10. Building rethought – 3D concrete printing in building practice

Abstract

After only a few of years of intensive research all over the world, 3D printing of buildings has been induced in practical application in construction industry. In the course of this, in 2021, the first 3D printed residential building was realised in Beckum, Germany. The aim of this paper is to give an insight to the impetus, the ideas and the individual steps to realize this project. We describe the technology used and give an overview about background of the material development and the requirements for the material. Furthermore the architectural design und planning process is displayed. However, existing design codes do not cover all special technical features of the new construction method. Consequently, we describe the concept how the building permission (approval) for the construction by following existing standards (DIN EN) for concrete and masonry construction was achieved and granted. Finally we give an insight in the construction process and conclude with lessons learned for future projects.

Abstract

Ziel der Arbeit ist die Bereitstellung eines Konzepts, welches die Bewertung der Leistungsfähigkeit von Stahlfasern in UHPC unter mechanischen, ökonomischen und ökologischen Gesichtspunkten zulässt. Zur Erarbeitung dieses Konzepts wurde eine mehrskalige Herangehensweise gewählt, welche Betrachtungen auf der Mikro-, Meso- und Makroebene umfasst. Die drei Ebenen wurden so miteinander verknüpft, dass schließlich eine Faserleistungskennzahl für die Faserwirkung im Kompositwerkstoff auf Basis des Kraftübertragungsverhaltens einer einzelnen Faser angegeben werden kann. The present study provides a framework for the evaluation of fibre performance in composites based on pull-out behavior of a single fibre. Investigations were done at different length scales, i.e. from microscopic range to macroscopic range. Finally, a fibre efficiency number was developed which together with economical and ecological parameters allows evaluating the performance of fibres in composites in terms of a multiple attribute decision aid (mada).
