In the present-day universe, the most massive galaxies are ellipticals located in the cores of galaxy clusters, harboring the heaviest super-massive black holes (SMBHs). However the mechanisms that drive the early growth phase and subsequent transformation of these morphology and kinematics of galaxies remain elusive. Here we report (sub)kiloparsec scale observations of stars, gas, and dust in ADF22.A1, a bright dusty starburst galaxy at z=3.1, hosting a heavily obscured active galactic nucleus and residing in a proto-cluster core. ADF22.A1 is a giant spiral galaxy with the kinematics of a rotating disk with rotation velocity Vrot=530+/-10km/s and diameter larger than 30 kpc. The high specific stellar angular momentum of this system, j*=3400+/-600 kpc km/s, requires a mechanism to effectively spin-up ADF22.A1, indicating the importance of accretion from the cosmic web to supply both gas and angular momentum to galaxies in their early gas-rich starburst phase. In its inner region, gas flows along dust lanes in a bar connected with the bright dusty core and the estimated mass ratio of a bulge to SMBH matches the local relation, suggesting that bars are a key mechanism to shape the early co-evolution of these components. Comparison with cosmological simulations shows that ADF22.A1 will likely evolve into a massive elliptical at the present day, experiencing a significant reduction in angular momentum associated with subsequent galaxy mergers., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. accepted for publication in PASJ

Cosmological simulations predict the Universe contains a network of intergalactic gas filaments, within which galaxies form and evolve. However, the faintness of any emission from these filaments has limited tests of this prediction. We report the detection of rest-frame ultraviolet Lyman-alpha radiation from multiple filaments extending more than one megaparsec between galaxies within the SSA 22 proto-cluster at a redshift of 3.1. Intense star formation and supermassive black-hole activity is occurring within the galaxies embedded in these structures, which are the likely sources of the elevated ionizing radiation powering the observed Lyman-alpha emission. We present the Hubble Deep UV Legacy Survey (HDUV), a 132 orbit imaging program with the WFC3/UVIS camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HDUV extends and builds on the few previous UV imaging surveys in the two GOODS/CANDELS-Deep fields to provide deep images over a total area of ~100 arcmin2 in the two filters F275W and F336W. Our release also includes all the F275W imaging data taken by the CANDELS survey, which were aligned using a novel approach and combined with the HDUV survey data. By reaching depths of 27.5-28.0 mag (5sigma, in 0.4" apertures), these are the deepest high-resolution UV data over such a large area taken to date. Such unique UV imaging enables a wide range of science by the community. Among the main goals of the HDUV survey are: (1) provide a complete sample of faint star-forming galaxies at z~1-3, (2) constrain the ionizing photon escape fraction from galaxies at z~2-3, and (3) track the build-up of bulges and the disappearance of clumpy disk galaxies through reliable internal stellar population properties at sub-kpc resolution out to z~3. The addition of the HDUV data further enhances the legacy value of the two GOODS/CANDELS-Deep fields, which now include deep 11-band HST imaging as well as very deep ancillary data from X-ray to radio, enabling unique multi-wavelength studies. We present results of a deep spectroscopic survey designed to quantify the statistics of the escape of ionizing photons from star-forming galaxies at z~3. We measure the ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density _obs, where f900 is the mean flux density evaluated over the range [880,910] A. We quantify the emergent ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density by analyzing high-S/N composite spectra formed from sub-samples with common observed properties and numbers sufficient to reduce the statistical uncertainty in the modeled IGM+CGM correction to obtain precise values of _out, including a full-sample average _out=$0.057\pm0.006$. We further show that _out increases monotonically with Ly$\alpha$ rest equivalent width, inducing an inverse correlation with UV luminosity as a by-product. We fit the composite spectra using stellar spectral synthesis together with models of the ISM in which a fraction f_c of the stellar continuum is covered by gas with column density N(HI). We show that the composite spectra simultaneously constrain the intrinsic properties of the stars (L900/L1500)_int along with f_c, N(HI), E(B-V), and $f_{esc,abs}$, the absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons. We find a sample-averaged $f_{esc,abs} =0.09\pm0.01$, and that subsamples fall along a linear relation $\langle f_{esc,abs}\rangle \sim 0.75[W(Ly\alpha)/110 A]$. We use the FUV luminosity function, the distribution function $n[W(Ly\alpha)]$, and the relationship between $W(Ly\alpha)$ and _out to estimate the total ionizing emissivity of $z\sim3$ star-forming galaxies with Muv < -19.5: $\epsilon_{LyC}\sim 6\times10^{24}$ ergs/s/Hz/Mpc$^3$, exceeding the contribution of QSOs by a factor of $\sim 3$, and accounting for $\sim50$% of the total $\epsilon_{LyC}$ at $z\sim3$ estimated using indirect methods., Comment: 45 pages, 31 figures, ApJ, in press

We present six galaxies at z~2 that show evidence of Lyman continuum (LyC) emission based on the newly acquired UV imaging of the Hubble Deep UV legacy survey (HDUV) conducted with the WFC3/UVIS camera on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). At the redshift of these sources, the HDUV F275W images partially probe the ionizing continuum. By exploiting the HST multi-wavelength data available in the HDUV/GOODS fields, models of the UV spectral energy distributions, and detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the intergalactic medium absorption, we estimate the absolute ionizing photon escape fractions of these galaxies to be very high -- typically >60% (>13% for all sources at 90% likelihood). Our findings are in broad agreement with previous studies that found only a small fraction of galaxies to show high escape fraction. These six galaxies comprise the largest sample yet of LyC leaking candidates at z~2 whose inferred LyC flux has been cleanly observed at HST resolution. While three of our six candidates show evidence of hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN), two of these are heavily obscured and their LyC emission appears to originate from star-forming regions rather than the central nucleus. This suggests an AGN-aided pathway for LyC escape from these sources. Extensive multi-wavelength data in the GOODS fields, especially the near-IR grism spectra from the 3D-HST survey, enable us to study the candidates in detail and tentatively test some recently proposed indirect methods to probe LyC leakage -- namely, the [OIII]/[OII] line ratio and the H$\beta-$UV slope diagram. High-resolution spectroscopic followup of our candidates will help constrain such indirect methods which are our only hope of studying $f_{esc}$ at z~5-9 in the fast-approaching era of the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 850um continuum observations of the original Lyman-alpha Blob (LAB) in the SSA22 field at z=3.1 (SSA22-LAB01). The ALMA map resolves the previously identified submillimeter source into three components with total flux density S_850 = 1.68+/-0.06 mJy, corresponding to a star formation rate of ~150 M_sun/yr. The submillimeter sources are associated with several faint (m~27 mag) rest-frame ultraviolet sources identified in Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) clear filter imaging (~5850A). One of these companions is spectroscopically confirmed with Keck MOSFIRE to lie within 20 projected kpc and 250 km/s of one of the ALMA components. We postulate that some of these STIS sources represent a population of low-mass star-forming satellites surrounding the central submillimeter sources, potentially contributing to their growth and activity through accretion. Using a high resolution cosmological zoom simulation of a 10^13 M_sun halo at z=3, including stellar, dust and Ly-alpha radiative transfer, we can model the ALMA+STIS observations and demonstrate that Ly-alpha photons escaping from the central submillimeter sources are expected to resonantly scatter in neutral hydrogen, the majority of which is predicted to be associated with halo substructure. We show how this process gives rise to extended Ly-alpha emission with similar surface brightness and morphology to observed giant LABs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a Herschel/SPIRE survey of three protoclusters at z=2-3 (2QZCluster, HS1700, SSA22). Based on the SPIRE colours (S350/S250 and S500/S350) of 250 $\mu$m sources, we selected high redshift dusty star-forming galaxies potentially associated with the protoclusters. In the 2QZCluster field, we found a 4-sigma overdensity of six SPIRE sources around 4.5' (~2.2 Mpc) from a density peak of H$\alpha$ emitters at z=2.2. In the HS1700 field, we found a 5-sigma overdensity of eight SPIRE sources around 2.1' (~1.0 Mpc) from a density peak of LBGs at z=2.3. We did not find any significant overdensities in SSA22 field, but we found three 500 $\mu$m sources are concentrated 3' (~1.4 Mpc) east to the LAEs overdensity. If all the SPIRE sources in these three overdensities are associated with protoclusters, the inferred star-formation rate densities are 10$^3$-10$^4$ times higher than the average value at the same redshifts. This suggests that dusty star-formation activity could be very strongly enhanced in z~2-3 protoclusters. We present a combined analysis of rest-frame far-UV (1000-2000 A) and rest-frame optical (3600-7000 A) composite spectra formed from very deep observations of a sample of 30 star-forming galaxies with z=2.4+/-0.1, selected to be representative of the full KBSS-MOSFIRE spectroscopic survey. Since the same massive stars are responsible for the observed FUV continuum and the excitation of the observed nebular emission, a self-consistent stellar population synthesis model must simultaneously match the details of the far-UV stellar+nebular continuum and-- when inserted as the excitation source in photoionization models-- account for all observed nebular emission line ratios. We find that only models including massive star binaries, having low stellar metallicity (Z_*/Z_{sun} ~ 0.1) but relatively high ionized gas-phase oxygen abundances (Z_{neb}/Z_{sun} ~ 0.5), can successfully match all of the observational constraints. We argue that this apparent discrepancy is naturally explained by highly super-solar O/Fe [4-5 times (O/Fe)_{sun}], expected for gas whose enrichment is dominated by the products of core-collapse supernovae. Once the correct ionizing spectrum is identified, photoionization models reproduce all of the observed strong emission line ratios, the direct T_e measurement of O/H, and allow accurate measurement of the gas-phase abundance ratios of N/O and C/O -- both of which are significantly sub-solar but, as for O/Fe, are in remarkable agreement with abundance patterns observed in Galactic thick disk, bulge, and halo stars with similar O/H. High nebular excitation is the rule at high-z (and rare at low-z) because of systematically shorter enrichment timescales (<<1 Gyr): low Fe/O environments produce harder (and longer-lived) stellar EUV spectra at a given O/H, enhanced by dramatic effects on the evolution of massive star binaries., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures. We have acquired Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Very Large Telescope near-infrared spectra and images of supernova (SN) Refsdal after its discovery as an Einstein cross in Fall 2014. The HST light curve of SN Refsdal matches the distinctive, slowly rising light curves of SN 1987A-like supernovae (SNe), and we find strong evidence for a broad H-alpha P-Cygni profile in the HST grism spectrum at the redshift (z = 1.49) of the spiral host galaxy. SNe IIn, powered by circumstellar interaction, could provide a good match to the light curve of SN Refsdal, but the spectrum of a SN IIn would not show broad and strong H-alpha absorption. From the grism spectrum, we measure an H-alpha expansion velocity consistent with those of SN 1987A-like SNe at a similar phase. The luminosity, evolution, and Gaussian profile of the H-alpha emission of the WFC3 and X-shooter spectra, separated by ~2.5 months in the rest frame, provide additional evidence that supports the SN 1987A-like classification. In comparison with other examples of SN 1987A-like SNe, SN Refsdal has a blue B-V color and a high luminosity for the assumed range of potential magnifications. If SN Refsdal can be modeled as a scaled version of SN 1987A, we estimate it would have an ejecta mass of 20+-5 solar masses. The evolution of the light curve at late times will provide additional evidence about the potential existence of any substantial circumstellar material (CSM). We report the redshift of an unlensed, highly obscured submillimetre galaxy (SMG), HS1700.850.1, the brightest SMG (S850um =19.1 mJy) detected in the JCMT/SCUBA-2 Baryonic Structure Survey, based on the detection of its CO line emission. Using the IRAM PdBI-WIDEX with 3.6GHz band width, we serendipitously detect an emission line at 150.6 GHz. From a search over 14.5 GHz in the 3-mm and 2-mm atmospheric windows, we confirm the identification of this line as CO(5-4) at z = 2.816, meaning that it does not reside in the z~2.30 proto-cluster in this field. Measurement of the 870um source size (<0.85") from the Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA) confirms a compact emission in a S870um =14.5mJy, LIR~10^13 Lsun component, suggesting an Eddington-limited starburst. We use the double-peaked CO line profile measurements along with the SMA size constraints to study the gas dynamics of a HyLIRG, estimating the gas and dynamical masses of HS1700.850.1. While HS1700.850.1 is one of the most extreme galaxies known in the Universe, we find that it occupies a relative void in the Lyman-Break Galaxy distribution in this field. Comparison with other extreme objects at similar epochs (HyLIRG Quasars), and cosmological simulations, suggests such an anti-bias of bright SMGs could be relatively common, with the brightest SMGs rarely occupying the most overdense regions at z=2-4., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted in MNRAS

We report the blind detection of 12CO emission from a Distant Red Galaxy, HS1700.DRG55. We have used the IRAM PdBI-WIDEX, with its 3.6GHz of instantaneous dual-polarization bandwidth, to target 12CO(3--2) from galaxies lying in the proto-cluster at z=2.300 in the field HS1700+64. If indeed this line in DRG55 is 12CO(3--2), it's detection at 104.9GHz indicates a z_CO=2.296. None of the other eight known z~2.30 proto-cluster galaxies lying within the primary beam (PB) are detected in 12CO, although the limits are ~2x worse towards the edge of the PB where several lie. The optical/near-IR magnitudes of DRG55 (R_AB>27, K_AB=22.3) mean that optical spectroscopic redshifts are difficult with 10m-class telescopes, but near-IR redshifts would be feasible. The 24um-implied SFR (210 M_odot yr-1), stellar mass (~10^11 M-odot) and 12CO line luminosity (3.6x10^10 K km s-1 pc^2) are comparable to other normal 12CO-detected star forming galaxies in the literature, although the galaxy is some ~2 mag (~6x) fainter in the rest-frame UV than 12CO-detected galaxies at z>2. The detection of DRG55 in 12CO complements three other 12CO detected UV-bright galaxies in this proto-cluster from previous studies, and suggests that many optically faint galaxies in the proto-cluster may host substantial molecular gas reservoirs, and a full blind census of 12CO in this overdense environment is warranted., Comment: 5 pages, matching the proof version in MNRAS

We present initial results of a deep near-IR spectroscopic survey covering the 15 fields of the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using MOSFIRE on the Keck 1 telescope, focusing on a sample of 251 galaxies with redshifts 2.0< z < 2.6, star-formation rates 2 < SFR < 200 M_sun/yr, and stellar masses 8.6 < log(M*/M_sun) < 11.4, with high-quality spectra in both H- and K-band atmospheric windows. We show unambiguously that the locus of z~2.3 galaxies in the "BPT" nebular diagnostic diagram exhibits a disjoint, yet similarly tight, relationship between the ratios [NII]6585/Halpha and [OIII]/Hbeta as compared to local galaxies. Using photoionization models, we argue that the offset of the z~2.3 locus relative to z~ 0 is explained by a combination of harder ionizing radiation field, higher ionization parameter, and higher N/O at a given O/H than applies to most local galaxies, and that the position of a galaxy along the z~2.3 star-forming BPT locus is surprisingly insensitive to gas-phase oxygen abundance. The observed nebular emission line ratios are most easily reproduced by models in which the net ionizing radiation field resembles a blackbody with effective temperature T_eff = 50000-60000 K and N/O close to the solar value at all O/H. We critically assess the applicability of commonly-used strong line indices for estimating gas-phase metallicities, and consider the implications of the small intrinsic scatter in the empirical relationship between excitation-sensitive line indices and stellar mass (i.e., the "mass-metallicity" relation), at z~2.3., Comment: 41 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. We study the properties of luminous stellar clumps identified in deep, high resolution HST/NIC2 F160W imaging at 1.6um of six z~2 star-forming galaxies with existing near-IR integral field spectroscopy from SINFONI at the VLT. Individual clumps contribute ~0.5%-15% of the galaxy-integrated rest-frame ~5000A emission, with median of about 2%; the total contribution of clump light ranges from 10%-25%. The median intrinsic clump size and stellar mass are ~1kpc and log(Mstar[Msun])~9, in the ranges for clumps identified in rest-UV or line emission in other studies. The clump sizes and masses in the subset of disks are broadly consistent with expectations for clump formation via gravitational instabilities in gas-rich, turbulent disks given the host galaxies' global properties. By combining the NIC2 data with ACS/F814W imaging available for one source, and AO-assisted SINFONI Halpha data for another, we infer modest color, M/L, and stellar age variations within each galaxy. In these two objects, sets of clumps identified at different wavelengths do not fully overlap; NIC2-identified clumps tend to be redder/older than ACS- or Halpha-identified clumps without rest-frame optical counterparts. There is evidence for a systematic trend of older ages at smaller galactocentric radii among the clumps, consistent with scenarios where inward migration of clumps transports material towards the central regions. From constraints on a bulge-like component at radii <1-3kpc, none of the five disks in our sample appears to contain a compact massive stellar core, and we do not discern a trend of bulge stellar mass fraction with stellar age of the galaxy. We present the results of an ultradeep, narrowband imaging survey for Lyman-continuum (LyC) emission at z~3 in the SSA22a field. We employ a custom narrowband filter centered at 3640A (NB3640), which probes the LyC region for galaxies at z>3.06. We also analyze new and archival NB4980 imaging tuned to the wavelength of the Lya emission line at z=3.09, and archival broadband B, V, and R images of the non-ionizing UV continuum. Our NB3640 images contain 26 z>3.06 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) as well as a set of 130 Lya emitters (LAEs), identified by their excess NB4980 flux relative to the BV continuum. Six LBGs and 28 LAEs are detected in the NB3640 image. LBGs appear to span a range of NB3640-R colors, while LAEs appear bimodal in their NB3640-R properties. We estimate average UV to LyC flux density ratios, corrected for foreground contamination and intergalactic medium absorption, finding ^{LBG} = 11.3^{+10.3}_{-5.4}, which implies a LBG LyC escape fraction f_{esc}^{LyC} ~ 0.1, and ^{LAE} = 2.2^{+0.9}_{-0.6}. The strikingly blue LAE flux density ratios defy interpretation in terms of standard stellar population models. Assuming ^{LBG} applies down to L=0.1L*, we estimate a galaxy contribution to the intergalactic hydrogen ionization rate that is consistent with independent estimates based on the Lya forest opacity at z~3. If we assume that ^{LAE} holds at the faintest luminosities, the galaxy contribution significantly exceeds that inferred from the Lya forest. Further follow-up study of these faint LAEs is crucial, given the potentially important contribution similar objects make to the process of reionization. Using a sample of 92 UV continuum-selected, spectroscopically identified galaxies with = 2.65, all of which have been imaged in the Ly-a line with extremely deep narrow-band imaging, we examine galaxy Ly-a emission profiles to very faint surface brightness limits. The galaxies are representative of spectroscopic samples of LBGs at similar redshifts in terms of apparent magnitude, UV luminosity, inferred extinction, and star formation rate, and were selected without regard to Ly-a emission properties. We use extremely deep stacks of UV continuum and Ly-a emission line images to show that all sub-samples exhibit diffuse Ly-a emission to radii of at least 10" (80 physical kpc), including galaxies whose spectra exhibit Ly-a in net absorption. The intensity scaling, but not the surface brightness distribution, is strongly correlated with the emission observed in the central ~1". The characteristic scale length for Ly-a line emission exceeds that of the UV continuum light for the same galaxies by factors of at least 5-10, regardless of the spectral morphology of Ly-a. Including the extended Ly-a halos increases the total Ly-a flux [and rest equivalent width W_0(Lya)] by an average factor of 5. We argue that most, if not all, of the observed Ly-a emission in the diffuse halos originates in the galaxy H II regions and is scattered in our direction by H I gas in the galaxy's circum-galactic medium (CGM). We show that whether or not a galaxy is classified as a giant "Lyman-a Blob" (LAB) depends sensitively on the Ly-a surface brightness threshold reached by an observation. Accounting for diffuse Ly-a halos, all LBGs would be LABs if surveys were routinely sensitive to 10 times lower surface brightness thresholds; also, essentially all LBGs would qualify as LAEs (W_0(Lya) > 20 A)., Comment: Updated to match final version to appear in ApJ; 20 pages, 14 figures

We present deep and high-resolution HST/NIC2 F160W imaging at 1.6micron of six z~2 star-forming galaxies with existing near-IR integral field spectroscopy from SINFONI at the VLT. The unique combination of rest-frame optical imaging and nebular emission-line maps provides simultaneous insight into morphologies and dynamical properties. The overall rest-frame optical emission of the galaxies is characterized by shallow profiles in general (Sersic index n<1), with median effective radii of ~5kpc. The morphologies are significantly clumpy and irregular, which we quantify through a non-parametric morphological approach, estimating the Gini (G), Multiplicity (Psi), and M_20 coefficients. The strength of the rest-frame optical emission lines in the F160W bandpass indicates that the observed structure is not dominated by the morphology of line-emitting gas, and must reflect the underlying stellar mass distribution of the galaxies. The sizes and structural parameters in the rest-frame optical continuum and Halpha emission reveal no significant differences, suggesting similar global distributions of the on-going star formation and more evolved stellar population. While no strong correlations are observed between stellar population parameters and morphology within the NIC2/SINFONI sample itself, a consideration of the sample in the context of a broader range of z~2 galaxy types indicates that these galaxies probe the high specific star formation rate and low stellar mass surface density part of the massive z~2 galaxy population, with correspondingly large effective radii, low Sersic indices, low G, and high Psi and M_20. We present the results of spectroscopic, narrow-band and X-ray observations of a z=2.30 protocluster in the field of the QSO HS 1700+643. Using a sample of BX/MD galaxies, which are selected to be at z~2.2-2.7 by their rest-frame ultraviolet colours, we find that there are 5 protocluster AGN which have been identified by characteristic emission-lines in their optical/near-IR spectra; this represents an enhancement over the field significant at ~98.5 per cent confidence. Using a ~200 ks Chandra/ACIS-I observation of this field we detect a total of 161 X-ray point sources to a Poissonian false-probability limit of 4x10^{-6} and identify 8 of these with BX/MD galaxies. Two of these are spectroscopically confirmed protocluster members and are also classified as emission-line AGN. When compared to a similarly selected field sample the analysis indicates this is also evidence for an enhancement of X-ray selected BX/MD AGN over the field, significant at ~99 per cent confidence. Deep Lya narrow-band imaging reveals that a total of 4/123 Lya emitters (LAEs) are found to be associated with X-ray sources, with two of these confirmed protocluster members and one highly likely member. We do not find a significant enhancement of AGN activity in this LAE sample over that of the field (result significant at only 87 per cent confidence). The X-ray emitting AGN fractions for the BX/MD and LAE samples are found to be 6.9_{-4.4}^{+9.2} and 2.9_{-1.6}^{+2.9} per cent, respectively, for protocluster AGN with L_{2-10 keV}>4.6x10^{43} erg s^{-1} at z=2.30. These findings are similar to results from the z=3.09 protocluster in the SSA 22 field found by Lehmer et al. We present new results on the kinematics and spatial distribution of metal-enriched gas within 125 kpc (physical) of Lyman Break galaxies at redshifts z~2-3. In particular, we demonstrate how rest-UV galaxy spectra can be used to obtain key spatial and spectral information more efficiently than possible with QSO sightlines. After recalibrating the measurement of galaxy systemic redshifts from their UV spectra, we investigate the kinematics of galaxy-scale outflows via the strong interstellar (IS) absorption and Lya emission lines (when present), as well as their dependence on other physical properties of the galaxies. We construct a sample of 512 close (1-15 arcsec) angular pairs of z~2-3 LBGs in which the spectra background galaxies probe the circumgalactic gas surrrounding those in the foreground. The close pairs, together with spectra of the foreground galaxies themselves, sample galactocentric impact parameters b=0-125 kpc (physical) at =2.2. The ensemble provides a spatial map of cool gas as a function of galactocentric distance for a well-characterized population of galaxies. We propose a simple model that simultaneously matches the kinematics, depth, and profile shape of IS absorption and Lya emission lines, as well as the observed variation of absorption line strength (of HI, CII, CIV, SiII, SiIV) versus galactocentric impact parameter. We discuss the results of the observations in the context of "cold accretion", in which cool gas accretes via filamentary streams directly onto the central regions of galaxies. At present, we find little observational support for cool infalling material, whereas evidence supporting the large-scale effects of outflows is strong. We obtained ESI/Keck rotation curves of 10 MgII absorption selected galaxies (0.3 < z < 1.0) for which we have WFPC-2/HST images and high resolution HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT quasar spectra of the MgII absorption profiles. We perform a kinematic comparison of these galaxies and their associated halo MgII absorption. For all 10 galaxies, the majority of the absorption velocities lie in the range of the observed galaxy rotation velocities. In 7/10 cases, the absorption velocities reside fully to one side of the galaxy systemic velocity and usually align with one arm of the rotation curve. In all cases, a constant rotating thick-disk model poorly reproduces the full spread of observed MgII absorption velocities when reasonably realistic parameters are employed. In 2/10 cases, the galaxy kinematics, star formation surface densities, and absorption kinematics have a resemblance to those of high redshift galaxies showing strong outflows. We find that MgII absorption velocity spread and optical depth distribution may be dependent on galaxy inclination. To further aid in the spatial-kinematic relationships of the data, we apply quasar absorption line techniques to a galaxy (v_c=180 km/s) embedded in LCDM simulations. In the simulations, MgII absorption selects metal enriched "halo" gas out to roughly 100 kpc from the galaxy, tidal streams, filaments, and small satellite galaxies. Within the limitations inherent in the simulations, the majority of the simulated MgII absorption arises in the filaments and tidal streams and is infalling towards the galaxy with velocities between -200 < v_r < -180 km/s. The MgII absorption velocity offset distribution (relative to the simulated galaxy) spans ~200 km/s with the lowest frequency of detecting MgII at the galaxy systematic velocity., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. We present new observational determinations of the evolution of the 2-10keV X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of AGN. We utilise data from a number of surveys including both the 2Ms Chandra Deep Fields and the AEGIS-X 200ks survey, enabling accurate measurements of the evolution of the faint end of the XLF. We combine direct, hard X-ray selection and spectroscopic follow-up or photometric redshift estimates at z<1.2 with a rest-frame UV colour pre-selection approach at higher redshifts to avoid biases associated with catastrophic failure of the photometric redshifts. Only robust optical counterparts to X-ray sources are considered using a likelihood ratio matching technique. A Bayesian methodology is developed that considers redshift probability distributions, incorporates selection functions for our high redshift samples, and allows robust comparison of different evolutionary models. We find that the XLF retains the same shape at all redshifts, but undergoes strong luminosity evolution out to z~1, and an overall negative density evolution with increasing redshift, which thus dominates the evolution at earlier times. We do not find evidence that a Luminosity-Dependent Density Evolution, and the associated flattening of the faint-end slope, is required to describe the evolution of the XLF. We find significantly higher space densities of low-luminosity, high-redshift AGN than in prior studies, and a smaller shift in the peak of the number density to lower redshifts with decreasing luminosity. The total luminosity density of AGN peaks at z=1.2+/-0.1, but there is a mild decline to higher redshifts. We present the SINS survey with SINFONI of high redshift galaxies. With 80 objects observed and 63 detected, SINS is the largest survey of spatially resolved gas kinematics, morphologies, and physical properties of star-forming galaxies at z~1-3. We describe the selection of the targets, the observations, and the data reduction. We then focus on the "SINS Halpha sample" of 62 rest-UV/optically-selected sources at 1.3~10 star-forming galaxies at z~1.5-2.5, with some bias towards bluer systems compared to pure K-selected samples due to the requirement of secure optical redshift. The sample spans two orders of magnitude in stellar mass and in absolute and specific star formation rates, with median values of approximately log(M*/Msun) = 10.5, 70 Msun/yr, and 3/Gyr. The ionized gas distribution and kinematics are spatially resolved on scales ranging from 1.5 kpc for adaptive optics assisted observations to typically 4-5 kpc for seeing-limited data. The Halpha morphologies tend to be irregular and/or clumpy. About one-third are rotation-dominated yet turbulent disks, another third comprises compact and velocity dispersion-dominated objects, and the remaining galaxies are clear interacting/merging systems; the fraction of rotation-dominated systems increases among the more massive part of the sample. The Halpha luminosities and equivalent widths suggest on average roughly twice higher dust attenuation towards the HII regions relative to the bulk of the stars, and comparable current and past-averaged star formation rates. We present the modeling of SINFONI integral field dynamics of 18 star forming galaxies at z ~ 2 from Halpha line emission. The galaxies are selected from the larger sample of the SINS survey, based on the prominence of ordered rotational motions with respect to more complex merger induced dynamics. The quality of the data allows us to carefully select systems with kinematics dominated by rotation, and to model the gas dynamics across the whole galaxy using suitable exponential disk models. We obtain a good correlation between the dynamical mass and the stellar mass, finding that large gas fractions Mgas~M*) are required to explain the difference between the two quantities. We use the derived stellar mass and maximum rotational velocity Vmax from the modeling to construct for the first time the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation at z ~ 2.2. The relation obtained shows a slope similar to what is observed at lower redshift, but we detect an evolution of the zero point. We find that at z ~ 2.2 there is an offset in log(M*) for a given rotational velocity of 0.41+-0.11 with respect to the local Universe. This result is consistent with the predictions of the latest N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of disk formation and evolution, which invoke gas accretion onto the forming disk in filaments and cooling flows. This scenario is in agreement with other dynamical evidence from SINS, where gas accretion from the halo is required to reproduce the observed properties of a large fraction of the z ~ 2 galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present Ha integral field spectroscopy of well resolved, UV/optically selected z~2 star-forming galaxies as part of the SINS survey with SINFONI on the ESO VLT. Our laser guide star adaptive optics and good seeing data show the presence of turbulent rotating star forming rings/disks, plus central bulge/inner disk components, whose mass fractions relative to total dynamical mass appears to scale with [NII]/Ha flux ratio and star formation age. We propose that the buildup of the central disks and bulges of massive galaxies at z~2 can be driven by the early secular evolution of gas-rich proto-disks. High redshift disks exhibit large random motions. This turbulence may in part be stirred up by the release of gravitational energy in the rapid cold accretion flows along the filaments of the cosmic web. As a result dynamical friction and viscous processes proceed on a time scale of <1 Gyr, at least an order of magnitude faster than in z~0 disk galaxies. Early secular evolution thus drives gas and stars into the central regions and can build up exponential disks and massive bulges, even without major mergers. Secular evolution along with increased efficiency of star formation at high surface densities may also help to account for the short time scales of the stellar buildup observed in massive galaxies at z~2., Comment: accepted Astrophysical Journal, main July 8 2008

Measuring the response of the intergalactic medium to a blast of ionizing radiation allows one to infer the physical properties of the medium and, in principle, the lifetime and isotropy of the radiating source. The most sensitive such measurements can be made if the source of radiation is near the line of sight to a bright background QSO. We present results based on deep Keck/HIRES observations of the QSO triplet KP76, KP77 and KP78 at z ~2.5, with separations of 2-3 arcmin on the plane of the sky. Using accurate systemic redshifts of the QSOs from near-IR spectroscopy, we quantify the state of the IGM gas in the proximity regions where the expected ionizing flux from the foreground QSOs exceeds that of the metagalactic background by factors of 10-200, assuming constant and isotropic emission. Based on the unusual ionization properties of the absorption systems with detected HI, CIV, and OVI, we conclude that the gas has been significantly affected by the UV radiation from the nearby QSOs. Aided by observations of the galaxy density near the foreground QSOs, we discuss several effects that may explain why the transverse proximity effect has eluded most previous attempts to detect it. Our observations suggest that the luminosities of KP76 and KP77 have remained comparable to current values over timescales of, respectively, Delta t > 25 Myr and 16 Myr < Delta t < 33 Myr - consistent with typical QSO lifetimes estimated from independent, less-direct methods. We examine halo gas cross sections and covering fractions, f_c, of intermediate redshift MgII absorption selected galaxies. We computed statistical absorber halo radii, R_x, using current values of dN/dz and Schechter luminosity function parameters, and have compared these values to the distribution of impact parameters and luminosities from a sample of 37 galaxies. For equivalent widths W_r(2796) > 0.3 Ang, we find 43 < R_x < 88 kpc, depending on the lower luminosity cutoff and the slope, beta, of the Holmberg-like luminosity scaling, R \propto L^beta. The observed distribution of impact parameters, D, are such that several absorbing galaxies lie at D > R_x and several non-absorbing galaxies lie at D < R_x. We deduced f_c must be less than unity and obtain a mean of ~ 0.5 for our sample. Moreover, the data suggest halo radii of MgII absorbing galaxies do not follow a luminosity scaling with beta in the range of 0.2-0.28, if f_c= 1 as previously reported. However, provided f_c~0.5, we find that halo radii can remain consistent with a Holmberg-like luminosity relation with beta ~ 0.2 and R* = R_x/sqrt(f_c)= 110 kpc. No luminosity scaling (beta=0) is also consistent with the observed distribution of impact parameters if f_c < 0.37. The data support a scenario in which gaseous halos are patchy and likely have non-symmetric geometric distributions about the galaxies. We have explored the galaxy disk/extended halo gas kinematic relationship using rotation curves (Keck/ESI) of ten intermediate redshift galaxies which were selected by MgII halo gas absorption observed in quasar spectra. Previous results of six edge-on galaxies, probed along their major axis, suggest that observed halo gas velocities are consistent with extended disk-like halo rotation at galactocentric distances of 25-72 kpc. Using our new sample, we demonstrate that the gas velocities are by and large not consistent with being directly coupled to the galaxy kinematics. Thus, mechanisms other than co-rotation dynamics (i.e., gas inflow, feedback, galaxy-galaxy interactions, etc.) must be invoked to account for the overall observed kinematics of the halo gas. In order to better understand the dynamic interaction of the galaxy/halo/cosmic web environment, we performed similar mock observations of galaxies and gaseous halos in Lambda-CDM cosmological simulations. We discuss an example case of a z=0.92 galaxy with various orientations probing halo gas at a range of positions. We present the first comparison of the dynamical properties of different samples of z~1.4-3.4 star forming galaxies from spatially resolved imaging spectroscopy from SINFONI/VLT integral field spectroscopy and IRAM CO millimeter interferometry. Our samples include 16 rest-frame UV-selected, 16 rest-frame optically-selected and 13 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We find that restframe UV- and optically bright (K<20) z~2 star forming galaxies are dynamically similar, and follow the same velocity-size relation as disk galaxies at z~0. In the theoretical framework of rotating disks forming from dissipative collapse in dark matter halos, the two samples require a spin parameter ranging from 0.06 to 0.2. In contrast bright SMGs have larger velocity widths and are much more compact. Hence, SMGs have lower angular momenta and higher matter densities than either of the UV- or optically selected populations. This indicates that dissipative major mergers may dominate the SMGs population, resulting in early spheroids, and that the majority of UV/optically bright galaxies have evolved less violently [...]. These early disks may later evolve into spheroids via disk instabilities or mergers. We present 0.1" resolution near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of Halpha in a z=1.4781 star forming galaxy, Q2343-BM133. These observations were obtained with OSIRIS (OH Suppressing Infra-Red Imaging Spectrograph) using the W.M. Keck Observatory Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system. Halpha emission is resolved over a 0.8" (6.8 kpc) x 0.5" (4.3 kpc) region with a 0.1" spatial resolution. We find a global flux of 4.2+/-0.6x10^{-16} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2}, and detect a spatially resolved velocity gradient of ~134 km s^{-1} across the galaxy and a global velocity dispersion of 73+/-9 km s^{-1}. An upper limit of NII/Halpha < 0.12 is inferred, which implies that this galaxy is not dominated by an active galactic nucleus and has a metallicity at or below 1/2 solar metallicity. We derive a star formation rate (SFR) of 47+/-6 Msun yr^{-1}, and a dereddened SFR of 66+/-9 Msun yr^{-1}. Two-dimensional kinematics for Q2343-BM133 fit well with an inclined-disk model, with which we estimate an enclosed mass of 4.3x10^{9} Msun within 5.5 kpc. A possible merger scenario is also presented, and can not be fully ruled out. We derive a virial mass of 1.1x10^{10} Msun for a disk geometry, using the observed velocity dispersion. We present an analysis of the X-ray emission of a large sample of z~3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), based on Chandra/ACIS observations of several LBG survey fields. 24 LBGs are directly detected in the X-ray. 13 of the LBGs have optical spectroscopic signatures of AGN activity, but almost all the other X-ray detections are also likely to host an accreting black hole based on their X-ray properties. The AGN exhibit a wide range in X-ray luminosity, from weak Seyferts to bright QSOs. Optical spectroscopy identified approximately 1/3 of the X-ray detected sources as broad line QSOs, 1/3 as narrow line AGN and 1/3 as normal star forming LBGs. The fraction of X-ray detected LBGs is 3%, much lower than has been found for submm selected galaxies. 2 galaxies have X-ray luminosities, spectra and f_x/f_opt values that are consistent with emission from star formation processes and are candidate X-ray bright, pure starburst galaxies at z~3. X-ray spectral analysis of the LBGs shows a mean photon index 1.96, similar to local AGN. There is evidence for absorption in at least 40% of the objects. Significantly more absorption is evident in the narrow line AGN, consistent with AGN unification schemes. After correction for absorption the narrow and broad line objects show the same average luminosity. LBGs spectroscopically classified as normal galaxies are less luminous in X-ray indicating that the host galaxy is outshining any optical AGN signature. For the LBGs without direct detections, stacking the X-ray flux in the 2 deepest fields under consideration (the HDF-N and GWS) produced significant detections in each. The detection in the HDF-N gives an X-ray derived SFR of 42.4+/-7.8 Msolar/yr per LBG and, by comparing with the UV SFR, the implied UV extinction correction is 4.1+/-0.8. We discuss the optical and X-ray spectral properties of the sources detected in a single 200ks Chandra pointing in the Groth-Westphal Strip region. Optical identifications and spectroscopic redshifts are primarily from the DEEP2 survey. This is complemented with deeper (r~26mag) multi-waveband data (ugriz) from the Canada France Hawaii Legacy Survey to estimate photometric redshifts and to optically identify sources fainter than the DEEP2 magnitude limit (R(AB)~24.5mag). We focus our study on the 2-10keV selected sample comprising 97 sources to the limit ~8e-16erg/s/cm2, this being the most complete in terms of optical identification rate (86%) and redshift determination fraction (63%; both spectroscopic and photometric). We first construct the redshift distribution of the sample which shows a peak at z~1. This is in broad agreement with models where less luminous AGNs evolve out to z~1 with powerful QSOs peaking at higher redshift, z~2. Evolution similar to that of broad-line QSOs applied to the entire AGN population (both type-I and II) does not fit the data. We also explore the observed N_H distribution of the sample and estimate a fraction of obscured AGN (N_H>1e22) of ~48%. This is found to be consistent with both a luminosity dependent intrinsic N_H distribution, where less luminous systems comprise a higher fraction of type-II AGNs, and models with a fixed ratio 2:1 between type-I and II AGNs. We further compare our results with those obtained in deeper and shallower surveys. We argue that a luminosity dependent parametrisation of the intrinsic N_H distribution is required to account for the fraction of obscured AGN observed in different samples over a wide range of fluxes., Comment: MNRAS in press

We present 0.5" resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopy of the Ha line emission of 14 z~2 UV-selected BM/BX galaxies obtained with SINFONI at ESO/VLT. The mean Ha half-light radius r_1/2 is about 4kpc and line emission is detected over > ~20kpc in several sources. In 9 sources, we detect spatially-resolved velocity gradients, from 40 to 410 km/s over ~10kpc. The observed kinematics of the larger systems are consistent with orbital motions. Four galaxies are well described by rotating disks with clumpy morphologies and we extract rotation curves out to radii > ~10kpc. One or two galaxies exhibit signatures more consistent with mergers. Analyzing all 14 galaxies in the framework of rotating disks, we infer mean inclination- and beam-corrected maximum circular velocities v_c of 180+-90 km/s and dynamical masses of (0.5-25)x10^10 Msun within r_1/2. On average, the dynamical masses are consistent with photometric stellar masses assuming a Chabrier/Kroupa IMF but too small for a 0.1-100 Msun Salpeter IMF. The specific angular momenta of our BM/BX galaxies are similar to those of local late-type galaxies. The specific angular momenta of their baryons are comparable to those of their dark matter halos. Extrapolating from the average v_c at 10kpc, the virial mass of the typical halo of a galaxy in our sample is 10^(11.7+-0.5) Msun. Kinematic modeling of the 3 best cases implies a ratio of v_c to local velocity dispersion of order 2-4 and accordingly a large geometric thickness. We argue that this suggests a mass accretion (alternatively, gas exhaustion) timescale of ~500Myr. We also argue that if our BM/BX galaxies were initially gas rich, their clumpy disks will subsequently lose their angular momentum and form compact bulges on a timescale of ~1 Gyr. We reconsider the use of the equivalent width of CIV 1549, EW(CIV), as an indicator of the oxygen abundance in star-forming galaxies, as proposed by Heckman et al. for nearby starbursts. We refine the local calibration of EW(CIV) vs. log (O/H) by using a restricted wavelength window which minimises blending with interstellar absorption lines. When applied to the stellar component only of the complex CIV 1549 features in two high redshift galaxies with good quality spectra, MS1512-cB58 (z = 2.7268) and Q1307-BM1163 (z = 1.4105), the local calibration gives values of the oxygen abundance which are in good agreement with other metallicity determinations based on nebular emission and interstellar absorption lines. Our main conclusion is that for this method to give reliable results at high redshifts, it should only be used on data of sufficiently high spectral resolution (R > 1000) for stellar and interstellar CIV components to be clearly separated. Oxygen abundances will be systematically overestimated if the local calibration is applied to spectra of high-z galaxies obtained with the low resolving powers (R ~ 200-300) of many current wide field surveys. We present the discovery of the optical afterglow of GRB 050505 and an optical absorption spectrum obtained with the Keck I 10-m telescope. The spectrum exhibits three redshifted absorption systems with the highest, at z=4.2748, arising in the GRB host galaxy. The host absorption system is marked by a damped Ly-alpha (DLA) feature with a neutral hydrogen column density of logN(HI)=22.05+/-0.10, higher than that of any QSO-DLA detected to date, but similar to several other recent measurements from GRB spectra. In addition, we detect absorption lines from both low- and high-ionization species from which we deduce a metallicity, Z~0.06 Z_solar, with a depletion pattern that is roughly similar to that of the Galactic warm halo, warm disk, or disk+halo. More importantly, we detect strong absorption from SiII* indicating a dense environment, n_H>10^2 cm^-3, in the vicinity of the burst, with a size of about 4 pc. In addition, the CIV absorption system spans a velocity range of about 1000 km/s, which is not detected in any other absorption feature. We show that the most likely interpretation for this wide velocity range is absorption in the wind from the progenitor star. In this context, the lack of corresponding SiIV absorption indicates that the progenitor had a mass of <25 M_solar and a metallicity <0.1 Z_solar, and therefore required a binary companion to eject its hydrogen envelope prior to the GRB explosion. Finally, by extending the GRB-DLA sample to z~4.3 we show that these objects appear to follow a similar metallicity-redshift relation as in QSO-DLAs, but with systematically higher metallicities. It remains to be seen whether this trend is simply due to the higher neutral hydrogen columns in GRB-DLAs, or if it is a manifestation of different star formation properties in GRB-DLAs. We have detected Lyman-alpha emission from a damped Lyman-alpha system (DLA) that lies near the bright quasar HS1549+1919. The DLA has the same redshift as HS1549+1919 and was discovered in the spectrum of a faint QSO that lies 49" away (380 proper kpc). The emission line's luminosity, double-peaked profile, and small spatial separation from the DLA suggest that it may be fluorescent Lyman-alpha emission from gas that is absorbing the nearby QSO's radiation. If this is the case, our observations show that the DLA has a size of at least 1.5" and that the QSO's luminosity one million years ago was similar to its luminosity today. A survey for similar systems within 1' of bright QSOs would put interesting limits on the mean quasar lifetime., Comment: 6.1 pages including 4 figures; accepted for publication in the ApJ

We use the clustering of galaxies around distant active-galactic nuclei to derive an estimate of the relationship between galaxy and black hole mass that obtained during the ancient quasar epoch, at redshifts 2 <~ z <~ 3, when giant black holes accreted much of their mass. Neither the mean relationship nor its scatter differs significantly from what is observed in the local universe, at least over the ranges of apparent magnitude (16 <~ G_AB <~ 26) and black-hole mass (10^6 <~ M_BH/M_sun <~ 10^10.5) that we are able to probe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We use the clustering of galaxies around distant AGN to show with ~90% confidence that fainter AGN are longer lived. Our argument is simple: since the measured galaxy-AGN cross-correlation length r_0 ~ 5h^-1 Mpc does not vary significantly over a 10 magnitude range in AGN optical luminosity, faint and bright AGN must reside in dark matter halos with similar masses. The halos that host bright and faint AGN therefore have similar intrinsic abundances, and the large observed variation in AGN number density with luminosity reflects a change in duty cycle., Comment: 9 emulateapj pages, accepted for publication in the ApJ

Absorption-line spectroscopy of 23 background QSOs and numerous background galaxies has let us measure the spatial distribution of metals and neutral hydrogen around 1044 UV-selected galaxies at redshifts 1.8260 km/s) and produces very strong absorption lines (N_CIV >> 10^14 cm^-2) in the spectra of background objects. Absorption with an average column density of N_CIV ~ 10^14 cm^-2 extends to 80 kpc, a radius large enough to imply that most strong intergalactic CIV absorption is associated with star-forming galaxies like those in our sample. We find that the galaxy-CIV cross-correlation length increases with CIV column density and is similar to the galaxy-galaxy length (r_0 ~ 4 h^-1 Mpc) for N_CIV > 10^12.5 cm^-2. Distortions in the redshift-space galaxy-CIV correlation function on small scales may imply that some of the CIV systems have large peculiar velocities. Four of the five detected OVI absorption systems in our sample lie within 400 proper kpc of a known galaxy. Strong Lyman-a absorption is produced by the intergalactic gas within 1 h^-1 comoving Mpc of most galaxies, but for a significant minority (~1/3) the absorption is weak or absent. We were unable to identify any statistically significant differences between galaxies with weak nearby HI absorption and the rest, although galaxies with weak absorption may have higher star-formation rates. Galaxies near intergalactic CIV systems appear to reside in relatively dense environments and to have distinctive spectral energy distributions that are characterized by blue colors and young ages. We present an estimate of the space density of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at z=3. Combining deep X-ray data with Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) colour-selection in the rest-frame UV makes for highly efficient identification of AGN in a narrow redshift range (z~2.5-3.5). Using Chandra data from the Groth-Westphal Strip and the Hubble Deep Field North, we find a total of 15 X-ray detected LBGs at z~3, the majority of which are unlikely to have been identified in blanket followup surveys of X-ray detected objects. We find the comoving space density of moderate luminosity AGN at z=3 to be a factor ~10 higher than the most powerful objects. The available data are consistent with a roughly constant space density of MLAGN from z=0.5-3, and they are also consistent with a mild decline in the space density above z=1 as predicted by the luminosity-dependent density evolution models of Ueda et al. (2003). This strong AGN activity at z=3 argues against previous suggestions that the majority of black hole accretion occurs at low redshift. A further implication of our investigation is that, as far as can be determined from current data, the majority of the AGN population at z~3 are selected by the LBG dropout technique. Although this is sensitive to AGN with a UV-excess due to an accretion disk, it predominantly identifies star-forming galaxies. We present the results of a 200 ks Chandra observation of part of the Groth Strip region, using the ACIS-I instrument. We present a relatively simple method for the detection of point-sources and calculation of limiting sensitivities, which we argue is at least as sensitive and more self-consistent than previous methods presented in the literature. 158 distinct X-ray sources are included in our point-source catalogue in the ACIS-I area. The number counts show a relative dearth of X-ray sources in this region. For example at a flux limit of 1E-15 (cgs) around 20 per cent more soft band sources are detected in the HDF-N and almost 50 per cent more in the ELAIS-N1 field, which we have analysed by the same method for comparison. We find, however, that these differences are consistent with Poisson variations at 2 sigma significance, and therefore there is no evidence for cosmic variance based on these number counts alone. We determine the average spectra of the objects and find a marked difference between the soft-band selected sources, which have Gamma=1.9 typical of unobscured AGN, and the hard-band selected sources, which have Gamma=1.0. Reassuringly, the sample as a whole has a mean spectrum of Gamma=1.4\pm 0.1, the same as the X-ray background. Nonetheless, our results imply that the fraction of sources with significant obscuration is only ~25 per cent, much less than predicted by standard AGN population synthesis models. This is confirmed by direct spectral fitting, with only a handful of objects showing evidence for absorption. After accounting for absorption, all objects are consistent with mean intrinsic spectrum of Gamma=1.76 \pm 0.08, very similar to local Seyferts (abridged)., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS, in press

We present results from the Hubble Higher-z Supernova Search, the first space-based open field survey for supernovae (SNe). In cooperation with the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, we have used the Hubble Space Telescope with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to cover 300 square arcmin in the area of the Chandra Deep Field South and the Hubble Deep Field North on five separate search epochs (separated by 45 day intervals) to a limiting magnitude of z'=26. These deep observations have allowed us to discover 42 SNe in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1.6. As these data span a large range in redshift, they are ideal for testing the validity of Type Ia supernova progenitor models with the distribution of expected ``delay times,'' from progenitor star formation to SN Ia explosion, and the SN rates these models predict. Through a Bayesian maximum likelihood test, we determine which delay-time models best reproduce the redshift distribution of SNe Ia discovered in this survey. We find that models that require a large fraction of ``prompt'' (less than 2 Gyr) SNe Ia poorly reproduce the observed redshift distribution and are rejected at 95% confidence. As part of the In-Orbit Checkout activities for the Spitzer Space Telescope, the IRAC team carried out a deep observation (average integration time ~8 hours) of a field surrounding the bright QSO HS 1700+6416. This field contains several hundred z~3 Lyman-break galaxy candidates, and we report here on their mid-infrared properties, including the IRAC detection rate, flux densities and colors, and the results of fitting population synthesis models to the optical, near-infrared, and IRAC magnitudes. The results of the model-fitting show that previous optical/near-infrared studies of LBGs were not missing large, hidden old stellar populations. The LBG candidates' properties are consistent with those of massive, star-forming galaxies at z~3. Other IRAC sources in the same field have similar properties, so IRAC selection may prove a promising method of finding additional high-redshift galaxies., Comment: ApJS in press (Spitzer special issue); 13 pages, 3 figures

We present the first results of a large-scale survey, using the UV/blue sensitive LRIS-B spectrograph on the Keck I telescope, of galaxies in the redshift interval 1.4=2.20+/-0.32 and `BM' galaxies at =1.70+/-0.34; currently we have spectroscopically confirmed 749 of the former and 114 of the latter. We also present initial results of deep near-IR photometry and spectroscopy, from which we show that z~2 galaxies are significantly redder in their optical/IR colors compared to similarly UV-selected galaxies at z~3, but that the characteristics of their galaxy-scale outflows are quite similar. We illustrate by example the information which can be deduced on the stellar populations, metallicities, and kinematics of `redshift desert' galaxies from easily accessible rest-frame far-UV and rest-frame optical spectra. We present the basic data for a large ground-based spectroscopic survey for z~3 ``Lyman break galaxies'' (LBGs), photometrically selected using rest-UV colors from very deep images in 17 high Galactic latitude fields. The total survey covers an area of 0.38 square degrees, and includes 2347 photometrically-selected candidate LBGs to an apparent R_{AB} magnitude limit of 25.5. Approximately half of these objects have been observed spectroscopically using the Keck telescopes, yielding 940 redshifts with =2.96 +/- 0.29. We discuss the images, photometry, target selection, and the spectroscopic program in some detail, and present catalogs of the photometric and spectroscopic data, made available in electronic form. We present the results of a systematic study of the rest-frame UV spectroscopic properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). The database of almost 1000 LBG spectra proves useful for constructing high S/N composite spectra. The composite spectrum of the entire sample reveals a wealth of features attributable to hot stars, HII regions, dust, and outflowing neutral and ionized gas. By grouping the database according to galaxy parameters such as Lyman-alpha equivalent width, UV spectral slope, and interstellar kinematics, we isolate some of the major trends in LBG spectra which are least compromised by selection effects. We find that LBGs with stronger Lyman-alpha emission have bluer UV continua, weaker low-ionization interstellar absorption lines, smaller kinematic offsets between Lyman-alpha and the interstellar absorption lines, and lower star-formation rates. There is a decoupling between the dependence of low- and high-ionization outflow features on other spectral properties. Most of the above trends can be explained in terms of the properties of the large-scale outflows seen in LBGs. According to this scenario, the appearance of LBG spectra is determined by a combination of the covering fraction of outflowing neutral gas which contains dust, and the range of velocities over which this gas is absorbing. Higher sensitivity and spectral resolution observations are still required for a full understanding of the covering fraction and velocity dispersion of the outflowing neutral gas in LBGs, and its relationship to the escape fraction of Lyman continuum radiation in galaxies at z~3., Comment: 28 pages including 17 figures. We present the first results from a survey of the relative spatial distributions of galaxies, intergalactic neutral hydrogen, and intergalactic metals at high redshift. We obtained high-resolution spectra of 8 bright QSOs at 3.1

The DEIMOS spectrograph has now been installed on the Keck-II telescope and commissioning is nearly complete. The DEEP2 Redshift Survey, which will take approximately 120 nights at the Keck Observatory over a three year period and has been designed to utilize the power of DEIMOS, began in the summer of 2002. The multiplexing power and high efficiency of DEIMOS enables us to target 1000 faint galaxies per clear night. Our goal is to gather high-quality spectra of \~60,000 galaxies with z>0.75 in order to study the properties and large scale clustering of galaxies at z ~ 1. The survey will be executed at high spectral resolution, $R=\lambda/\Delta \lambda \approx 5000$, allowing us to work between the bright OH sky emission lines and to infer linewidths for many of the target galaxies (for several thousand objects, we will obtain rotation curves as well). The linewidth data will facilitate the execution of the classical redshift-volume cosmological test, which can provide a precision measurement of the equation of state of the Universe.
