Polysaccharide-based composites embedding silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) represent a promising alternative to common antimicrobial materials because of the effective, broad-spectrum biocidal properties of AgNPs combined with the biocompatibility and environmental safety of the naturally occurring polymeric component. In this work, AgNPs stabilized with alginate chains (Alg@AgNPs) were successfully synthesized in situ within the polysaccharide solution through a wet chemical approach carried out at different concentrations of the silver salt precursor. Once obtained, the aqueous suspensions were electrospun to prepare non-woven membranes, showing a homogeneous nanostructured texture (with fiber diameter between 100 and 150 nm), which was found to be influenced by the size (between 20 and 35 nm) of the embedded metal nanoparticles. The biocidal potential of the nanocomposite mats was preliminarily tested against Gram-negative E. coli. The results showed that the antimicrobial response of the investigated samples occurred within a day of incubation and can be observed for AgNPs content in the polysaccharide fibers far below the nanomolar regime.

The EC-system of the TCV tokamak is progressively being upgraded with the addition of two MW-class dual-frequency gyrotrons (84 and 126 GHz/2s/1MW). In order to connect the two gyrotrons to the existing low field side and top launchers, new waveguide routing from gyrotron hall to TCV tokamak was designed and dedicated Matching Optics Units (MOU) have been developed. The internal optics of the system have been determined aiming at optimal coupling to the HE11 waveguides. The laws of quasi-optics were used to find quadratic surfaces to shape an incoming Gaussian beam representative of the gyrotron output into a beam matching the proper field distribution at the waveguide entrance and with HE11 content compatible with the system requirements. A solution with one flat (movable) mirror and two shaping mirrors was found and characterized with the physical optics code GRASP. The resulting field distribution is then truncated and projected onto the HE11 component to evaluate the design solution (coupled power at the waveguide entrance >98.4% and HE11 content >96.8% for both frequencies). The model and the results of this analysis will be presented and compared to a model based on the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld scalar diffraction integral. GRASP was also used to evaluate preliminary misalignment effects in terms of coupled power to the waveguide and the MOU design moved to the manufacturing phase. In parallel to the gyrotron integration and to extend the level of flexibility of the TCV EC-system, a modular closed divertor chamber is developed, requiring the X3 top-launcher to be redesigned. Preliminary antenna conceptual design studies including new curvature to cope with the requirements of modularity and flexibility will be presented.

In the current work, a new nanometric TiO2-based magnetic catalyst has been developed from an innovative material obtained from the treatment of iron and steel industrial wastes, i.e. Fly Ash. This magnetic material, "MaM", contains iron in the chemical-mineralogical composition and it represent an excellent example of circular economy: the industrial waste is converted into a high technological valued product. Through a one-step hydrothermal activation, the precursor is transformed in a zeolite with good magnetic properties. These properties could be exploited in the environmental field, such as the degradation of emerging pollutants in aqueous media by coupling it with a photocatalyst. In particular, in this work, TiO2 nanoparticles are synthesized through a sol-gel synthesis and then mixed with MaM by means of ultrasounds, in different pH conditions: acidic (0.1 M HNO3), neutral and alkaline (0.1 M NaOH). The MaM-TiO2 composites are subjected afterward to a mild thermal treatment. The synthesized devices are characterized by means of X-Ray diffraction measurements (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), while their photocatalytic activity is evaluated through the abatement of methylene blue (MB) solutions, according to the ISO norm 10678:2010. Based on experimental evidence, alkaline conditions lead to a homogeneous covering of the supporting material and therefore they are preferred to achieve a good photocatalytic activity; eventually the same conditions appeared to be crucial for the possibility to recover and subsequently reuse the composite material. In the present work, the crystallization of anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs), using different ferrite nanoparticles with different chemical composition, dimensions and shape as nucleation seeds, was investigated. In particular, CoFe₂O₄, NiFe₂O₄ and Fe₃O₄ NPs with a volume ratio equal to 1:1000 with respect of TiO₂ amount, were used in order to investigate the synthesis of nanocrystalline tetragonal anatase TiO₂ by a hydrothermal synthesis. In addition, Lu₂O₃ nanoparticles were also used to detect the effect of a non-magnetic nanoparticle on the synthesis and nanocrystallization of titania. For each sample, a deep physical characterization was performed by XRD (with a Rietveld refinement of the structural data), FE-SEM, STEM, HRTEM, DSC analysis and BET surface area measurement. Furthermore, for some samples, the photocatalytic activity was investigated by degradation of methylene blue in aqueous medium, in the framework of a standard ISO 10678:2010 protocol. The hydrothermal synthesis was performed with a 3 hours' thermal treatment, at a pressure of approximatively 9 bar and a temperature significantly lower (Tmax═150 °C) than the usual temperature necessary to obtain crystalline anatase TiO₂ (Tcryst═350 °C). The results give evidence that the mere presence of a nucleation seeds in the hydrothermal reactor, without any particular need for the composition and morphology, leads to crystalline anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles with high photocatalytic performances.

For a few years the multi-physics modelling of the resonance cavity (resonator) of MW-class continuous-wave gyrotrons, to be employed for electron cyclotron heating and current drive in magnetic confinement fusion machines, has gained increasing interest. The rising target power of the gyrotrons, which drives progressively higher Ohmic losses to be removed from the resonator, together with the need for limiting the resonator deformation as much as possible, has put more emphasis on the thermal-hydraulic and thermo-mechanic modeling of the cavity. To cope with that, a multi-physics simulator has been developed in recent years in a shared effort between several European institutions (the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie and Politecnico di Torino, supported by Fusion for Energy). In this paper the current status of the tool calibration and validation is addressed, aiming at highlighting where any direct or indirect comparisons with experimental data are missing and suggesting a possible roadmap to fill that gap, taking advantage of forthcoming tests in Europe.

Ayllón Guerola, Juan Manuel forma parte del TCV Team, The scattering of millimeter-wave beams from electron density fluctuations and the associated beam broadening are experimentally demonstrated. Using a dedicated setup, instantaneous deflection and (de-)focusing of the beam due to density blobs on the beam path are shown to agree with full-wave simulations. The detected time-averaged wave power transmitted through the turbulent plasma is reproduced by the radiative-transfer model implemented in the WKBeam code, which predicts a ∼50% turbulence-induced broadening of the beam cross-section. Background Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemics, masking policies have been advocated. While masks are known to prevent transmission towards other individuals, it is unclear if different types of facial masks can protect the user from inhalation. The present study compares in-vitro different commercial and custom-made facial masks at different distances and breathing patterns. Methods Masks were placed on a head mannequin connected to a lung simulator, using a collecting filter placed after the mannequin airway. Certified, commercial and custom-made masks were tested at three different distances between the emitter and the mannequin: 40 cm, 80 cm and 120 cm. Two patterns of breathing were used, simulating normal and polypneic respiration. A solution of methylene blue was nebulized with a jet nebulizer and different mask-distance-breathing pattern combinations were tested. The primary endpoint was the inhaled fraction, defined as the amount of methylene blue detected with spectrophotometry expressed as percent of the amount detected in a reference condition of zero distance and no mask. Findings We observed a significant effect of distance (p < 0.001), pattern of breathing (p = 0.040) and type of mask (p < 0.001) on inhaled fraction. All masks resulted in lower inhaled fraction compared to breathing without mask (p < 0.001 in all comparisons), ranging from 41.1% ± 0.3% obtained with a cotton mask at 40 cm distance with polypneic pattern to Discussion Distance, type of device and breathing pattern resulted in highly variable inhaled fraction. While the use of all types of masks resulted relevantly less inhalation compared to distancing alone, only high-grade certified devices (FFP3 and the combination of FFP2 + surgical mask) ensured negligible inhaled fraction in all conditions.

Alginate-based electrospun nanofibers prepared via electrospinning technique represent a class of materials with promising applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. However, to date, the effect of alginate molecular mass and block composition on the biological response of such systems remains to some extent unclear. As such, in the present work, three alginates (i.e., M.pyr, L.hyp, A.nod) with different molecular features are employed to prepare nanofibers whose ability to promote cell adhesion is explored by using both skin and bone cell lines. Initially, a preliminary investigation of the raw materials is carried out via rheological and zeta-potential measurements to determine the different grade of polyelectrolyte behaviour of the alginate samples. Specifically, both the molecular mass and block composition are found to be important factors affecting the alginate response, with long chains and a predominance of guluronic moieties leading to a marked polyelectrolyte nature (i.e., lower dependence of the solution viscosity upon the polymer concentration). Subsequently, physically crosslinked alginate nanofibrous mats are first morphologically characterized via both scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, which show a homogenous and defect-free structure, and their biological response is then evaluated. Noticeably, fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines do not show significant differences in terms of cell adhesion on the three mats (i.e., 30-40% and 10-20% with respect to the seeded cells, respectively), with the formers presenting a greater affinity toward the alginate-based nanofibers. Conversely, both the investigated osteoblast cells are characterized by a distinct behaviour depending on the alginate type. Specifically, polysaccharide samples with an evident polyelectrolyte nature are found to better promote cell viability (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 15-36% with respect to seeded cells) compared to the ones displaying a nearly neutral behaviour (i.e., cell adhesion in the range 5-25% with respect to seeded cells). Therefore, the obtained results, despite being preliminary, suggest that the alginate type (i.e., molecular structure properties) may play a topical role in conditioning the efficiency of healing patches for bone reparation, but it has a negligible effect in the case of skin regeneration.

Nanoparticles (NPs) show various properties depending on their composition, size, and surface coating, which shape their interactions with biological systems. In particular, NPs have been shown to interact with immune cells, that represent a sensitive surveillance system of external and internal stimuli. In this light, in vitro models represent useful tools for investigating nano-bio-interactions in immune cells of different organisms, including invertebrates. In this work, the effects of selected types of NPs with different core composition, size and functionalization (custom-made PVP-AuNP and commercial nanopolystyrenes PS-NH2 and PS-COOH) were investigated in the hemocytes of the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. The role of exposure medium was evaluated using either artificial seawater (ASW) or hemolymph serum (HS). Hemocyte morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and different functional parameters (lysosomal membrane stability, phagocytosis, and lysozyme release) were evaluated. The results show distinct morphological and functional changes induced in mussel hemocytes depending on the NP type and exposure medium. Mussel hemocytes may represent a powerful alternative in vitro model for a rapid pre-screening strategy for NPs, whose utilization will contribute to the understanding of the possible impact of environmental exposure to NPs in marine invertebrates.

The Swiss Plasma Center is involved in the development and the operation of gyrotrons for fusion application (TCV tokamak, W7-X, ITER, DEMO) as well as for basic science applications such as Nuclear Maggnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In this framework, embedded control systems based on National Instrument (NI) compact Reconfigurable Input Output (cRIO) and compact Data AcQuisition (cDAQ) offer versatile solutions for dedicated applications. Three specific developments are briefly presented and discussed here. First, a complete control system based on cRIO material has been implemented in a Modulator Power Supply. Second, the development of a compact system, based on a cDAQ solution used for the characterization of the RF losses on the various gyrotron components. Third, the installation of a whole control system for a Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP/NMR) gyrotron dedicated to non-specialist gyrotron users. The flexibility given by these compact control systems and acquisition could offer multiple solutions in many applications for fusion research.

The operational range and the reactor relevance of the TCV experiments are being enhanced by two sets of major upgrades. The first includes the installation of neutral beam injection (NBI) and new electron cyclotron (EC) auxiliary heating sources, to reach ITER relevant beta values and vary the electron to ion temperature ratio. A 15?30?keV, 1 MW tangential NBI system has been operational on TCV since 2015. A second beam of 1 MW, 50?60?keV ion energy, also aligned tangentially but opposite to the first beam, is foreseen to approach beta limits, vary the applied torque through zero and probe suprathermal ion physics. For the EC power, two 0.75 MW gyrotrons at the second harmonic have been installed. The next step will add two 1 MW dual frequency gyrotrons, one of which is currently being commissioned. These heating upgrades will increase the total available power for high-density plasmas from 1.25 MW to 5.0 MW. The rest of the upgrade consists of installing an in-vessel structure to form a divertor chamber of increased closure, to reach higher neutral divertor densities and impurity compression and thereby extend TCV divertor regimes toward more reactor relevant conditions for conventional and advanced divertor configurations. Graphite gas baffles will be installed inside the TCV vessel to delineate divertor and main chamber regions. The first set of baffles features 32 tiles on the high and 64 tiles on the low-field side, with geometry guided by simulations performed using the SOLPS-ITER code. The baffles are expected to be effective for a wide range of divertor configurations, including snowflake and super-X divertors, yet maintain plasma close to the inner wall for improved passive stabilization. The baffle dimensions may be varied in the future to modify the divertor closure. Control of the plasma, neutral and impurity densities will be achieved by a combination of toroidally distributed gas injection valves and impurity seeding, and a possible addition of cryo-condensation pumps. Significant diagnostic developments will be undertaken, to better characterize the divertor plasma, measure power and particle deposition at the strike points, and, specifically, improve our physics understanding of the detachment process.

In this work, we have studied the effect of the dielectric material on the properties of the modes in a smooth metallic gyrotron beam tunnel partially filled with a lossy dielectric material. Two kinds of modes have been identified, one located inside the empty region and the other inside the dielectric material. It has been seen that these kinds are not equally affected by the changes in the geometry and dielectric characteristics.

The status of the THALES 140 GHz 1 MW CW industrial gyrotron program for the W7-X stellarator is discussed in this paper. The industrial design and performances arc briefly discussed with a focus on the tube reliability and endurance.

In this contribution, the photoactivity upon activation by simulated sunlight of zinc oxide (ZnO) obtained from two different synthetic pathways (Acetate and Nitrate) is investigated for water purification. Different reagents and processes were exploited to obtain ZnO nanoparticles. Products have been characterized by means of X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy along with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer, Dynamic Light Scattering, and Diffuse Reflectance Measurements, to highlight the different outcomes ascribable to each synthesis. A comparison of characteristics and performances was also carried out with respect to commercial ZnO. Nanoparticles of this semiconductor can be obtained as aggregates with different degrees of purity, porosity, and shape, and their physical-chemical properties have been addressed to the specific use in wastewater treatment, testing their effectiveness on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant. Excluding the commercial sample, experimental results evidenced a better photocatalytic behavior for the ZnO Nitrate sample annealed at 500 °C, which was found to be pure and stable in water, suggesting that ZnO could be effectively exploited as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of emerging pollutants in water, provided that thermal treatment is included in the synthetic process.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a atividade antibacteriana contra Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa de dois revestimentos endotraqueais com nanopartículas e fotocatálise sob luz visível. Métodos: Testaram-se dois tipos de nanopartículas de titânio: anatase padrão (TiO2) e TiO2 nano-dopada (N-TiO2). As nanopartículas foram colocadas em superfície interna de segmentos de tubos endotraqueais comerciais, aplicadas sobre um filtro de acetato de celulose; os tubos endotraqueais controle foram deixados sem revestimento de nanopartículas. Em cada tubo endotraqueal foi inoculado um total de 150 unidades formadoras de colônia e, a seguir, estes foram expostos a uma fonte de luz fluorescente (3700 lux, comprimento de onda de 300 - 700nm) por 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 e 80 minutos. Contaram-se as Unidades Formadoras de Colônia após 24 horas de incubação a 37ºC. A inativação bacteriana foi calculada como a redução porcentual do crescimento bacteriano em comparação a tubos não expostos à luz. Resultados: Na ausência de luz, não se observou qualquer atividade antibacteriana relevante contra qualquer das cepas estudadas. Para P. aeruginosa, ambos os revestimentos tiveram inativação bacteriana mais elevada do que o controle em qualquer dos momentos de avaliação (p < 0,001), sendo que não se observaram diferenças entre o revestimento padrão e nano-dopado. Para S. aureus, a inativação foi maior que os controles, começando a partir de 5 minutos para nano-dopado (p = 0,018) e 10 minutos para o revestimento padrão (p = 0,014); a inativação com a forma nano-dopada foi maior do que com a forma padrão aos 20 minutos (p < 0,001), 40 minutos (p < 0,001) e 60 minutos (p < 0,001). Conclusões: O revestimento com nanopartículas de titânio comercial padrão e nano-dopado inibiu o crescimento bacteriano sob a luz fluorescente visível. o revestimento nano-dopado teve maior atividade antibacteriana contra S. aureus em comparação à atividade observada com o revestimento com anatase padrão. ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa of two nanoparticle endotracheal tube coatings with visible light-induced photocatalysis. Methods: Two types of titanium dioxide nanoparticles were tested: standard anatase (TiO2) and N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2). Nanoparticles were placed on the internal surface of a segment of commercial endotracheal tubes, which were loaded on a cellulose acetate filter; control endotracheal tubes were left without a nanoparticle coating. A bacterial inoculum of 150 colony forming units was placed in the endotracheal tubes and then exposed to a fluorescent light source (3700 lux, 300-700 nm wavelength) for 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 minutes. Colony forming units were counted after 24 hours of incubation at 37°C. Bacterial inactivation was calculated as the percentage reduction of bacterial growth compared to endotracheal tubes not exposed to light. Results: In the absence of light, no relevant antibacterial activity was shown against neither strain. For P. aeruginosa, both coatings had a higher bacterial inactivation than controls at any time point (p < 0.001), and no difference was observed between TiO2 and N-TiO2. For S. aureus, inactivation was higher than for controls starting at 5 minutes for N-TiO2 (p = 0.018) and 10 minutes for TiO2 (p = 0.014); inactivation with N-TiO2 was higher than that with TiO2 at 20 minutes (p < 0.001), 40 minutes (p < 0.001) and 60 minutes (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Nanosized commercial and N-doped TiO2 inhibit bacterial growth under visible fluorescent light. N-TiO2 has higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus compared to TiO2.

A 550-fold increase in the liquid state C-13 NMR signal of a 50 mu L sample was obtained by first hyperpolarizing the sample at 20 K using a gyrotron (260 GHz), then, switching its frequency in order to apply 100 W for 1.5 s so as to melt the sample, finally, turning off the gyrotron to acquire the C-13 NMR signal. The sample stays in its NMR resonator, so the sequence can be repeated with rapid cooling as the entire cryostat stays cold. DNP and thawing of the sample are performed only by the switchable and tunable gyrotron without external devices. Rapid transition from DNP to thawing in one second time scale was necessary especially in order to enhance liquid H-1 NMR signal. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In magnetically confined fusion devices, the use of millimeter waves (mmw) at the electron cyclotron (EC) frequencies ranges from plasma diagnostics to plasma heating, current drive and core confinement preservation. For large tokamaks such as ITER, numerical simulations and analytical estimates suggest that plasma edge turbulence could significantly broaden the EC-beam, possibly preventing tearing modes stabilization at the designed power levels. We report measurements of mmw-beam scattering by plasma turbulence in the TCV tokamak. A mmw-Gaussian beam is injected from the top of the device and the transmitted power is measured at the bottom. We show that the measured plasma density fluctuations in the upper part of the scrape-off layer (SOL) are the cause of fluctuations of the transmitted mmw-power. A full-wave model based on COMSOL multiphysics is presented and compared against the wave-kinetic-equation solver WKBeam in a TCV case. Using the SOL turbulence simulations from the GBS code, comparison between the scattering effect on the mmw-beam with both the full-wave simulations and the experiments are ongoing. We also present experimental observations of rapid changes in the transmitted power caused by ELMs in ELMy H-mode plasma.

The research program of the TCV tokamak ranges from conventional to advanced-tokamak scenarios and alternative divertor configurations, to exploratory plasmas driven by theoretical insight, exploiting the device's unique shaping capabilities. Disruption avoidance by real-time locked mode prevention or unlocking with electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) was thoroughly documented, using magnetic and radiation triggers. Runaway generation with high-Z noble-gas injection and runaway dissipation by subsequent Ne or Ar injection were studied for model validation. The new 1 MW neutral beam injector has expanded the parameter range, now encompassing ELMy H-modes in an ITER-like shape and nearly non-inductive H-mode discharges sustained by electron cyclotron and neutral beam current drive. In the H-mode, the pedestal pressure increases modestly with nitrogen seeding while fueling moves the density pedestal outwards, but the plasma stored energy is largely uncorrelated to either seeding or fueling. High fueling at high triangularity is key to accessing the attractive small edge-localized mode (type-II) regime. Turbulence is reduced in the core at negative triangularity, consistent with increased confinement and in accord with global gyrokinetic simulations. The geodesic acoustic mode, possibly coupled with avalanche events, has been linked with particle flow to the wall in diverted plasmas. Detachment, scrape-off layer transport, and turbulence were studied in L- and H-modes in both standard and alternative configurations (snowflake, super-X, and beyond). The detachment process is caused by power 'starvation' reducing the ionization source, with volume recombination playing only a minor role. Partial detachment in the H-mode is obtained with impurity seeding and has shown little dependence on flux expansion in standard single-null geometry. In the attached L-mode phase, increasing the outer connection length reduces the in-out heat-flow asymmetry. A doublet plasma, featuring an internal X-point, was achieved successfully, and a transport barrier was observed in the mantle just outside the internal separatrix. In the near future variable-configuration baffles and possibly divertor pumping will be introduced to investigate the effect of divertor closure on exhaust and performance, and 3.5 MW ECRH and 1 MW neutral beam injection heating will be added., This work was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The first unit of the dual-frequency gyrotron, 84126GHz/1MW/2s, for the upgrade of the TCV ECH system has been delivered and is presently being commissioned. During a first phase, long-pulse operation (T RF $\gt 0.5\mathrm{s})$ has been achieved and powers in excess of 0.93MW/1.1s and 1MW/1.2s have been measured in the evacuated RF-load at the two frequencies, 84GHz (TE$_{17,5}$ mode) and 126GHz (TE$_{26,7}$ mode), respectively. Considering the different rf losses in the experimental setup, the power level generated in the gyrotron cavity is in excess of 1.1MW and 1.2MW, with a corresponding electronic efficiency of 35% and 36%. These values are in excellent agreement with the design parameters and would likely lead to a gyrotron total efficiency higher than 50% in case of implementation of a depressed collector. The gyrotron behavior is remarkably reliable and robust with the pulse length extension to 2s presently only limited by external auxiliary systems.

Gyrotron R&D within the EUROfusion Work Package Heating and Current Drive (WPHCD) is addressing the challenging requirements posed on gyrotrons by the European concept for a demonstration fusion power plant (EU DEMO). These requirements, as specified within WPHCD, ask for highly reliable and robust long-pulse operation of the gyrotron, delivering 2 MW of microwave power at frequencies above 200 GHz with a high overall efficiency above 60% and the option for fast frequency step-tunability. To meet these targets, which are clearly beyond today's state-of-the-art, the R&D activities within WPHCD are organized in five main branches: these are the experimental verification of the advanced coaxial gyrotron technology at long pulses, the development of a coaxial gyrotron meeting the EU DEMO requirements, the development of multi-stage depressed collectors for enhanced energy recovery, the development of large broadband diamond windows to allow fast frequency tunability of the gyrotron, and the studies on further innovations and improvement of critical gyrotron components, in view of optimization of performance, reliability, and industrialization. The paper presents the progress made on these activities, the recent results, and the near-term planning. The major recent achievements include (i) the experimental validation of the fabrication of the new, water-cooled components for the longer-pulse coaxial gyrotron at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, by demonstrating 2.2 MW at 170 GHz with 33% efficiency without depressed collector, (ii) the design of key components for a 2 MW, 170/204 GHz dual-frequency coaxial gyrotron, (iii) the design of a two-stage depressed collector with 77% efficiency, (iv) the first-ever production, in an industrial plasma reactor, of large chemical vapor deposition diamond wafers of 180mm diameter, (v) the procurement of an advanced electron gun with coated emitter edges, and (vi) advances in the theoretical and numerical modelling for investigating improved concepts for the gyrotron beam tunnel and cavity.

In Europe, the research and development with main focus on achieving robust industrial designs of series gyrotrons for electron cyclotron heating and current drive of today's nuclear fusion experiments and towards a future DEMOnstration fusion power plant is constantly progressing. The R&D is following two different paths. Both are complementing each other: Firstly, it is the adaption of the physical design and basic mechanical construction of the reliably operating 140 GHz, 1 MW CW (spec.: 920 kW, 1800 s) gyrotron of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), Greifswald, Germany. With regards to time and costs it is the target to perform reliable developments of fusion gyrotrons with advanced specifications for today's plasma fusion experiments. Main focus is on the development of the first EU 170 GHz, 1 MW CW (3600 s) gyrotron for the installation in ITER, Cadarache, France. Another adaption is the dual-frequency 126/84 GHz 1 MW (2 s) gyrotron upgrade for the medium size TCV tokamak, Lausanne, Switzerland. Finally, it is the upgrade of the W7-X gyrotron design towards an RF output power per unit of up to 1.5 MW and possible dual-frequency operation by keeping the basic mechanical construction. Additional to the proven design it allows to fit the new 1.5 MW gyrotron into the already existing infrastructure and to reuse existing W7-X gyrotron auxiliaries, e. g. the high-power voltage supply (HV PS) and the superconducting (SC) magnet. The second R&D path is defined by the complementary approach with regards to development risks towards a future gyrotron which shall fulfil the significant more advanced specifications of a future EU DEMO. The starting point is the 2 MW EU/KIT coaxial-cavity gyrotron design. Main requirements are an RF output power of 2 MW CW at above 200 GHz, multiple operating frequencies, frequency step-tunability and a total efficiency above 60 %.

TiO2 was prepared via sol–gel synthesis, and in order to obtain crystallized anatase in a colloidal suspension, it was subjected to a hydrothermal process in the presence of a minimum amount of nanoparticles, which acted as nucleation seeds. Concurrently, high-pH sol–gel syntheses were performed with the increase in NH3 solutions as a comparison for the samples’ activity. Polydimethylsiloxane was chosen as supporting material for the TiO2 nanoparticles for its high surface area and its stability against catalyst’s photoactivity. They were both processed with the electrospinning technique: It was possible to disperse titania among PDMS fibers and to obtain detachable polymeric membranes with the appearance of white soft sheets. These membranes show antibacterial activity under fluorescent light, and thus, they may be used as a film for several kinds of surfaces. The synthesized samples were controlled and characterized by means of rheological measurements, scanning electron microscopy images together with EDS maps, differential scanning calorimetry analyses, diffuse reflectance spectra for energy gap (Egap) calculations and recycling photocatalytic experiments, while Escherichia Coli inactivation gave evidence of the antibacterial activity.

The future EC systems will consist of several gyrotron sources providing MW-level millimeter wave power at a frequency around or above 170 GHz. The development of matched loads is necessary to test the new sources, the components for the transmission lines and the launchers, and must ensure high qualification for compatibility with the nuclear environment. The development at IFP-CNR and LTC of several compact high-power prototypes during the last decade led to a refinement of the overall design, resulting in the present low-reflectivity vacuum-compatible loads. The activity on loads is supported by F4E in view of the development of the EU gyrotron for ITER and required high-power tests at QST (Naka, Japan). Qualification is now supported by new tests at SPC (Lausanne, Switzerland) using the FALCON test-bed designed to test components and the EU gyrotron prototype for the EC system of ITER. These high-power tests, performed on the first CW prototype load (provided with 16 + 16 cooling channels in parallel) and shown in this paper, highlighted the need to improve the mechanical, vacuum and hydraulic design to reach the final goal of 1000s at ∼1 MW.

Introduction: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited cause of bronchiectasis where defects in motile cilia result in failure to clear mucus. Individuals have life-long productive cough and recurrent infections Methods: The embarc registry is a prospective pan-European observational study of adults with bronchiectasis. Data entered into the registry between March 2015 and Jan 2018 was assessed. Disease severity in PCD was compared to two age and gender matched cohorts, the first consisting of individuals with immune deficiency and a second with idiopathic disease. Results: 287/11204 individuals (2.6%) were reported to have PCD. 65% were female, reflecting the female predominance in the total embarc cohort (60%); Individuals with PCD were significantly younger than others in the registry, 49 years (stdev ±16.2) vs 65yrs(14.6). Individuals with bronchiectasis due to PCD had increased disease severity, measured by bronchiectasis severity index 7.5 (±4.9) when compared to age and gender matched cohorts with idiopathic disease 5.7 (±5.2) or immune deficiency 5.9 (±4.7). Analysis of components contributing to the BSI score revealed an average 10% reduction in FEV1% predicted (PCD 65.0(23.2) vs Immune 74.4(24.0) or Idiopathic 75.3(24.3)) and increased incidence of pseudomonas isolation from sputum in PCD patients (46%) when compared to other groups (Immune deficiency 16%, Idiopathic 18%). Conclusion: A typical PCD patient presents to the bronchiectasis clinic younger than their counterparts. When patient age is accounted for, bronchiectasis due to PCD is more severe than idiopathic bronchiectasis or disease due to an immune deficiency. There has been a growing interest, over the past few years, on understanding the effect on radio frequency waves due to turbulence in the scrape-off layer of tokamak plasmas. While the far scrape-off layer density width is of the order of centimetres in contemporary tokamaks, in ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), and in future fusion reactors, the corresponding width will be of the order of tens of centimetres. As such, this could impact the spectral properties of the waves and, consequently, the transport of wave energy and momentum to the core plasma. The turbulence in the scrape-off layer spans a broad range of spatial scales and includes blobs and filaments that are elongated along the magnetic field lines. The propagation of radio frequency waves through this tenuous plasma is given by Maxwell’s equations. The characteristic properties of the plasma appear as a permittivity tensor in the expression for the current in Ampere’s equation. This paper develops a formalism for expressing the permittivity of a turbulent plasma using the homogenization technique. This technique has been extensively used to express the dielectric properties of composite materials that are spatially inhomogeneous, for example, due to the presence of micro-structures. In a similar vein, the turbulent plasma in the scrape-off layer is spatially inhomogeneous and can be considered as a composite material in which the micro-structures are filaments and blobs. The classical homogenization technique is not appropriate for the magnetized plasma in the scrape-off layer, as the radio frequency waves span a broad range of wavelengths and frequencies – from tens of megahertz to hundreds of gigahertz. The formalism in this paper makes use of the Fourier space components of the electric and magnetic fields of the radio frequency waves for the scattered fields and fields inside the filaments and blobs. These are the eigenvectors of the dispersion matrix which, using the Green’s function approach, lead to a homogenized dielectric tensor.

Nuclear hyperpolarization in the liquid state by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has been of great interest because of its potential use in NMR spectroscopy of small samples of biological and chemical compounds in aqueous media. Liquid state DNP generally requires microwave resonators in order to generate an alternating magnetic field strong enough to saturate electron spins in the solution. As a consequence, the sample size is limited to dimensions of the order of the wavelength, and this restricts the sample volume to less than 100 nL for DNP at 9 T (∼260 GHz). We show here a new approach that overcomes this sample size limitation. Large saturation of electron spins was obtained with a high-power (∼150 W) gyrotron without microwave resonators. Since high power microwaves can cause serious dielectric heating in polar solutions, we designed a planar probe which effectively alleviates dielectric heating. A thin liquid sample of 100 μm of thickness is placed on a block of high thermal conductivity aluminum nitride, with a gold coating that serves both as a ground plane and as a heat sink. Experiments on TCV are designed to complement the work at large integrated tokamak facilities (such as JET) to provide a stepwise approach to extrapolation to ITER and DEMO in areas where medium-size tokamaks can often exploit their experimental capabilities and flexibility. Improving the understanding and control requirements of burning plasmas is a major scientific challenge, requiring access to plasma regimes and configurations with high normalized plasma pressure and a wide range of ion to electron temperature ratios, including T-e/T-i similar to 1. These conditions will be explored by adding a 1 MW neutral heating beam to TCV's auxiliary for direct ion heating (2015) and increasing the ECH power injected in X-mode at the third harmonic (2 MW in 2015-2016). Pure TiO2, N- and Cu-doped and double-doped (Cu, N) samples were synthesized via sol–gel route in order to investigate the local and average structure of the crystalline TiO2 synthesized under different pH conditions. Samples are mainly constituted of anatase phase, even though low but significant amounts of secondary brookite grew in most samples. A detailed structural characterization was performed by means of synchrotron X-ray elastic scattering experiments; structural data of the different samples were obtained by means of the Rietveld refinement, whereas insights about their local structure were gained by means of the pair distribution analysis.

The engineering design and R&D of auxiliary heating systems and their sub-systems are a key activities in the frame of the present conceptual design phase for a first of a kind DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant in order to develop a system capable of achieving and controlling burning plasmas. In the frame of the EU DEMO reference design, the R&D activities consider the injection of about 50 MW of Electron Cyclotron (EC) power to support and assist different plasma phases. As the project is still in the conceptual phase, a range of options for gyrotrons, transmission lines and antennas is under assessment taking into account the guidelines for the integration of the EC system in a nuclear reactor and a maximal achievable reliability and availability of the EC power during operation.

Recently developed self-consistent models for beam-wave interaction simulations of a gyrotron oscillator are used to study spurious backward-wave instabilities in smooth-wall metallic beam ducts. Starting from a simple case with a basic geometry, the influence of the beam duct geometry and the magnetic field profile on the instabilities threshold and on the quality of the electron beam are studied.

A quasi-optical (q.o.) mode converter has been designed for the MW-level dual-frequency gyrotron which is under development for the upgrade of the electron cyclotron (EC) system of the TCV tokamak. The gyrotron design is essentially based on modifications of the W7-X gyrotron [1]. The launcher of the output coupler has been synthesized to adapt the geometry of the quasi-elliptical mirror with same size as in the W7-X gyrotron for both operating modes (TE17,5 @ 85GHz, TE26,7 @ 126GHz). The simulation results show that high conversion efficiencies and low stray radiations in the q.o. system can be achieved.

The Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) is planning a divertor upgrade for the TCV tokamak. The upgrade aims at extending the research of conventional and alternative divertor configurations to operational scenarios and divertor regimes of greater relevance for a fusion reactor. The main elements of the upgrade are the installation of an in-vessel structure to form a divertor chamber of variable closure and enhanced diagnostic capabilities, an increase of the pumping capability of the divertor chamber and the addition of new divertor poloidal field coils. The project follows a staged approach and is carried out in parallel with an upgrade of the TCV heating system. First calculations using the EMC3-Eirene code indicate that realistic baffles together with the planned heating upgrade will allow for a significantly higher compression of neutral particles in the divertor, which is a prerequisite to test the power dissipation potential of various divertor configurations. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a atividade antibacteriana contra Staphylococcus aureus e Pseudomonas aeruginosa de dois revestimentos endotraqueais com nanopartículas e fotocatálise sob luz visível. Métodos: Testaram-se dois tipos de nanopartículas de titânio: anatase padrão (TiO2) e TiO2 nano-dopada (N-TiO2). As nanopartículas foram colocadas em superfície interna de segmentos de tubos endotraqueais comerciais, aplicadas sobre um filtro de acetato de celulose; os tubos endotraqueais controle foram deixados sem revestimento de nanopartículas. Em cada tubo endotraqueal foi inoculado um total de 150 unidades formadoras de colônia e, a seguir, estes foram expostos a uma fonte de luz fluorescente (3700 lux, comprimento de onda de 300 - 700nm) por 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 e 80 minutos. Contaram-se as Unidades Formadoras de Colônia após 24 horas de incubação a 37ºC. A inativação bacteriana foi calculada como a redução porcentual do crescimento bacteriano em comparação a tubos não expostos à luz. Resultados: Na ausência de luz, não se observou qualquer atividade antibacteriana relevante contra qualquer das cepas estudadas. Para P. aeruginosa, ambos os revestimentos tiveram inativação bacteriana mais elevada do que o controle em qualquer dos momentos de avaliação (p < 0,001), sendo que não se observaram diferenças entre o revestimento padrão e nano-dopado. Para S. aureus, a inativação foi maior que os controles, começando a partir de 5 minutos para nano-dopado (p = 0,018) e 10 minutos para o revestimento padrão (p = 0,014); a inativação com a forma nano-dopada foi maior do que com a forma padrão aos 20 minutos (p < 0,001), 40 minutos (p < 0,001) e 60 minutos (p < 0,001). Conclusões: O revestimento com nanopartículas de titânio comercial padrão e nano-dopado inibiu o crescimento bacteriano sob a luz fluorescente visível. o revestimento nano-dopado teve maior atividade antibacteriana contra S. aureus em comparação à atividade observada com o revestimento com anatase padrão.

The proposed Divertor Test Tokamak, DTT, aims at studying power exhaust and divertor load in an integrated plasma scenario. Additional heating systems have the task to provide heating to reach a reactor relevant power flow in the SOL and guarantee the necessary PSEP/R together adequate plasma performances. About 40 MW of heating power are foreseen to have PSEP/R 15 MW/m. A mix of the three heating systems presently proposed for ITER has been chosen, assuring the necessary flexibility in scenario development. An ECRH system at 170 GHz will provide 10 MW at plasma for several tasks, such as: bulk electron heating to bring the plasma in the high confinement regime, current profile tailoring by localized CD, avoidance of impurity accumulation, MHD control and current ramp up and ramp down assistance. Together with the EC system, 15MW of ICRH (in the range 60-90MHz) will provide the remaining bulk plasma heating power, on both electrons and ions. ICRH, in minority scheme, will produce fast ions, with an isotropic perpendicular distribution, allowing the study of fast particle driven instabilities like alphas in D-T burning plasmas. The heating schemes foreseen in DTT are 33He and H minority as well as Deuterium 2ndnd harmonic. The addition of 15 MW of NBI, later in the project, could provide a mainly isotropic parallel fast ion distribution to simulate the alpha heating scheme of a reactor. The NBI primary aim is to support plasma heating during the flat top phase when the need of central power deposition and the minimization of the shine-through risk suggest a beam energy around 300 keV. In the first phase of the DTT project the available power will be at least 25 MW, to be increased during the lifetime of the machine.
