temporary use. The advantages of synthetic polymers are obvious, including adequate physical and mechanical properties and low cost price. Natural polymers are abundant, renewable and biodegradable. Disadvantages of natural polymers refer to the decreasing of physical and mechanical properties. Mixtures of synthetic polymers with natural polymers that contain hydrolytic or enzymatic labile links show the advantage of improving the physical and mechanical properties and are biodegradable. The aim of this paper is to prepare biocomposites by melt blending of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with natural polymers, such that these mixtures will provide suitable properties required for use in the medical field, respecting the environment. Abstract

Our paper is on the linguistic future of the United Europe considering two important theories: that of multilingualism and on the other hand, that of a lingua franca. The two theories have several supporters but, for the moment, neither of the two theories has prevailed. This paper intends to discuss the idea that, in a democratic Europe, all the peoples should be able to communicate among each other, regardless the channel of communication. Globalization of economic changes involves the risk of language and cultural standardization. The European Union is in opposition to this idea, suggesting a multilingual model, based on the consideration of the diversity. Higher education has to play an important part in the cross-cultural preparation of the younger generation and give them the linguistic background for international communication. Abstract

The increased metabolic activity during pregnancy leads elevated levels of oxidative stress via the production of reactive oxygen species, but protective mechanisms against free radical generation are activated. The aim of this study was to examine the dynamic of oxidative stress in pregnant rats during gestation period and the influence of vitamin E -exogenous antioxidant- under these circumstances. It has been detected from rats plasma lipid peroxides, carbonyl protein clusters, ceruloplasmin and total antioxidant capacity, before giving birth and these were compared to the values in unpregnant rats. During gestation time, we observed semnificative increase of lipid peroxides and carbonyl groups and an important increase of the serum ceruloplasmin on pregnant rats and decrease of total antioxidant capacity as compared to controls, which clearly shows oxidative stress. Antioxidant effect of vitamin E was highlighted through a decrease in oxidative stress markers and a reinforcement of antioxidant capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
