A popular strategy consists of transferring the unknown electric field shape onto a chirped laser pulse, which is eventually analyzed. The technique has been investigated and/or been used as routine diagnostics at FELIX, DESY, PSI, Eu-XFEL, KARA, SOLEIL, etc. However fundamental time-resolution limitations have been strongly limiting the potential of these methods. We review recent results on a strategy designed for overcoming this limit: DEOS [1] (Diversity Electro-Optic Sampling). A special experimental design enables to reconstruct numerically the input electric signal with unprecedented temporal resolution. As a result, 200 fs temporal resolution over more than 10 ps recording length could be obtained at European XFEL - a performance that could not be realized using classical spectrally-decoded electro-optic detection. The novel line detector KALYPSO has been developed for the measurement of one-dimensional profiles at high-repetition-rate free-electron lasers (FELs) and synchrotron radiation facilities. The current version has 256 pixels with a continuous data readout at a maximum frame rate of 2.7 MHz. At FLASH, KALYPSO has been utilized as photon diagnostics for monitoring pulse-resolved FEL spectra at a repetition rate of 1.0 MHz. KALYPSO is a collaborative effort between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Lodz University of Technology (TUL-DMCS) and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)., Free-electron lasers (FELs) based on superconducting accelerator technology and storage ring facilities operate with bunch repetition rates in the MHz range, and the need arises for bunch-by-bunch electron and photon diagnostics. For photon-pulse-resolved measurements of spectral distributions, fast one-dimensional profile monitors are required. The linear array detector KALYPSO (KArlsruhe Linear arraY detector for MHz-rePetition rate SpectrOscopy) has been developed for electron bunch or photon pulse synchronous read-out with frame rates of up to 2.7 MHz. At the FLASH facility at DESY, a current version of KALYPSO with 256 pixels has been installed at a grating spectrometer as online diagnostics to monitor the pulse-resolved spectra of the high-repetition-rate FEL pulses. Application-specific front-end electronics based on MicroTCA standard have been developed for data acquisition and processing. Continuous data read-out with low latency in the microsecond range enables the integration into fast feedback applications. In this paper, pulse-resolved FEL spectra recorded at 1.0 MHz repetition rate for various operation conditions at FLASH are presented, and the first application of an adaptive feedback for accelerator control based on photon beam diagnostics is demonstrated.

For a beam-based feedback control of the linear accelerator, electro-optical bunch arrival-time monitors are deployed, achieving a time resolution better than 3 fs. In a first attempt, we recently demonstrated a beam-based feedback system, reducing the arrival time jitter of the electron bunches to the 10 fs level with stable operation over hours. For pump-probe experiments it is crucial to equally verify this new level of precision in the FEL pulse arrival time with independent methods. The L-band superconducting technology allows accelerating fields of up to 0.8 ms in length at a repetition rate of 10 Hz (burst mode). A fast kicker-septum system picks one part of the 1 MHz electron bunch train and kicks it to the second beamline such that two beamlines are operated simultaneously with the full repetition rate of 10 Hz. The photoinjector operates three laser systems. They have different pulse durations and transverse shapes and are chosen to serve best for the given user experiment in terms of electron bunch charge, bunch compression, and bunch pattern. The novel linear array detector KALYPSO has been developed for beam diagnostics based on 1-dimensional profile measurements at high-repetition rate free-electron lasers (FEL) and synchrotron radiation facilities. The current version of KALYPSO has 256 pixels with a maximum frame rate of 2.7~MHz. The detector board, which comprises the radiation sensor, analog signal amplification, and analog-to-digital signal conversion, has been designed as a mezzanine card that can be plugged onto application-specific carrier boards for data pre-processing and transmission. Either a Si or InGaAs sensor can be mounted for the detection of visible or near infrared radiation. For this to be achieved electron bunches must be reliably produced within very tight tolerances. In order to investigate the presence of micro-bunching, i.e. charge density variation along the electron bunch with features in the micron range, a prism-based NIR spectrometer with an InGaAs sensor, sensitive in the wavelength range 900 nm to 1700 nm was installed. The spectrometer utilizes diffraction radiation (DR) generated at electron beam energies of up to 17.5 GeV. The MHz repetition rate needed for bunch resolved measurements is made possible by the KALYPSO line detector system, providing a read-out rate of up to 2.7 MHz. We present the first findings from commissioning of the NIR spectrometer, and measurements on the impact of the laser heater system for various bunch compression settings, in terms of amplitude and bunch-to-bunch variance of the NIR spectra as well as FEL pulse energy., Published by JACoW Publishing, Geneva, Switzerland

The system is capable of recording individual longitudinal bunch profiles with sub-picosecond resolution at a bunch repetition rate of 1.13MHz . Bunch lengths and arrival times of entire bunch trains with single-bunch resolution have been measured as well as jitter and drifts for consecutive bunch trains. In addition, we are testing a second electro-optical detection strategy, the so-called photonic time-stretching, which consists of imprinting the electric field of the bunch onto a chirped laser pulse, and then 'stretching' the output pulse by optical means. As a result, we obtain is a slowed down 'optical replica' of the bunch shape, which can be recorded using a photodiode and GHz-range acquisition. These tests are performed in parallel with the existing spectral decoding technique based on a spectrometer in order to allow a comparative study. The new insertion device beamlines in the PETRAIII extension project are arranged in three new sector types. Following will present the designs of the photon beamlines frontends for these sectors. The designs are based on the original design concept developed for the photon beamline frontends at PETRAIII. The aim of this generic approach was to minimize the number of specialized components for all beamlines. The existing girder concept allows a fast and reliable installation phase. The newly designed frontends aimed at using the same proven components and minimizing of the number of girder variations. There will be 4 new sectors with two undulator IDs in each sector. The canting angle between the undulators has been increased from 5mrad to 20mrad in difference to the generic beamlines. Additionally, two of the straight sections are modified. One straight section will be transformed in a side station sector with a 1mrad canting angle. The other straight section with the 40m long damping wiggler will be used as a single beamline with a hard X-ray source. Presented solution is based on the compact 2U MTCA.4 crate integrating sensor and actuator cards. The optical beam position sensor is based on quadrupole SI PIN photodiode connected to low cost AMC based FMC carrier equipped with ADC card. The optical beam position correction is done using picomotorized stages equipped with active piezo elements and high voltage RTM piezo driver. The data processing and digital feedback units are implemented using Spartan 6 FPGA. The control algorithm has been optimized for low latency and high precision computations. The control electronics performance has been tested using single beam line test stand consisted of commercial laser diode drivers, supported optics and motorized stages. The acquisition rate of commercially available line array detectors is a bottleneck for beam diagnostics at high-repetition rate machines like synchrotron lightsources or FELs with a quasi-continuous or macro-pulse operation. In order to remove this bottleneck we have developed KALYPSO, an ultra-fast linear array detector operating at a frame-rate of up to 2.7 Mfps. The KALYPSO detector mounts InGaAs or Si linear array sensors to measure radiation in the near-infrared or visible spectrum. The FPGA-based read-out card can be connected to an external data acquisition system through a high-performance PCI-Express 3.0 data-link, allowing continuous data taking and real-time data analysis. The detector is fully synchronized with the timing system of the accelerator and other diagnostic instruments. The detector is currently installed at several accelerators: ANKA, the European XFEL and TELBE. The program of low charge mode of operation is under development at free electron laser FLASH aiming in single mode radiation pulses. A short pulse photoinjector laser has been installed at FLASH allowing production of ultrashort electron pluses with moderate compression factor of the beam formation system. Here we present pilot results of free electron laser FLASH operating at the wavelength of 13.1 nm and driven by 70 pC electron bunches. The free-electron laser facility FLASH at DESY (Hamburg, Germany) operates two undulator beamlines simultaneously. Both undulator beamlines are driven by a common linear superconducting accelerator with a beam energy of up to 1.25 GeV. The superconducting technology allows the acceleration of trains of several hundred microsecond spaced bunches with a repetition rate of 10 Hz. A fast kickers-septum system is installed to distribute one part of the electron bunch train to FLASH1 and the other part to FLASH2 keeping the full 10 Hz repetition rate for both beamlines. In order to deliver different beam properties to each beamline, the FLASH photoinjector uses two independent laser systems to generate different bunch pattern and bunch charges. One laser serves the FLASH1 beamline, the other the FLASH2 beamline. A new compact versatile linear accelerator named FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac Und Test Experiment) is currently under construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It will serve as an accelerator test facility and allow conducting a variety of accelerator physics studies. In addition, it will be used to generate intense, ultra-short THz pulses for photon science experiments. FLUTE consists of a ~7 MeV photo-injector gun, a ~41 MeV S-band linac and a D-shaped chicane to compress bunches to a few femtoseconds. The poster presents an ultra-fast linear camera designed for use in high-energy physics experiments. The device will be presented in context of building the spectrometer for longitudinal beam charge profiling utilizing the electo-optic effect.

High voltage RTM Piezo Driver has been developed to support special diagnostic applications foreseen for XFEL facility. The RTM is capable of driving 4 piezo actuators with voltages up to ±80 V. The solid-state power amplifiers are driven using 18-bit DACs and sampling rates of 1 MSPS. The bandwidth of the driver is remotely tunable using programmable low pass filters. The 4-channel Piezo Driver unit provides the information of piezo output voltage and current. Three independent test setups have been built to test 4-channel Piezo Driver performance. In the paper we are presenting EOD laser lock to 1.3 GHz FLASH master oscillator using bipolar piezo stretcher (fine tuning). The piezo motor based course tuning has been applied for the long term laser stability measurements. The unipolar piezo actuator operation has been demonstrated for the Origami Onefive laser locked to 1.3 GHz LAB MO. A MicroTCA.4 (MTCA.4) compliant Piezo Driver (DRTM-PZT4)* has been developed to drive piezoelectric-based actuators used in accelerator instrumentation applications. More specifically, it is used for superconducting cavities fine tuning, synchronization of pulsed lasers and stabilization of fiber links. This paper briefly presents the designed system requirements and discusses the main hardware issues. The Piezo Driver performance measurements are also discussed. The first results of the prototype hardware usage for laser locking** to an external RF source and fiber link stabilization are summarized., Proceedings of the 5th Int. A new compact linear accelerator FLUTE is currently under construction at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with DESY and PSI. It aims at obtaining femtosecond electron bunches (~1fs - 300 fs) with a wide charge range (1 pC - 3 nC) and requires a precise bunch length diagnostic system. Here we present the layout of a bunch length monitor based on the electro-optic technique of spectral decoding using an Yb-doped fiber laser system (central wavelength 1030 nm) and a GaP crystal. Simulations of the electro-optic signal for different operation modes of FLUTE were performed and main challenges are discussed in this talk. ANKA is the first storage ring in the world with a near-field single-shot electro-optical (EO) bunch profile monitor. The method of electro-optical spectral decoding (EOSD) uses the Pockels effect to modulate the longitudinal electron bunch profile onto a long, chirped laser pulse passing through an EO crystal. The laser pulse is then analyzed with a single-shot spectrometer and from the spectral modulation, the temporal modulation can be extracted. The setup has a sub-ps resolution (granularity) and can measure down to bunch lengths of 1.5 ps RMS for bunch charges as low as 30 pC. With this setup it is possible to study longitudinal beam dynamics (e. g. microbunching) occurring during ANKA's low-alpha-operation, an operation mode with compressed bunches to generate coherent synchrotron radiation in the THz range. In addition to measuring the longitudinal bunch profile, long-ranging wake-fields trailing the electron bunch can also be studied, revealing bunch-bunch interactions.

Optical laser have become an integral part of free-electron laser facilities for the purposes of electron bunch generation, external seeding, diagnostics and pump-probe experiments. The ultra-short electron bunches demand a high timing stability and precision synchronization of the optical lasers. In this paper, we present the proof-of-principle for a laser locking application implemented on a MTCA.4 platform. The system design relies on existing MTCA.4 compliant off-the-shelf modules that are available on the market or have been developed for other applications within the particle accelerator community. Besides performance and cost, we also tried to minimize the number of out-of-crate components. Preliminary measurements of laser locking at the FLASH and REGAE particle accelerators are presented, and an outlook for further system development in the area of laser-to-RF synchronization is given.

Free-electron lasers, like FLASH and the upcoming European XFEL, are capable of producing XUV and X-ray pulses of a few femtoseconds duration. For time-resolved pump-probe experiments and the externally seeded operation mode it is crucial not only to stabilize the arrival time of the electron bunches, but also to achieve a synchronization accuracy of external lasers on the same timescale. This can only be realized with a laser-based synchronization infrastructure. At FLASH, a periodic femtosecond laser pulse train is transmitted over actively stabilized optical fibers to the critical subsystems. In this paper we report on the present status and performance of the system, as well as its imminent upgrades and new installations. These include the connection of FLASH2, electron bunch arrival time monitors for low charges, a new master laser pulse distribution scheme, all-optical synchronization of the pump-probe laser and arrival time measurements of the UV pulses on the e-gun photocathode. Along with the coming connection of the acceleration modules to the master laser and the switch of the low-level hardware to the uTCA platform, an outlook to improved feedback strategies is given.

The Optical Replica Synthesizer (ORS) section at the Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) was constructed to make longitudinal electron bunch profile measurements and to diagnose the stability of the synchronization of the electron beam and the sFLASHHigh Harmonic Generation (HHG) laser system. The section enables the co-propagation of an electron bunch and a laser pulse through a sequence of magnetic components: undulator, chicane, undulator, chicane.There are several ways that this section could be used that have not yet been attempted. These include: Echo Enabled Harmonic Generation (EEHG), beam slicing with a few-cycle laser pulse, a new type of Electro Optical Sampling (EOS) with Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG), and a new form of optical replica experiment which measures the changes in the spectrum and profile of the laser beam directly after the first ORS undulator. This paper aims to introduce the design and limitations of these experiments and to specify the items that can be installed in order to make them happen.

In the framework of the SwissFEL project, an alternative electron source to an RF photo-gun was investigated. It consists of a high voltage (up to 500 kV), high gradient pulsed diode system followed by single stage RF acceleration at 1.5 GHz. The electrons are produced from photo-cathodes or from field emitter arrays. The final goal of this accelerator is to produce a 200 pC electron beam with a projected normalized emittance below 0.4 mm.mrad and a bunch length of less than 10 ps. In the framework of the SwissFEL activities at PSI we developed a powerful UV laser system delivering wavelength-tunable pulses at a central wavelength varying from 260 to 283 nm. The laser system based on a ultra-stable frequency-trippled Ti:sapphire amplifier delivers mJ pulse energy within a duration of 1-10 ps with 1.5 nm spectral width. Temporal flattop pulses are achieved by direct UV shaping with a UV Dazzler and a prism-based stretcher. The system is used to explore thermal emittance and quantum efficiency dependence on photon energy from metallic photo-cathode (Cu and Mo). With pepperpot techniques we have measured the predicted theoretical limit for thermal emittance (0.4 mm.mrad / mm rms laser spot size at 283 nm and 0.6 mm.mrad / mm at 263 nm) for metallic photocathodes., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan
