Purpose Climate change, poverty and pandemics are some of the complex real-world problems that are increasingly challenging higher education institutions (HEIs) to equip future graduates with meta-competences that have hitherto not been demanded. These graduates need to be able to capture and operate within complex systems and relationships. By focusing on complex real-world problems, this study aims to systematically review competences and frame meta-competences supporting curricula development in HEIs. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a systematic literature review according to the review protocol of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The review process resulted in the selection of 39 articles, which were subjected to qualitative synthesis to identify competences for tackling complex real-world problems. These competences were grouped into meta-competences and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Findings Scientific disciplines commonly describe four competences for tackling complex real-world problems including domain-specific competence, inter-relation competence, intrapersonal competence and normative competence. Originality This study found that inter-relation competence is in line with all the SDGs, which is considered important for tackling complex real-world problems across disciplines. Research limitations/implications A study in a survey design across disciplines and a weighting of these competences in respect to complex real-world problems aligned with the SDGs could contribute to a more consolidated and common understanding of the meta-competences identified.

Glyphosate is controversially discussed because of its alleged harmful effects on human health and the environment. Although it is approved until December 2022 in the European Union, the Austrian government discusses a national ban. Research on farmers’ intentions to deal with upcoming pesticide policy changes is limited and planned responses to a national glyphosate ban may inform accompanying measures and the development of weed management alternatives. Therefore, we have conducted 41 qualitative semi-structured interviews with farmers to explore their intended weed management if glyphosate-based herbicides were no longer available in Austria. The interviews were systematically analyzed, whereby the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) with its three social-psychological constructs served as guidance, i.e., attitude toward the planned behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control toward the planned behavior. We grouped farmers based on differences in their behavioral intentions toward glyphosate-free weed management, and identified four types of farmers by assigning group-specific attributes of the TPB constructs to the groups of farmers with similar behavioral intentions. Given a national glyphosate ban, the farmers intend to implement either mechanical or chemical alternatives, which would be solely applied or combined with changes in cultivation. Attitude toward the planned behavior, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control affect behavioral intentions, whereas injunctive norms do not differ much between the interviewed farmers. What unites the four types of farmers is that they would rather accept a glyphosate ban, if weed management alternatives with similar effectiveness and costs were available.

Ground-nesting wild bees are crucial for the pollination of wild plants and crops and thus human wellbeing. Arable land currently covers 14 million km(2) globally, but little is known about the role of arable fields as potential nesting habitats and how agricultural management, such as tillage system, affects nesting. We quantified nest density and nesting incidence (plot-level nest presence/absence) of ground-nesting bees in 12 conventionally tilled and 13 no-till winter cereal fields in southwestern Switzerland. In each field, nests were quantified in eight belt transects at increasing distances from field edges within an area of 400 m(2), and vegetation cover and soil properties were measured at nest sites and sites without nests. Nest density ranged from 0 (32% of fields) to 16 nests (mean: 4.0 nests) per 400 m(2), corresponding to 0 to 400 nests ha(-1) (mean: 101 nests ha(-1)). Fifteen nesting species were captured. Nest density was not significantly different between tillage systems. Nest density declined exponentially with distance from the field edge. Nest density and incidence were positively related to proportion of bare ground. Nests occurred across a wide range of soil textures and tended to increase with soil bulk density and sand content. Moreover, nest density tended to increase with the proportion of and proximity to areas under agri-environment scheme in the surrounding landscape. Synthesis and applications. Our study shows that arable fields, irrespective of tillage system, are used as nesting sites by various ground-nesting bee species, including important crop pollinators. The concentration of nests along field edges suggests that incentives to maintain small field sizes and to increase edge density have a great potential to support nesting of ground-nesting bees in agricultural landscapes. Moreover, measures to reduce crop cover, for example, through increased row spacing, offer a promising way to promote nesting opportunities in arable fields, in particular, if floral-rich agri-environment scheme areas are locally available. The complexity of emergency cases and the number of emergency patients have increased dramatically. Due to a reduced or even missing specialist medical staff in the emergency departments (EDs), medical knowledge is often used without professional supervision for the diagnosis. The result is a failure in diagnosis and treatment, even death in the worst case. Secondary: high expenditure of time and high costs. Using accurate patient data from the German national registry of the medical emergency departments (AKTIN-registry, Home - Notaufnahmeregister (aktin.org)), the most 20 frequent diagnoses were selected for creating explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) models as part of the ENSURE project (ENSURE (umg.eu)). 137.152 samples and 51 features (vital signs and symptoms) were analyzed. The XAI models achieved a mean area under the curve (AUC) one-vs-rest of 0.98 for logistic regression (LR) and 0.99 for the random forest (RF), and predictive accuracies of 0.927 (LR) and 0.99 (RF). Based on its grade of explainability and performance, the best model will be incorporated into a portable CDSS to improve diagnoses and outcomes of ED treatment and reduce cost. The CDSS will be tested in a clinical pilot study at EDs of selected hospitals in Germany.

Many clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have shown good performance in the research context, but only a few have been brought into routine care. Analysis of success or failure factors in the design of CDSS may support translation from development to routine care by guiding CDSS design and development along these factors. In this work, we propose a schema to describe CDSS designs in a consistent way. We focus on design criteria with the aim to investigate the observed translation gap in CDSS. Existing description models on different aspects relevant for CDSS are combined to a comprehensive schema that allows description and comparison of CDSS without limitation to the domain or architecture.

Combinatorial high-throughput methodologies are central for both screening and discovery in synthetic biochemistry and biomedical sciences. They are, however, often reliant on large-scale analyses and thus limited by a long running time and excessive materials cost. We here present a single-particle combinatorial multiplexed liposome fusion mediated by DNA for parallelized multistep and non-deterministic fusion of individual subattolitre nanocontainers. We observed directly the efficient (>93%) and leakage free stochastic fusion sequences for arrays of surface-tethered target liposomes with six freely diffusing populations of cargo liposomes, each functionalized with individual lipidated single-stranded DNA and fluorescently barcoded by a distinct ratio of chromophores. The stochastic fusion resulted in a distinct permutation of fusion sequences for each autonomous nanocontainer. Real-time total internal reflection imaging allowed the direct observation of >16,000 fusions and 566 distinct fusion sequences accurately classified using machine learning. The high-density arrays of surface-tethered target nanocontainers (~42,000 containers per mm2) offers entire combinatorial multiplex screens using only picograms of material. Furthermore, communication between science and society is facing new challenges, not least since the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to deal with these challenges and to provide target-oriented online teaching, new educational concepts for the transfer of knowledge to society are necessary. In the transfer project “Zukunftslabor Gesundheit” (ZLG), a didactic concept for the creation of E-Learning classes was developed. A key factor for the didactic concept is addressing heterogeneous target groups to reach the broadest possible spectrum of participants. The concept has already been used for the creation of the first ZLG E-Learning courses. This article outlines the central elements of the developed didactic concept and addresses the creation of the ZLG courses. The courses created so far appeal to different target groups and convey diverse types of knowledge at different levels of difficulty.

Cationic porphyrins bearing an alkyl side chain of 14 (2b) or 18 (2d) carbons dramatically inhibit proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells following treatment with light. We have compared two different ways of delivering porphyrin 2d: either in free form or engrafted into palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine liposomes (L-2d). Cell cytometry shows that while free 2d is taken up by pancreatic cancer cells by active (endocytosis) and passive (membrane fusion) transports, L-2d is internalized solely by endocytosis. Confocal microscopy showed that free 2d co-localizes with the cell membrane and lysosomes, whereas L-2d partly co-localizes with lysosomes and ER. It is found that free 2d inhibits the KRAS-Nrf2-GPX4 axis and strongly triggers lipid peroxidation, resulting in cell death by ferroptosis. By contrast, L-2d does not affect the KRAS-Nrf2-GPX4 axis and activates cell death mainly through apoptosis. Overall, our study demonstrates for the first time that cationic alkyl porphyrins, which have a IC50 ~ 23 nM, activate a dual mechanism of cell death, ferroptosis and apoptosis, where the predominant form depends on the delivery mode.

The global COVID-19 pandemic revealed the necessity for mobile and web-based solutions for a variety of medical processes, e.g., individual risk calculation, communication of health information and contact tracing. Many such solutions are provided in form of open source software. However, there are major obstacles to the sustainable long-term continuation of such projects. As the topic of sustainability strategies is complex, a classification would be useful to help new projects to identify relevant sustainability factors. Based on a literature review a classification for long-term success of open source software was created. This paper presents a classification focusing on five unique categories: (1) structural decision, (2) revenue generation, (3) user focus, (4) openness and (5) community building. It was developed within the NUM-COMPASS project, focusing content-wise on pandemic apps and structure-wise on open-source provision. We provide some insights into the community building dimension by discussing factors that go into building sustainable communities.

This paper examines how certified organic cotton initiatives (COCIs) influence community capitals in rural Peru, Tanzania and India using the community capitals framework (CCF). Case study analyses, including qualitative interviews of farmers, expert interviews and participatory observations, were conducted in Northern Peru, Northern Tanzania and Eastern India. The results show slight changes in community capitals in Peru, while comprehensive changes and spiraling-up effects were triggered by certified organic cotton farming initiatives in Tanzania and India. These community developments strongly depended on set measures, such as the extent of (1) partnership (e.g., contract farming), (2) input support (e.g., seeds, loans, community infrastructure), (3) capacity building (through training and advisory services), (4) group formation and (5) formation of cooperatives. Favorable environmental conditions and supporting local institutions facilitated spiraling-up effects, while social preconditions (e.g., gender inequality) strongly limited these effects. The research showed that COCIs have considerable potential to trigger spiraling-up effects in rural communities. However, the capacity strongly depends on the respective initiative and its ability to involve and empower farmers, i.e., to build up human and social capital.

The PosiThera project focuses on the management of chronic wounds, which is multi-professional and multi-disciplinary. For this context, a software prototype was developed in the project, which is intended to support medical and nursing staff with the assistance of artificial intelligence. In accordance with the user-centred design, national workshops were held at the beginning of the project with the involvement of domain experts in wound care in order to identify requirements and use cases of IT systems in wound care, with a focus on AI. In this study, the focus was on involving nursing and nursing science staff in testing the software prototype to gain insights into its functionality and usability. The overarching goal of the iterative testing and adaptation process is to further develop the prototype in a way that is close to care.

Small-scale inland fisheries are essential for livelihoods and food security in developing countries such as Burkina Faso. However, there is a gap in research on the ongoing transformation of the sector toward sustainability. This article analyzes the transition in inland fisheries and aquaculture in Burkina Faso and its implications in terms of natural resources management, food security, and livelihoods. We used the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) method as a reference transition framework and sampled using a mixed approach including 63 qualitative interviews, with fisheries experts and stakeholders, as well as quantitative data gathered through a representative survey with 204 fishermen’s households. We examined open access, concession, and co-management fisheries systems. Our results show that technical and institutional changes in fisheries over the last decades deeply shaped and transformed fisheries governance. Technological changes improved the sector’s productivity and its contribution to households’ livelihoods. Fishermen’s households consume up to 25% of fishermen’s catches. The share of the catches consumed is typically higher when commercial fishing is “not important”, but it remains typically low when it is “very important”. The income is higher for fishermen who allocate more time to or gain more income from animals breeding. The establishment of state-based management affects the balance between the coexisting traditional and newer “republican” institutions. Concession and co-management niches can contribute to the empowerment of the stakeholders and establishment of more effective management. However, they are still dominated by the traditional and centralized state regimes and governance. The support of the socio-technical landscape is paramount for the scaling-up of the fish farming niche, which has the potential to improve food security and sustain rural livelihoods in the least developed country, Burkina Faso.

The dissemination of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) in the medical field is slow due to various reasons such as lacking comprehensibility, low user acceptance, specific problem settings and unique application environments. This paper presents an illustration of the complexity of the CDS development process. Guided by procedural software development models already known from the field of software engineering, we developed a CDS-specific software lifecycle and a CDS development complexity illustration. We based the results on literature research of publicated field reports about successfully developed CDSS. We identified important CDS peculiarities related to the development and documentation process of CDSS and later merged them with generic software engineering models. We then created a CDS complexity illustration that can be used to structure future research in the CDS field as well as any standardisation processes.

The access to data in healthcare is an enabler for the implementation of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) in practice. The usage of CDSS aims to be of efficient assistance to healthcare providers. The aim of the BMBF project "PosiThera", is to support the involved professions in the treatment process of chronic wounds. In this study we implemented the formalized knowledge of chronic wound diagnosis into two different knowledge base approaches, the HL7 Arden Syntax and a Petri net approach. The motivating factor behind our study was to use both approaches for the implementation of the projects knowledge base and to compare the results. We implemented the formalized knowledge successfully in both approaches. The results of our comparison showed similarities and differences of the Arden Syntax and the Petri net approach, which might support the evolution of both approaches in the future.

Water resources are among the fundamental resources that are the most threatened worldwide by various pressures. This study applied the Driver&ndash, Pressure&ndash, State&ndash, Impact&ndash, Response (DPSIR) framework as an innovative tool to better understand the dynamic interlinkages between the different sources of multiple stressors on aquatic ecosystems in Burkina Faso. The triangulation of evidences from interviews, literature reviews, and strategic simulations shows that several human impacts as well as climate change and its effects (such as the decrease of the water level, and the increase of the surface water temperature) are detrimental to fish productivity, abundance, and average size. Furthermore, the ongoing demographic and nutritional transition is driving cumulative pressures on water and fish resources. In this context, the development of aquaculture could offer alternative livelihoods and help fish stocks in natural ecosystems to recover, thereby reducing fishermen&rsquo, s vulnerability and easing overfishing pressures. Further, the empowerment of the actors and their participation to reinforce fisheries regulation are required to escape the current &ldquo, regeneration trap&rdquo, and to achieve a sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems in Burkina Faso.

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) can be modified with aliphatic lipid chains and designed to be water soluble and able to spontaneously insert into phospholipid bilayers. Liposomes with 1.5% negatively charged POPG can be driven to fuse and mix their inner content volumes via functionalization with such lipidated peptide nucleic acids (LiPNAs). During fusion, only low amounts of leakage occur (5%). We describe here the synthesis and purification of such LiPNAs using an automated peptide synthesizer and the preparation of LiPNA functionalized liposomes. Further, we describe the measurement of LiPNA-induced fusion using a fluorescence-based assay for the content mixing between a liposome population with an encapsulated self-quenching fluorescent dye (SRB) and a buffer-filled liposome population.
