We report on the new non--linear optical signatures of quantum phase transitions in the high-temperature superconductor YBCO, observed through high harmonic generation. While the linear optical response of the material is largely unchanged when cooling across the phase transitions, the nonlinear optical response sensitively imprints two critical points, one at the critical temperature of the cuprate with the exponential growth of the surface harmonic yield in the superconducting phase, and another critical point, which marks the transition from strange metal to pseudo gap phase. To reveal the underlying microscopic quantum dynamics, a novel strong-field quasi-Hubbard model was developed, which describes the measured optical response dependent on the formation of Cooper pairs. Further, the new theory provides insight into the carrier scattering dynamics and allows to differentiate between the superconducting, pseudo gap, and strange metal phases. The direct connection between non--linear optical response and microscopic dynamics provides a powerful new methodology to study quantum phase transitions in correlated materials. Further implications are light-wave control over intricate quantum phases, light-matter hybrids, and application for optical quantum computing.

Ultrafast diffraction imaging is a powerful tool to retrieve the geometric structure of gas-phase molecules with combined picometre spatial and attosecond temporal resolution. However, structural retrieval becomes progressively difficult with increasing structural complexity, given that a global extremum must be found in a multi-dimensional solution space. Worse, pre-calculating many thousands of molecular configurations for all orientations becomes simply intractable. As a remedy, here, we propose a machine learning algorithm with a convolutional neural network which can be trained with a limited set of molecular configurations. We demonstrate structural retrieval of a complex and large molecule, Fenchone (C$_{10}$H$_{16}$O), from laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) data without fitting algorithms or ab initio calculations. Retrieval of such a large molecular structure is not possible with other variants of LIED or ultrafast electron diffraction. Combining electron diffraction with machine learning presents new opportunities to image complex and larger molecules in static and time-resolved studies.

We report the design and implementation of multiple Tesla type micro valves in the target delivery system of a reaction microscope (ReMi) to study gas phase structural dynamics of complex polyatomic molecules, when no delivery system currently exists that can deliver dense enough molecular jets of neutral complex molecules without ionizing or exciting the target. We show, the Tesla valves provide an efficient unidirectional flow of the cis-stilbene molecules into the ReMi. We demonstrate using a bubbler with Tesla valves an order-of-magnitude increase in the detected stilbene molecular ion signal following the strong-field tunnel ionization (SFTI), compared to conventional bubbler without any Tesla valves. Our results for the first time, opens the door for studying large, complex neutral molecules in the gas-phase with low vapour pressures in future ultrafast studies.

Visualizing molecular transformations in real-time requires a structural retrieval method with {\AA}ngstr\"om spatial and femtosecond temporal atomic resolution. Imaging of hydrogen-containing molecules additionally requires an imaging method that is sensitive to the atomic positions of hydrogen nuclei, with most methods possessing relatively low sensitivity to hydrogen scattering. Laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) is a table top technique that can image ultrafast structural changes of gas-phase polyatomic molecules with sub-{\AA}ngstr\"om and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolution together with relatively high sensitivity to hydrogen scattering. Here, we image the umbrella motion of an isolated ammonia molecule (NH$_3$) following its strong field ionization. Upon ionization of a neutral ammonia molecule, the ammonia cation (NH$_3^+$) undergoes an ultrafast geometrical transformation from a pyramidal ($\Phi_{HNH} = 107 ^\circ$) to planar ($\Phi_{HNH}=120^\circ$) structure in approximately 8 femtoseconds. Using LIED, we retrieve a near-planar ($\Phi_{HNH}=117 \pm 5^\circ$) field-dressed NH$_3^+$ molecular structure $7.8-9.8$ femtoseconds after ionization. Our measured field-dressed NH$_3^+$ structure is in excellent agreement with our calculated equilibrium field dressed structure using quantum chemical ab initio calculations.

We present the state of the art of a compact high-energy mid-infrared laser system for TW-level 8-cycle pulses at 7 um. This system consists of an Er:Tm:Ho:fiber MOPA which serves as the seeder for a ZGP-based OPCPA chain in addition to a Ho:YLF amplifier which is Tm:fiber pumped. Featuring all-optical synchronization, the system delivers 260-mJ pump energy at 2052 nm, 16-ps duration at 100 Hz with a stability of 0.8 % rms over 20 min. We show that chirp inversion in the OPCPA chain leads to excellent energy extraction and aids in compression of the 7-um pulses to 8 optical cycles (188 fs) in bulk BaF2 with 93.5 % efficiency. Using 21.7 mJ of the available pump energy, we generate 0.75-mJ-energy pulses at 7 um due to increased efficiency with a chirp-inversion scheme. The pulse quality of the system's output is shown by generating high harmonics in ZnSe which span up to harmonic order 13 with excellent contrast. The combination of the passive carrier-envelope phase stable mid-infrared seed pulses and the high-energy 2052 nm picosecond pulses makes this compact system a key enabling tool for the next generation of studies on extreme photonics, strong field physics and table-top coherent X-ray science., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Observing changes in molecular structure requires atomic-scale {\AA}ngstrom and femtosecond spatio-temporal resolution. We use the Fourier transform (FT) variant of laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED), FT-LIED, to directly retrieve the molecular structure of ${\rm H_2O^+}$ with picometre and femtosecond resolution without a priori knowledge of the molecular structure nor the use of retrieval algorithms or ab initio calculations. We identify a symmetrically stretched ${\rm H_2O^+}$ field-dressed structure that is most likely in the ground electronic state. We subsequently study the nuclear response of an isolated water molecule to an external laser field at four different field strengths. We show that upon increasing the laser field strength from 2.5 to 3.8 V/{\AA}, the O-H bond is further stretched and the molecule slightly bends. The observed ultrafast structural changes lead to an increase in the dipole moment of water and, in turn, a stronger dipole interaction between the nuclear framework of the molecule and the intense laser field. Our results provide important insights into the coupling of the nuclear framework to a laser field as the molecular geometry of ${\rm H_2O^+}$ is altered in the presence of an external field.

Structural information on electronically excited neutral molecules can be indirectly retrieved, largely through pump-probe and rotational spectroscopy measurements with the aid of calculations. Here, we demonstrate the direct structural retrieval of neutral carbonyl disulfide (CS$_2$) in the B$^1$B$_2$ excited electronic state using laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED). We unambiguously identify the ultrafast symmetric stretching and bending of the field-dressed neutral CS$_2$ molecule with combined picometer and attosecond resolution using intrapulse pump-probe excitation and measurement. We invoke the Renner-Teller effect to populate the B$^1$B$_2$ excited state in neutral CS$_2$, leading to bending and stretching of the molecule. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of LIED in retrieving the geometric structure of CS$_2$, which is known to appear as a two-center scatterer.

The generation of random bits is of enormous importance in modern information science. Cryptographic security is based on random numbers which require a physical process for their generation. This is commonly performed by hardware random number generators. These exhibit often a number of problems, namely experimental bias, memory in the system, and other technical subtleties, which reduce the reliability in the entropy estimation. Further, the generated outcome has to be post-processed to "iron out" such spurious effects. Here, we present a purely optical randomness generator, based on the bi-stable output of an optical parametric oscillator. Detector noise plays no role and no further post-processing is required. Upon entering the bi-stable regime, initially the resulting output phase depends on vacuum fluctuations. Later, the phase is rigidly locked and can be well determined versus a pulse train, which is derived from the pump laser. This delivers an ambiguity-free output, which is reliably detected and associated with a binary outcome. The resulting random bit stream resembles a perfect coin toss and passes all relevant randomness measures. The random nature of the generated binary outcome is furthermore confirmed by an analysis of resulting conditional entropies., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
