- Abstract
Leading indicators of future economic activity include measures such as new housing starts, managers purchasing index, money supply, and bond yields. Such macroeconomic and financial indicators hold predictive power in signaling recessionary periods. However, many indicators are constrained by the fact that data are often published with some delay and are subject to constant revision (Bandholz and Funke 2003, Huang et al 2018, Orphanides 2003). In this research, we propose a leading indicator derived from satellite imagery, the expansion of anthropogenic bare ground. Satellite-detected gain in built-up area, a major land cover and land use (LCLU) outcome of anthropogenic bare ground gain (ABGG), provides an inexpensive, consistent, and near-real-time indicator of global and regional macroeconomic change. Our panel data analysis across four major regions of the world from 2001 to 2012 shows that the logarithm of total ABGG, mostly owing to its major LCLU outcome, the expansion of built-up land in either year t, t −1 or t −2, significantly correlated with the year t logarithm of gross domestic product (GDP, de-trended by Hodrick–Prescott filter). Global ABGG between 2001 and 2012 averaged 7875 km2 yr−1, with a peak gain of 11 875 (± 2014 km2 at the 95% confidence interval) in 2006, prior to the 2007–2008 global financial crisis. The curve of global ABGG or its major LCLU outcome of built-up area in year t − 1 accords well with that of the de-trended logarithm of the global GDP in year t. Given the 40 year archive of free satellite data, a growing satellite constellation, advances in machine learning, and scalable methods, this study suggests that analyses of ABGG as a whole or its LCLU outcomes can provide valuable information in near-real time for socioeconomic research, development planning, and economic forecasting.

E. fornicatus (Eichhoff, 1868) Xyleborus perbrevis Schedl, 1951: 59. Synonymy: Wood 1989. Xyleborus schultzei Schedl, 1951: 68. Synonymy: Beaver 1991; Wood, 1989: 173. Xyleborus tapatapaoensis Schedl, 1951: 152. Synonymy: Wood 1989. The syntypes of E. fornicatus from the Hamburg Museum collected in Sri Lanka were lost during World War II (Wood and Bright 1992). Based on the origin of the missing holotype, we refer to the TSHBa clade as E. fornicatus (Eichhoff 1868). Specimens within this clade have elytral length of 1.45–1.57 mm and a pronotum length of 1.05–1.11 mm, with 7 to 10 socketed denticles on the edge of protibia. Pronotum width in this clade is 1.04–1.1 mm and elytra width is 0.5–0.54 mm. Distribution: Asia (American Samoa, China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand), Australia, and introduced in United States (Florida and Hawaii)., Published as part of Gomez, Demian F., Skelton, James, Steininger, M. - Abstract
Sampling along a precipitation gradient in tropical South America extending from ca. 0.8 to 2.0 m ag-1, savanna soils had consistently lower exchangeable cation concentrations and higher C/N ratios than nearby forest plots. These soil differences were also reflected in canopy averaged leaf traits with savanna trees typically having higher leaf mass per unit area but lower mass-based nitrogen (Nm) and potassium (Km). Both Nm and Km also increased with declining mean annual precipitation (PA), but most area-based leaf traits such as leaf photosynthetic capacity showed no systematic variation with PA or vegetation type. Despite this invariance, when taken in conjunction with other measures such as mean canopy height, area-based soil exchangeable potassium content, [K]sa , proved to be an excellent predictor of several photosynthetic properties (including 13C isotope discrimination). Moreover, when considered in a multivariate context with PA and soil plant available water storage capacity (θP) as covariates, [K]sa also proved to be an excellent predictor of stand-level canopy area, providing drastically improved fits as compared to models considering just PA and/or θP. Neither calcium, nor magnesium, nor soil pH could substitute for potassium when tested as alternative model predictors (ΔAIC > 10). Nor for any model could simple soil texture metrics such as sand or clay content substitute for either [K]sa or θP. Taken in conjunction with recent work in Africa and the forests of the Amazon Basin, this suggests-in combination with some newly conceptualised interacting effects of PA and θP also presented here-a critical role for potassium as a modulator of tropical vegetation structure and function.

- Abstract
Through interpretations of remote-sensing data and/or theoretical propositions, the idea that forest and savanna represent “alternative stable states” is gaining increasing acceptance. Filling an observational gap, we present detailed stratified floristic and structural analyses for forest and savanna stands located mostly within zones of transition (where both vegetation types occur in close proximity) in Africa, South America and Australia. Woody plant leaf area index variation was related to tree canopy cover in a similar way for both savanna and forest with substantial overlap between the two vegetation types. As total woody plant canopy cover increased, so did the relative contribution of middle and lower strata of woody vegetation. Herbaceous layer cover declined as woody cover increased. This pattern of understorey grasses and herbs progressively replaced by shrubs as the canopy closes over was found for both savannah and forests and on all continents. Thus, once subordinate woody canopy layers are taken into account, a less marked transition in woody plant cover across the savanna–forest species discontinuum is observed compared to that inferred when trees of a basal diameter > 0:1m are considered in isolation. This is especially the case for shrub-dominated savannas and in taller savannas approaching canopy closure. An increased contribution of forest species to the total subordinate cover is also observed as savanna stand canopy closure occurs. Despite similarities in canopy-cover haracteristics, woody vegetation in Africa and Australia attained greater heights and stored a greater amount of above-ground biomass than in South America. Up to three times as much aboveground biomass is stored in forests compared to savannas under equivalent climatic conditions. Savanna–forest transition zones were also found to typically occur at higher precipitation regimes for South America than for Africa. Nevertheless, consistent across all three continents coexistence was

- Abstract
Updated results from the appearance searches for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) and nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillations in the full NOMAD data sample are reported. The increased data and the use of more refined kinematic schemes for the nu(tau) CC selection allow a significant improvement of the overall sensitivity. The "blind analysis" of both the deep-inelastic and the low multiplicity samples yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% C.L. region in the sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) - Delta m(2) plane which includes sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 4.4 X 10(-4) at large Delta m(2) and Delta m(2) < 0.8 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) = 1. The corresponding contour in the nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillation hypothesis results in sin(2)2 theta(e tau) < 2.2 X 10(-2) at large Delta m(2) and Delta m(2) < 6.5 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2)2 theta(e tau) = 1. - Abstract
In the context of a two-flavour approximation we reinterpret the published NOMAD limit on nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillations in terms of nu(e) --> nu(tau) oscillations. At 90% C.L. we obtain sin2(2)theta(e tau) < 5.2 X 10(-2) for large Delta m(2), while for sin2(2)theta(e tau) = 1 the confidence region includes Delta m(2) < 11 eV(2)/c(4). - Abstract
The NOMAD Collaboration presents a study of opposite sign dimuon events in the framework of Leading Order QCD. A total of 2714 neutrino- and 115 antineutrino-induced opposite sign dimuon events with E-mu 1, E-mu 2 > 4.5 GeV, 15 < E-nu < 300 GeV and Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c)(2) are observed in the Front-Calorimeter of NOMAD during the 1995 and 1996 runs. The analysis yields a value for the charm quark mass of m(c) = 1.3(-0.3-0.3)(+0.3+0.3) GeV/c(2) and fur the average semileptonic branching ratio of B-c = 0.095(-0.007-0.013)(+0.007+0.014). The ratio of the strange to non-strange sea in the nucleon is measured to be kappa = 0.48(-0.07-0.12)(+0.09+0.17). The measured rate of charm-induced dimuon relative to single muon, as a function of neutrino energy, is consistent with the slow rescaling hypothesis of heavy quark production. We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar or pseudoscalar particles a's (an example of which is the axion) that couple to two photons by using a photon-regeneration method at high energies allowing a substantial increase in the sensitivity to eV masses. The experimental set-up is based on elements of the CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF) beam Line and the NOMAD neutrino detector. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of high energy photons, generated by the 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target, with virtual photons from the WANF horn magnetic field. The particles would penetrate the downstream shielding and would be observed in the NOMAD neutrino detector through their re-conversion into real high energy photons by interacting with the virtual photons from the magnetic field of the NOMAD dipole magnet. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996 run with 1.08 x 10(19) protons on target, 312 candidate events with energy between 5 and 140 GeV were found. This number is in general agreement with the expectation of 272 +/- 18 background events from standard neutrino processes. A 90 % CL upper limit on the a gamma gamma-coupling g(a gamma gamma) < 1.5 x 10(-4) GeV-1 for a masses up to 40 eV is obtained. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High Energy Physics::Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering nu(mu)N and charged cur rent events over the Q(2) range from 1 to 100 GeV2. The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q(2)-evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e(+)e(-) experiments. High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify nu(tau) charged current interactions followed by decay of the tau(-) to one of several decay modes. Our "blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90% C.L. confidence region in the sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) - Delta m(2) plane. At large Delta m(2) the confidence region includes sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 1.2 X 10(-3) (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) = 1 the confidence region includes Delta m(2) < 1.2 eV(2)/c(4). - Abstract
A search was made for a new light gauge boson X which might be produced in pi(0) -->, gamma + X decay from neutral pions generated by 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of X --> pi(0) conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With 1.45 x 10(18) protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1 +/- 2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio Br(pi(0) --> Y + X)< (3.3 to 1.9)X 10(-5) for X masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c(2) is obtained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for v(tau) appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band v(mu) beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of I: charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied tau decay modes, a limit of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 4.2 x 10(-3) is obtained for large Delta m(2) at the 90% confidence level. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Physics::Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics::Phenomenology ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for v(mu) - v(tau) oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The v(tau)'s are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting tau(-) through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe K-s(o)'s, Lambda(o)'s and pi(0)s. Finally, the observation of tau(-) through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed. Chinese tallowtree, Triadica sebifera (L.) Small ( Euphorbiaceae), is one of the worst invasive weeds of the southeastern USA impacting coastal wetlands, forests, and natural areas. Traditional mechanical and chemical controls have been unable to limit the spread, and this invasive species continues to expand its range. A proposed biological control candidate, the flea beetle Bikasha collaris ( Baly) ( Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), shows high specificity for the target weed Chinese tallowtree. Results from a series of no-choice and choice feeding tests of B. collaris adults and larvae indicated that this flea beetle was highly specific to Chinese tallowtree. The larvae of B. collaris feed by tunneling in the roots, whereas the adults feed on the leaves of Chinese tallowtree. A total of 77 plant taxa, primarily from members of the tallow plant family Euphorbiaceae, were tested in numerous test designs. Larval no-choice tests indicated that larvae completed development only on two of the non-target taxa. Of 80 B. collaris larvae fed roots of Hippomane mancinella L. and 50 larvae fed roots of Ricinus communis L., two and three larvae completed development, respectively. The emerging adults of these five larvae died within 3 days without reproducing. Larval choice tests also indicated little use of these non-target taxa. Adult no-choice tests indicated little leaf damage by B. collaris on the non-targets except for Ditrysinia fruticosa ( Bartram) Govaerts & Frodin and Gymnanthes lucida Sw. When given a choice, however, B. collaris adults consumed much less of the non-targets D. fruticosa (7.4%) and G. lucida (6.1%) compared with the control leaves. Finally, no-choice oviposition tests indicated that no eggs were produced when adults were fed all non-target taxa, except those fed G. lucida. These B. collaris adults fed G. lucida leaves produced an average of 4.6 eggs compared with 115.0 eggs per female when fed Chinese tallowtree. The eggs produced from adults fed G. lucida were either inviable or the emerging larvae died within 1 day. These results indicate that the flea beetle B. collaris was unable to complete its life cycle on any of the non-target taxa tested. If approved for field release, B. collaris will be the first biological control agent deployed against Chinese tallowtree in the USA. This flea beetle may play an important role in suppressing Chinese tallowtree and contribute to the integrated control of this invasive weed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Updated results from the appearance searches for $\numunutau$ and $\nuenutau$ oscillations in the full NOMAD data sample are reported. The increased data and the use of more refined kinematic schemes for the $\nutau$ CC selection allow a significant improvement of the overall sensitivity. The ``blind analysis" of both the deep-inelastic and the low multiplicity samples yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90\% C.L. region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane which includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\ \ 4.4\times10^{-4}$ at large $\Delta m^2$ and $\Delta m^2 0.8$ eV$^2$/$c^4$ at $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}=1$. The corresponding contour in the $\nuenutau$ oscillation hypothesis results in $\sin^22\theta_{e\tau}\ \ 2.2\times10^{-2}$ at large $\Delta m^2$ and $\Delta m^2 6.5$ eV$^2$/$c^4$ at $\sin^22\theta_{e \tau}=1$

With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Delta m^2$, the confidence region includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\

High Energy Physics::Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment ,nu_mu interactions ,anti nu_mu interactions - Abstract
We report the first precision measurements of the scaled momentum, the charge multiplicity, and the thrust of hadronic jets in the Breit frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering nu_muN and anti nu_muN charged current events over the Q^2 range from 1 to 100 GeV^2. The neutrino data, obtained in the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS, extend the Q^2-evolution of these parameters by two orders of magnitude, and with commensurate precision, when compared to those reported by the ep and e^+e^- experiments.
