It reveals that most existing methods focus on single biofabrication process stages and components, and there is a significant gap in approaches that utilize accurate models encompassing both biological and technological aspects. This analysis underscores the indispensable role of these methods in understanding and effectively manipulating complex biological systems and the necessity for developing computational methods that span multiple stages and components. The review concludes that such comprehensive computational methods are essential for developing innovative and efficient Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine biofabrication solutions, driving forward advancements in this dynamic and evolving field.

Abstract Background The Biology System Description Language (BiSDL) is an accessible, easy-to-use computational language for multicellular synthetic biology. It allows synthetic biologists to represent spatiality and multi-level cellular dynamics inherent to multicellular designs, filling a gap in the state of the art. Developed for designing and simulating spatial, multicellular synthetic biological systems, BiSDL integrates high-level conceptual design with detailed low-level modeling, fostering collaboration in the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle. BiSDL descriptions directly compile into Nets-Within-Nets (NWNs) models, offering a unique approach to spatial and hierarchical modeling in biological systems. Results BiSDL’s effectiveness is showcased through three case studies on complex multicellular systems: a bacterial consortium, a synthetic morphogen system and a conjugative plasmid transfer process. These studies highlight the BiSDL proficiency in representing spatial interactions and multi-level cellular dynamics. The language facilitates the compilation of conceptual designs into detailed, simulatable models, leveraging the NWNs formalism. This enables intuitive modeling of complex biological systems, making advanced computational tools more accessible to a broader range of researchers. Conclusions BiSDL represents a significant step forward in computational languages for synthetic biology, providing a sophisticated yet user-friendly tool for designing and simulating complex biological systems with an emphasis on spatiality and cellular dynamics. Its introduction has the potential to transform research and development in synthetic biology, allowing for deeper insights and novel applications in understanding and manipulating multicellular systems.

The success of dental implant placement and prosthetic reconstruction relies on sufficient bone volume at the implant site. Contemporary implantology integrates prosthetic planning with implant placement, emphasizing the importance of pre-established prosthetic goals. Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) techniques have become crucial for bone reconstruction. This study explores the use of custom-made GBR membranes, designed through CAD-CAM technology, in 10 patients with severe bone defects. Patients underwent meticulous preoperative planning, in which digital diagnostic wax-ups and RealGUIDE™ software for implant positioning were used. The custom-made membranes, which were designed based on the individual defects, exhibited successful adaptation. Surgical phases involved membrane placement, bone grafting, and subsequent implant placement. Clinical–radiographic follow-ups demonstrated favorable bone gain outcomes, which enabled prosthetic rehabilitation. Despite membrane exposure occurring in 30% of cases, it did not compromise overall success. The study underscores the potential of custom-made GBR membranes in achieving prosthetic goals, though challenges like exposure and the need for a second surgery require further investigations. The results indicate a promising alternative for predictable bone regeneration in complex cases, shedding light on the prosthetically guided approach for optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Functional rehabilitation in patients with hemimandibulectomy remains a challenge no matter what method of reconstruction is chosen by physicians. In this paper, we aim to evaluate the feasibility of an acceptable occlusal restoration in patients who have undergone hemimanidublectomy without the reestablishment of mandibular continuity. Materials and Methods: Data were collected retrospectively on 10 patients with varying degrees of mandible resection. The greatest challenge in the restoration of an acceptable occlusion form is the natural latero-deviation that occurs in patients whose mandibular continuity was not restored. This causes an unbalanced and uncoordinated occlusal plane. Based on our research, this deviation is highly dependent on three main factors: the presence of teeth (which allow for a proprioceptive stimulus that counteracts the deviation), the extension of the defect and the presence or lack of the coronoid process. Results: Based on the presence of dental elements or lack thereof, patients were either rehabilitated with implant-supported dentures or removable partial dentures. Although the gold standard of care for these patients remains the restoration of mandible continuity through use of bone grafts, an acceptable rehabilitation of occlusion and therefore function may be acquired in non-grafted patients. Conclusions: Both physicians and patients must manage their expectations carefully and be eager to find a compromise to provide the best possible solution given the challenges of the premises.

Our focus is a riveting exploration of the recent and promising hardware-based malware detection approaches. Leveraging hardware performance counters and machine learning prowess, hardware-based malware detection approaches bring forth compelling advantages such as real-time detection, resilience to code variations, minimal performance overhead, protection disablement fortitude, and cost-effectiveness. Navigating through a generic hardware-based detection framework, we meticulously analyze the approach, unraveling the most common methods, algorithms, tools, and datasets that shape its contours. This survey is not only a resource for seasoned experts but also an inviting starting point for those venturing into the field of malware detection. However, challenges emerge in detecting malware based on hardware events. We struggle with the imperative of accuracy improvements and strategies to address the remaining classification errors. The discussion extends to crafting mixed hardware and software approaches for collaborative efficacy, essential enhancements in hardware monitoring units, and a better understanding of the correlation between hardware events and malware applications.

Abstract Spinal anesthesia is considered safe and reliable for most surgical procedures involving the lower part of the body, but its use in the ambulatory setting requires drugs with rapid onset and regression of the motor and sensory block-like prilocaine. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively analyze data from 3291 procedures recorded in our institutional database, to better define the safety profile of spinal prilocaine and the incidence of complications and side effects. All clinical data, prospectively collected from 2011 to 2019 in an Italian tertiary hospital, of patients treated with spinal anesthesia performed with 40 mg of hyperbaric 2% prilocaine, according to our internal protocol of day surgery, were analyzed. Surgical procedures included saphenectomy (28.5%, n = 937), knee arthroscopy (26.8%, n = 882), proctologic surgery (15.16%, n = 499), and inguinal canal surgery (14.9%, n = 491). Anesthesia-related complication was represented by urinary retention (1.09%, n = 36), lipotimia (0.75%, n = 25), and postoperative nausea (0.33%, n = 11); arrhythmic events were uncommon (0.18%, n = 6). One case of persistent hypotension and 2 cases of persistent hypertension were reported. Persistent motor or sensory block (lasting more than 5 h) was experienced by 7 patients. One patient (0.03%), who underwent knee arthroscopy, experienced pelvic pain lasting for 6 h, compatible with a transient neurological symptom. Proctologic surgery was a factor associated with unplanned admission due to anesthesia-related complications (OR = 4.9; 95% CI: 2–14%). The number of complications related to the method was low as well as the need for hospitalization. This drug is valid and safe for the most performed day surgery procedures; however, further trials are needed to investigate the incidence of complications in the days following the procedure.

Bone density at the implant site is correlated to the success of osseointegration. The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the efficacy of osseodensification burs in increasing bone density using a solid polyurethane foam block model. The osseodensification burs kit was used to perform 48 osteotomies on a rigid polyurethane foam test ground. Burs were utilized on a TMM2 implant motor for data collection. The osteotomies were divided into two study groups (A and C) in which implant sites, extended 12 and 14 mm deep, respectively, were prepared using the drills to a compaction rotation; two control groups, B and D, represented the osteotomies for which the drills were used in cutting direction. A 3.8 × 12 mm conical implant was inserted into each site; for each implant, data were collected on the peak torque (Cp), mean torque (Cm), and integral depth curve (I). The implants underwent resonance frequency analysis (RFA) to assess the implant stability quotient (ISQ). Correlation analysis was performed between I, Cm, Cp and ISQ. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to identify statistically significant differences between groups. Group C, representing osteotomies prepared at 14 mm with osseodensification burs, showed a significantly higher value for each parameter. Implants at sites obtained with osteocondensation drills and prepared at greater depth for autologous particle grafting showed significant increases in each implant stability parameter.

The correction of malocclusions with severe skeletal deformity generally requires surgery combined with orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment; partially or totally edentulous patients, and patients with a prosthetic fixed crown, represent treatment restrictions and, therefore, challenges. The purpose of this study is to show a complete multidisciplinary approach and the planning involved (pre-, intra-, and post-operative) for a patient with a class-II or -III dento-skeletal malformation, who presents a total or partial edentulism or a fixed-type rehabilitation and, therefore, requires a combined orthognathic surgical treatment with prosthetic rehabilitation. Orthognathic surgery can be performed on an edentulous or prosthodontic patient to correct discrepancies between the jaws, followed by the placement of implants or a mobile prosthesis to rehabilitate the maxillary bones maxillary Different surgical approaches and technical variations have been proposed; however, the key to the success of such treatments lies in the multidisciplinary nature of the entire diagnostic, programmatic, and therapeutic path, which, therefore, necessitates close collaboration between different specialists—in particular, the maxillofacial surgeon, the orthodontist, and the prosthetist.

Ontogenesis is the development of an organism from its earliest stage to maturity, including homeostasis maintenance throughout adulthood despite environmental perturbations. Almost all cells of a multicellular organism share the same genomic information. Nevertheless, phenotypic diversity and complex supra-cellular architectures emerge at every level, starting from tissues and organs. This is possible thanks to a robust and dynamic interplay of regulative mechanisms.To study ontogenesis, it is necessary to consider different levels of regulation, both genetic and epigenetic. Each cell undergoes a specific path across a landscape of possible regulative states affecting both its structure and its functions during development. This paper proposes using the Nets-Within-Nets formalism, which combines Petri Nets’ simplicity with the capability to represent and simulate the interplay between different layers of regulation connected by non-trivial and context-dependent hierarchical relations.In particular, this work introduces a modeling strategy based on Nets-Within-Nets that can model several critical processes involved in ontogenesis. Moreover, it presents a case study focusing on the first phase of Vulval Precursor Cells specification in C.Elegans. The case study shows that the proposed model can simulate the emergent morphogenetic pattern corresponding to the observed developmental outcome of that phase, in both the physiological case and different mutations. Abstract Background The insertion of dental implants in the atrophic posterior maxilla can be a challenge. One option is to modify the residual native bone in preparation for proper, prosthetically-driven implant placement. The procedure presented in this study is called Navigated Antral Bone Expansion (N.A.B.E). This procedure employs the use of a navigation system to plan and guide the initial pilot drilling, bone expansion, final site preparation, and implant insertion. The aim of this study was to compare the distance between the alveolar ridge and the sinus floor measured before and after the surgery performed using the N.A.B.E. technique. Methods Thirty-seven partially edentulous patients who were candidates for implant supported restoration in the posterior maxilla, with a bone height ranging from 4 to 7 mm were enrolled. The N.A.B.E procedure was used to increase the bone height. Paired-samples t-test evaluated the distance between the alveolar ridge and the sinus floor measured before and after surgery. The occurrence of post-surgical complications, and the angular deviation between the planned osteotomy and the actual placed implant trajectories were evaluated. Results Out of the 37 consecutive patients enrolled in the study, 35 were considered in the data analyses. The purpose of this article is to compare the alginate impression with digital impression using the introral scanner Carestream 3600 and understand which is preferred by patients. 50 young orthodontic patients (25 boys and 25 girls) who had no previous experience of impressions were enrolled in the study. After the impressions the patients were subjected to a questionnaire for both types of impressions. They were asked about feelings of nausea and breathing issues related to whether a digital or alginate impression was taken. As for the feeling of nausea, 24 girls and 22 boys did not have this feeling with digital impressions; as regards breathing, 19 girls and 23 boys did not find respiratory problems with the intra-oral scanner. At the end, patients were asked which method they preferred. About 75% both for girls and boys preferred the intraoral scanner. Therefore, the digital method was found to be the most comfortable for the patients.

Introduction: The number of people with migrant status living in Europe is proliferating. Most of the refugees in Italy come from war zones, and many of them denounce having been victims of persecutory acts in their country of origin. Highly cultured migrant populations have shown better results and oral health behaviour than those who were poorly cultured. The PROTECT project aimed to build a network for the early management of head and neck pathologies among refugees and migrants, promoting the dissemination of correct information about the prevention and treatment of these pathologies. Materials and methods: A national cross-sectional study among the refugees and migrant population in the Lazio region, Italy, from February 2018 to September 2021 was performed. The oral health of 3023 participants was investigated within a network of 56 reception centres and cultural associations. Data collected via an oral health survey questionnaire gathered information on participants’ demographic factors, migration status and dental behaviours and clinical examinations of the participants with the help of mouth mirrors, periodontal probes and artificial light. Results: The mean age was 31.6 ± 13.1, and among all the subjects, 2058 were male (68.1%) and 965 were women (41.9%). Most participants were born in Nigeria, followed by Bangladesh, Pakistan, Somalia, Mali and Senegal. The overall oral pain prevalence was 48.2%. The prevalence of patients claiming poor oral hygiene was 32.4%; 36.2% of the subjects consumed high amounts of sugar; and 26.7% saw their dentist for a check-up in the last year. At the clinical examination, 68.9% of patients had caries experience (considering decay of deciduous teeth, and caries of permanent teeth and teeth with fillings), with 32.2% showing pulpal involvement. Low levels of oral hygiene were also found at the clinical examination, with 46.5% of patients presenting plaque and calculus. The trend of the DMFT index was found to be 5.41. Good periodontal health (CPI = 0) was present in approximately 33.5% of patients. The CPI = 1 index reported bleeding from gingivitis in 37% of patients; tartar was found in 27% of patients (CPI = 2). The percentage of patients with CPI = 3 was 3.6%. Just over half (52.2%) of the migrants examined had malocclusion, and only 0.7% had a malocclusion in treatment. Conclusions: The goal to be achieved is to develop education and prevention programs for head–neck diseases, and perhaps even more. The first step towards this goal can be removing the obstacles migrants encounter in accessing health care.

The highly parallel processing capabilities and reduced power performance of General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) have been crucial factors for their massive use in multiple fields, such as multimedia and high-performance computing applications. Nowadays, more demanding areas, such as automotive, employ GPGPU devices where safety and reliability are mandatory design constraints. Nevertheless, the structural complexity, the transistor density, and the implementation in the latest silicon technologies introduce challenges to match safety and reliability requirements. In these technologies, wear-out and aging are factors that may significantly increase the occurrence of permanent faults during the lifetime operation. Moreover, these faults may generate unacceptable misbehaviors during the execution of an application. These constraints require devising new methods for in-field fault detection, thus verifying the integrity and correct behavior of the device during its whole operational life. This work proposes a technique to generate functional self-test programs targeting the detection of permanent static faults in the memory of the warp scheduler of a GPGPU. The proposed technique can translate fault primitives, which represent the effect of faults in a memory cell, into self-test functions and programs composed of a sequence of operations to excite the fault in the memory and to propagate its effects to a visible location, thus detecting its presence. We focused on the memory in the warp scheduler because it represents a crucial module for the device operation. Furthermore, this memory is present in each Streaming Multiprocessor (SM) of a GPGPU. Some experimental results to validate the method have been gathered, resorting to the NVIDIA Visual Profiler and the Nsight Debugger using the NVIDIA-GEFORCE GTX GPU platform and a structural fault simulator. The CUDA programming environment was used to implement the test procedures.

Abstract Background The Critical Assessment of Functional Annotation (CAFA) is an ongoing, global, community-driven effort to evaluate and improve the computational annotation of protein function. Results Here, we report on the results of the third CAFA challenge, CAFA3, that featured an expanded analysis over the previous CAFA rounds, both in terms of volume of data analyzed and the types of analysis performed. In a novel and major new development, computational predictions and assessment goals drove some of the experimental assays, resulting in new functional annotations for more than 1000 genes. Specifically, we performed experimental whole-genome mutation screening in Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aureginosa genomes, which provided us with genome-wide experimental data for genes associated with biofilm formation and motility. We further performed targeted assays on selected genes in Drosophila melanogaster, which we suspected of being involved in long-term memory. Conclusion We conclude that while predictions of the molecular function and biological process annotations have slightly improved over time, those of the cellular component have not. Term-centric prediction of experimental annotations remains equally challenging; although the performance of the top methods is significantly better than the expectations set by baseline methods in C. albicans and D. melanogaster, it leaves considerable room and need for improvement. Finally, we report that the CAFA community now involves a broad range of participants with expertise in bioinformatics, biological experimentation, biocuration, and bio-ontologies, working together to improve functional annotation, computational function prediction, and our ability to manage big data in the era of large experimental screens.

(1) Background: Patients with head and neck cancer are treated by ablative surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these. The side effects of cancer therapies can compromise conventional prosthesis rehabilitation; therefore, dental implants can result in a more effective solution. The aim of the study is to explain how to rehabilitate a patient that underwent head and neck cancer therapy. (2) Methods: This retrospective study conducted from 2015 to 2021 included 223 postoncological patients, aged between 32 and 80 years old. Eighteen patients did not proceed with any treatment, and two died. Therefore, 203 patients have been analyzed and rehabilitated following our decisional protocol, with a mean period of follow-up of 4 years. The implant placement was considered successful when a mean bone loss of 1.6 mm for the first year and a mean of 0.13 mm in subsequent years occurred (3) Results: A total of 161 patients were rehabilitated with a conventional prosthesis, 42 patients (F:M ratio 19:23) with an implant-supported prosthesis and a total of 200 implants were placed; 9 implants were lost (4.5% of 200 implants). Conclusions: The results confirmed that by following our protocol it is possible to obtain an acceptable rate of implant survival, considering the delicacy and complexity of post-oncological patients.

Background: In the last two years, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has determined radical changes in human behaviors and lifestyles, with a drastic reduction in socialization due to physical distancing and self-isolation. These changes have also been reflected in the epidemiological patterns of common respiratory viruses. For this reason, early discrimination of respiratory viruses is important as new variants emerge. Methods: Nasopharyngeal swabs of 2554 patients, with clinically suspected Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) from October 2019 to November 2021, were collected to detect 1 or more of the 23 common respiratory pathogens, especially viruses, via BioFilmArray RP2.1plus, including SARS-CoV-2. Demographical characteristics and epidemiological analyses were performed as well as a laboratory features profile of positive patients. Results: An observational study on 2300 patients (254 patients were excluded because of missing data) including 1560 men and 760 women, median age of 64.5 years, was carried out. Considering the respiratory virus research request, most of the patients were admitted to the Emergency Medicine Department (41.2%, of patients), whereas 29.5% were admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department. The most frequently detected pathogens included SARS-CoV-2 (31.06%, 707/2300, from March 2020 to November 2021), InfA-B (1.86%, 43/2300), HCoV (2.17% 50/2300), and HSRV (1.65%, 38/2300). Interestingly, coinfection rates decreased dramatically in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic period. The significative decrease in positive rate of SARS-CoV-2 was associated with the massive vaccination. Conclusion: This study represents a dynamic picture of the epidemiological curve of common respiratory viruses during the two years of pandemic, with a disregarded trend for additional viruses. Our results showed that SARS-CoV-2 had a preferential tropism for the respiratory tract without co-existing with other viruses. The possible causes were attributable either to the use of masks, social isolation, or to specific respiratory receptors mostly available for this virus, external and internal lifestyle factors, vaccination campaigns, and emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Epigenetic changes, including miRNAs deregulation, have been suggested to play a significant role in development of obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) in transplanted lungs. Many studies have tried to identify ideal candidate miRNAs and the downstream pathways implicated in the bronchiolar fibro-obliterative process. Several candidate miRNAs, previously indicated as possibly being associated with OB, were analyzed by combining the quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH) of lung tissues of OB affected patients. Disease and OB-lesion-specific expression of miR-21-5p was confirmed and by computational analysis we were able to identify the network of genes most probably associated miR-21-5p in the context of OB fibrogenesis. Among all potentially associated genes, STAT3 had a very high probability score. Immunohistochemistry showed that STAT3/miR-21-5p were co-over expressed in OB lesions, thus, suggesting miR-21-5p could regulate STAT3 expression. However, miR-21-5p inhibition in cultures of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) derived myofibroblasts did not significantly affect STAT3 mRNA and protein expression levels. This study demonstrates the specificity of miR-21-5p over-expression in OB lesions and contributes to existing knowledge on the miR-21-5p downstream pathway. Activation of STAT3 is associated with miR-21-5p upregulation, however, STAT-3 network activation is most likely complex and miR-21-5p is not the sole regulator of STAT3.

The aim of the study is to observe retrospectively the correlation between Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and risk factors; including tobacco, alcohol and Family History of Cancer (FHC). A total of 478 patients were included retrospectively from the database of the Department of Oral Sciences and Maxillofacial Surgery, Sapienza University of Rome. A Test Group (TG) consisted of 239 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of OSCC. A Control Group (CG) consisted of 239 patients without history and/or diagnosis of oral cancer. The logistic regression models were used to calculate the adjusted Odd Ratios (ORs) associated with alcohol, tobacco and FHC; including the General Family History of Cancer (GFHC) and Family History of Head and Neck Cancer (FHHNC) and their 95% Confidence Intervals (CI). The high rate of tobacco consumption was associated with an OR of 1.035 (95% CI 1.001–1.070) and a statistical significance (p = 0.041). Drinker patients showed a significant risk of developing OSCC (p = 0.05) and the OR was 1.035 (95% CI 1.010–1.061). The GFHC was associated with a marginal risk of OSCC with an OR of 1.095 (95% CI 0.953–1.259), without significance (p = 0.199). The FHHNC showed a notable risk increase with an OR of 1.871 (95% CI 0.902–3.882), without significance (p = 0.092). Alcohol and tobacco may be associated with an increase in the risk of OSCC.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have significantly higher prevalence and caries severity compared to the average population. Knowledge about the oral health indices of children with this mental disorder is key to designing efficient plans of intervention. This paper reports the results of a study on the oral health status of children with ASD in central Italy. This is the first study of this type in Italy. The sample consists of 229 autistic children aged between 5 and 14 years, attending the Unit of Special Needs Policlinico Umberto I in Rome. Each patient received an intraoral examination to investigate decayed, missing, and filled teeth as well as periodontal status. Information on demographic attributes, dietary habits, medical history, and child’s cooperativeness at the first visit was also recorded. Of the participants, 79.26% presented signs of gingivitis and about 90% of them had plaque. Caries prevalence was 66.38%. The average of the total number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth in the permanent and primary dentition was 2.91. Among the factors considered, only dietary habits and the periodontal indices showed statistically significant association with caries prevalence and caries severity. Despite the selection bias, that prevents us to interpret the results presented as epidemiological evidence, our study suggests that children with ASD in central Italy represent a population at risk.

Objectives: The present paper reports data of a randomized study aimed to analyse and compare the histologic and histomorphometric aspects of bone healing in extraction sites covered with collagen membrane alone or associated with porcine-derived bone graft. Material and Methods: Thirty patients, with single extraction sockets without severe bone wall defects in the premolar/molar region, were included. Ten extraction sockets were grafted with porcine-derived bone and covered with collagen membrane (group 1), 10 sites were covered with collagen membrane alone (group 2), and 10 sites healed spontaneously (group 3). After 4 months of healing, 26 (8 in group 1, 9 in group 2, and 9 in group 3) bone core specimens were harvested for histologic evaluation, then dental implants were placed. Results: Sites in the group 1 and in the group 2 showed similar histologic and histomorphometric results without significantly differences in the percentage of vital bone (57.43% [SD 4.8] vs. 60.01% [SD 3.2]), and non-mineralized connective tissue 22.99% (SD 5.3) vs. 18.53% (SD 6.2). In group 1 a 16.57% (SD 3.8) of residual material was found. Conclusions: Results showed that the use of collagen membrane alone or associated to porcine-derived bone improves the healing bone process compared to that of extraction sites spontaneously healed. Moreover, histomorphometric data related to bone quality, indicated that extraction sites without severe walls defects and with a vestibular bone thickness > 1.5 mm, treated with a low resorbtion rate collagen membrane alone, do not need more than 4 months for dental implant insertion.

Objectives: The aim of present randomized controlled clinical trial was to clinically evaluate hard tissue changes after extraction socket preservation procedures compared to natural spontaneous healing. Material and Methods: Thirty patients were enrolled in the present study and underwent single-tooth extraction in the premolar/molar areas. Ten sites were grafted with porcine-derived bone covered by collagen membrane, 10 covered by porcine-derived collagen membrane alone, and 10 underwent natural spontaneous healing. Vertical and horizontal bone changes after 3-month were evaluated at implant placement. Results: The vertical and horizontal bone changes at the extraction sockets treated with collagen membrane alone (vertical: -0.55 [SD 0.11] mm, and horizontal: -1.21 [SD 0.69] mm) and collagen membrane plus porcine-derived bone (vertical: -0.37 [SD 0.7] mm, and horizontal: -0.91 [SD 0.53] mm) were found significantly lower (P < 0.001), when compared to non-grafted sockets (vertical: -2.09 [SD 0.19] mm, and horizontal: -3.96 [SD 0.87] mm). In type 1 extraction sockets, in premolar sites, and in presence of vestibular bone thicknesses ≥ 1.5 mm, the use of collagen membrane alone revealed similar outcomes to those with additional graft material. Conclusions: At the re-entry surgery, extraction sockets grafted with porcine-derived bone and covered by collagen membrane, and extraction sockets covered by porcine-derived collagen membrane alone, showed significantly lower vertical and horizontal bone changes, compared to extraction sockets sites underwent natural spontaneous healing. However, a complete prevention of remodelling is not achievable, irrespective of the technique used.

Background: Surgical procedures for tumors of the paranasal sinus, palatal epithelium, minor salivary glands or osteosarcoma of the upper jaw require a partial or total maxillectomy of the upper jaw. When the surgical procedure and/or radiation therapy result in a communication, the solution is necessarily prosthetical, through a palatal obturator that recreates a partition between the oral and nasal cavities. Methods: Authors selected 32 post-oncological patients with the upper maxilla completely edentulous prosthetically rehabilitated with a palatal obturator. Results: No serious complications or adverse reactions were reported during the fabrication of surgical or definitive obturators. All patients stated to benefit the palatal obturator in terms of quality of life. Conclusion: Prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous maxillectomy with oral communication is a demanding challenge for the prosthodontist. The goals of prosthetic rehabilitation include separation of oral and nasal cavities to allow adequate deglutition and articulation of teeth, restore midfacial soft tissue contour and a satisfactory esthetic outcome. When, for any reason, the patient is not a suitable candidate for an implant-retained overdenture, a total removable prosthesis should ensure the most comfort in terms of swallowing, phonation and aesthetics.

The characterization of the interacting behaviors of complex biological systems is a primary objective in protein–protein network analysis and computational biology. In this paper we present FunMod, an innovative Cytoscape version 2.8 plugin that is able to mine undirected protein–protein networks and to infer sub-networks of interacting proteins intimately correlated with relevant biological pathways. This plugin may enable the discovery of new pathways involved in diseases. In order to describe the role of each protein within the relevant biological pathways, FunMod computes and scores three topological features of the identified sub-networks. By integrating the results from biological pathway clustering and topological network analysis, FunMod proved to be useful for the data interpretation and the generation of new hypotheses in two case studies.

Displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is not an uncommon event in implant dentistry and may lead to serious complications, such as sinusitis. To avoid systemic problems, performing the removal of the foreign body as soon as possible is suggested. Despite the fact that early implants dislocation has been reported several times, late migration into maxillary sinus has been described by just a few studies. The purpose of this study was to report a rare case of dental implant migration into maxillary sinus after 12 years of function. A 61-year-old woman came to our attention in June 2015 after being visited by an otolaryngologist and being diagnosed with sinusitis and presence of a foreign body into the right maxillary sinus. A panoramic radiograph and a CT scan showed the migration of dental implant sited in 1.6 positions into the maxillary sinus. The implant was removed following a Caldwell-Luc procedure under local anesthesia. Postoperative course was uncomplicated and the patient reported no symptoms of sinusitis after 12 months of follow-up.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and histologic results when a highly purified xenogenic bone (Laddec®) was used as grafting material in maxillary sinuses. Material and Methods: In fifteen patients requiring unilateral maxillary sinus augmentation, the grafting procedure was performed with Laddec®. Forty-two implants were installed after a 6 month healing period. The height of the augmented sinus was measured radiographically immediately after augmentation and postoperatively up to 36 months. At the time of implant placement, a bone core was harvested in each patient for histological examination. Results: The cumulative implant survival rate was 97.6%. The original height was 3.65 (SD 0.7) mm and the augmented sinus height was 13.8 (SD 1.4) mm after the surgery. The reduced height of grafted xenogenic material (RDL) at the implant insertion was 0.83 (SD 0.38) mm, and at the final postoperative visit was 0.91 (SD 0.25) mm, showing no significant correlation with the follow-up periods by Spearman’s test (P = 0.118). In addition, no significant difference in the RDL was observed according to the site of implantation (P = 0.682). The mean implant marginal bone loss was 0.38 (SD 0.24) mm. Histological analysis showed the bone cores were composed of 64.72 (SD 3.44)% newly formed bone, 17.41 (SD 2.02)% connective tissue, 16.93 (SD 2.83)% residual graft particles, and 0.94 (SD 0.11)% inflammatory cells. Conclusions: According to our data, the highly purified xenogenic bone (Laddec®), used as graft material in the sinus lift procedure, may create adequate bone volume, and appropriate osseointegration of dental implants.

The pathogenesis of Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome (BOS), the main clinical phenotype of chronic lung allograft dysfunction, is poorly understood. Recent studies suggest that epigenetic regulation of microRNAs might play a role in its development. In this paper we present the application of a complex computational pipeline to perform enrichment analysis of miRNAs in pathways applied to the study of BOS. The analysis considered the full set of miRNAs annotated in miRBase (version 21), and applied a sequence of filtering approaches and statistical analyses to reduce this set and to score the candidate miRNAs according to their potential involvement in BOS development. Dysregulation of two of the selected candidate miRNAs-miR-34a and miR-21 -was clearly shown in in-situ hybridization (ISH) on five explanted human BOS lungs and on a rat model of acute and chronic lung rejection, thus definitely identifying miR-34a and miR-21 as pathogenic factors in BOS and confirming the effectiveness of the computational pipeline.

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in crops. Inorganic Fe-compounds and synthetic Fe-chelates are commonly used to control chlorosis but their use arise environmental concerns. We recently developed a new iron fertilizer using a β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponge complex (Fe-NS). In this study, a pilot trial was performed on hydroponically cultivated horticultural plants in order to evaluate the effect of Fe-NS. Sweet corn and tomato were used as model plants analyzing chlorophyll, dry matter and Fe content. Fe-NS effect was compared to FeSO4 and Fe-DTPA. Fe-NS had a positive effect on re-greening and growth in sweet corn and tomato plants.

One of the biggest challenges in the study of biological regulatory mechanisms is the integration, americanmodeling, and analysis of the complex interactions which take place in biological networks. Despite post transcriptional regulatory elements (i.e., miRNAs) are widely investigated in current research, their usage and visualization in biological networks is very limited. Regulatory networks are commonly limited to gene entities. To integrate networks with post transcriptional regulatory data, researchers are therefore forced to manually resort to specific third party databases. In this context, we introduce ReNE, a Cytoscape 3.x plugin designed to automatically enrich a standard gene-based regulatory network with more detailed transcriptional, post transcriptional, and translational data, resulting in an enhanced network that more precisely models the actual biological regulatory mechanisms. ReNE can automatically import a network layout from the Reactome or KEGG repositories, or work with custom pathways described using a standard OWL/XML data format that the Cytoscape import procedure accepts. Moreover, ReNE allows researchers to merge multiple pathways coming from different sources. The merged network structure is normalized to guarantee a consistent and uniform description of the network nodes and edges and to enrich all integrated data with additional annotations retrieved from genome-wide databases like NCBI, thus producing a pathway fully manageable through the Cytoscape environment. The normalized network is then analyzed to include missing transcription factors, miRNAs, and proteins. The resulting enhanced network is still a fully functional Cytoscape network where each regulatory element (transcription factor, miRNA, gene, protein) and regulatory mechanism (up-regulation/down-regulation) is clearly visually identifiable, thus enabling a better visual understanding of its role and the effect in the network behavior. The enhanced network produced by ReNE is exportable in multiple formats for further analysis via third party applications. ReNE can be freely installed from the Cytoscape App Store (http://apps.cytoscape.org/apps/rene) and the full source code is freely available for download through a SVN repository accessible at http://www.sysbio.polito.it/tools_svn/BioInformatics/Rene/releases/. ReNE enhances a network by only integrating data from public repositories, without any inference or prediction. The reliability of the introduced interactions only depends on the reliability of the source data, which is out of control of ReNe developers.
