Abstract

Single neutron- and proton-removal cross sections have been systematically measured for 72 medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei around Z=50 and energies around 900A MeV using the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. Neutron-removal cross sections are described by considering the knock-out process together with initial- and final-state interactions. Proton-removal cross sections are, however, significantly smaller than predicted by the same calculations. The observed difference can be explained as due to the knockout of short-correlated protons in neutron-proton dominating pairs.

Abstract

Intermediate energy single-neutron removal from $^{31}$Mg has been employed to investigate the transition into the N=20 island of inversion. Levels up to 5~MeV excitation energy in $^{30}$Mg were populated and spin-parity assignments were inferred from the corresponding longitudinal momentum distributions and $\gamma$-ray decay scheme. Comparison with eikonal-model calculations also permitted spectroscopic factors to be deduced. Surprisingly, the 0$^{+}_{2}$ level in $^{30}$Mg was found to have a strength much weaker than expected in the conventional picture of a predominantly $2p - 2h$ intruder configuration having a large overlap with the deformed $^{31}$Mg ground state. In addition, negative parity levels were identified for the first time in $^{30}$Mg, one of which is located at low excitation energy. The results are discussed in the light of shell-model calculations employing two newly developed approaches with markedly different descriptions of the structure of $^{30}$Mg. It is concluded that the cross-shell effects in the region of the island of inversion at Z=12 are considerably more complex than previously thought and that $np - nh$ configurations play a major role in the structure of $^{30}$Mg., Comment: Physics Letters B, Volume 779, 10 April 2018, Pages 124-129

Abstract

The N=20 island of inversion is an excellent playground for testing shell model calculations. The Mg chain is a region of shell evolution still far from being well understood. In this paper we present preliminary results of a single-neutron knockout experiment from ³¹Mg performed at GANIL to study the structure of ³¹Mg and of the core ³⁰Mg. The level scheme and longitudinal momentum distributions were mesured and spectroscopic factors were deduced. Negative parity states arise at low energy and the spectroscopic factor for the isomeric 0²₊ in ³⁰Mg was determined to be smaller than foreseen in the standard picture. The preliminary experimental results are compared to state-of the art shell model calculations revealing opposed interpretations.

Abstract

The fragmentation of neutron-rich 132Sn nuclei produced in the fission of 238U projectiles at 950 MeV/u has been investigated at the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This work represents the first investigation of fragmentation of medium-mass radioactive projectiles with a large neutron excess. The measured production cross sections of the residual nuclei are relevant for the possible use of a two-stage reaction scheme (fission+fragmentation) for the production of extremely neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei in future rare-ion-beam facilities. CERN-Proceedings-2010-001 available at http://www.fluka.org/Varenna2009/procmat.htm; International audience; The nuclear structure of the 31Mg nucleus has been studied with the singleneutron knockout reaction. We report on the preliminary results of an experiment performed with the EXOGAM array coupled, for the first time, to the SPEG spectrometer at GANIL.We present a provisional result for the inclusive single-neutron knockout cross section of σinc= 90(5) mb. Preliminary exclusive cross sections for the measured bound states, including the ground state, are also presented. Finally, preliminary longitudinal momentum distributions for the ground state and first excited state are also shown. These results are compared to Monte Carlo Shell-Model calculations in the sd-pf region.

Experiments with radioactive nuclear beams have enabled us to investigate nuclear properties far from stability. Glauber model analysis of total interaction cross sections measurements provides a useful method to determine effective matter radii. Abstract

The energies of the excited states in very neutron-rich Si-42 and P-41,P-43 have been measured using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy from the fragmentation of secondary beams of S-42,S-44 at 39A MeV. The low 2(+) energy of Si-42, 770(19) keV, together with the level schemes of P-41,P-43, provides evidence for the disappearance of the Z=14 and N=28 spherical shell closures, which is ascribed mainly to the action of proton-neutron tensor forces. New shell model calculations indicate that Si-42 is best described as a well-deformed oblate rotor.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the GANIL LISE3 facility, radioactive S-27 isotopes have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 95 AMeV Ar-36 primary beam. After selection by means of the LISE3 separator, the isotope of interest was implanted in a silicon-detector telescope where its half-life (T-1/2 = 15.5(15) ms) and its main decay branches were measured.

Abstract

Intermediate energy single-neutron removal from 31 Mg has been employed to investigate the transition into the N = 20 island of inversion. Levels up to 5 MeV excitation energy in 30 Mg were populated and spin-parity assignments were inferred from the corresponding longitudinal momentum distributions and γ -ray decay scheme. Comparison with eikonal-model calculations also permitted spectroscopic factors to be deduced. Surprisingly, the 0 2 + level in 30 Mg was found to have a strength much weaker than expected in the conventional picture of a predominantly 2 p − 2 h intruder configuration having a large overlap with the deformed 31 Mg ground state. In addition, negative parity levels were identified for the first time in 30 Mg, one of which is located at low excitation energy. The results are discussed in the light of shell-model calculations employing two newly developed approaches with markedly different descriptions of the structure of 30 Mg. It is concluded that the cross-shell effects in the region of the island of inversion at Z = 12 are considerably more complex than previously thought and that n p − n h configurations play a major role in the structure of 30 Mg.
