Abstract

High-resolution spectra corresponding to the rotational and the ν2–ν2 bands of the two most abundant isotopic species of ozone with one heavy 18O oxygen atom were recorded using SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source in the range 30–200 cm−1. Additionally, the ν2 vibrational-rotational bands were recorded between 550 and 880 cm−1 using a classical glowbar source that made it possible to extend and refine information compared to published data on the observed transitions of these bands. The analyses of recorded spectra permitted us to deduce experimental set of energy levels for the ground (000) and the first bending (010) vibrational states, which significantly exceeds literature data in terms of rotational quantum numbers. For both isotopic species, the weighted fits of all experimental line positions were carried out including previously published microwave data. As a result of this work, the improved values of rotational and centrifugal distortion parameters for the states (000) and (010) were obtained that permitted modelling the experimental line positions with a weighted standard deviation of 1.284 (2235 transitions) and 0.908 (4597 transitions), respectively, for 16O16O18O, and 1.168 (824 transitions) and 1.724 (2381 transitions) for 16O18O16O. Abstract

Reliable ozone spectral data consistent over several spectral ranges are a challenge for both experiment and theory. We present ab initio calculations for strong lines that lead to consistent results from the microwave to mid-infrared regions. The results agree well with established microwave line lists and our new measurements in the fundamental and first overtone regions of ozone at 5 and 10 μm. The calculations and their agreement to within 1% with measurements provide an important step toward consistent and accurate spectroscopic ozone data. The results imply that actual databases need to be corrected by about 3% in the corresponding mid-infrared spectral intervals. Appropriate recommendations for the consistency of strong line intensities of the ozone molecule in microwave, 10 and 5 μm ranges, in HITRAN (HIgh-resolution TRANsmittance and molecular apbsorption) and GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques) databases are suggested. Abstract

The HITRAN database is a compilation of molecular spectroscopic parameters. It was established in the early 1970s and is used by various computer codes to predict and simulate the transmission and emission of light in gaseous media (with an emphasis on terrestrial and planetary atmospheres). The HITRAN compilation is composed of five major components: the line-by-line spectroscopic parameters required for high-resolution radiative-transfer codes, experimental infrared absorption cross-sections (for molecules where it is not yet feasible for representation in a line-by-line form), collision-induced absorption data, aerosol indices of refraction, and general tables (including partition sums) that apply globally to the data. This paper describes the contents of the 2020 quadrennial edition of HITRAN. The HITRAN2020 edition takes advantage of recent experimental and theoretical data that were meticulously validated, in particular, against laboratory and atmospheric spectra. The new edition replaces the previous HITRAN edition of 2016 (including its updates during the intervening years). All five components of HITRAN have undergone major updates. In particular, the extent of the updates in the HITRAN2020 edition range from updating a few lines of specific molecules to complete replacements of the lists, and also the introduction of additional isotopologues and new (to HITRAN) molecules: SO, CH3F, GeH4, CS2, CH3I and NF3. Many new vibrational bands were added, extending the spectral coverage and completeness of the line lists. Also, the accuracy of the parameters for major atmospheric absorbers has been increased substantially, often featuring sub-percent uncertainties. Broadening parameters associated with the ambient pressure of water vapor were introduced to HITRAN for the first time and are now available for several molecules. Abstract

The first part of this review is a brief reminder of general information concerning atmospheric ozone, particularly related to its formation, destruction, observations of its decrease in the stratosphere, and its increase in the troposphere as a result of anthropogenic actions and solutions. A few words are said about the abandonment of the Airbus project Alliance, which was expected to be the substitute of the supersonic Concorde. This project is over due to the theoretical evaluation of the impact of a fleet in the stratosphere and has been replaced by the A380, which is now operating. The largest part is devoted to calculations and observations of the transitions in the infrared range and their applications for the atmosphere based both on effective models (Hamiltonian, symmetry rules, and dipole moments) and ab initio calculations. The complementarities of the two approaches are clearly demonstrated, particularly for the creation of an exhaustive line list consisting of more than 300,000 lines reaching experimental accuracies (from 0.00004 to 0.001 cm−1) for positions and a sub percent for the intensities in the 10 microns region. This contributes to definitively resolving the issue of the observed discrepancies between line intensity data in different spectral regions: between the infrared and ultraviolet ranges, on the one hand, and between 10 and 5 microns on the other hand. The following section is devoted to the application of recent work to improve the knowledge about the behavior of potential function at high energies.
