Discrete spatial solitons traveling along the interface between two dissimilar one-dimensional arrays of waveguides were observed for the first time. Two interface solitons were found theoretically, each one with a peak in a different boundary channel. One evolves into a soliton from a linear mode at an array separation larger than a critical separation where-as the second soliton always exhibits a power threshold. These solitons exhibited different power thresholds which depended on the characteristics of the two lattices. For excitation of single channels near and at the boundary, the evolution behavior with propagation distance indicates that the solitons peaked near and at the interface experience an attractive potential on one side of the boundary, and a repulsive one on the opposite side. The power dependence of the solitons at variable distance from the boundary was found to be quite different on opposite sides of the interface and showed evidence for soliton switching between channels with increasing input power.

Soliton switching in nonlinear directional couplers implemented in photonic crystal fibers (PCF) examined here. A vector finite element method (FEM) has been developed to precisely calculate the dispersion along with coupling length of the guided modes. The PCF coupler geometry was carefully designed so that it can support soliton pulses. Soliton switching is demonstrated numerically at 1.55 microm for 100 femto-second (fs) pulses. Our theoretical results explain some of the key spectral features previously observed in the experiment.

We have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the power threshold of discrete Kerr surface solitons at the interface between a discrete one-dimensional (1D) (waveguide array) and a continuous 1D (slab waveguide) AlGaAs medium. Decreasing power thresholds were predicted and measured for soliton trapping at sites with increasing distance from the boundary. The thresholds approached asymptotically the power required for a discrete soliton of equivalent width in an infinite lattice. The minimum threshold coincided with a minimum in the interchannel coupling strength.

We have studied theoretically and experimentally the properties of optical surface modes at the hetero-interface between two meta-materials. These meta-materials consisted of two 1D AlGaAs waveguide arrays with different band structures.

We report the first experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons at the boundaries (edges or corners) of a finite optically induced photonic lattice. Both in-phase and gap nonlinear surface self-trapped states were observed under single-site excitation conditions. Our experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

We report the first observation of enhanced third-order nonlinear effects in AlGaAs nanowires. AlGaAs nanowaveguides with widths varying from 100 to 600nm were fabricated and characterized. Nonlinear phase shifts of approximately pi were experimentally observed at 1.55mum with peak powers of 30-40W in 600mum long, 550nm wide guides.

We study theoretically nonlinear surface waves in optical lattices and show that solitons can exist at the heterointerface between two different semi-infinite 1D waveguide arrays, as well as at the boundaries of a 2D nonlinear lattice. The existence and properties of these surface soliton solutions are investigated in detail.

We report the first observation of discrete quadratic surface solitons in self-focusing and defocusing periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide arrays. By operating on either side of the phase-matching condition and using the cascading nonlinearity, both in-phase and staggered discrete surface solitons were observed. This represents the first experimental demonstration of staggered/gap surface solitons at the interface of a semi-infinite nonlinear lattice. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with theory.

We demonstrate all-optical switching at 1550 nm between two weakly coupled cores in a photonic crystal fiber for intensities up to 0.5 TW/cm2. Spectrum analysis at higher intensities reveals that the output was dominated by continuum generation primarily towards shorter wavelengths.

We report the first observation of discrete optical surface solitons at the interface between a nonlinear self-focusing waveguide lattice and a continuous medium. The effect of power on the localization process of these optical self-trapped states at the edge of an AlGaAs waveguide array is investigated in detail. Our experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

We have observed the incoherent interaction between a highly confined (blocker) soliton and wide, moving signal beams of a different wavelength in a one-dimensional discrete Kerr medium. Digital switching of the blocker solitons to successive adjacent channels was measured with increasing signal power via both one and two cascaded interactions in an AlGaAs waveguide array, operations equivalent to a reconfigurable three-output router.

It is theoretically shown that discrete nonlinear surface waves are possible in waveguide lattices. These self-trapped states are located at the edge of the array and can exist only above a certain power threshold. The excitation characteristics and stability properties of these surface waves are systematically investigated.

We report the first observation of discrete Talbot revivals in one-dimensional waveguide arrays. Unlike continuous systems where the Talbot self-imaging effect always occurs irrespective of the pattern period, in discrete configurations this process is only possible for a specific set of periodicities. Recurrence of different input periodic patterns is observed in good agreement with theory.

We observe highly localized solitons in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide arrays close to phase matching for second-harmonic generation. With fundamental and second-harmonic input in one channel the response indicates two distinguishable propagation schemes. Depending on the relative phase between the two input waves, a self-trapped beam emerges, resembling closely either the in- or the out-of-phase quadratic eigenmode of a single waveguide. A stable soliton propagates when the input waves are in phase.

We investigate experimentally and numerically the interaction of a highly localized, single-channel discrete soliton (blocker) with a wide, tilted beam in a one-dimensional AlGaAs array. In agreement with theory the blocker is observed to discretely shift its position by multiple channels, depending on the intensity and relative phase of the tilted beam.

We have investigated the interaction between two dissipative spatial solitons of different frequencies in periodically patterned semiconductor optical amplifiers. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory. Simulations suggest that multiwavelength interactions do not produce stable bound solitons unless the system's modeling equations are completely symmetric.

We demonstrate phase-insensitive, ultrafast, all-optical spatial switching and frequency conversion in quadratically nonlinear waveguide arrays in periodically poled lithium niobate. Routing of milliwatt signals with wavelengths in the communication band (1550 nm) is achieved without pulse distortions by parametric interaction with a control beam with 10-W power and wavelengths near 775 nm.

Discrete solitons with two frequency components mutually locked by a quadratic nonlinearity have been observed for the first time. Optical experiments have been performed in arrays of coupled channel waveguides with tunable cascaded quadratic nonlinearity. The tunability was the prerequisite that soliton species with different topology could be identified in the same array. Moreover, soliton stability has been experimentally probed. Good agreement with theoretical predictions was found.

We report our investigation of Kerr nonlinear beam interactions in discrete systems. The influence of power and the relative phase between two Gaussian shaped beams was investigated in detail by performing numerical simulations of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation and comparing the results with experiments done in AlGaAs waveguide arrays. Good agreement between theory and experiment was obtained.

We report the first experimental observation of modulation instability in a discrete optical nonlinear array.

We show that discrete dissipative optical lattice solitons are possible in waveguide array configurations that involve periodically patterned semiconductor optical amplifiers and saturable absorbers. The characteristics of these low-power soliton states are investigated, and their propagation constant eigenvalues are mapped on Floquet-Bloch band diagrams. The prospect of observing such low-power dissipative lattice solitons is discussed in detail.

The advantage for quadratic soliton generation of engineering the quasi-phase-matching period near the input of lithium niobate slab waveguides is demonstrated. This approach allows members of one-dimensional quadratic soliton families with different values of the wave-vector mismatch to be cleanly excited and to be characterized by quantitative intensity-profile measurements of both the fundamental and the second-harmonic soliton components.

We report observation of the interaction between two coherent dissipative spatial solitons in a periodically patterned semiconductor optical amplifier with power levels of tens of milliwatts. The interactions are nonlocal and phase dependent and exhibit surprising features, such as soliton birth. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations.

We have observed for the first time stable spatial solitons in semiconductor optical amplifiers. Soliton destabilization due to the growth of background noise was suppressed by using patterned electrodes on the device. Numerical simulations fit very well with the experiment results. We show that it is possible to excite these solitons with about 60 mW input power.

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the creation of a third soliton in two soliton collision processes in type I noncritically phase-matched KNbO3. The output pattern in the collision process is phase dependent, but the total energy and the relative ratio of the fundamental to the second harmonic in each soliton remain essentially unchanged to within experimental accuracy.

We report the experimental observation of the formation of multiple optical quadratic solitons in a process mediated by the amplification of minute asymmetries in the diffraction properties of the input light. Experiments were conducted in phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a bulk crystal of periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate pumped at 1064 nm. The different mechanisms that influence the process were investigated numerically, and the pulsed nature of the pump light was found to play a key role in the observed light distributions.

The existence of stable dissipative spatial solitons at low intensities in patterned electrode semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is predicted theoretically. In contrast to conventional SOAs, this system may support stable solitons because the inherent saturating losses provide subcritical bifurcations for both the plane-wave and the soliton solution.

Stationary quadratic solitons associated with second harmonic generation in optically anisotropic media have been investigated both numerically and analytically using the variational approach. The solitons were found to have elliptical shapes, both for the fundamental and second harmonic, and their approximate beam waists and amplitudes as a function of the anisotropy and the soliton parameter were found. The important limits of anisotropic diffraction were compared to the well-known model of isotropic diffraction. The stability of anisotropic solitons was addressed via the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion and the regions of parameter space for which the solitons are stable were identified. Direct numerical simulations of the coupled field equations were performed to illustrate the existence, stability, and ellipticity of anisotropic quadratic solitons. In general, good agreement was found between approximate analytical approaches and numerical experiments.

We have investigated the amplification of a spatially periodic perturbation applied to a wide fundamental beam launched near phase matching for second-harmonic generation in a lithium niobate film waveguide. We measured the gain coefficient for the modulational instability of quadratic eigenmodes as a function of periodicity, intensity, and wave-vector mismatch. Excellent agreement with theory was obtained.

We report an experimental study of the breakup through modulational instability of broad fundamental beams near the phase-matching condition for second-harmonic generation in lithium niobate slab waveguides. Two mechanisms for initiating modulational instability, waveguide imperfections and noise on the input beam, are identified.

We report what is to our knowledge the first experimental evidence of nonlinear beam displacement in a strip-loaded GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well waveguide with an asymmetric, nonlinear cladding. An intensity-dependent spatial displacement of ~2 mum was observed for the guided mode at a wavelength of 1.55 mum. Numerical simulations that correspond to the experiment are also presented. The device has the potential of providing a soliton-emission-based, ultrafast all-optical switch.

The wavelength dependence of the one-photon absorption-induced photodegradation rate has been measured from the visible to the near IR for a variety of electro-optic chromophore-doped polymers. Systematic behavior is identified. The lifetime of the electro-optic activity is found to increase exponentially over 4-6 orders of magnitude for wavelengths ranging from peak of absorption, typically in the visible, to ~1000 nm. Many popular chromophores developed for electro-optics over the past 10 years are compared.

The near-infrared absorption of two chromophore functionalized polymers and combinations of seventeen different guest chromophores in seven different organic polymer matrices were investigated to assess the effect of chromophore structure and environment on absorption. The near-infrared absorption losses were found to be dramatically larger by as much as 2-3 orders of magnitude in polymer matrices than in solution. Furthermore, the absorption of the long-wavelength tail appears to be related to the glass transition temperature of the polymer matrix that contains the chromophore. These results are interpreted in terms of inhomogeneous broadening.

The photodegradation of the azobenzene chromophore DR1 {4-[N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-4(?)-nitroazobenzene]} incorporated as a side chain or as a guest in a poly(methyl) methacrylate host has been evaluated as a function of wavelength, temperature, and the atmospheric environment. The effects of these variables on the lifetime of DR1-based electro-optic devices is quantified.

Spatial solitons, beams that do not spread owing to diffraction when they propagate, have been demonstrated to exist by virtue of a variety of nonlinear self-trapping mechanisms. Despite the diversity of these mechanisms, many of the features of soliton interactions and collisions are universal. Spatial solitons exhibit a richness of phenomena not found with temporal solitons in fibers, including effects such as fusion, fission, annihilation, and stable orbiting in three dimensions. Here the current state of knowledge on spatial soliton interactions is reviewed.

Nonlinear wave propagation was investigated experimentally in coupled waveguides by means of the cascaded nonlinearity in quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation. With a specially designed wave-vector-mismatch distribution along the propagation axis, cascading was optimized for low fundamental depletion. High-contrast, ultrafast all-optical switching with switching powers of tens of watts was observed.

The properties of one-dimensional quadratic walking solitons were investigated in planar lithium niobate waveguides near the type I phase-matching condition for second-harmonic generation. Wave propagation was studied under different conditions of phase matching, walk-off angle, and incident fundamental power.

We demonstrate experimentally that spatial solitons in AlGaAs slab waveguides can be deflected by an electronically induced prism. We also show that a weak signal beam can be guided and steered by the solitons, thus demonstrating the feasibility of a dynamically reconfigurable optical interconnect.

Spatial soliton formation in the bulk single-crystal polydiacetylene para-toulene sulfonate has been studied experimentally. The unique nonlinearity of this material at 1600 nm leads to stable solitons below an intensity maximum, and for higher intensities the input beams form a ring and a soliton.

Strong four-photon absorption corresponding to Im[x((7)) (-?; ?, -?, ?, -?, ?, -?, ?)] has been measured for the first time to the authors' knowledge with 100-fs pulses at 1600 nm in the single-crystal polymer poly[bis (p-toluene sulfonate)] of 2, 4-hexadiyne-1, 6-diol. The transition involved is from the even-symmetry ground state into the vibronic subband of the dominant, even-symmetry, excited two-photon state at an energy of 2.7 eV.

The evolution of a strip (one-dimensional) fundamental beam with propagation distance owing to spatial modulational instabilities was analyzed in a quadratic medium near type I phase matching. We obtained the gain coefficient for the modulational instability and showed that the wave evolves into a clean periodic sequence of solitary waves and does not reproduce the incident beam.

It was shown experimentally for type II second-harmonic generation in KTP that the family of quadratic spatial solitons exists over a wide range of imbalances for the two fundamental wave inputs. The threshold for soliton formation was measured as a function of both phase mismatch and relative input fraction of the energy in the two fundamental polarizations. Launching unequal fundamental inputs led to an imbalanced three-coupled-field output composition.

Two-dimensional quadratic spatial solitons were generated experimentally near phase-matching conditions for type II frequency doubling in KTP by the seeding of a strong second-harmonic field with a weak input at the fundamental wavelength. The self-trapped beams were shown to be insensitive to the energy, phase, and polarization of the fundamental-frequency seed input beam.

The interaction between two one-dimensional quadratic solitons has been investigated experimentally in lithium niobate planar waveguides for both parallel- and crossing-launched solitons.

Garito and co-workers have suggested a mechanism to dramatically increase the second hyperpolarizability, gamma, in linear pi-electron-conjugated molecules. Polarization is introduced that leads to a difference between the dipole moments of the molecule's ground state and excited state. Here a series of carotenoids was examined that had increasing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the polyenic chain to the acceptor moiety in the ground state, and gamma was measured for these compounds as a function of wavelength by third-harmonic generation. The compound with the greatest ICT exhibited a 35-fold enhancement of gammamax (the gamma measured at the peak of the three-photon resonance) relative to the symmetric molecule beta-carotene, which itself has one of the largest third-order nonlinearities known. Stark spectroscopic measurements revealed the existence of a large difference dipole moment, Delta mu, between the ground and excited state. Quantum-chemical calculations underline the importance of interactions involving states with large Delta mu.
