Abstract

The variability of the northern westerlies has been considered as one of the key elements for modern and past climate evolution. Their multiscale behavior and underlying control mechanisms, however, are incompletely understood, owing to the complex dynamics of Atlantic sea-level pressures. Here, we present a multi-annually resolved record of the westerly drift over the past 6,500 years from northern Italy. In combination with more than 20 other westerly-sensitive records, our results depict the non-stationary westerly-affected regions over mainland Europe on multi-decadal to multi-centennial time scales, showing that the direction of the westerlies has changed with respect to the migrations of the North Atlantic centers of action since the middle Holocene. Our findings suggest the crucial role of the migrations of the North Atlantic dipole in modulating the westerly-affected domain over Europe, possibly modulated by Atlantic Ocean variability.

Abstract

This article discusses the chaîne opératoire concept in prehistoric archaeology, traditionally employed for the study of lithic industries and ceramic production, and focuses on personal ornament manufacture. This category of non-functional objects has been analysed with the operational sequence approach in the framework of a research project aimed at the techno-functional study of prehistoric marble artefacts. Throughout an experimental approach, the study presents the actions and choices made by the artisans to produce marble beads and tries to understand the role and social-cultural meaning that these items had for the Copper Age communities in Tuscany. Finally, our study proved that the beginning of the use of the Apuan marble can be traced back to the sixth millennium BC, and it was connected with the production of personal ornaments, reaching its peak during the Copper Age.

Abstract

The Little Ice Age (LIA; ca. 1450-1850 C.E.) is the best documented cold period of the past millennium, characterized by high-frequency volcanism, low solar activity, and high variability of Arctic sea-ice cover. Past studies of LIA Atlantic circulation changes have referenced the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), but recent studies have noted that LIA climate patterns appear to possess complexity not captured by an NAO analogue. Here, we present a new precipitation-sensitive stalagmite record from northern Italy that covers the past 800 years. We show that in the early LIA (1470-1610 C.E.), increased atmospheric ridging over northern Europe split the climatological westerlies away from central and northern Europe, possibly caused by concurrent Artic sea-ice reduction. With ongoing ice melting in the northern high latitudes and decreasing solar irradiance in the coming years, the early LIA may potentially serve as an analogue for European hydroclimatic conditions in the coming decades.

Abstract

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years1,2. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period3. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe4, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.

Abstract

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.

Abstract

The excavations carried out in the rock-shelter of Arma dell’Aquila by C. Richard in 1938 and 1940 led to the discovery of a thick stratigraphy, the lowermost deposit of which yielded evidence of different periods of Upper Palaeolithic occupation. The recent re-examination of the knapped stone assemblages, and the radiocarbon dating of two Palaeolithic layers, have shown that the site was briefly occupied most probably during the beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic and the Early Epigravettian OIS-2 cold stage., Cercetările arheologice desfășurate în adăpostul sub stâncă de la Arma dell’Aquila de C. Abstract

Hódmezővásárhely–Gorzsa késő–neolit, Tisza kultúrába tartozó tell település a Tisza és a Maros folyók összefolyásának közelében, az Alföld délkeleti részén helyezkedik el. A feltárt régészeti leletanyagból több mint 1000 darab csiszolt kőeszköz és szerszámkő került elő, amelyből ez utóbbiak a csiszolt kőeszközökhöz képest háromszoros mennyiségben fordulnak elő, és amelynek felét homokkő anyagú eszközök teszik ki. Ezek túlnyomórészt a neolit rétegekből származnak, azonban néhány szerszámkövet a lelőhely későbbi, konkrétan bronzkori, vaskori és szarmata rétegeiből is vizsgáltunk. A leletek makroszkópos leírása és csoportosítása után az elkülönített típusok jellegzetes darabjain vékonycsiszolatos vizsgálatokat és térfogati kiméréseket végeztünk. Cikkünkben a vörös homokkő anyagú szerszámkövek petrográfiai vizsgálatának eredményeit mutatjuk be. A makroszkóposan és a polarizációs mikroszkópban megfigyelt általános szöveti bélyegek és a fő detritális alkotók mennyiségi eloszlása alapján a vörös homokkő anyagú eszközök négy típusát különítettük el. A lehetséges származási hely meghatározásához a Duna pleisztocén hordalékát, a Mecsek miocén, továbbá a Maros recens kavicsanyagát vizsgáltuk. Az előzetes eredmények alapján a Maros hordalékának egyik kavicstípusa tekinthető lehetséges forráskőzetnek a vörös–3-as típusú homokkő anyagú szerszámkő esetében. Emellett a Papuk-hegység felszíni homokkő előfordulását, továbbá a Balaton-felvidék és a Mecsek-hegység perm–triász rétegsorának anyagát is összevetettük a régészeti anyaggal. Az előzetes vizsgálatok alapján az előbbi két lelőhely anyaga teljes mértékben kiesik a lehetséges nyersanyagok köréből, azonban a mecseki Jakabhegyi Homokkő nem zárható ki teljesen. A nyersanyaglelőhely(ek) pontosításához a már vékonycsiszolatokban is megfigyelhető, kis mennyiségben előforduló, a lepusztulási területre érzékeny nehézásványok szolgáltathatnak információkat. A vékonycsiszolatos vizsgálat azonban ezekről csak részleges, áttekintő eredményeket szolgáltat, mivel a vékonycsiszolatok a teljes minta csupán egy kis térfogatát mutatják be. A gorzsai homokkő eszközök forráskőzeteinek pontosítására a jövőben részletes mikroásványtani vizsgálatokat tervezünk.

Abstract

Past human mountain settlement patterns and resource and high-altitude landscape exploitation are underexplored research fields in archaeology. This study presents data gathered during more than 20 years of fieldwork in the Pindus range of Western Macedonia (Greece), focusing in particular on Holocene land use. The investigated territory is located around the Vlach town of Samarina. The area is partly bounded by Mounts Vasilitsa, Gurguliu, Bogdani and Anitsa, and their interconnecting watersheds between ca. 1400 and 2000 m a.s.l. This research led to the discovery of many sites and findspots of lithic and ceramic artefacts attributed to the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Late Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, and several Historical periods. The radiocarbon results show an unexpected longue durée of Holocene human landscape use. The number of sites, their distribution, location, and subsistence strategies exhibit shifts between the Middle Palaeolithic and different periods of the Holocene, which are closely related to the exploitation of the mountain environment and its resources. Moreover, typical knapped stone artefacts have been used as a proxy for dating the glacial landforms which characterise the Samarina highland zone; we correlate them to the better-known moraine systems of Mount Tymphi in Epirus and contribute to the reconstruction of the Pleistocene glacial landscapes of the Pindus Range. Abstract

The renewed Mesolithic research in the Greek mainland and the islands has been providing new insights into the lively maritime activity within the region; however, the southwest coast of Turkey has been virtually devoid of related investigations until the commencement of the Bozburun Prehistoric Survey project in 2017. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the prehistoric sites discovered at the Bozburun Peninsula during the 2017–2019 field seasons. Preliminary results indicate that the area is rich in prehistoric activity. While Middle Paleolithic chipped stone industries were identified at the sites of Kayabaşı Cave, Çakmak, and Sobalak, flake based microlithic chipped stone industries typical of the Aegean Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene were identified at the sites of Sarnıç, Hurma, Sobalak, Zeytinlik, and Çakmak. A variety of artifacts, suggestive of the Neolithic, were also recorded at the sites of Hurma, Zeytinlik, and possibly at Sobalak and Sarnıç. In specific, the presence of carinated end-scrapers, burins and polyhedric cores at Sarnıç, as well as some geometric microliths at Hurma, demonstrates that Bozburun was frequented during the Upper Paleolithic and the Epipaleolithic. The presence of a few geometric microliths made on Melos obsidian at Hurma also demonstrates that the region was connected to the Aegean obsidian network routes at least by the beginning of the Holocene. If our relative dating is correct, this constitutes the earliest known use of Melos obsidian in the Anatolian mainland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Around the mid-19th century, several groups of archaeologists active in northern Italy discovered a few sites characterized by the presence of ‘hut-floors’ or ‘pit-dwellings’ (fondi di capanna), which they attributed to a well-defined period of their Stone Age sequence. Research in the central Po Plain of Lombardy was resumed in the 1970s, allowing one to attribute some of the older discoveries to the Early Neolithic Vhò cultural aspect. The scope of the excavations, which started on one of the Vhò di Piadena sites in 1974, was to interpret the function of the previously discovered features, establish their radiocarbon chronology, and compare the finds with those of the Fiorano culture distributed across the eastern regions of the Po Plain. The main goal of this paper is to provide an international audience with novel information about one of the still poorly known Early Neolithic cultural aspects of northern Italy, namely that of the Vhò.
