This work aims to evaluate a set of Critical Success Factors (CSF) that are important for port operations optimization. Furthermore, a set of 5G enabled applications is evaluated based on their importance for two typologies of companies located in the port of Hamburg, Athens and Luka Koper. More specifically, the importance of CSFs and 5G enabled applications and services is assessed based on the point of views of respondents working for technological companies and companies involved in the port’s operations, using Multi Criteria Analysis. Finally, the relationship between the CSFs and 5G applications and services is considered based on the χ2 test of hypothesis. Then, the possibility to promote 5G applications and services as CSF for port operations optimization which will in turn increase port competitiveness, is discussed. more...

The Blockchain technology can be defined as a distributed ledger database for recording transactions between parties verifiably and permanently. Blockchain emerged as a leading technology layer for financial applications. Nevertheless, in the past years, the attention of researchers and practitioners moved to the application of the Blockchain technologies to other domains. Recently, it represents the backbone of a new digital supply chain. Thanks to its capability of ensuring data immutability and public accessibility of data streams, Blockchain can increase the efficiency, reliability, and transparency of the overall supply chain, and optimize the inbound processes. The literature concerning Blockchain in non-financial applications mainly focused on the technological part and the Business Process Modeling, lacking in terms of standard methodology for designing a strategy to develop and validate the overall Blockchain solution and integrate it in the Business Strategy. Thus, this paper aims to overcome this lack. First, we integrate the current literature filling the lack concerning the digital strategy, creating a standard methodology to design Blockchain technology use cases, which are not related to finance applications. Second, we present the results of a use case in the fresh food delivery, showing the critical aspects of implementing a Blockchain solution. Synchro-modal supply chain eco-NET (SYNCHRO-NET) is a Horizon 2020 European research project aimed at overcoming the stress due to the increasing transportation distances, the higher complexity, and the vulnerability of international supply chains. In order to foster sustainability, quality, and reliability of such supply chains, SYNCHRO-NET mainly exploits the impact and the possible benefits coming from slow/smart-steaming and synchro-modality transportation strategies, and the related business models. The aim of this paper is to summarize and disseminate the main developments and scientific contributions coming from the project. In particular, the working core of the SYNCHRO-NET solution is an integrated and cloud-based eco-system of optimization and simulation software modules that supports stakeholders&rsquo, decisions in freight transportation and logistics management at strategic, operational, and real-time levels. The platform has achieved a high grade of automation in several processes to overcome all the issues related to human-based operations. The efficiency and effectiveness of the overall platform have been tested on three case studies considering pan-European and regional trade lanes, as well as commercial activities between the Far East and European ports. The project results and outputs also allow us to analyze barriers and opportunities of the approach, industrial and academic developments, and relations with emerging technologies. more...

The logistics sector faces substantial challenges in meeting customer demands for higher service quality, speed and flexibility under conditions of continued growth in world trade and worldwide transportation movements, increasing distances and vulnerabilities of the supply chain. Additional challenges relate to the economic and environmental sustainability of logistics operations. While a lot of attention was devoted in the past decades to the operational and technical aspects, the business development phase has been put aside, causing the market failure of several projects. The paper presents the SYNCHRO-modal supply chain eco-NET (SYNCHRO-NET) project, which will demonstrate the effectiveness of slow steaming combined with synchro-modality in reducing the cost and the emissions of international supply chains and improving reliability and sustainability through the optimization of the planning process. Differently from other similar projects, SYNCHRO-NET combines operational aspects with a business perspective and represents a stakeholder-driven approach aimed at developing a close-to-market solution over the timeframe of the project. more...

In recent years, the trend to mix in the same airports legacy and low-cost companies is heavily affecting the airport operations, stressing the security checks in particular. In fact, low-cost companies force the airports to add additional and strict rules for the hand baggage allowance, with additional checks in the security gates, introducing delays for all the passengers, including the legacy ones. Moreover, recent changes to the rules for hand luggage allowance introduced by legacy airlines are forcing the airport operations management to think of new strategies to automate the entire security check process. One of the most advanced systems presently available to speed up the security operations is Logiscan, developed by Datalogic e Logital in collaboration with the “Aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna S.p.A.”, the company managing the Bologna Airport. The system automates the operations of size and weight measures and allowance checks and, in conjunction with a redesign of the queuing system, aims to improve the overall system efficiency in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In order to check the new overall system, the entire process has been modeled and analyzed by means of AirSIM, a simulation tool for airport operations based on the well-known OMNeT++ Discrete Event Simulator. AirSIM is an object-oriented simulator able to describe the behavior of different passenger types, as well as to incorporate the logic of different flow management policies. Il saggio tenta di mettere in luce i legami profondi e meno evidenti che sembrano intercorrere tra la storia generale del Risorgimento italiano (che fece di Genova, grazie anche a protagonisti quali Nino Bixio, Goffredo Mameli e Giuseppe Mazzini, una delle "patrie ideali") e alcune delle molte tracce fisiche che essa ha lasciato nel tessuto costruito della cittŕ. L'Autore propone la rilettura di alcuni episodi di trasformazione e formazione della cittŕ negli anni delle vicende risorgimentali con riferimento al momento in cui queste conobbero una prima conclusione in coincidenza con la proclamazione del regno d'Italia: il caso di via Garibaldi, ad esempio, che fu aperta demolendo chirurgicamente parte dei circostanti quartieri medievali, per collegare al nuovo centro della cittŕ, organizzato intorno a piazza De Ferrari, la cinquecentesca via Aurea, sede dell'antica classe oligarchica, attraverso piazza Fontane Marose. Oppure con la costituzione di ambiti celebrativi, come nel caso emblematico del nuovo snodo urbano di piazza Corvetto con le statue raffiguranti Giuseppe Mazzini e Vittorio Emanuele II. La rilettura di alcuni episodi noti e ormai oggetto di numerose analisi, anche recenti, si estende poi agli anni e decenni successivi a quella data (almeno fino ai primi anni del Novecento) che ebbe certo un forte impatto simbolico ma non altrettanto evidenti e immediate ricadute sulla vita e sulla struttura della cittŕ. Complex formation between N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (penten) and the metal ions Mn(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), Ag(I), Pb(II) and Tl(III) (in 1.00 M NaNO3 and 25 degrees of Celsius) was investigated by potentiometry and spectrophotometry. These are the first reported values of the stability constants for this ligand with Ag(I), Pb(II) and Tl(III). The X-ray crystal structure of [Tl(NO3}(penten}](NO3)2 was determined. In this structure, Tl(III) shows a coordination number of seven made up of the six N-donors and one O-atom of NO3-. more...

The equilibria involving thallium(III)triethylenetetraminhexaacetate [Tl(ttha)]3- were studied.Its stability constant was estimated using UV-VIS spectroscopy for the ligand exchange occuring between bromide and and ttha in the pH range from 0 to 10. The protonated complex [Tl(H3ttha)] is a weak acid allowing the determination of the stability constant of heterobinuclear complexes [MTl(ttha)]- (M=Co, Ni,Cu,Zn, Cd,Pb) by use of alkalimetric titrations of the above acid in presence of different metal ions. In the case of copper the stability constant was also measured spectrophotometrically. The complex formation in solution was verified in two cases by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry. One of the most pressing concerns for our twenty first century society is the challenge of the huge stock of existing buildings that have outlived the function for which they were built. Their worth is well recognised, and the importance of retaining them has been long debated, but if they are to be saved, what is to be done with these redundant buildings? Whether these are edifice of character and worth, or ordinary straightforward structures that have simply outlived their purpose; demolition and rebuild is no longer seen as the obvious solution to the continuous use of the specific site. It is now a commonplace architectural approach to re-use, adapt and add-to, rather than the building being razed and a new structure erected in its place. This does present the problem of what to do with these buildings, too often it seems that the only possible solution is another gallery, however, a society can only support so many museums. more...

Il saggio fa parte del V volume della "Storia del lavoro in Italia", a cura di Stefano Musso. Analizza il lavoro artigiano in Italia dall'unificazione nazionale al fascismo. Si basa su ricerche originali e su una analisi della letteratura scientifica disponibile. Affronta in primo luogo l'analisi dei caratteri, diffusione, ed evoluzione del lavoro artigiano lungo il periodo considerato. Individua tre fasi; la prima dalle origini all'età giolittiana, la seconda fra grande guerra e avvento del fascismo, la terza nel periodo del regime fascista. Affronta insieme gli aspetti quantitativi del fenomeno, il rapporto con l'evoluzione tecnologica e con la grande industria a livello economico, le implicazioni politiche, ma anche le culture del lavoro e le rappresentazioni del lavoro artigiano. more...

Il saggio descrive e analizza l’evoluzione della legislazione sociale Welfare in Italia dall’avvento del sistema democratico fino alla svolta degli anni Settanta. L’analisi si sviluppa su due livelli. In primo luogo i cambiamenti delle culture giuridiche e delle culture economiche. In secondo luogo, le interazioni tra le trasformazioni sociali e i processi di decisione politica. La ricostruzione, oltra ad attingere alle categorie analitiche offerte della storia del diritto e dalla politologia, è basata su numerose fonti d’archivio, quali quello del Ministero dell’Interno, della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, della Fondazione Nenni, dell’Istituto Gramsci. more...
