Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence was determined in meat juice samples of 820 free-living raccoons from Germany. The animals were collected between December 2017 and April 2021. Using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the overall seroprevalence was found to be 48.5%. Statistical analysis revealed significant seroprevalence differences between seasons, sex, and weight of analysed raccoons. The prevalence in late winter/spring (57.7%) was significantly higher than in autumn (38.4%) (p p = 0.028). Increasing animal weight had a significant impact on the relative probability of a positive serostatus (odds ratio: 1.783, p T. gondii in meat producing animals, as sampling is even possible after slaughter or during meat inspection when blood is no longer available. The observed high seroprevalence indicates that T. gondii infection is widespread among the German raccoon population providing a potentially relevant source of T. gondii transmission to humans upon consumption or handling of animal products.

Southern Germany is known as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) risk area; however, the north of the country is almost free of human TBE cases. Due to its location in the transition zone between TBE risk areas and areas with only sporadic cases, Saxony is of importance in the surveillance of TBE. Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), showing high seroprevalence of TBE virus (TBEV) antibodies, are considered to be sentinels for TBE risk assessment. Thus, roe deer could be used as indicators helping to better understand the focality of the TBEV in nature and as a possible source to isolate TBEV. Therefore, the aims of this study were to examine roe deer coats for the presence of ticks to establish the tick burden and to detect the TBEV in attached ticks. One hundred thirty-four roe deer coats were provided by hunters from the Hunting Association in Saxony (August 2017-January 2019). The coats were frozen at - 80 °C and after de-freezing examined on both sides-inside and outside. Attached and nonattached ticks were collected, morphologically identified and tested using real-time RT-PCR for the presence of TBEV. In total, 1279 ticks were found on 48 coats. The predominant species was Ixodes ricinus (99.76%; n = 1276). Three remaining specimens were Ixodes spp. (0.16%, 1 female and 1 nymph) and Dermacentor reticulatus (0.08%, 1 male). The average infestation rate was 26.7 (SD = 69.5), with maximum of 439 ticks per animal. Females were the dominant life stage of ticks (n = 536; 42%), followed by nymphs (n = 397; n = 31.1%), males (n = 175; 13.7%), and larvae (n = 168; 13.2%). Only half of collected ticks were attached (n = 662; 51.8%). TBEV was detected only in one tick out of 1279 tested ticks. It was a female infesting a roe deer from Saxon Switzerland-East Ore Mountain. The results show that the method used in this study is not sufficient as a sentinel marker to predict TBEV spreading in nature. Although previous studies demonstrated the usefulness of serological testing of roe deer in order to trace TBE-endemic regions, using ticks attached to them to get virus isolates is not productive.

Trichinella spp. are foodborne parasites that can cause severe and potentially fatal disease in humans. Infections occur through consumption of meat containing the infectious stage (L1). In Germany the domestic cycle has been eradicated. In wild animals sporadic occurrence is observed in species such as wild boar, red foxes and raccoon dogs. The omnivore raccoon which is an invasive species in Europe is known as a potential host but has not been studied intensely regarding this parasite in Germany until now, thus resulting in a lack of knowledge about its role in the sylvatic cycle. Raccoons from the urban area of Leipzig were investigated for several pathogens including Trichinella spp. in a cooperative project. Muscle samples of 88 individuals were examined using the artificial digestion method (ADM). One animal was found positive, which is the first detection of this parasite in a raccoon in Germany.

The distribution of Alaria-spp.-mesocercariae within the host is relevant for the examination via Alaria spp. mesocercariae migration technique (AMT) regarding predilection sites and may indicate an interaction between parasite and host. Naturally Alaria-exposed frogs of Pelophylax species (n = 13) were examined for systemic distribution and localization-specific parasite density of Alaria spp. mesocercariae. The frogs were necropsied and their body was divided into the following localizations: inner organs, head, torso, forelimbs, and hind limbs. The localizations were analyzed individually and in toto using Alaria spp. mesocercariae migration technique. Our results showed neither statistical differences concerning the number of mesocercariae in the different localizations nor in respect of the rate of positive localizations. Therefore, an accumulation in a particular predilection site seems unlikely. Further research on a representative sample is necessary before final conclusions can be drawn.

Cryptosporidium spp. are apicomplexan parasites of public health concern. They are one of the main causes of intestinal diseases in humans and animals. Contaminated water is among the main sources of infection for humans and mammals. Raccoons are an introduced species in Germany. They are anthropogenic adapters with a natural affinity for water bodies. We collected samples from wild raccoons in the Federal States of Saxony and Thuringia, Central Germany. Through molecular genotyping, we found Cryptosporidium sp. skunk genotype in one raccoon from Saxony (1/24) and in one animal from Thuringia (1/27). Both raccoons were also infected with the zoonotic nematode Baylisascaris procyonis. This is the first report of co-infection with these two parasites in raccoons from Germany. Our study highlights the potential of these animals as carriers of zoonotic pathogens. Since raccoons can thrive in human settlements, this study provides data that can be used as a baseline for preventive programs.

Baylisascaris procyonis is a zoonotic nematode mainly harbored by the North American raccoon. It can cause severe neurological problems in paratenic hosts and humans. In Germany, raccoons are spread throughout the country. However, the presence of B. procyonis in the German raccoon population has not been thoroughly studied. For this study, 32 wild raccoons were collected in the urban area Leipzig, Saxony, Eastern Germany. Adult ascaroid nematodes were isolated from the intestines and morphologically identified as B. procyonis. Species confirmation was conducted through PCR. In total, adult B. procyonis worms were found in 24 raccoons. The results of the present study add new information about the presence of the parasite in Saxony, Germany. Similarly, the results highlight the importance of the raccoon as a reservoir of zoonotic parasites.

Fleisch von Wildtieren spielte eine wichtige, wenn nicht sogar zentrale Rolle in der evolutionaren Anthropogenese und hatte fur eine lange Zeit einen erheblichen Anteil an der Fleischversorgung des Menschen. Heutzutage zahlt erjagtes Wildbret mit einem Anteil von unter 1 % des bundesdeutschen Pro-Kopf-Fleischverbrauchs eher zu den Nischenprodukten des Fleischmarktes. Hygienisch und waidgerecht gewonnenes Wildbret ist ein hochwertiges Lebensmittel, das sowohl aus ernahrungsphysiologischer Sicht als auch aus Sicht des Tierschutzes eine interessante Alternative zu den gangigen Fleischsorten darstellt. Vor allem die „naturliche Haltung“ des Tieres tritt positiv in den Vordergrund. Aus dieser „extensiven“ Form der Nutzung ergeben sich allerdings auch einige Probleme. Prinzipiell konnte man Wild als Biofleisch par excellence bezeichnen—kann man dies jedoch ohne eine Zertifizierung uberhaupt guten Gewissens tun? Ferner handelt es sich bei dem Begriff „Wild“ eher um einen Sammelbegriff. Welche Wildarten bekommt der Verbraucher, wenn er eine Wildsalami kauft? Wenn Wild als regionales Produkt beworben wird, wie kann aufgrund seiner schwierigen Gewinnung durch die Jagd eine Ruckverfolgbarkeit sichergestellt werden?
