The information on the biodiversity of crustaceans, especially brachyuran crabs on the northern shore of the Gulf of Aden is even more limited and almost completely unknown. The coasts in the south of the Arabian Peninsula at the Gulf of Aden have not received much attention, with few studies in the field of marine biodiversity in general and brachyuran crabs in particular. There is a large gap in knowledge on the fauna of brachyuran crabs inhabiting the coastline in this region, so; this study aims to fill the gap in the data in this part of the Arabian Peninsula. In this study, 1750 brachyuran crab specimens were collected from 36 sites along the Yemeni coastal waters in the Gulf of Aden. These specimens were collected by hand, hand nets, snorkeling up to 2 m depth, SCUBA diving. Moreover, trawl nets were used up to 300 meters and small fish traps. All these specimens were transferred to ZSM for identification (by morphological characteristics and morphological characteristics of the gonopods) and putting together all information such as sex, measurements, locations, collection dates, habitats, and collectors of the specimens. This study recorded 163 brachyuran crabs’ species belonging to 17 super families, 28 families and 110 genera. Of the 163 species, 53 species represent the first record for Yemeni coastal waters at the Gulf of Aden. Moreover, 8 species were considered the first recorded in the marine waters of the Arabian Peninsula is given.

Polymer self-assembly leading to cooling-induced hydrogel formation is relatively rare for synthetic polymers and typically relies on H-bonding between repeat units. Here, we describe a non-H-bonding mechanism for a cooling-induced reversible order-order (sphere-to-worm) transition and related thermogelation of solutions of polymer self-assemblies. A multitude of complementary analytical tools allowed us to reveal that a significant fraction of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic repeat units of the underlying block copolymer is in close proximity in the gel state. This unusual interaction between hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks reduces the mobility of the hydrophilic block significantly by condensing the hydrophilic block onto the hydrophobic micelle core, thereby affecting the micelle packing parameter. This triggers the order-order transition from well-defined spherical micelles to long worm-like micelles, which ultimately results in the inverse thermogelation. Molecular dynamics modeling indicates that this unexpected condensation of the hydrophilic corona onto the hydrophobic core is due to particular interactions between amide groups in the hydrophilic repeat units and phenyl rings in the hydrophobic ones. Consequently, changes in the structure of the hydrophilic blocks affecting the strength of the interaction could be used to control macromolecular self-assembly, thus allowing for the tuning of gel characteristics such as strength, persistence, and gelation kinetics. We believe that this mechanism might be a relevant interaction pattern for other polymeric materials as well as their interaction in and with biological environments. BT44 is a novel, second generation glial cell line-derived neurotropic factor (GDNF) mimetic, with improved biological activity and a lead compound for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Like many other small molecules, it suffers from intrinsic poor aqueous solubility, posing significant hurdles at various levels for its preclinical development and clinical translation. Herein, we report a poly(2-oxazoline)s (POx) based BT44 micellar nanoformulation with ultra-high drug loading capacity of 47 wt.%. The BT44 nanoformulation was comprehensively characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryo-transmission/scanning electron microscopy (cryo-TEM/SEM). The DSC, XRD and redispersion studies collectively confirmed that the BT44 formulation can be stored as a lyophilized powder and can be redispersed upon need. The DLS suggested that the redispersed formulation is suitable for parenteral administration (Dh ≈ 70 nm). The cryo-TEM measurements showed the presence of worm-like structures both in plain polymer and BT44 formulation. The BT44 formulation retained biological activity in immortalized cells and in cultured dopamine neurons. The micellar nanoformulation of BT44 exhibited improved absorption (after subcutaneous injection) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration and no acute toxic effects in mice were observed. In conclusion, herein, we have developed an ultra-high BT44 loaded aqueous injectable nanoformulation, which can be used to pave way for its preclinical and clinical development for the management of neurodegenerative disorders.

Considering the largely chiral nature of biological systems, there is interest in chiral drug delivery systems. Here, we investigate for the first time polymer micelles based on poly(2-oxazoline) (POx) ABA-type triblock copolymers with chiral and racemic hydrophobic blocks for the formulation of chiral and achiral drugs. Specifically, poly(2-ethyl-4-ethyl-2oxazoline) (pEtEtOx) and poly(2-propyl-4-methyl-2-oxazoline) (pPrMeOx) were used as hydrophobic block B and poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (pMeOx) as hydrophilic block A. Using these triblock copolymers, nanoformulations of curcumin (CUR), paclitaxel (PTX), and chiral (R and S) and racemic ibuprofen were prepared. For CUR and PTX, the maximum drug loading was significantly dependent on the structure of the hydrophobic repeat units, but not the chirality. In contrast, the maximum drug loading with chiral/racemic ibuprofen was affected neither by the polymer structure nor by chirality, but minor effects were observed with respect to the size and size distribution of the drug-loaded micelles.

The research project MGF-Ostsee deals with the consequences of the exclusion of mobile bottom-contact fishing in the southern Baltic Sea, specifically to assess its effects on the biogeochemistry of surface sediments and across the benthic-pelagic food chain. In Summer 2021, an in-situ monitored experiment was conducted at a coastal site in the region of Warnemünde/Rostock to investigate the short-term impacts of bottom trawling. Herein, we present first results on how this anthropogenic intervention affects biogeochemical processes and associated elemental cycling, as well as the resulting changes in geochemical mineral tracers. We analyzed porewater and sediment, as well as the water column for major, minor and trace elements, and the stable isotope composition (C, S, O) of dissolved and solid carbon and sulfur species. Porewater gradients are combined with lander-based oxygen-consumption- and radiotracer-based microbial sulfate reduction rates to elucidate how the disturbances by the fishing gear affect element (C, P, Mn, Fe, S) and mineral (re)distribution.The controlled trawling experiment generated a re-suspension plume that reached up to 2 m above the sea floor, with 4 NTU in the lowermost portion. In the central trawled area, short cores were taken with a MUC prior and one to two hours after the experiment, and on the following day. In addition, sediment cores were recovered by divers from furrows and mounds of recent trawl marks. First results suggest that in the trawled area, the coupled Fe-Mn-P cycle reacts most sensitively, as expressed by altered porewater gradients and element diffusion. In the trawl marks, pore waters are affected differently whether sediments are removed, as in trawl furrows (erosion), or added/topped, as in trawl mounds (burial). In general, the tentative results point towards a Mn loss in the trawling area and in the furrows, whereas in the mounds Mn becomes enriched. The observed short-term changes in geochemical patterns from the experiment in the Warnemünde region are compared to data from a monitored region in the Fehmarn Belt. There, the observed patterns are tentatively associated to meso-scale areas with a history of low or high trawling impact.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are widely dysregulated in cancer, yet their functional roles in cellular disease hallmarks remain unclear. Here we employ pooled CRISPR deletion to perturb all 831 lncRNAs in KRAS-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and measure their contribution to proliferation, chemoresistance and migration across two cell backgrounds. Integrative analysis of this data outperforms conventional “dropout” screens in identifying cancer genes, while prioritising disease-relevant lncRNAs with pleiotropic and background-independent roles. Altogether 60 high-confidence oncogenic lncRNAs are active in NSCLC, the majority identified here for the first time, and which tend to be amplified and overexpressed in tumours. A follow-up antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) screen shortlisted two candidates, Cancer Hallmarks in Lung LncRNA (CHiLL 1&2), whose knockdown consistently suppressed cancer hallmarks in a variety of 2D and 3D tumour models. Molecular phenotyping reveals that CHiLL 1&2 control cellular-level phenotypes via distinct transcriptional networks converging on common oncogenic pathways. In summary, this work reveals a multi-dimensional functional lncRNA landscape underlying NSCLC that contains potential therapeutic vulnerabilities.

Background: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is one of the most aggressive human cancers, with a median survival of only three to six months. Standard treatment options and even targeted therapies have so far failed to improve long-term overall survival. Thus, novel treatment modalities for ATC, such as immunotherapy, are urgently needed. CD47 is a "don't eat me" signal, which prevents cancer cells from phagocytosis by binding to signal regulatory protein alpha on macrophages. So far, the role of macrophages and the CD47-signal regulatory protein alpha signaling axis in ATC is not well understood. Methods: This study analyzed 19 primary human ATCs for macrophage markers, CD47 expression, and immune checkpoints by immunohistochemistry. ATC cell lines and a fresh ATC sample were assessed by flow cytometry for CD47 expression and macrophage infiltration, respectively. CD47 was blocked in phagocytosis assays of co-cultured macrophages and ATC cell lines. Anti-CD47 antibody treatment was administered to ATC cell line xenotransplanted immunocompromised mice, as well as to tamoxifen-induced ATC double-transgenic mice. Results: Human ATC samples were heavily infiltrated by CD68- and CD163-expressing tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and expressed CD47 and calreticulin, the dominant pro-phagocytic molecule. In addition, ATC tissues expressed the immune checkpoint molecules programmed cell death 1 and programmed death ligand 1. Blocking CD47 promoted the phagocytosis of ATC cell lines by macrophages in vitro. Anti-CD47 antibody treatment of ATC xenotransplanted mice increased the frequency of TAMs, enhanced the expression of macrophage activation markers, augmented tumor cell phagocytosis, and suppressed tumor growth. In double-transgenic ATC mice, CD47 was expressed on tumor cells, and blocking CD47 increased TAM frequencies. Conclusions: Targeting CD47 or CD47 in combination with programmed cell death 1 may potentially improve the outcomes of ATC patients and may represent a valuable addition to the current standard of care.

Small-angle X-ray scattering confirmed worm-to-sphere transition upon heating on the nanoscale level while wide-angle X-ray scattering indicated a more uniform ordering of the macromolecular chains on the scale of 4-7 Å. NMR spectroscopy showed reduced mobility of various polymer segments in the hydrogel state, especially in the hydrophobic aromatic region. More importantly however, solution and solid-state NMR investigations also revealed close proximity of hydrophobic and hydrophilic repeat units in the gel state, which is less pronounced in the sol state. This interaction between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic block is responsible for the order-order transition and –ipso facto– inverse thermogelation. This unusual interaction is supported in silico by molecular dynamics modeling. Changes in the structure of the hydrophilic A blocks can be used to tune the gel strength, persistence, and gelation kinetics. Particle mixing and irrigation of the seabed by benthic fauna (bioturbation) have major impacts on ecosystem functions such as remineralization of organic matter and sediment-water exchange. As a tribute to Prof. Gaston Desrosiers by the Nereis Park association, eighteen laboratories carried out a collaborative experiment to acquire a global snapshot of particle reworking by the polychaete Hediste diversicolor at 16 sites surrounding the Northern Atlantic. Organisms and soft sediments were collected during May – July at different geographical locations and, using a common laboratory protocol, particulate fluorescent tracers (‘luminophores’) were used to quantify particle transport over a 10-day period. Particle mixing was quantified using the maximum penetration depth of tracers (MPD), particle diffusive coefficients (Db), and non-local transport coefficients (r). Non-local coefficients (reflecting centimeter scale transport steps) ranged from 0.4 to 15 yr−1, and were not correlated across sites with any measured biological (biomass, biovolume) or environmental parameters (temperature, grain size, organic matter). Maximum penetration depths (MPD) averaged ~10.7 cm (6.5–14.5 cm), and were similar to the global average bioturbation depth inferred from short-lived radiochemical tracers. MPD was also not correlated with measures of size (individual biomass), but increased with grain size and decreased with temperature. Biodiffusion (Db) correlated inversely with individual biomass (size) and directly with temperature over the environmental range (Q10 ~ 1.7; 5–21 °C). The transport data were comparable in magnitude to rates reported for localized H. diversicolor populations of similar size, and confirmed some but not all correlations between sediment reworking and biological and environmental variables found in previous studies. The results imply that measures of particle reworking activities of a species from a single location can be generally extrapolated to different populations at similar conditions.

Hydrogels are key components in several biomedical research areas such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biofabrication. Here, a novel ABA-type triblock copolymer comprising poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) as the hydrophilic A blocks and poly(2-phenethyl-2-oxazoline) as the aromatic and hydrophobic B block is introduced. Above the critical micelle concentration, the polymer self-assembles into small spherical polymer micelles with a hydrodynamic radius of approx 8-8.5 nm. Interestingly, this specific combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic aromatic moieties leads to rapid thermoresponsive inverse gelation at polymer concentrations above a critical gelation concentration (20 wt %) into a macroporous hydrogel of densely packed micelles. This hydrogel exhibited pronounced viscoelastic solid-like properties, as well as extensive shear-thinning, rapid structure recovery, and good strain resistance properties. Excellent 3D-printability of the hydrogel at lower temperature opens a wide range of different applications, for example, in the field of biofabrication. In preliminary bioprinting experiments using NIH 3T3 cells, excellent cell viabilities of more than 95% were achieved. The particularly interesting feature of this novel material is that it can be used as a printing support in hybrid bioink systems and sacrificial bioink due to rapid dissolution at physiological conditions.

Hypoxia is widely distributed in coastal benthic habitats and is driven by warming, nutrient pollution and the diurnal cycles of photosynthesis and respiration. Benthic sessile species, such as the soft shell clam Mya arenaria, are commonly exposed to oxygen fluctuations in their habitats which might negatively impact the performance and metabolism of clams. To determine the effects of different oxygen regime on metabolism and behavior of M. arenaria, we exposed the clams for 21 days to chronic (constant) hypoxia at 20% of air saturation, fluctuating (cyclic) hypoxia (~10-50% of air saturation) and normoxia (100% of air saturation). To mimic conditions occurring in coastal hypoxic zones, CO2 and pH levels varied with the oxygen. We assessed the digging performance, bioirrigation capacity and bioenergetics of the clams. Acclimation to constant or cyclic hypoxia did not affect the oxygen consumption of the clams, but the oxygen consumption rates declined at low ambient oxygen concentrations regardless of the acclimation to different oxygen regimes. Clams acclimated to constant hypoxia mainly used lipids, whereas clams acclimated to cyclic hypoxia used carbohydrates as energy fuel. Clams acclimated to constant or cyclic hypoxia dug slower compared to the clams acclimated to normoxia. Furthermore, bioirrigation capacity decreased in clams acclimated to constant hypoxia. Our results indicate that constant and cyclic hypoxia impair bioturbation and bioirrigation capacity of clams which has implications for their ecological function as ecosystem engineers in benthic soft bottom habitats.

The benthic oxygen consumption rate (OCR) has been widely used to measure the total benthic organic carbon degradation rate, while the oxygen distribution provides the general biogeochemistry state of marine sediments. In shallow coastal environments the light driven photosynthesis by benthic microalgae, resulting in large diurnal oscillations of oxygen concentration, further affects the oxygenation of the sediment. Yet, for permeable sediments, studies incorporating pore water advection driven by physical forces into oxygen consumption and distribution measurements are still limited. Here we examine the combined effect of benthic oxygen production and advective oxygen transport on oxygen dynamics and consumption rate in a microphytobenthos-dominated sediment (permeability k =2 x 10-11 to 5 x 10-11 m2) in a laboratory simulation with stirred benthic chambers at 40 rpm. Under alternating light (50 μE m−2 s-1) and flow regimes, oxygen concentration, penetration depth and consumption rates were monitored by means of micro-profiling and planar optode measurements. In all cases, we found that oxygen penetration depth increased up to a factor of 2 with pore water flow simulation. On the other hand, advective transport was found to reduce maximum oxygen concentration in the sediment by up to 30 %. The OCR were up to 2-times higher with only light (28 ± 3.5 µM/min) compared to combined light and flow simulation, however the total oxygen uptake was generally uniform in all chambers (41.83 ± 5.9 mmol/m2 d-1), suggesting the local redistribution of oxygen with flow without marked overall changes in O2 consumption. Our result emphasized the importance of advective transport controlling benthic oxygenation in photic permeable sediment.

Polymeric micelles are typically characterized as core-shell structures. The hydrophobic core is considered as a depot for hydrophobic molecules, and the corona-forming block acts as a stabilizing and solubilizing interface between the core and aqueous milieu. Tremendous efforts have been made to tune the hydrophobic block to increase the drug loading and stability of micelles, whereas the role of hydrophilic blocks is rarely investigated in this context, with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) being the gold standard of hydrophilic polymers. To better understand the role of the hydrophilic corona, a small library of structurally similar A-B-A-type amphiphiles based on poly(2-oxazoline)s and poly(2-oxazine)s is investigated by varying the hydrophilic block A utilizing poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (pMeOx; A) or poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (pEtOx; A*). In terms of hydrophilicity, both polymers closely resemble PEG. The more hydrophobic block B bears either a poly(2-oxazoline) and poly(2-oxazine) backbone with C3 (propyl) and C4 (butyl) side chains. Surprisingly, major differences in loading capacities from A-B-A > A*-B-A > A*-B-A* is observed for the formulation with two poorly water-soluble compounds, curcumin and paclitaxel, highlighting the importance of the hydrophilic corona of polymer micelles used for drug formulation. The formulations are also characterized by various nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods, dynamic light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and (micro) differential scanning calorimetry. Our findings suggest that the interaction between the hydrophilic block and the guest molecule should be considered an important, but previously largely ignored, factor for the rational design of polymeric micelles. Sediments play an important role in organic matter mineralisation and nutrient recycling, especially in shallow marine systems. Marine ecosystem models, however, often only include a coarse representation of processes beneath the sea floor. While these parameterisations may give a reasonable description of the present ecosystem state, they lack predictive capacity for possible future changes, which can only be obtained from mechanistic modelling. This paper describes an integrated benthic–pelagic ecosystem model developed for the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the western Baltic Sea. The model is a hybrid of two existing models: the pelagic part of the marine ecosystem model ERGOM and an early diagenetic model by Reed et al. (2011). The latter one was extended to include the carbon cycle, a determination of precipitation and dissolution reactions which accounts for salinity differences, an explicit description of the adsorption of clay minerals, and an alternative pyrite formation pathway. We present a one-dimensional application of the model to seven sites with different sediment types. The model was calibrated with observed pore water profiles and validated with results of sediment composition, bioturbation rates and bentho-pelagic fluxes gathered by in situ incubations of sediments (benthic chambers). The model results generally give a reasonable fit to the observations, even if some deviations are observed, e.g. an overestimation of sulfide concentrations in the sandy sediments. We therefore consider it a good first step towards a three-dimensional representation of sedimentary processes in coupled pelagic–benthic ecosystem models of the Baltic Sea.

Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) has been shown to independently predict short- and intermediate-term outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to assess the additive predictive value of BUN beyond estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in AMI patients with an 8.6-year follow-up.This retrospective, observational single-centre study included 1332 consecutive AMI patients (median age 64 years, 58.4% male). BUN, creatinine and eGFR were determined at hospital admission.During a median follow-up of 8.6 years (interquartile range [IQR] 4.0-11.6), 408 patients (30.6%) experienced the study endpoint of cardiovascular mortality. BUN (median 17.0 mg/dL [IQR 13.5-22.7]) was a significant predictor of cardiovascular mortality in univariate Cox regression (hazard ratio (HR) per 1 standard deviation increase 2.10, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.94-2.28, p .001). This association remained significant after multivariable adjustment for demographics, clinical variables and eGFR (adjusted HR 1.52 [CI 1.16-2.00, p = .003]). The association between BUN and outcome was more pronounced in patients with eGFR60 mL/min/1.73mCirculating BUN on admission is an independent predictor of long-term cardiovascular mortality in AMI patients and adds predictive power beyond eGFR. BUN reflects not only kidney function, but also acute haemodynamic and neurohumoral alterations during AMI, and may help to identify high-risk patients.

Amphiphilic block copolymers that undergo (reversible) physical gelation in aqueous media are of great interest in ditIerent areas including drug delivery, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and biofabrication. We investigated a small library of ABA-type triblock copolymers comprising poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) as the hydrophilic shell A and different aromatic poly(2-oxazoline)s and poly(2-oxazine)s cores B in an aqueous solution at different concentrations and temperatures. Interestingly, aqueous solutions of poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)-block-poly(2-phenyl-2-oxazine)-block-poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMeOx-b-PPheOzi-b-PMeOx) undergo inverse thermogelation below a critical temperature by forming a reversible nanoscale wormlike network. The viscoelastic properties of the resulting gel can be conveniently tailored by the concentration and the polymer composition. Storage moduli of up to 110 kPa could be obtained while the material retains shear-thinning and rapid self-healing properties. We demonstrate three-dimensional (3D) printing of excellently defined and shape-persistent 24-layered scaffolds at different aqueous concentrations to highlight its application potential, e.g., in the research area of biofabrication. A macroporous microstructure, which is stable throughout the printing process, could be confirmed via cryo-scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The absence of cytotoxicity even at very high concentrations opens a wide range of different applications for this first-in-class material in the field of biomaterials.

Thermoresponsive polymers are frequently involved in the development of materials for various applications. Here, polymers containing poly(2- benzhydryl-2-oxazine) (pBhOzi) repeating units are described for the first time. The homopolymer pBhOzi and an ABA type amphiphile comprising two flanking hydrophilic A blocks of poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (pMeOx) and the hydrophobic aromatic pBhOzi central B block (pMeOx-b-pBhOzi-b-pMeOx) are synthesized and the latter is shown to exhibit inverse thermogelling properties at concentrations of 20 wt.% in water. This behavior stands in contrast to a homologue ABA amphiphile consisting of a central poly(2-benzhydryl-2-oxazoline) block (pMeOx-b-pBhOx-b-pMeOx). No inverse thermogelling is observed with this polymer even at 25 wt.%. For 25 wt.% pMeOx-b-pBhOzi-b-pMeOx, a surprisingly high storage modulus of approximate to 22 kPa and high values for the yield and flow points of 480 Pa and 1.3 kPa are obtained. Exceeding the yield point, pronounced shear thinning is observed. Interestingly, only little difference between self-assemblies of pMeOx-b-pBhOzi-b-pMeOx and pMeOx-b-pBhOx-b-pMeOx is observed by dynamic light scattering while transmission electron microscopy images suggest that the micelles of pMeOx-b-pBhOzi-b-pMeOx interact through their hydrophilic coronas, which is probably decisive for the gel formation. Overall, this study introduces new building blocks for poly(2-oxazoline) and poly(2-oxazine)-based self-assemblies, but additional studies will be needed to unravel the exact mechanism.

This study aims to estimate, model and map the spatial differences of ecosystem functioning expressed by community bioturbation potential (BPc), an indicator of benthic faunal function based on bioturbation, in the German part of the Baltic Sea. The usefulness of bioturbation potential calculations was justified by its moderate but significant correlation with estimates of bioturbation rates derived from diagenetic models fitted to the in situ measured sediment depth profiles of naturally-occurring chlorophyll-a tracer. Seasonal and interannual variations of BPc were assessed and key species contributing to bioturbation in the study area were identified. To generate the most accurate map of BPc and to investigate its predictability based on abiotic parameters, we have tested 3 different methodological approaches: i) benthic macrofauna community bioturbation potential was initially calculated per station and treated as response variable for species distribution modelling technique (RandomForest, RF) with relevant available environmental layers used as predictors, ii) 35 key species were selected as the most contributing to BPc (responsible for 90% of total BPc), their population bioturbation potential (BPp) estimates were used as response variables and RF models were fitted on each of them to predict their full coverage distributions, that were subsequently summed up to the BPc, iii) BPc values at stations were interpolated to a raster surface using a natural neighbour technique. The comparison with observed values of BPc indicated that map derived by natural neighbour interpolation was the most accurate one given the considered resolution of 1 × 1 km.

Background Post-infarction cardiac rupture (CR) such as ventricular septal rupture (VSR), free wall rupture (FWR), atrial septal rupture (ASR) or papillary muscle rupture (PMR) is a rare but dreaded complication in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) associated with a very poor prognosis with reported mortality rates between 60 and 100%. Therefore suitable risk stratification for secondary prevention seems crucial, but data on long-term survival und risk prediction in this especially vulnerable patient collective remains scarce. Methods Out of 11,641 patients presenting with AMI a total of 28 individuals suffering post-infarction CR were identified and stratified in "acute survivors of CR" (n=10) and "non-survivors of CR" (n=18). Cox regression hazard analysis was used to assess prognosticators on long-term survival. Results Ten patients (35.7%) survived the initial event. After a median follow-up time of 9years 2 (20%) of the survivors died, both due to cardiovascular causes. Younger age (p=0.023) and higher systolic blood pressure at admission (p=0.018) turned out to be significant predictors of long-term survival. Systolic blood pressure 48h after CR proved to be a strong and independent predictor for survival with an adjusted hazard ratio per one standard deviation of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.72–0.99; 0.048). Conclusion Hemodynamic stabilization and severity of cardiogenic shock were detected as clinically most common among patients suffering post-infarction CR and proved to be of major importance for survival. If survival of the initial event was achieved, satisfying long-term mortality could be reached.

Background: Recent evidence suggested levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and AST/ALT ratio (De-Ritis ratio) were associated with a worse outcome after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, their value for predicting long-term prognosis remained unknown. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic potential of transaminases on patient outcome after AMI from a long-term perspective. Methods: Data of a large AMI registry including 1355 consecutive patients were analyzed. The Cox regression hazard analysis was used to assess the impact of transaminases and the De-Ritis ratio on long-term mortality. Results: The median De-Ritis ratio for the entire study population was 1.5 (interquartile range [IQR]: 1.0–2.6). After a median follow-up time of 8.6 years, we found that AST (crude hazard ratio (HR) of 1.19 per 1-SD [95% confidence interval (CI): 1 .09–1.32, p &lt, 0.001]) and De-Ritis ratio (crude HR of 1.31 per 1-SD [95% CI: 1.18–1.44, 0.001]), but not ALT (p = 0.827), were significantly associated with long-term mortality after AMI. After adjustment for confounders independently, the De-Ritis ratio remained a strong and independent predictor for long-term mortality in the multivariate model with an adjusted HR of 1.23 per 1-SD (95% CI: 1.07–1.42, p = 0.004). Moreover, the De-Ritis ratio added prognostic value beyond N-terminal pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide, Troponin T, and Creatine Kinase. Conclusion: The De-Ritis ratio is a strong and independent predictor for long-term mortality after AMI. As a readily available biomarker in clinical routine, it might be used to identify patients at risk for fatal cardiovascular events and help to optimize secondary prevention strategies after AMI.

To estimate the contribution of a Mya arenaria population to total oxygen utilization (TOU) at different temperatures, the respiration rate of M. arenaria was measured for a full size range at 5 and 15 °C. In this study we measured respiration rates in a closed system while the clams were burrowed in sandy sediment, resembling their natural habitat. Rates were measured over a sufficient time span (24 h) to average varying activity phases during the measurements. We calculated a size-dependent respiration rate for M. arenaria and its variation with temperature. Temperature strongly affects the total population respiration and the contribution of different size classes to respiration of the total M. arenaria population. M. arenaria was estimated to contribute up to 70% to the total oxygen utilization of benthic communities analyzed in this study very much depending on the size distribution of the bivalve population present. Given a specific size distribution, smaller individuals had a stronger influence on the total oxygen utilization at colder temperature, while the influence of larger individuals grew with warmer temperature. Even though sizes contribute differently, a significant relation between abundance and respiration could be drawn in most cases analyzed. However, this relation should not be used as a general rule, but when estimating a population's metabolism the size distribution within that population has to be regarded.
