Abstract

The present work aims to determine the source regions of carbonaceous chondrites (CM, CI, CO, CV, CK, CR, CH, CB, or C-ungrouped). We studied 38 individual asteroid families, including young and old ones, and determined their contributions to the NEO populations at metre and kilometre sizes using collisional and orbital models. Our models are in agreement with spectroscopic observations of NEOs, cosmic-ray exposure ages of meteorites, statistics of bolides, infrared emission from dust bands, composition of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), or abundance of extraterrestrial helium-3. We identified the Veritas, Polana and Eos families as the primary sources of CM/CR, CI and CO/CV/CK chondrites, respectively. Substantial contributions are also expected from CM-like K\"onig and CI-like Clarissa, Misa and Hoffmeister families. The source regions of kilometre-sized bodies are generally different. The Adeona family is by far the main source of CM-like NEOs, whereas the Polana (low-i) and Euphrosyne (high-i) families are at the origin of most CI-like NEOs. The Polana family is the likely source of both Ryugu and Bennu. We were able to link spectroscopically and dynamically several NEOs to the Baptistina family. Finally, it appears that the pre-atmospheric flux of carbonaceous chondrites at metre sizes is about the same as that of ordinary chondrites. Given the difference in fall statistics between the two groups (80\% versus 4.4\%), this implies either substantial atmospheric fragmentation of carbonaceous bodies at the level of ${\sim}0.5\,{\rm MPa}$, or destruction by thermal cracking and water desorption. 5. Differential ion mobility spectroscopy: non-invasive real-time diagnostics and therapy control in metabolic diseases

Abstract

Abstract Background Over the last few years, differential ion mobility spectroscopy (DMS) has become an important tool in medical research. There are attempts to find markers for specific diseases in exhaled air, using this technology as a non-invasive early diagnosis. Objective In the present research, exhaled air from 78 patients with known diagnosis and 39 control persons were tested with a DMS system from Sionex. Results Bronchial asthma showed a pattern of 6 characteristic points in a discriminant analysis. Patients with diagnosed hypertension showed a characteristic pattern with 4 points, hypothyroidism 2 points; increased LDL cholesterol 3 points, and type II diabetics treated with insulin 4 spots. No significant differences with respect to the control group were found in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. The DMS pattern in the tested asthmatics showed a partial change depending on different medications used. Conclusion Differential ion mobility spectroscopy offers promise as a helpful diagnostic tool.

Abstract

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 10km. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < -5; meteoroid size ≥∼1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/10km. This value is compatible with previous estimates. Finally, the first meteorite was recovered in Italy (Cavezzo, January 2020) thanks to the PRISMA network, a component of the FRIPON science project., FRIPON was initiated by funding from ANR (grant N.13- BS05-0009-03), carried by the Paris Observatory, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris-Saclay University and Institut Pythéas (LAM-CEREGE). Abstract

Rapidly tunable RF signals at high frequency (>10 GHz) with high purity is a challenge that is more and more faced with optical solutions. Optical mixing of two laser fields has extensively been studied for that purpose. However, when the two fields come from independent laser sources, their phase locking remains a tour de force. Direct generation of two optical fields with close frequency difference in a single laser, so-called dual frequency laser (DFL), greatly reduces the drifts, as the cavity is shared [1]. We here report our last achievements in the generation of Ka-band RF signal generation with DFL technology.

Abstract

International audience; FRIPON (Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network www.fripon.org) is a French project aiming to monitor the French skies 24 hours a day. FRIPON will detect meteors in order to estimate their orbit outside the atmosphere and to statistically determine possible parent bodies, as well as their trajectory inside the atmosphere to discover possible meteorites after the impact. A network of one hundred low-cost all-sky cameras is being installed all over France, coupled with radio receivers and spectroscopes. FRIPON will exploit data from other networks (seismographs, infrasound microbarometers) to increase chances of meteorite recovery and to improve the understanding of its properties. Data retrieving and analysis are automatized in order to minimize the time elapsed between meteor detection and field prospection. The project federates four research institutions although it is founded on the participation of a number of research laboratories, and cultural associations. Astronomers, geologists and engineers work together with a rich and already independently structured community of amateurs. FRIPON is a project where openness and transparency must cooperate with centralization and control, an example of the delicate balance between outreach, unavoidable to inspire proud people's involvement, and technical needs of scaling infrastructures aimed to produce valuable results.

Abstract

We report on an opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) widely tunable from 2.5 to 5.5 GHz. It is based on an Er,Yb:glass Dual-Frequency Laser operating at 1.53 μm which naturally provides an electrically-tunable beatnote. Inserted in an optical frequency-locked loop including a long fiber delay line, the laser beatnote reaches a spectral purity comparable to the one obtained with classical fixed frequency OEOs. As the oscillator scheme does not require an RF filter, the tunability is simply achieved by tuning the laser beatnote frequency. A fine optimization of the loop has allowed reaching a -27 dBc/Hz (respectively -108 dBc/Hz) phase noise power spectral density at 10 Hz (respectively 10 kHz) of the carrier with only 100 m optical fiber, this performance being independent of the frequency.

Abstract

International audience; Research on fireballs and meteorites has always been of interest to the public, due to the beauty of shooting stars in the night sky and to the extraterrestrial origin of meteorites. A fireball observation network called FRIPON [1] (Colas et al, 2015) is currently being setup, funded by ANR (Agence Nationale pour la Recherche). It will cover France with 100 cameras and is expected to be operational for the end of 2015. FRIPON will detect fireballs and hence allow us to define meteorite strewn fields within 24h, so that meteorite searches can be launched very early on. Because of the need to search all over France, including in private land, it is important that the general public be aware of our project and be willing to help or participate. Indeed, as the main goal of FRIPON is to recover fresh meteorites (within a few days), our aim is to be able to organize a search with at least 50 persons to scan an area of a few km2 within a week. Help from the public would hence be most helpful but it is also important to have an operational and trained research team. This project thus appears as a unique occasion to involve the public in a scientific project while promoting informal scientific education. This prompted us to set up Vigie-Ciel, a citizen science network centered on meteorite recovery. FRIPON is an open network based on open-source software, it will accept citizenrun cameras. In addition to fireballs, it will allow scientists and Vigie-Ciel participants to study anything that can be observed by all-sky cameras: bird migrations, bats, clouds, lightning, etc. The data will be freely available to all.

Abstract

Accurate microwave material characterization is essential for reliable high frequency circuit design. Therefore, various characterization techniques have been developed, comprising advantages and drawbacks for the respective conditions. In this paper, a material characterization system is presented, which enables a broadband measurement for both dielectric loss and relative permittivity of bulk substrates with variant geometrical dimensions. Strips of different dielectric bulk materials under test (MUTs) are mounted on top of an open semi double-ridged waveguide. Differential phase and amplitude broadband measurements with the MUTs are performed by a vector network analyzer, providing information on the introduced change in electrical length and dampening. The combined evaluation by measurement and electromagnetic simulations allow broadband assignments of the complex permittivity to the MUTs.

Témoignage non exhaustif, cet article se veut comme un instantané pris au cours d'une conversation entre des collègues aux statuts variés. Sur un ton libre, chacune évoque son parcours, les motivations qui l'animent, les pratiques qui alimentent ses recherches, sa manière singulière de travailler en dialogue avec plusieurs disciplines, et pour finir le rôle de la danse dans la possible remise en jeu des cadres politiques et scientifiques de la recherche universitaire. In December 2012, Joanne Clavel, Sophie Jacotot, Isabelle Launay, Ninon Prouteau-Steinhausser et Violeta Salvatierra met to discuss the broad question of what it means to be a ‘dance researcher’. This theme was launched to inaugurate the new French journal Recherches en danse. The transcript of this interview gives the material to a common text, where different experiences and questions about the profession were formulated and shared. Lots of efforts are actually made to develop fiber laser sources to address a variety of applications in science or industry. Thanks to an excellent thermal dissipation ability due to its intrinsic properties, doped fiber can handle high average power. However, the light confinement in the fiber core as well as the interaction lengths give rise to nonlinear effects as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in the case of a laser with a narrow spectral width. The purpose of this PhD work is to develop a high energy fiber laser source with both a good spatial beam quality and a narrow spectral width in order to be used in coherent LIDAR applications. The approach followed has consisted in fist obtaining the energy and then work ob the beam quality. Thanks to an amplification chain, the last stage being constituted of a multimode Erbium-Ytterbium co-doped fiber, 1,5 μm laser pulses with an energy of more than 1 mJ has been obtained. The very large fiber core avoid the apparition of SBS but the transverse profile of the beam is highly multimode. To recover a good beam quality, a nonlinear reshaping stage has been introduced, using the beam cleanup property of Brillouin effect in a graded index multimode fiber. Moreover, an original scheme of Brillouin amplification has been proposed and studied to maintain the spectral purity of the source.; De nombreux efforts sont actuellement portés sur le développement de sources laser à fibre optique, qui ont des applications dans une variété de domaines scientifiques et industriels. Les propriétés intrinsèques de la fibre dopée sont favorables à l'obtention de fortes puissances moyennes, grâce à une excellente capacité de dissipation thermique. Cependant, le confinement de la lumière dans le coeur de la fibre et les grandes longueurs d'interaction sont à l'origine d'effets non linéaires, comme la diffusion Brillouin stimulée dans le cas d'une source de faible largeur spectrale. L'objectif de ce travail de thèse est de développer une source laser fibrée de forte énergie alliant bonne qualité spatiale et finesse spectrale, dans le but de répondre à un besoin de LIDAR à détection cohérente. L'approche suivie consiste à séparer l'obtention de l'énergie de celle de la qualité de faisceau. Avec une chaîne amplificatrice dont le dernier étage est une fibre multimode co-dopée Erbium-Ytterbium, des impulsions laser à la longueur d'onde de 1,5 μm avec une énergie supérieure à 1 mJ ont été obtenues. Le très large coeur de la fibre évite l'apparition de l'effet Brillouin, mais le profil transverse du faisceau est fortement multimode. Pour retrouver une bonne qualité de faisceau, un étage de remise en forme du profil est mis en place, mettant à profit la propriété de nettoyage de faisceau par effet Brillouin dans une fibre multimode àgradient d'indice. Abstract

International audience; We study a new nonlinear beam cleaning fiber laser architecture to obtain high energy polarized pulses with a good beam quality and a narrow linewidth, which is very attractive for fiber-based coherent lidar applications. The set-up involves stimulated Brillouin scattering in an injection seeded arrangement to proceed the cleanup of an aberrated wavefront coming from a large core Er:Yb co-doped fiber amplifier, operating at 1.55 μm. Both theoretical and experimental results are presented, and we report the conversion of a multimode depolarized beam into a near diffraction limited polarized beam with an efficiency of 50%, while preserving the master oscillator linewidth.

A new seeded stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) beam cleanup scheme to convert the aberrated output of a pulsed multimode fiber master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) while maintaining the spectral width of the master oscillator is proposed. The pulsed master oscillator is a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode amplified through two single mode preamplifiers.

International audience; We propose an original nonlinear beam cleaning fiber laser architecture to obtain high energy pulses with a good beam quality and a narrow linewidth. The output beam of a large core Er:Yb co-doped multimode fiber amplifier (M2 ~ 6, 220 μJ) is converted into a near diffraction limited beam (M2 = 1.6) through a stimulated Brillouin scattering injection seeded beam cleanup process. We report in this experiment a multimode to single mode conversion efficiency of 50% while preserving the master oscillator linewidth

Abstract

The recent advances in solid state laser technology now permit to achieve high energy and efficiency sources for a wide range of applications extending from laser physics to material processing, biophotonics, remote sensing and coherent lidar systems. In particular the progress of fibre laser exploiting the double clading diode pumping structure are impressive: they are compact and emit single mode beams. However optical damage and nonlinear effects limit the output peak power emitted by a single mode fiber laser. Also limitations arise in bulk laser materials due to the thermal loading which induces strong wavefront distortions on the beams. We develop in this paper original concepts adapted to power-energy scaling of bulk or fibre lasers. The final objective is to emit high brightness and high energy beams whose quality is close to the diffraction limit. For this purpose we present new technics to be inspired from from Fourier optics and allowing the wavefront processing either through nonlinear interactions or with adaptive optical components such as electro optic phase modulators or liquid crystal light valves.

Abstract

Introduction: Meteorites in France have always been recovered by the general public. FRIPON, a fireball observation network [1] now covers France and is developing in Europe and in Canada (www.fripon.org). It detects fireballs and allows us to calculate meteorite strewn fields within 24 hours so that searches can be launched very early on and meteorites can be recovered before they alter significantly. Because of the need to search everywhere, including in private land, it is important that the general public be aware of the scientific value of meteorites and willing to contribute to helping us find them on the ground. Vigie-Ciel (www.vigie-ciel.org) is the citizen science counterpart of the FRIPON network. It also invites the general public to participate in the detection of fireballs (www.vigie-ciel.imo.net - a fruitful collaboration with the Amercican Meteor Society) and the identification of impact craters on Earth based on shaded relief images (www.vigie-cratere.org). As participation is more effective if the people involved are informed and trained, Vigie-Ciel also contributes to scientific education on meteors, meteorites and impact craters and, more generally, in planetology. Searching for meteorites: Searching for a meteorite on the ground is not an easy task. Several test campaigns have allowed us to identify the main issues that have to be dealt with. These are related to: (1) the respect of legislation, private property and the inhabitants of the area; (2) the logistical aspects in order to have well-coordinated groups of a reasonable size in the field; (3) the implementation of an efficient communication towards the general public, but also towards the local authorities and the inhabitants of the area. If, for the time being, no meteorites have been found in France through the efforts of FRIPON/Vigie-Ciel, three meteorites have been recovered in the neigboring countries (Cavezzo in Italy [2], Winchcombe in England [3] and Kindberg in Austria [4]) with a contribution of FRIPON equipment and/or through the search methods that were designed by the FRIPON/Vigie-Ciel teams. As in earlier times, all these discoveries involved curious citizens who reached out to scientists, but at least two new factors were also implicated: (1) observations by a professional and/or an amateur camera network which led to a computation of the strewn field and (2) multiple communication channels through the press, the social networks and specially designed leaflets. The Vigie-Ciel network and tools: Information and training of potential participants is an essential part of the Vigie-Ciel program and we are still working at improving it with the help of our national, regional and local partners who also play a major role in setting up the field search campaigns when a meteorite is deemed to have fallen in a neighboring area. Such campaigns could not be set up without their active help and their knowledge of the local territory. These partners, who come from various contexts, are often involved in scientific outreach. They comprise planetariums, natural history museums, astronomy clubs, but also schools, village or town halls... and a large fraction of them also host a FRIPON camera. The Vigie-Ciel National Team offers them training, support and tools - which are still being improved - to perform these tasks. The pedagogic tools we developed include exhibits, a field search training protocol and a set of suitcases containing meteorites, meteowrongs and various tools to study the properties of rocks, which has been reproduced 22 times and distributed in France in the former (smaller) administrative region. These pedagogic suitcase sets are designed to be used by our partners to train interested amateurs and/or to be lent to other structures who wish to become local partners of the project (after they have received a training). So far, the National Team has trained about three times as many instructors as the number of suitcase sets and these, in turn, have the ability to coach new trainers and animators and to organize public outreach events. Conclusion: Vigie-Ciel is a citizen science project designed in France to invite the general public to contribute to studying the flux, origin and nature of extraterrestrial materials that reach the surface of the Earth. Its original focus was on recovering meteorites whose fall was detected by the FRIPON camera network. However, citizens can now contribute in various other ways, which include searching for previously undetected terrestrial impact craters on the Vigie-Cratère website, reporting fireballs and hosting a FRIPON camera. Abstract

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile – hence precious – meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 106 km2. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < –5; meteoroid size ≥~1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/106 km
