We present a new method to determine the star formation rate (SFR) density of the Universe at $z \gtrsim 5$ that includes the contribution of dust-obscured star formation. For this purpose, we use a [CII] (158 $\mu$m) selected sample of galaxies serendipitously identified in the fields of known $z\gtrsim 4.5$ objects to characterize the fraction of obscured SFR. The advantage of a [CII] selection is that our sample is SFR-selected, in contrast to a UV-selection that would be biased towards unobscured star formation. We obtain a sample of 23 [CII] emitters near star-forming (SF) galaxies and QSOs -- three of which we identify for the first time -- using previous literature and archival ALMA data. 18 of these serendipitously identified galaxies have sufficiently deep rest-UV data and are used to characterize the obscured fraction of the star formation in galaxies with SFRs $\gtrsim 30\ \text{M}_{\odot} \ \text{yr}^{-1}$. We find that [CII] emitters identified around SF galaxies have $\approx$63\% of their SFR obscured, while [CII] emitters around QSOs have $\approx$93\% of their SFR obscured. By forward modeling existing wide-area UV luminosity function (LF) determinations, we derive the intrinsic UV LF using our characterization of the obscured SFR. Integrating the intrinsic LF to $M_{UV}$ = $-$20 we find that the obscured SFRD contributes to $>3\%$ and $>10\%$ of the total SFRD at $z \sim 5$ and $z \sim 6$ based on our sample of companions galaxies near SFGs and QSOs, respectively. We present the census of H$\beta$+[OIII] 4960,5008 \AA emitters at 6.87$ galaxies. We report a rapid decline of the [OIII] luminosity density at $z\gtrsim 6-7$ which cannot be explained by the evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate density. Finally we find that FRESCO detects in only 2h galaxies likely accounting for $\sim 10-20\%$ of the ionising budget at $z=7-8$ (assuming an escape fraction of 10%), raising the prospect of directly detecting a significant fraction of the sources of reionisation with JWST., Comment: 20 pages + appendices. The advent of the JWST has revolutionised our understanding of high-redshift galaxies. In particular, the NIRCam instrument on-board JWST has revealed a population of Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-dark galaxies that had previously evaded optical detection, potentially due to significant dust obscuration, quiescence, or simply extreme redshift. Here, we present the first NIRSpec spectra of 23 HST-dark galaxies ($\mathrm{H-F444W>1.75}$), unveiling their nature and physical properties. This sample includes both dusty and quiescent galaxies with spectroscopic data from NIRSpec/PRISM, providing accurate spectroscopic redshifts with $\mathrm{\overline{z}_{spec} = 4.1 \pm 0.7}$. The spectral features demonstrate that, while the majority of HST-dark galaxies are dusty, a substantial fraction, $\mathrm{13^{+9}_{-6} \%}$, are quiescent. For the dusty galaxies, we have quantified the dust attenuation using the Balmer decrement ($\mathrm{H\alpha / H\beta}$), finding attenuations $\mathrm{A_{V} > 2\ mag}$. We find that HST-dark dusty galaxies are $\mathrm{H\alpha}$ emitters with equivalent widths spanning the range $\mathrm{ 68 A < EW_{H\alpha} < 550 A }$, indicative of a wide range of recent star-formation activity. Whether dusty or quiescent, we find that HST-dark galaxies are predominantly massive, with 85\% of the galaxies in the sample having masses $\mathrm{log(M_{*}/M_{\odot}) > 9.8}$. This pilot NIRSpec program reveals the diverse nature of HST-dark galaxies and highlights the effectiveness of NIRSpec/PRISM spectroscopic follow-up in distinguishing between dusty and quiescent galaxies and properly quantifying their physical properties. Upcoming research utilising higher-resolution NIRSpec data and combining JWST with ALMA observations will enhance our understanding of these enigmatic and challenging sources., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

With the advent of JWST, we can probe the rest-frame optical emission of galaxies at $z>3$ with high sensitivity and spatial resolution, making it possible to accurately characterise red, optically-faint galaxies and thus move towards a more complete census of the galaxy population at high redshifts. To this end, we present a sample of 148 massive, dusty galaxies from the JWST/CEERS survey, colour-selected using solely JWST bands. With deep JWST/NIRCam data from 1.15$\mu$m to 4.44$\mu$m and ancillary HST/ACS and WFC3 data, we determine the physical properties of our sample using spectral energy distribution fitting with BAGPIPES. We demonstrate that our selection method efficiently identifies massive ($\mathrm{\langle \log M_\star/M_\odot \rangle \sim 10}$) and dusty ($\mathrm{\langle A_V\rangle \sim 2.7\ mag}$) sources, with a majority at $z>3$ and predominantly lying on the galaxy main-sequence. We investigate the degree of dust obscured star formation in 49 massive (${\rm log}_{10}(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot})>9$) Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z = 6.5$-$8$ observed as part of the ALMA Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) large program. By creating deep stacks of the photometric data and the REBELS ALMA measurements we determine the average rest-frame UV, optical and far-infrared (FIR) properties which reveal a significant fraction ($f_{\rm obs} = 0.4$-$0.7$) of obscured star formation, consistent with previous studies. From measurements of the rest-frame UV slope, we find that the brightest LBGs at these redshifts show bluer ($\beta \simeq -2.2$) colours than expected from an extrapolation of the colour-magnitude relation found at fainter magnitudes. Assuming a modified blackbody spectral-energy distribution (SED) in the FIR (with dust temperature of $T_{\rm d} = 46\,{\rm K}$ and $\beta_{\rm d} = 2.0$), we find that the REBELS sources are in agreement with the local ''Calzetti-like'' starburst Infrared-excess (IRX)-$\beta$ relation. By reanalysing the data available for 108 galaxies at $z \simeq 4$-$6$ from the ALPINE ALMA large program using a consistent methodology and assumed FIR SED, we show that from $z \simeq 4$-$8$, massive galaxies selected in the rest-frame UV have no appreciable evolution in their derived IRX-$\beta$ relation. When comparing the IRX-$M_{\star}$ relation derived from the combined ALPINE and REBELS sample to relations established at $z < 4$, we find a deficit in the IRX, indicating that at $z > 4$ the proportion of obscured star formation is lower by a factor of $\gtrsim 3$ at a given a $M_{\star}$. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) [CII] and $\sim158$ $\rm\mu m$ continuum observations of REBELS-25, a massive, morphologically complex ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG; $L_{\rm IR}=1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{12}$ L$_\odot$) at $z=7.31$, spectroscopically confirmed by the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) ALMA Large Programme. REBELS-25 has a significant stellar mass of $M_{*}=8^{+4}_{-2}\times10^{9}$ M$_\odot$. From dust-continuum and ultraviolet observations, we determine a total obscured + unobscured star formation rate of SFR $=199^{+101}_{-63}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. This is about four times the SFR estimated from an extrapolated main-sequence. We also infer a [CII]-based molecular gas mass of $M_{\rm H_2}=5.1^{+5.1}_{-2.6}\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$, implying a molecular gas depletion time of $ t_{\rm depl, H_2}=0.3^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ Gyr. We observe a [CII] velocity gradient consistent with disc rotation, but given the current resolution we cannot rule out a more complex velocity structure such as a merger. The spectrum exhibits excess [CII] emission at large positive velocities ($\sim500$ km s$^{-1}$), which we interpret as either a merging companion or an outflow. In the outflow scenario, we derive a lower limit of the mass outflow rate of 200 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with expectations for a star formation-driven outflow. Given its large stellar mass, SFR and molecular gas reservoir $\sim700$ Myr after the Big Bang, we explore the future evolution of REBELS-25. Considering a simple, conservative model assuming an exponentially declining star formation history, constant star formation efficiency, and no additional gas inflow, we find that REBELS-25 has the potential to evolve into a galaxy consistent with the properties of high-mass quiescent galaxies recently observed at $z\sim4$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 8 figures

We present the JWST Cycle 1 53.8hr medium program FRESCO, short for "First Reionization Epoch Spectroscopically Complete Observations". FRESCO covers 62 arcmin$^2$ in each of the two GOODS/CANDELS fields for a total area of 124 arcmin$^2$ exploiting JWST's powerful new grism spectroscopic capabilities at near-infrared wavelengths. By obtaining ~2 hr deep NIRCam/grism observations with the F444W filter, FRESCO yields unprecedented spectra at R~1600 covering 3.8 to 5.0 $\mu$m for most galaxies in the NIRCam field-of-view. This setup enables emission line measurements over most of cosmic history, from strong PAH lines at z~0.2-0.5, to Pa$\alpha$ and Pa$\beta$ at z~1-3, HeI and [SIII] at z~2.5-4.5, H$\alpha$ and [NII] at z~5-6.5, up to [OIII] and H$\beta$ for z~7-9 galaxies, and possibly even [OII] at z~10-12. FRESCO's grism observations provide total line fluxes for accurately estimating galaxy stellar masses and calibrating slit-loss corrections of NIRSpec/MSA spectra in the same field. Additionally, FRESCO results in a mosaic of F182M, F210M, and F444W imaging in the same fields to a depth of ~28.2 mag (5 $\sigma$ in 0.32" diameter apertures). Together with this publication, the v1 imaging mosaics are released as high-level science products via MAST. Here, we describe the overall survey design and the key science goals that can be addressed with FRESCO. We also highlight several, early science results, including: spectroscopic redshifts of Lyman break galaxies that were identified almost 20 years ago, the discovery of broad-line active galactic nuclei at z>4, and resolved Pa$\alpha$ maps of galaxies at z~1.4. We present the first observational infrared luminosity function (IRLF) measurement in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) based on a UV-selected galaxy sample with ALMA spectroscopic observations. Our analysis is based on the ALMA large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), which targets 42 galaxies at $\mathrm{z=6.4-7.7}$ with [CII] 158$\micron$ line scans. 16 sources exhibit a dust detection, 15 of which are also spectroscopically confirmed through the [CII] line. The IR luminosities of the sample range from $\log L_{IR}/L_\odot=11.4$ to 12.2. Using the UVLF as a proxy to derive the effective volume for each of our target sources, we derive IRLF estimates, both for detections and for the full sample including IR luminosity upper limits. The resulting IRLFs are well reproduced by a Schechter function with the characteristic luminosity of $\log L_{*}/L_\odot=11.6^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$. Our observational results are in broad agreement with the average of predicted IRLFs from simulations at $z\sim7$. Conversely, our IRLFs lie significantly below lower redshift estimates, suggesting a rapid evolution from $z\sim4$ to $z\sim7$, into the reionization epoch. The inferred obscured contribution to the cosmic star-formation rate density at $z\sim7$ amounts to $\mathrm{log(SFRD/M_{\odot}/yr/Mpc^{3}) = -2.66^{+0.17}_{-0.14} }$ which is at least $\sim$10\% of UV-based estimates. We conclude that the presence of dust is already abundant in the EoR and discuss the possibility of unveiling larger samples of dusty galaxies with future ALMA and JWST observations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Over the last few years, both ALMA and Spitzer/IRAC observations have revealed a population of likely massive galaxies at $z>3$ that was too faint to be detected in HST rest-frame ultraviolet imaging. However, due to the very limited photometry for individual galaxies, the true nature of these so-called HST-dark galaxies has remained elusive. Here, we present the first sample of such galaxies observed with very deep, high-resolution NIRCam imaging from the Early Release Science Program CEERS. 30 HST-dark sources are selected based on their red colours across 1.6 $\mu$m to 4.4 $\mu$m. Their physical properties are derived from 12-band multi-wavelength photometry, including ancillary HST imaging. We find that these galaxies are generally heavily dust-obscured ($A_{V}\sim2$ mag), massive ($\log (M/M_{\odot}) \sim10$), star-forming sources at $z\sim2-8$ with an observed surface density of $\sim0.8$ arcmin$^{-2}$. This suggests that an important fraction of massive galaxies may have been missing from our cosmic census at $z>3$ all the way into the Reionization epoch. The HST-dark sources lie on the main sequence of galaxies and add an obscured star formation rate density (SFRD) of $\mathrm{3.2^{+1.8}_{-1.3} \times 10^{-3} M_{\odot}/yr/Mpc^{3}}$ at $z\sim7$ showing likely presence of dust in the Epoch of Reionization. The neutral atomic gas content of individual galaxies at large cosmological distances has until recently been difficult to measure due to the weakness of the hyperfine HI 21-cm transition. Here we estimate the HI gas mass of a sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 6.5 - 7.8$ surveyed for [CII]$-158\mu$m emission as part of the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), using a recent calibration of the [CII]-to-HI conversion factor. We find that the HI gas mass excess in galaxies increases as a function of redshift, with an average of $M_{\rm HI} / M_\star \approx 10$, corresponding to HI gas mass fractions of $f_{\rm HI} = M_{\rm HI} / (M_\star + M_{\rm HI}) = 90\%$, at $z\approx 7$. Based on the [CII]-$158\mu$m luminosity function (LF) derived from the same sample of galaxies, we further place constraints on the cosmic HI gas mass density in galaxies ($\rho_{\rm HI}$) at this redshift, which we measure to be $\rho_{\rm HI} = 7.1^{+6.4}_{-3.0} \times 10^{6}\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$. This estimate is substantially lower by a factor of $\approx 10$ than that inferred from an extrapolation of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber (DLA) measurements, and largely depend on the exact [CII] LF adopted. However, we find this decrease in $\rho_{\rm HI}$ to be consistent with recent simulations and argue that this apparent discrepancy is likely a consequence of the DLA sightlines predominantly probing the substantial fraction of HI gas in high-$z$ galactic halos, whereas [CII] traces the HI in the ISM associated with star formation. We make predictions for this build-up of neutral gas in galaxies as a function of redshift, showing that at $z\gtrsim 5$ only $\approx 10\%$ of the cosmic HI gas content is confined in galaxies and associated with the star-forming ISM., Comment: The accepted version of the manuscript in press for ApJL

We present the average [CII] $158\,\rm{\mu m}$ emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [CII] $158\,\rm{\mu m}$ emission lines and dust continua observed by ALMA, taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We find that the average [CII] emission at $z\sim7$ has an effective radius $r_e$ of $2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$. It is $\gtrsim2\times$ larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for $z\lesssim6$ galaxies. We present new determinations of the rest-UV luminosity functions (LFs) at z=2-9 to extremely low luminosities (>-14 mag) from a sample of >2500 lensed galaxies found behind the HFF clusters. For the first time, we present faint-end slope results from lensed samples that are fully consistent with blank-field results over the redshift range z=2-9, while reaching to much lower luminosities than possible from the blank-field studies. Combining the deep lensed sample with the large blank-field samples allows us to set the tight constraints on the faint-end slope alpha of the z=2-9 UV LFs and its evolution. We find a smooth flattening in alpha from -2.28+/-0.10 (z=9) to -1.53+/-0.03 (z=2) with cosmic time (d(alpha)/dz=-0.11+/-0.01), fully consistent with dark matter halo buildup. We utilize these new results to present new measurements of the evolution in the UV luminosity density rho(UV) brightward of -13 mag from z~9 to z~2. Accounting for the SFR densities to faint luminosities implied by our LF results, we find that unobscured star formation dominates the SFR density at z>~4, with obscured star formation dominant thereafter. Having shown we can quantify the faint-end slope alpha of the LF accurately with our lensed HFF samples, we also quantify the apparent curvature in the shape of the UV LF through a curvature parameter delta. The constraints on the curvature delta strongly rule out the presence of a turn-over brightward of -13.1 mag at z~3, -14.3 mag at z~6, and -15.5 mag at all other redshifts between z~9 to z~2., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables, ApJ, in press

We assemble a large comprehensive sample of 2534 z~2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 galaxies lensed by the six clusters from the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program. Making use of the availability of multiple independent magnification models for each of the HFF clusters and alternatively treating one of the models as the "truth," we show that the median magnification factors from the v4 parametric models are typically reliable to values of 30 to 50, and in one case to 100. Using the median magnification factor from the latest v4 models, we estimate the UV luminosities of the 2534 lensed z~2-9 galaxies, finding sources as faint as -12.4 mag at z~3 and -12.9 mag at z~7. We explicitly demonstrate the power of the surface density-magnification relations Sigma(z) vs. mu in the HFF clusters to constrain both distant galaxy properties and cluster lensing properties. Based on the Sigma(z) vs. mu relations, we show that the median magnification estimates from existing public models must be reliable predictors of the true magnification mu to mu<15 (95% confidence). We also use the observed Sigma(z) vs. mu relations to derive constraints on the evolution of the luminosity function faint-end slope from z~7 to z~2, showing that faint-end slope results can be consistent with blank-field studies if, and only if, the selection efficiency shows no strong dependence on the magnification factor mu. We include a fully coupled treatment of metal and dust enrichment into the Delphi semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to explain the dust content of 13 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) detected by the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) REBELS Large Program at $z\simeq 7$. We find that the galaxy dust mass, $M_d$, is regulated by the combination of SNII dust production, astration, shock destruction, and ejection in outflows; grain growth (with a standard timescale $\tau_0= 30$ Myr) plays a negligible role. The model predicts a dust-to-stellar mass ratio of $\sim 0.07-0.1\%$ and a UV-to-total star formation rate relation such that $log (\psi_{\rm UV}) = -0.05 ~[log (\psi)]^{2} + 0.86 ~log(\psi) -0.05$ (implying that 55-80\% of the star formation is obscured) for REBELS galaxies with stellar mass $M_* = 10^{9-10} M_\odot$. This relation reconciles the intrinsic UV luminosity of LBGs with their observed luminosity function at $z=7$. However, 2 out of the 13 systems show dust-to-stellar mass ratios ($\sim 0.94-1.1\%$) that are up to $18\times$ larger than expected from the fiducial relation. Due to the physical coupling between dust and metal enrichment, even decreasing $\tau_0$ to very low values (0.3 Myr) only increases the dust-to-stellar mass ratio by a factor $ \sim 2$. Given that grain growth is not a viable explanation for such high observed ratios of the dust-to-stellar mass, we propose alternative solutions., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We analyse FIR dust continuum measurements for 14 galaxies ($z\approx 7$) in the ALMA REBELS LP to derive their physical properties. Our model uses three input data: (a) the UV spectral slope, $\beta$, (b) the observed UV continuum flux at $1500$A, $F_{\rm UV}$, (c) the observed continuum flux at $\approx 158\mu$m, $F_{158}$, and considers Milky Way (MW) and SMC extinction curves, along with different dust geometries. We find that REBELS galaxies have (28-90.5)% of their star formation obscured; the total (UV+IR) star formation rates are in the range $31.5 < {\rm SFR}/ (M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1}) < 129.5$. The sample-averaged dust mass and temperature are $(1.3\pm 1.1)\times 10^7 M_\odot$ and $52 \pm 11$ K, respectively. In some galaxies dust is abundant (REBELS-14, $M'_d \approx 3.4 \times 10^7 M_\odot$), or hot (REBELS-18, $T'_d \approx 67$ K). The dust distribution is compact ($<0.3$ kpc for 70% of the galaxies). The dust yield per supernova is $0.1 \le y_d/M_\odot \le 3.3$, with 70% of the galaxies requiring $y_d < 0.25 M_\odot$. Three galaxies (REBELS-12, 14, 39) require $y_d > 1 M_\odot$. With the SFR predicted by the model and a MW extinction curve, REBELS galaxies detected in [CII] nicely follow the local $L_{\rm CII}-$SFR relation, and are approximately located on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The sample-averaged gas depletion time is of $0.11\, y_P^{-2}$ Gyr, where $y_P$ is the ratio of the gas-to-stellar distribution radius. For some systems a solution simultaneously matching the observed ($\beta, F_{\rm UV}, F_{158}$) values cannot be found. This occurs when the index $I_m = (F_{158}/F_{\rm UV})/(\beta-\beta_{\rm int})$, where $\beta_{\rm int}$ is the intrinsic UV slope, exceeds $I_m^*\approx 1120$ for a MW curve. For these objects we argue that the FIR and UV emitting regions are not co-spatial, questioning the use of the IRX-$\beta$ relation., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS. ALMA observations have revealed the presence of dust in the first generations of galaxies in the Universe. However, the dust temperature $T_d$ remains mostly unconstrained due to the few available FIR continuum data at redshift $z>5$. This introduces large uncertainties in several properties of high-$z$ galaxies, namely their dust masses, infrared luminosities, and obscured fraction of star formation. Using a new method based on simultaneous [CII] 158$\mu$m line and underlying dust continuum measurements, we derive $T_ d$ in the continuum and [CII] detected $z\approx 7$ galaxies in the ALMA Large Project REBELS sample. We find $39\ \mathrm{K} < T_d < 58\ \mathrm{K}$, and dust masses in the narrow range $M_d = (0.9-3.6)\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$. These results allow us to extend for the first time the reported $T_d(z)$ relation into the Epoch of Reionization. We produce a new physical model that explains the increasing $T_ d(z)$ trend with the decrease of gas depletion time, $t_{dep}=M_g/\mathrm{SFR}$, induced by the higher cosmological accretion rate at early times; this hypothesis yields $T_d \propto (1+z)^{0.4}$. The model also explains the observed $T_d$ scatter at a fixed redshift. We find that dust is warmer in obscured sources, as a larger obscuration results in more efficient dust heating. For UV-transparent (obscured) galaxies, $T_d$ only depends on the gas column density (metallicity), $T_d \propto N_H^{1/6}$ ($T_d \propto Z^{-1/6}$). REBELS galaxies are on average relatively transparent, with effective gas column densities around $N_H \simeq (0.03-1)\times 10^{21} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. We predict that other high-$z$ galaxies (e.g. MACS0416-Y1, A2744-YD4), with estimated $T_d \gg 60$ K, are significantly obscured, low-metallicity systems. In fact $T_d$ is higher in metal-poor systems due to their smaller dust content, which for fixed $L_{ IR}$ results in warmer temperatures., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Before the end of the epoch of reionization, the Hydrogen in the Universe was predominantly neutral. This leads to a strong attenuation of Ly$\alpha$ lines of $z\gtrsim6$ galaxies in the intergalactic medium. Nevertheless, Ly$\alpha$ has been detected up to very high redshifts ($z\sim9$) for several especially UV luminous galaxies. Here, we test to what extent the galaxy's local environment might impact the Ly$\alpha$ transmission of such sources. We present an analysis of dedicated Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging in the CANDELS/EGS field to search for fainter neighbours around three of the most UV luminous and most distant spectroscopically confirmed Ly$\alpha$ emitters: EGS-zs8-1, EGS-zs8-2 and EGSY-z8p7 at $z_\mathrm{spec}=7.73$, 7.48, and 8.68, respectively. We combine the multi-wavelength HST imaging with Spitzer data to reliably select $z\sim7-9$ galaxies around the central, UV-luminous sources. In all cases, we find a clear enhancement of neighbouring galaxies compared to the expected number in a blank field (by a factor $\sim 3-9\times$). Our analysis thus reveals ubiquitous overdensities around luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitting sources in the heart of the cosmic reionization epoch. We show that our results are in excellent agreement with expectations from the Dragons simulation, confirming the theoretical prediction that the first ionized bubbles preferentially formed in overdense regions. We constrain the rest-UV size-luminosity relation for star-forming galaxies at z~4 and z~6, 7, and 8 identified behind clusters from the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program. The size-luminosity relation is key to deriving accurate luminosity functions (LF) for faint galaxies. Making use of the latest lensing models and full data set for these clusters, lensing-corrected sizes and luminosities are derived for 68 z~4, 184 z~6, 93 z~7, and 53 z~8 galaxies. We show that size measurements can be reliably measured up to linear magnifications of 30x, where the lensing models are well calibrated. The sizes we measure span a >1-dex range, from <50 pc to >~500 pc. Uncertainties are based on both the formal fit errors and systematic differences between the public lensing models. These uncertainties range from ~20 pc for the smallest sources to 50 pc for the largest. Using a forward-modeling procedure to model the impact of incompleteness and magnification uncertainties, we characterize the size-luminosity relation at both z~4 and z~6-8. We find that the source sizes of star-forming galaxies at z~4 and z~6-8 scale with luminosity L as L^{0.54\pm0.08} and L^{0.40+/-0.04}, respectively, such that lower luminosity (>~-18 mag) galaxies are smaller than expected from extrapolating the size-luminosity relation at high luminosities (<~-18 mag). Over the past decades, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) observations have provided large samples of UV luminous galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 6, during the so-called epoch of reionization. While a few of these UV identified galaxies revealed significant dust reservoirs, very heavily dust-obscured sources at these early times have remained elusive. They are limited to a rare population of extreme starburst galaxies, and companions of rare quasars. These studies conclude that the contribution of dust-obscured galaxies to the cosmic star formation rate density at $z>6$ is sub-dominant. Recent ALMA and Spitzer observations have identified a more abundant, less extreme population of obscured galaxies at $z=3-6$. However, this population has not been confirmed in the reionization epoch so far. Here, we report the discovery of two dust-obscured star forming galaxies at $z=6.6813\pm0.0005$ and $z=7.3521\pm0.0005$. These objects are not detected in existing rest-frame UV data, and were only discovered through their far-infrared [CII] lines and dust continuum emission as companions to typical UV-luminous galaxies at the same redshift. The two galaxies exhibit lower infrared luminosities and star-formation rates than extreme starbursts, in line with typical star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. This population of heavily dust-obscured galaxies appears to contribute 10-25 per cent to the $z>6$ cosmic star formation rate density., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, published in Nature

The Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) is a cycle-7 ALMA Large Program (LP) that is identifying and performing a first characterization of many of the most luminous star-forming galaxies known in the z>6.5 universe. REBELS is providing this probe by systematically scanning 40 of the brightest UV-selected galaxies identified over a 7-deg**2 area for bright 158-micron [CII] and 88-micron [OIII] lines and dust-continuum emission. Selection of the 40 REBELS targets was done by combining our own and other photometric selections, each of which is subject to extensive vetting using three completely independent sets of photometry and template-fitting codes. Building on the observational strategy deployed in two pilot programs, we are increasing the number of massive interstellar medium (ISM) reservoirs known at z>6.5 by ~4-5x to >30. In this manuscript, we motivate the observational strategy deployed in the REBELS program and present initial results. Based on the 60.6 hours of ALMA observations taken in the first year of the program (November 2019 to January 2020), 18 highly significant >~7sigma [CII] lines have already been discovered, the bulk of which (13/18) also show >~3.3 sigma dust-continuum emission. These newly discovered lines more than triple the number of bright ISM-cooling lines known in the z>6.5 universe, such that the number of ALMA-derived redshifts at z>6.5 already rival Lya redshift discoveries. An analysis of the completeness of our search results vs. star formation rate (SFR) suggests an ~79% efficiency in scanning for [CII] when the SFR(UV+IR) is in excess of 28 M_sol/yr. We compare the sizes and luminosities of faint $z=6$-8 galaxies magnified by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) clusters with star-forming regions, as well as more evolved objects, in the nearby universe. Our high-redshift comparison sample includes 333 z=6-8 galaxies, for which size measurements were made as part of a companion study where lensing magnifications were estimated from various public models. Accurate size measurements for these sources are complicated by the lens model uncertainties, but other results and arguments suggest that faint galaxies are small, as discussed in a companion study. The measured sizes for sources in our comparison sample range from <50 pc to ~500 pc. For many of the lowest luminosity sources, extremely small sizes are inferred, reaching individual sizes as small as 10-30 pc, with several sources in the 10-15 pc range with our conservative magnification limits. The sizes and luminosities are similar to those of single star cluster complexes like 30 Doradus in the lower-redshift universe and -- in a few cases -- super star clusters. The identification of these compact, faint star-forming sources in the z~6-8 universe also allows us to set upper limits on the proto-globular cluster LF at z~6. By comparisons of the counts and sizes with recent models, we rule out (with some caveats) proto-globular cluster formation scenarios favoring substantial (xi=10) post-formation mass loss and set useful upper limits on others. Here we provide the most comprehensive determinations of the rest-frame $UV$ LF available to date with HST at z~2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Essentially all of the non-cluster extragalactic legacy fields are utilized, including the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), the Hubble Frontier Field parallel fields, and all five CANDELS fields, for a total survey area of 1136 arcmin^2. Our determinations include galaxies at z~2-3 leveraging the deep HDUV, UVUDF, and ERS WFC3/UVIS observations available over a ~150 arcmin^2 area in the GOODS North and GOODS South regions. All together, our collective samples include >24,000 sources, >2.3x larger than previous selections with HST. 5766, 6332, 7240, 3449, 1066, 601, 246, and 33 sources are identified at z~2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, respectively. Combining our results with an earlier z~10 LF determination by Oesch+2018a, we quantify the evolution of the $UV$ LF. Our results indicate that there is (1) a smooth flattening of the faint-end slope alpha from alpha~-2.4 at z~10 to -1.5 at z~2, (2) minimal evolution in the characteristic luminosity M* at z>~2.5, and (3) a monotonic increase in the normalization log_10 phi* from z~10 to z~2, which can be well described by a simple second-order polynomial, consistent with an "accelerated" evolution scenario. We report the results of an expanded search for z~9-10 candidates over the ~883 arcmin^2 CANDELS+ERS fields. This study adds 147 arcmin^2 to the search area we consider over the CANDELS COSMOS, UDS, and EGS fields, while expanding our selection to include sources with bluer J_{125}-H_{160} colors than our previous J_{125}-H_{160}>0.5 mag selection. In searching for new z~9-10 candidates, we make full use of all available HST, Spitzer/IRAC, and ground-based imaging data. As a result of our expanded search and use of broader color criteria, 3 new candidate z~9-10 galaxies are identified. We also find again the z=8.683 source previously confirmed by Zitrin+2015. This brings our sample of probable z~9-11 galaxy candidates over the CANDELS+ERS fields to 19 sources in total, equivalent to 1 candidate per 47 arcmin^2 (1 per 10 WFC3/IR fields). To be comprehensive, we also discuss 28 mostly lower likelihood z~9-10 candidates, including some sources that seem to be reliably at z>8 using the HST+IRAC data alone, but which the ground-based data show are much more likely at z<4. One case example is a bright z~9.4 candidate COS910-8 which seems instead to be at z~2. Based on this expanded sample, we obtain a more robust LF at z~9 and improved constraints on the volume density of bright z~9 and z~10 galaxies. Our improved z~9-10 results again reinforce previous findings for strong evolution in the UV LF at z>8, with a factor of ~10 evolution seen in the luminosity density from z~10 to z~8., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The James Webb Space Telescope will allow to spectroscopically study an unprecedented number of galaxies deep into the reionization era, notably by detecting [OIII] and H$\beta$ nebular emission lines. To efficiently prepare such observations, we photometrically select a large sample of galaxies at $z\sim8$ and study their rest-frame optical emission lines. Combining data from the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide-Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) survey and from HST, we perform spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, using synthetic SEDs from a large grid of photoionization models. The deep Spitzer/IRAC data combined with our models exploring a large parameter space enables to constrain the [OIII]+H$\beta$ fluxes and equivalent widths for our sample, as well as the average physical properties of $z\sim8$ galaxies, such as the ionizing photon production efficiency with $\log(\xi_\mathrm{ion}/\mathrm{erg}^{-1}\hspace{1mm}\mathrm{Hz})\geq25.77$. We find a relatively tight correlation between the [OIII]+H$\beta$ and UV luminosity, which we use to derive for the first time the [OIII]+H$\beta$ luminosity function (LF) at $z\sim8$. The $z\sim8$ [OIII]+H$\beta$ LF is higher at all luminosities compared to lower redshift, as opposed to the UV LF, due to an increase of the [OIII]+H$\beta$ luminosity at a given UV luminosity from $z\sim3$ to $z\sim8$. Finally, using the [OIII]+H$\beta$ LF, we make predictions for JWST/NIRSpec number counts of $z\sim8$ galaxies. We find that the current wide-area extragalactic legacy fields are too shallow to use JWST at maximal efficiency for $z\sim8$ spectroscopy even at 1hr depth and JWST pre-imaging to $\gtrsim30$ mag will be required., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We compare the sizes and luminosities of 307 faint z=6-8 sources revealed by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program with sources in the nearby universe. Making use of the latest lensing models and data from the first four HFF clusters with an extensive suite of public lens models, we measure both the sizes and luminosities for 153 z~6, 101 z~7, and 53 z~8 galaxies. The sizes range over more than a decade from ~500 to <50 pc. Extremely small sizes are inferred for many of our lowest luminosity sources, reaching individual sizes as small as 10-30 pc (the smallest is 11(-6)(+28) pc). The uncertainty in these measures ranges from 80 pc for the largest sources to typically about 20 pc for the smallest. Such sizes are smaller than extrapolations of the size-luminosity relation, and expectations for the completeness of our faint samples, suggesting a likely break in the size-luminosity relation at ~-17 mag with size proportional to L**(0.50(-0.11)(+0.10)). The sizes and luminosities of the lowest-luminosity sources are similar to those of single star cluster complexes like 30 Doradus in the lower-redshift universe and -- in a few cases -- super star clusters. Remarkably, our identification of these compact, faint star-forming sources in the z~6-8 universe also allow us to set upper limits on the proto-globular cluster LF at z~6. Comparisons with recent models allow us to rule out (with some caveats) some scenarios for proto-globular cluster formation and set useful upper limits on other less extreme ones. We present an analysis of all prime HST legacy fields spanning >800 arcmin^2 for the search of z~10 galaxy candidates and the study of their UV luminosity function (LF). In particular, we present new z~10 candidates selected from the full Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) dataset. Despite the addition of these new fields, we find a low abundance of z~10 candidates with only 9 reliable sources identified in all prime HST datasets that include the HUDF09/12, the HUDF/XDF, all the CANDELS fields, and now the HFF survey. Based on this comprehensive search, we find that the UV luminosity function decreases by one order of magnitude from z~8 to z~10 at all luminosities over a four magnitude range. This also implies a decrease of the cosmic star-formation rate density by an order of magnitude within 170 Myr from z~8 to z~10. We show that this accelerated evolution compared to lower redshift can entirely be explained by the fast build-up of the dark matter halo mass function at z>8. Consequently, the predicted UV LFs from several models of galaxy formation are in good agreement with this observed trend, even though the measured UV LF lies at the low end of model predictions. In particular, the number of only 9 observed candidate galaxies is lower, by ~50%, than predicted by galaxy evolution models. The difference is generally still consistent within the Poisson and cosmic variance uncertainties. However, essentially all models predict larger numbers than observed. We discuss the implications of these results in light of the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope mission, which is poised to find much larger samples of z~10 galaxies as well as their progenitors at less than 400 Myr after the Big Bang., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, minor updates to match accepted version

We present a multi-wavelength photometric catalog in the COSMOS field as part of the observations by the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The catalog is based on Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) observations of the COSMOS field (centered at RA: $10^h00^m28^s$, Dec:$+02^{\circ}12^{\prime}21^{\prime\prime}$). The final catalog has 38671 sources with photometric data in forty two bands from UV to the infrared ($\rm \sim 0.3-8\,\mu m$). This includes broad-band photometry from the HST, CFHT, Subaru, VISTA and Spitzer Space Telescope in the visible, near infrared and infrared bands along with intermediate and narrow-band photometry from Subaru and medium band data from Mayall NEWFIRM. Source detection was conducted in the WFC3 F160W band (at $\rm 1.6\,\mu m$) and photometry is generated using the Template FITting algorithm. We further present a catalog of the physical properties of sources as identified in the HST F160W band and measured from the multi-band photometry by fitting the observed spectral energy distributions of sources against templates., Comment: 28 Pages, 22 Figures and 10 Tables. Our goal is to study the evolution of the $B-$band luminosity function (LF) since $z=1$ using ALHAMBRA data. We used the photometric redshift and the $I-$band selection magnitude probability distribution functions (PDFs) of those ALHAMBRA galaxies with $I\leq24$ mag to compute the posterior LF. We statistically studied quiescent and star-forming galaxies using the template information encoded in the PDFs. The LF covariance matrix in redshift-magnitude-galaxy type space was computed, including the cosmic variance. That was estimated from the intrinsic dispersion of the LF measurements in the 48 ALHAMBRA sub-fields. The uncertainty due to the photometric redshift prior is also included in our analysis. We modelled the LF with a redshift-dependent Schechter function affected by the same selection effects than the data. The measured ALHAMBRA LF at $0.2\leq z<1$ and the evolving Schechter parameters both for quiescent and star-forming galaxies agree with previous results in the literature. The estimated redshift evolution of $M_B^* \propto Qz$ is $Q_{\rm SF}=-1.03\pm0.08$ and $Q_{\rm Q}=-0.80\pm0.08$, and of $\log \phi^* \propto Pz$ is $P_{\rm SF}=-0.01\pm0.03$ and $P_{\rm Q}=-0.41\pm0.05$. The measured faint-end slopes are $\alpha_{\rm SF}=-1.29\pm0.02$ and $\alpha_{\rm Q}=-0.53\pm0.04$. We find a significant population of faint quiescent galaxies, modelled by a second Schechter function with slope $\beta=-1.31\pm0.11$. We find a factor $2.55\pm0.14$ decrease in the luminosity density $j_B$ of star-forming galaxies, and a factor $1.25\pm0.16$ increase in the $j_B$ of quiescent ones since $z=1$, confirming the continuous build-up of the quiescent population with cosmic time. The contribution of the faint quiescent population to $j_B$ increases from 3% at $z=1$ to 6% at $z=0$. We use the largest sample of z~6 galaxies to date from the first four Hubble Frontier Fields clusters to set constraints on the shape of the z~6 luminosity functions (LFs) to fainter than Muv=-14 mag. We quantify, for the first time, the impact of magnification uncertainties on LF results and thus provide more realistic constraints than other recent work. Our simulations reveal that for the highly-magnified sources the systematic uncertainties can become extremely large fainter than -14 mag, reaching several orders of magnitude at 95% confidence at ~-12 mag. Our new forward-modeling formalism incorporates the impact of magnification uncertainties into the LF results by exploiting the availability of many independent magnification models for the same cluster. One public magnification model is used to construct a mock high-redshift galaxy sample that is then analyzed using the other magnification models to construct a LF. Large systematic errors occur at high magnifications (mu>30) because of differences between the models. The volume densities we derive for faint (>-17 mag) sources are ~3-4x lower than one recent report and give a faint-end slope alpha=-1.92+/-0.04, which is 3.0-3.5sigma shallower (including or not including the size uncertainties, respectively). We introduce a new curvature parameter delta to model the faint end of the LF and demonstrate that the observations permit (at 68% confidence) a turn-over at z~6 in the range -15.3 to -14.2 mag, depending on the assumed lensing model. The present consideration of magnification errors and new size determinations raise doubts about previous reports regarding the form of the LF at >-14 mag. The original ALHAMBRA catalogue contained over 400,000 galaxies selected using a synthetic F814W image, to the magnitude limit AB(F814W)$\approx$24.5. Given the photometric redshift depth of the ALHAMBRA multiband data (=0.86) and the approximately $I$-band selection, there is a noticeable bias against red objects at moderate redshift. We avoid this bias by creating a new catalogue selected in the $K_s$ band. This newly obtained catalogue is certainly shallower in terms of apparent magnitude, but deeper in terms of redshift, with a significant population of red objects at $z>1$. We select objects using the $K_s$ band images, which reach an approximate AB magnitude limit $K_s \approx 22$. We generate masks and derive completeness functions to characterize the sample. We have tested the quality of the photometry and photometric redshifts using both internal and external checks. Our final catalogue includes $\approx 95,000$ sources down to $K_s \approx 22$, with a significant tail towards high redshift. We have checked that there is a large sample of objects with spectral energy distributions that correspond to that of massive, passively evolving galaxies at $z > 1$, reaching as far as $z \approx 2.5$. We provide the first observational constraints on the sizes of the faintest galaxies lensed by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) clusters. Ionizing radiation from faint galaxies likely drives cosmic reionization, and the HFF initiative provides a key opportunity to find such galaxies. Yet, we cannot really assess their ionizing emissivity without a robust measurement of their sizes, since this is key to quantifying both their prevalence and the faint-end slope to the UV luminosity function. Here we provide the first such size constraints with 2 new techniques. The first utilizes the fact that the detectability of highly-magnified galaxies as a function of shear is very dependent on a galaxy's size. Only the most compact galaxies will remain detectable in regions of high shear (vs. a larger detectable size range for low shear), a phenomenon we carefully quantify using simulations. Remarkably, however, no correlation is found between the surface density of faint galaxies and the predicted shear, using 87 faint high-magnification mu>10 z~2-8 galaxies seen behind the first 4 HFF clusters. This can only be the case if such faint (~-15 mag) galaxies have significantly smaller sizes than luminous galaxies. We constrain their half-light radii to be <~30 mas (<160-240 pc). As a 2nd size probe, we rotate and stack 26 faint high-magnification sources along the major shear axis. Less elongation is found than even for objects with an intrinsic half-light radius of 10 mas. Together these results indicate that extremely faint z~2-8 galaxies have near point-source profiles in the HFF dataset (half-light radii conservatively <30 mas and likely 5-10 mas). These results suggest smaller completeness corrections and hence much lower volume densities for faint z~2-8 galaxies and shallower faint-end slopes than have been derived in many recent studies (by factors of ~2-3 and by dalpha>~0.1-0.3)., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the clustering of galaxies as a function of spectral type and redshift in the range $0.35 < z < 1.1$ using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The data cover 2.381 deg$^2$ in 7 fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts [$\sigma_z < 0.014(1+z)$] down to $I_{AB} < 24$. From this catalog we draw five fixed number density, redshift-limited bins. We estimate the clustering evolution for two different spectral populations selected using the ALHAMBRA-based photometric templates: quiescent and star-forming galaxies. For each sample, we measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function. Our calculations are performed over the range $[0.03,10.0] h^{-1}$ Mpc, allowing us to find a steeper trend for $r_p \lesssim 0.2 h^{-1}$ Mpc, which is especially clear for star-forming galaxies. Our analysis also shows a clear early differentiation in the clustering properties of both populations: star-forming galaxies show weaker clustering with evolution in the correlation length over the analysed redshift range, while quiescent galaxies show stronger clustering already at high redshifts, and no appreciable evolution. We also perform the bias calculation where similar segregation is found, but now it is among the quiescent galaxies where a growing evolution with redshift is clearer. These findings clearly corroborate the well known colour-density relation, confirming that quiescent galaxies are mainly located in dark matter halos that are more massive than those typically populated by star-forming galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

Galaxies represent one of the preferred candidate sources to drive the reionization of the universe. Even as gains are made in mapping the galaxy UV luminosity density to z>6, significant uncertainties remain regarding the conversion to the implied ionizing emissivity. The relevant unknowns are the Lyman-continuum (LyC) photon production efficiency xi_{ion} and the escape fraction f_{esc}. As we show here, the first of these unknowns is directly measureable in z=4-5 galaxies, based on the impact the Halpha line has on the observed IRAC fluxes. By computing a LyC photon production rate from the implied Halpha luminosities for a broad selection of z=4-5 galaxies and comparing this against the dust-corrected UV-continuum luminosities, we provide the first-ever direct estimates of the LyC photon production efficiency xi_{ion} for the z>~4 galaxy population. We find log_{10} xi_{ion}/[Hz/ergs] to have a mean value of 25.27_{-0.03}^{+0.03} and 25.34_{-0.02}^{+0.02} for sub-L* z=4-5 galaxies adopting Calzetti and SMC dust laws, respectively. Reassuringly, both values are consistent with standardly assumed xi_{ion}'s in reionization models, with a slight preference for higher xi_{ion}'s (by ~0.1 dex) adopting the SMC dust law. A modest ~0.03-dex increase in these estimates would result if the escape fraction for ionizing photons is non-zero and galaxies dominate the ionizing emissivity at z~4.4. High values of xi_{ion} (~25.5-25.8 dex) are derived for the bluest galaxies (beta<-2.3) in our samples, independent of dust law and consistent with results for a z=7.045 galaxy. Such elevated values of xi_{ion} would have important consequences, indicating that f_{esc} cannot be in excess of 13% unless the galaxy UV luminosity function does not extend down to -13 mag or the clumping factor is greater than 3. The IRAC ultradeep field (IUDF) and IRAC Legacy over GOODS (IGOODS) programs are two ultradeep imaging surveys at 3.6{\mu}m and 4.5{\mu}m with the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). The primary aim is to directly detect the infrared light of reionization epoch galaxies at z > 7 and to constrain their stellar populations. The observations cover the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), including the two HUDF parallel fields, and the CANDELS/GOODS-South, and are combined with archival data from all previous deep programs into one ultradeep dataset. The resulting imaging reaches unprecedented coverage in IRAC 3.6{\mu}m and 4.5{\mu}m ranging from > 50 hour over 150 arcmin^2, > 100 hour over 60 sq arcmin2, to 200 hour over 5 - 10 arcmin$^2$. This paper presents the survey description, data reduction, and public release of reduced mosaics on the same astrometric system as the CANDELS/GOODS-South WFC3 data. To facilitate prior-based WFC3+IRAC photometry, we introduce a new method to create high signal-to-noise PSFs from the IRAC data and reconstruct the complex spatial variation due to survey geometry. The PSF maps are included in the release, as are registered maps of subsets of the data to enable reliability and variability studies. Simulations show that the noise in the ultradeep IRAC images decreases approximately as the square root of integration time over the range 20 - 200 hours, well below the classical confusion limit, reaching 1{\sigma} point source sensitivities as faint as of 15 nJy (28.5 AB) at 3.6{\mu}m and 18 nJy (28.3 AB) at 4.5{\mu}m. The value of such ultradeep IRAC data is illustrated by direct detections of z = 7 - 8 galaxies as faint as HAB = 28., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

The deep, wide-area (~800-900 arcmin**2) near-infrared/WFC3/IR + Spitzer/IRAC observations over the CANDELS fields have been a remarkable resource for constraining the bright end of high redshift UV luminosity functions (LFs). However, the lack of HST 1.05-micron observations over the CANDELS fields has made it difficult to identify z~9-10 sources robustly, since such data are needed to confirm the presence of an abrupt Lyman break at 1.2 microns. We report here on the successful identification of many such z~9-10 sources from a new HST program (z9-CANDELS) that targets the highest-probability z~9-10 galaxy candidates with observations at 1.05 microns, to search for a robust Lyman-break at 1.2 microns. The potential z~9-10 candidates are preselected from the full HST, Spitzer/IRAC S-CANDELS observations, and the deepest-available ground-based optical+near-infrared observations. We identified 15 credible z~9-10 galaxies over the CANDELS fields. Nine of these galaxies lie at z~9 and 5 are new identifications. Our targeted follow-up strategy has proven to be very efficient in making use of scarce HST time to secure a reliable sample of z~9-10 galaxies. Through extensive simulations, we replicate the selection process for our sample (both the preselection and follow-up) and use it to improve current estimates for the volume density of bright z~9 and z~10 galaxies. The volume densities we find are 5(-2)(+3)x and 8(-3)(+9)x lower, respectively, than found at z~8. When compared with the best-fit evolution (i.e., dlog_{10} rho(UV)/dz=-0.29+/-0.02) in the UV luminosities densities from z~8 to z~4 integrated to 0.3L*(z=3) (-20 mag), these luminosity densities are 2.6(-0.9)(+1.5)x and 2.2(-1.1)(+2.0)x lower, respectively, than the extrapolated trends. We identify 4 unusually bright (H < 25.5) galaxies from HST and Spitzer CANDELS data with probable redshifts z ~ 7-9. These identifications include the brightest-known galaxies to date at z > 7.5. As Y-band observations are not available over the full CANDELS program to perform a standard Lyman-break selection of z > 7 galaxies, we employ an alternate strategy using deep Spitzer/IRAC data. We identify z ~ 7.1 - 9.1 galaxies by selecting z >~ 6 galaxies from the HST CANDELS data that show quite red IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] colors, indicating strong [OIII]+Hbeta lines in the 4.5 micron band. This selection strategy was validated using a modest sample for which we have deep Y-band coverage, and subsequently used to select the brightest z > 7 sources. Applying the IRAC criteria to all HST-selected optical-dropout galaxies over the full ~900 arcmin**2 of the CANDELS survey revealed four unusually bright z ~ 7.1, 7.6, 7.9 and 8.6 candidates. The median [3.6]-[4.5] color of our selected z ~ 7.1-9.1 sample is consistent with rest-frame [OIII]+Hbeta EWs of ~1500A, in the [4.5] band. Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy has been independently reported for two of our selected sources, showing Ly-alpha at redshifts of 7.7302+/-0.0006 and 8.683^+0.001_-0.004, respectively. We present similar Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy for a third selected galaxy with a probable 4.7sigma Ly-alpha line at z_spec=7.4770+/-0.0008. All three have H-band magnitudes of ~25 mag and are ~0.5 mag more luminous (M(UV) ~ -22.0) than any previously discovered z ~ 8 galaxy, with important implications for the UV LF. Our 3 brightest, highest redshift z > 7 galaxies all lie within the CANDELS EGS field, providing a dramatic illustration of the potential impact of field-to-field variance., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. We study the clustering of galaxies as function of luminosity and redshift in the range $0.35 < z < 1.25$ using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The ALHAMBRA data used in this work cover $2.38 \mathrm{deg}^2$ in 7 independent fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts, $\sigma_z \lesssim 0.014 (1+z)$, down to $I_{\rm AB} < 24$. Given the depth of the survey, we select samples in $B$-band luminosity down to $L^{\rm th} \simeq 0.16 L^{*}$ at $z = 0.9$. We measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function, accounting for photometric redshifts uncertainties. We infer the galaxy bias, and study its evolution with luminosity. We study the effect of sample variance, and confirm earlier results that the COSMOS and ELAIS-N1 fields are dominated by the presence of large structures. For the intermediate and bright samples, $L^{\rm med} \gtrsim 0.6L^{*}$, we obtain a strong dependence of bias on luminosity, in agreement with previous results at similar redshift. We are able to extend this study to fainter luminosities, where we obtain an almost flat relation, similar to that observed at low redshift. Regarding the evolution of bias with redshift, our results suggest that the different galaxy populations studied reside in haloes covering a range in mass between $\log_{10}[M_{\rm h}/(h^{-1}\mathrm{M}_{\odot})] \gtrsim 11.5$ for samples with $L^{\rm med} \simeq 0.3 L^{*}$ and $\log_{10}[M_{\rm h}/(h^{-1}\mathrm{M}_{\odot})] \gtrsim 13.0$ for samples with $L^{\rm med} \simeq 2 L^{*}$, with typical occupation numbers in the range of $\sim 1 - 3$ galaxies per halo., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables. We have developed a new method, close in philosophy to the photometric redshift technique, which can be applied to spectral data of very low signal-to-noise ratio. Using it we intend to measure redshifts while minimising the dangers posed by the usual extraction techniques. GRB afterglows have generally very simple optical spectra over which the separate effects of absorption and reddening in the GRB host, the intergalactic medium, and our own Galaxy are superimposed. We model all these effects over a series of template afterglow spectra to produce a set of clean spectra that reproduce what would reach our telescope. We also model carefully the effects of the telescope-spectrograph combination and the properties of noise in the data, which are then applied on the template spectra. The final templates are compared to the two-dimensional spectral data, and the basic parameters (redshift, spectral index, Hydrogen absorption column) are estimated using statistical tools. We show how our method works by applying it to our data of the NIR afterglow of GRB090423. At z ~ 8.2, this was the most distant object ever observed. We use the spectrum taken by our team with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo to derive the GRB redshift and its intrinsic neutral Hydrogen column density. Our best fit yields z=8.4^+0.05/-0.03 and N(HI)<5x10^20 cm^-2, but with a highly non-Gaussian uncertainty including the redshift range z [6.7, 8.5] at the 2-sigma confidence level. Our method will be useful to maximise the recovered information from low-quality spectra, particularly when the set of possible spectra is limited or easily parameterisable while at the same time ensuring an adequate confidence analysis., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Context: Multiwavelength observations of gamma-ray burst prompt and afterglow emission are a key tool to disentangle the various possible emission processes and scenarios proposed to interpret the complex gamma-ray burst phenomenology. Aims: We collected a large dataset on GRB060908 in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the prompt emission as well as the early and late afterglow. Methods: Data from Swift-BAT, -XRT and -UVOT together with data from a number of different ground-based optical/NIR and millimeter telescopes allowed us to follow the afterglow evolution from about a minute from the high-energy event down to the host galaxy limit. We discuss the physical parameters required to model these emissions. Results: The prompt emission of GRB060908 was characterized by two main periods of activity, spaced by a few seconds of low intensity, with a tight correlation between activity and spectral hardness. Observations of the afterglow began less than one minute after the high-energy event, when it was already in a decaying phase, and it was characterized by a rather flat optical/NIR spectrum which can be interpreted as due to a hard energy-distribution of the emitting electrons. On the other hand, the X-ray spectrum of the afterglow could be fit by a rather soft electron distribution. Conclusions: GRB060908 is a good example of a gamma-ray burst with a rich multi-wavelength set of observations. The availability of this dataset, built thanks to the joint efforts of many different teams, allowed us to carry out stringent tests for various interpretative scenarios showing that a satisfactorily modeling of this event is challenging. In the future, similar efforts will enable us to obtain optical/NIR coverage comparable in quality and quantity to the X-ray data for more events, therefore opening new avenues to progress gamma-ray burst research., Comment: A&A, in press. 11 pages, 5 figures

The approach of Observational Astronomy is mainly aimed at the construction of larger aperture telescopes, more sensitive detectors and broader wavelength coverage. Certainly fruitful, this approach turns out to be not completely fulfilling the needs when phenomena related to the formation of black holes (BH), neutron stars (NS) and relativistic stars in general are concerned. Recently, mainly through the Vela, Beppo-SAX and Swift satellites, we reached a reasonable knowledge of the most violent events in the Universe and of some of the processes we believe are leading to the formation of black holes (BH). We plan to open a new window of opportunity to study the variegated physics of very fast astronomical transients, particularly the one related to extreme compact objects. The innovative approach is based on three cornerstones: 1) the design (the conceptual design has been already completed) of a 3m robotic telescope and related focal plane instrumentation characterized by the unique features: "No telescope points faster"; 2) simultaneous multi-wavelengths observations (photometry, spectroscopy o\& polarimetry); 3) high time resolution observations. The conceptual design of the telescope and related instrumentation is optimized to address the following topics: High frequency a-periodic variability, Polarization, High z GRBs, Short GRBs, GRB-Supernovae association, Multi-wavelengths simultaneous photometry and rapid low dispersion spectroscopy. Gamma-ray burst are thought to be produced by highly relativistic outflows. Although upper and lower limits for the outflow initial Lorentz factor $\Gamma_0$ are available, observational efforts to derive a direct determination of $\Gamma_0$ have so far failed or provided ambiguous results. As a matter of fact, the shape of the early-time afterglow light curve is strongly sensitive on $\Gamma_0$ which determines the time of the afterglow peak, i.e. when the outflow and the shocked circumburst material share a comparable amount of energy. We now comment early-time observations of the near-infrared afterglows of GRB 060418 and GRB 060607A performed by the REM robotic telescope. The Variable Star One-shot Project (VSOP) is aimed at (1) providing the variability type and spectral type of all unstudied variable stars, (2) process, publish, and make the data available as automatically as possible, and (3) generate serendipitous discoveries. This first paper describes the project itself, the acquisition of the data, the dataflow, the spectroscopic analysis and the on-line availability of the fully calibrated and reduced data. We also present the results on the 221 stars observed during the first semester of the project. We used the high-resolution echelle spectrographs HARPS and FEROS in the ESO La Silla Observatory (Chile) to survey known variable stars. Once reduced by the dedicated pipelines, the radial velocities are determined from cross correlation with synthetic template spectra, and the spectral types are determined by an automatic minimum distance matching to synthetic spectra, with traditional manual spectral typing cross-checks. The variability types are determined by manually evaluating the available light curves and the spectroscopy. In the future, a new automatic classifier, currently being developed by members of the VSOP team, based on these spectroscopic data and on the photometric classifier developed for the COROT and Gaia space missions, will be used. We confirm or revise spectral types of 221 variable stars from the GCVS. We identify 26 previously unknown multiple systems, among them several visual binaries with spectroscopic binary individual components. We present new individual results for the multiple systems V349 Vel and BC Gru, for the composite spectrum star V4385 Sgr, for the T-Tauri star V1045 Sco, and for DM Boo which we re-classify as a BY Draconis variable. The Variable Star One-shot Project (VSOP) aimed at providing to the world-wide stellar community the necessary one-shot spectrum of unstudied variable stars, too often classified as such by an analysis of photometric data only. The VSOP has established an new kind of observational model, where all steps from observations to spectral analysis, are automatized (or are underway to be fully automatized). The project is centralized on a collaborative wiki website. The VSOP operational model is very successful, data is continously flowing and being analyszed, and VSOP is now a worldwide open collaboration of people with very different and complementary skills and expertise. The idea of a central wiki website has been extended by one of us to propose a new service to the whole astronomical community, called Wikimbad. Wikimbad is an open wiki website aimed at collecting, organizing and making publicly available all kind of reduced and published astronomical data. Its strengths and a comparison with the Virtual Observatory are discussed. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) emission is believed to originate in highly relativistic fireballs. Currently, only lower limits were securely set to the initial fireball Lorentz factor Gamma_0. We aim to provide a direct measure of Gamma_0. The early-time afterglow light curve carries information about Gamma_0, which determines the time of the afterglow peak. We have obtained early observations of the near-infrared afterglows of GRB 060418 and GRB 060607A with the REM robotic telescope. For both events, the afterglow peak could be clearly singled out, allowing a firm determination of the fireball Lorentz of Gamma_0 ~ 400, fully confirming the highly relativistic nature of GRB fireballs. The deceleration radius was inferred to be R_dec ~ 10^17 cm. This is much larger than the internal shocks radius (believed to power the prompt emission), thus providing further evidence for a different origin of the prompt and afterglow stages of the GRB., Comment: 6 pages, 3 color figures, 3 tables (including two online); discussion significantly extended, results unchanged; accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope optical observations of the X-ray flash (XRF) 020903, covering 300 days. The afterglow showed a very rapid rise in the first day, followed by a relatively slow decay in the next few days. There was a clear bump in the light curve after ~25 days, accompanied by a drastic change in the spectral energy distribution. The light curve and the spectral energy distribution are naturally interpreted as the emergence -- and subsequent decay -- of a supernova (SN), similar to SN 1998bw. At peak luminosity, the SN is estimated to be 0.8 +/- 0.1 mag fainter than SN1998bw. This argues in favor of the existence of a supernova associated with this X-ray flash. A spectrum obtained 35 days after the burst shows emission lines from the host galaxy. We use this spectrum to put an upper limit on the oxygen abundance of the host at [O/H] < -0.6 dex. We also discuss a possible trend between the softness of several bursts and the early behavior of the optical afterglow, in the sense that XRFs and X-ray rich GRBs seem to have a plateau phase or even a rising light curve. This can be naturally explained in models where XRFs are similar to GRBs but seen off the jet axis., Comment: ApJ, in press. Multiband VRIJHK photometry of the Blazar PKS 0537-441 obtained with the REM telescope from December 2004 to March 2005 is presented. A major period of activity is found with more than four magnitudes variability in the V filter in 50 days and of 2.5 in 10 days. In intensity and duration the activity is similar to that of 1972 reported by Eggen (1973), but it is much better documented. No clear evidence of variability on time-scale of minutes is found. GRB 021004 is one of the best sampled gamma-ray bursts (GRB) to date, although the nature of its light curve is still being debated. Here we present a large amount (107) of new optical, near-infrared (NIR) and millimetre observations, ranging from 2 hours to more than a year after the burst. Fitting the multiband data to a model based on multiple energy injections suggests that at least 7 refreshed shocks took place during the evolution of the afterglow, implying a total energy release (collimated within an angle of 1.8 deg) of ~ 8x10^51 erg. Analysis of the late photometry reveals that the GRB 021004 host is a low extinction (Av ~ 0.1) starburst galaxy with M_B ~ -22.0., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&Ax
