Introduction: Patients with triple-negative (TN) or HER2-enriched ipsilateral breast cancer recurrence (IBCR) seem to be excluded from a second breast-conserving surgery (BCS) under the assumption that salvage mastectomy would provide better oncological outcomes. Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the clinical features of these patients, to compare the two surgical alternatives (salvage mastectomy versus second BCS) in terms of oncological results, and to identify independent factors influencing prognosis and surgical treatment. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all the consecutive patients with histologically confirmed TN or HER2-enriched IBCR. Disease-free survival (DFS), distant disease-free survival (DDFS), overall survival (OS), and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) were analyzed and compared between the two groups. Results: Eighty-five patients were affected by TN or HER2-enriched IBCR, with a median age of 60 years (range, 32-87 years). The majority of patients (72.9%) were treated with salvage mastectomy. There was no significant difference in terms of DFS between patients receiving a second BCS or mastectomy (p=0.596). However, patients undergoing a second BCS had significantly better DDFS, OS, and BCSS compared to mastectomy (p=0.009; p=0.002; p=0.001, respectively). Tumor dimension < 16 mm (78.3% versus 38.7%, hazard ratio (HR)=3.602, 95% confidence interval (95% CI)=1.534-8.459, p=0.003) was found to significantly increase the probability of receiving a second BCS and positively affects recurrence and survival outcomes (DFS: HR=8.065, 95% CI=2.320-28.034, p=0.001; DDFS: HR=17.011, 95% CI=3.853-75.099, p=0.001; OS: HR: 13.881, 95% CI=2.730-70.579, p=0.002; BCSS: HR=36.773, 95% CI=4.579-295.322, p=0.001). Second BCS represents an independent protective factor for OS and BCSS (OS: HR=0.246, 95% CI=0.027-0.697, p=0.002; BCSS: HR=0.313, 95% CI=0.092-0.511, p=0.002). Conclusion: Salvage mastectomy is not always necessary and it does not seem to increase survival compared to a second BCS. This reinforces the concept that the prognosis of TN and HER2-enriched BC recurrence is mainly driven by the biology of the disease, rather than by the extent of surgery. In patients with small (< 16 mm) aggressive subtypes of IBCR, a second conservative approach can still be evaluated and offered, presenting acceptable loco-regional control and survival. This paper investigates how the pricing policy of a revenue-maximizing monopolist is influenced by the social learning dynamics of customers who use online reviews to estimate the quality of the product. A salient feature of our problem is that the customers’ willingness to pay, and hence the demand function, evolves over time in conjunction with the online reviews. The monopolist strives to maximize its total expected revenue over a finite horizon by adjusting prices in response to these dynamics. The revenue maximization problem is studied using two different review models: a quality-based review model, where customers report their experienced quality, and a value-based review model, where reviews internalize experienced quality as well as the purchase price. To formulate the problem in tractable form, we derive a fluid model that provides a good approximation of the system dynamics when the volume of sales is large. This formulation lends itself to key structural insights into the interactions between optimal pricing policies and review dynamics. In particular, we identify critical time scales and social learning regimes that sharply separate the efficacy of dynamic pricing vis-à-vis fixed-price strategies. Furthermore, we demonstrate the impact of the quality-based and value-based review models on key structural properties of the optimal pricing policies. These structural insights are also elucidated in an illustrative simulation study based on data from an online marketplace. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by several species of Aspergillus and Penicillium and commonly detected in a wide range of foodstuffs. The purpose of this work was to monitor the presence of OTA in cheeses and pork meat products. We read with great interest the article titled "Tuberous breast, deformities, and asymmetries: a retrospective analysis comparing fat grafting versus mastopexy and breast implants" by Gentile. In this interesting paper, the author compares results obtained in patients suffering from tuberous breast, deformities, and asymmetries treated with fat grafting (FG) with those of patients who underwent mastopexy and breast implant (M-SI). The TB reconstructive procedures aims to release the constricted base both vertically and horizontally, restore the correct nipple-inframammary fold distance, avoid the double bubble, correct ptosis and hypertrophy, and restore both volume and asymmetry. In most cases, it poses a real challenge to surgical correction through the exclusive use of only one of the surgical techniques described in the paper. We think the type of surgical procedure is determined by specific factors which must be considered by both the surgeon and the patient. We propose a classification that analyzes 3 characteristics (type of stenosis, hypoplasia, and ptosis) and identifies 8 classes of TB: this classification allows to guide the surgeon in choosing the most appropriate surgical maneuvers for each type of TB. In conclusion, we think that each case of TB, deformities, and asymmetries should be carefully studied and classified, opting for the most appropriate surgical method "tailored made" to ensure the best result for the patient. Optimal Policies for Online Platforms When Social Learning Occurs Before buying products online, consumers read the reviews written by the previous customers. If they buy the product, they write a review themselves. When the product is of unknown quality, consumers learn it over time; that is, social learning occurs. If consumers have various purchase options of similar products of different brands, the platform that they use may affect this social learning by choosing the order in which the products appear on its website. In “Product Ranking in the Presence of Social Learning,” Maglaras, Scarsini, Shin, and Vaccari compare various policies that the platform may adopt, with the goal of maximizing its revenue collected from commission fees for sold items. The criterion to compare the policies is the worst-case regret with respect to a fully informed platform benchmark.

Motivated by the problem of utility allocation in a portfolio under a Markowitz mean-variance choice paradigm, we propose an allocation criterion for the variance of the sum of $n$ possibly dependent random variables. This criterion, the Shapley value, requires to translate the problem into a cooperative game. The Shapley value has nice properties, but, in general, is computationally demanding. The main result of this paper shows that in our particular case the Shapley value has a very simple form that can be easily computed. The same criterion is used also to allocate the standard deviation of the sum of $n$ random variables and a conjecture about the relation of the values in the two games is formulated., 20pages

Two products of unknown qualities are simultaneously launched by two different firms in the market. An infinite population of consumers with heterogeneous preferences sequentially decide whether to purchase one of the two products or not to buy at all. Arriving consumers estimate the qualities of products based on the distribution of binary online reviews reported by prior consumers and decide accordingly, obeying a non-Bayesian rule. The goal of our work is to describe how the online review mechanism drives the spread of information in a competitive market and to provide conditions under which consumers' quality estimates converge almost surely to the true qualities of products.

In intelligent transportation systems (ITS's) vehicle tracking is necessary to permit high-level analysis, such as vehicle counting or classification. Nowadays, the need for a precise vehicle behavior analysis is growing mainly in urban intersections. Typical urban traffic scenes contain high-cluttered areas where static and dynamic occlusions take place and objects are missed. Tracking systems relying on monocular cameras are widespread. However, often they are misled by the complicated object interactions occurring in those areas, thus yielding errors in the higher level modules. The real-time tracking system we have conceived relies on an algorithm exploiting local and global information from corner points and whole object's features that allows us to keep track of many different objects in challenging urban scenarios. We assess our results through extensive on-field testing by manually extracting the ground truth from different sequences taken by real world traffic monitoring systems.

In Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS’s), the process of vehicle tracking is often needed to permit higher-level analysis. However, during occlusions features could “jump” from an object to another one, thus resulting in tracking errors. Our method exploits second order statistics to assess the correct membership of features to respective objects, thus reducing false alarms due to splitting. As a consequence, object’s properties like area and centroid can be extracted stemming from feature points with a higher precision. We firstly validated our method on toy sequences built ad hoc to produce strong occlusions artificially and subsequently on sequences taken from a traffic monitoring system. The experimental results we present prove the effectiveness of our approach even in the presence of strong occlusions. At present, the algorithm is working in the daytime in the Traffic Monitoring System of the city where we have been living.
