Abstract

Phytoseiid mites are key predators in agricultural crops. However, not all species regulate pest populations below economic thresholds, and therefore knowledge of which species are associated with particular crops aids pest control recommendations. Surveys of 12 crops across six geographical regions of California demonstrated that phytoseiid species varied by crop and geographical location, with subtropical crops exhibiting the lowest species diversity and grape the greatest. The western predatory mite, Galendromus occidentalis, long cited as a dominant species in California crops, was not found to be the major species in most situations. Euseius stipulatus, a species introduced in the 1970s, was found in the surveyed crops in many areas of the state and appears to be displacing E. hibisci along the south coast.

Abstract

Life history variation is a general feature of arthropod systems, but is rarely included in models of field or laboratory data. Most studies assume that local processes occur identically across individuals, ignoring any genetic or phenotypic variation in life history traits. In this study, we tested whether field populations of Pacific spider mites (Tetranychus pacificus) on grapevines (Vitis vinifera) display significant intraspecific life history variation associated with host plant cultivar. To address this question we collected individuals from sympatric vineyard populations where either Zinfandel or Chardonnay were grown. We then conducted a "common garden experiment" of mites on bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus) in the laboratory. Assay populations were sampled non-destructively with digital photography to quantify development times, survival, and reproductive rates. Two classes of models were fit to the data: standard generalized linear mixed models and a time-to-event model, common in survival analysis, that allowed for interval-censored data and hierarchical random effects. We found a significant effect of cultivar on development time in both GLMM and time-to-event analyses, a slight cultivar effect on juvenile survival, and no effect on reproductive rate. There were shorter development times and a trend towards higher juvenile survival in populations from Zinfandel vineyards compared to those from Chardonnay vineyards. Lines of the same species, originating from field populations on different host plant cultivars, expressed different development times and slightly different survival rates when reared on a common host plant in a common environment.

Abstract

We evaluated spray coverage on grape leaves and bunches by a high-volume sprayer (HVS), an air-assisted, low volume knapsack sprayer (LVS), and a motorized knapsack dust applicator modified to spray liquid formulations (common sprayer – CS). At the full development of the vine canopy 1400, 250 and 150 L ha−1 were applied via HVS, CS and LVS, respectively. Sprayer type, leaf or bunch orientation, leaf position and leaf side significantly affected spray coverage (P < 0.001). Mean spray coverage on leaves or bunches was below 21% for CS, and above 40 and 55% for LVS and HVS, respectively. Downy mildew leaf infection was below 5% throughout the season, with a significant effect of sprayer, time and an interaction between sprayer and time (P < 0.001). Grape berry moth damage did not differ between sprayers and the untreated control. The current work suggests that LVS might be a viable alternative to HVS, but further work is needed to establish whether differences in spray coverage affect biological efficacy. Abstract

At a global scale, agriculture accounts for 20% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs). The main sources of agricultural GHGEs are fuel use, land use change, soil cultivation, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, whereas animal waste and enteric fermentation are the most important GHGEs from animal husbandry. Carbon footprint (CF; CO2-equivalent kg−1 of product) determination through life cycle analysis (LCA) enables the quantification of the contribution of different methods of production to GHGEs. It allows for a comparison of CF among different products, as well as production optimization that typically results in production costs reduction. Research results highlight that the CF of agricultural products can be reduced through lowering inputs (e.g., fertilizers, fuel) for production, using varieties well adapted to the local environment, increasing carbon storage in soil, and minimizing transportation distance to the markets. Changing from intensive (high-input) to low-input agriculture reduces emissions. However, research should be conducted to explore if low-input agriculture maintains productivity at the required levels to feed an increasing global population.

Kouloussis, Tracey Chapman Abstract: Female remating is widespread among animal taxa, and shows high interspecific diversity in frequency. While there is no consensus on general explanations for why females mate multiply, it is clear that remating rate has important implications for many evolutionary processes such as sperm competition, cryptic female choice and sexual conflict. We investigated the refractory period and the effect of sex ratio on remating in wild-derived individuals of the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Tephritidae), an insect pest species of major worldwide economic importance. In addition, we determined the remating rates of wild females throughout the flying season. Experiments with medflies that were the offspring of wild flies showed that remating was frequent and was observed in 3.3-13.3% of females on each of the 4 days after the first mating. Many matings thus induce only a short refractory period. Again using the offspring of wild flies, we found that female remating increased significantly under a highly male-biased sex ratio. Microsatellite analysis of offspring from wild-collected females showed that remating is common (4-28% of offspring arrays showed multiple paternity) and occurred throughout the flying season of these insects. These results have important implications for insect pest management using the sterile insect technique. The predator-prey system Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) represents the most studied and the most known system among the Acari. Because of the agronomical importance of the two mite species, a wealth of modelling studies investigated the interactions of the two species at the individual level. However, regional or global level works on this system are lacking, which is impeding the investigation of climate change effects on biological control effectiveness. Here we compile and geo-locate worldwide occurrences for the two species considered, based on literature, collection and field survey data. The datasets presented in this document gather most of the literature records of both species for which locality data were available for geo-referencing (1,037 for T. urticae and 126 for P. persimilis). Geo-located data from collections and field surveys including host-plants are also presented for the first time (322 for T. urticae and 65 for P. persimilis). Abstract

The paper industry generates significant quantities of waste. The recycling of paper waste (PW) for peat replacement in growing media for ornamental plants cultivation was studied. Five ratios of PW–peat (0%, 10%, 30%, 50% or 100% v/v) were evaluated for marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), petunia (Petunia × hybrita L.) and matthiola (Matthiola incana L.) plants. Addition of PW increased the substrate pH and mineral content but decreased the air-filled porosity. In marigold, the use of 100% PW reduced plant height, plant diameter, fresh weight for both leaves and flowers and the total number of flowers produced compared to the control (100% peat). In matthiola, 100% PW reduced plant height, whereas the addition of PW even at 10% decreased plant diameter and fresh weight (biomass) but increased dry matter content. Petunia plants grown in 100% PW exhibited lower growth (plant height and diameter), whereas adding ≥ 50% of PW decreased plant fresh weight. The total number of flower buds and open flowers increased (more than twofold) on plants grown in 30% PW compared to the control substrate, indicating flower earliness. Plant leaf chlorophyll content (Chl a, Chl b, total Chl) decreased as the PW ratio increased. Total phenolics and antioxidant capacity as well as plant damage index and enzymes scavenging activities varied among species. Mineral content fluctuated among species with decreases of N and P in plants grown in PW mixtures while matthiola showed phytotoxicity symptoms. The present study suggests that peat can be substituted by up to 30% of PW for marigold and petunia for potting culture, but not for matthiola, as the physicochemical properties of the substrate need further improvement.
