Abstract Besides being responsible for olfaction and air intake, the nose contains abundant vasculature and autonomic nervous system innervations, and it is a cerebrospinal fluid clearance site. Therefore, the nose is an attractive target for functional MRI (fMRI). Yet, nose fMRI has not been possible so far due to signal losses originating from nasal air-tissue interfaces. Here, we demonstrated feasibility of nose fMRI by using novel ultrashort/zero echo time (TE) MRI. Results obtained in the resting-state from 13 healthy participants at 7T and in 5 awake mice at 9.4T revealed a highly reproducible resting-state nose functional network that likely reflects autonomic nervous system activity. Another network observed in humans involves the nose, major brain vessels and CSF spaces, presenting a temporal dynamic that correlates with heart rate and breathing rate. These resting-state nose functional signals should help elucidate peripheral and central nervous system integrations.

This paper considers some assumptions about historical English spelling, in particular the idea that historical orthographies, in the absence of standardisation, naturally tend to a close spelling-sound correspondence. It focuses on the group of Early Middle English texts copied by the Tremulous Hand of Worcester in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, and addresses the question to what extent it is fair to consider them representative of an archaising strategy, a product of antiquarian interest. It is suggested that, while the texts copied by the Tremulous Hand, like most Middle English copied texts, are likely to carry over some features from their exemplars, they reflect a competent use of English as a living written medium and are consistent with other twelfth- and thirteenth-century writing systems. Accordingly, there seems to be no reason to assume a specifically antiquarian motivation behind the Tremulous Hand’s spelling choices. Rather, they reflect three basic features that are present throughout the history of English writing: conventionality, complexity and the use of substitution sets.

In patients suffering absence epilepsy, recurring seizures can significantly decrease their quality of life and lead to yet untreatable comorbidities. Absence seizures are characterized by spike-and-wave discharges on the electroencephalogram associated with a transient alteration of consciousness. However, it is still unknown how the brain responds to external stimuli during and outside of seizures. This study aimed to investigate responsiveness to visual and somatosensory stimulation in Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg (GAERS), a well-established rat model for absence epilepsy. Animals were imaged under non-curarized awake state using a quiet, zero echo time, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sequence. Sensory stimulations were applied during interictal and ictal periods. Whole-brain hemodynamic responses were compared between these two states. Additionally, a mean-field simulation model was used to explain the changes of neural responsiveness to visual stimulation between states. During a seizure, whole-brain responses to both sensory stimulations were suppressed and spatially hindered. In the cortex, hemodynamic responses were negatively polarized during seizures, despite the application of a stimulus. The mean-field simulation revealed restricted propagation of activity due to stimulation and agreed well with fMRI findings. Results suggest that sensory processing is hindered or even suppressed by the occurrence of an absence seizure, potentially contributing to decreased responsiveness during this absence epileptic process.

Abstract Background and purpose Soong classification is used to estimate volar locking plate prominence and evaluate the risk for flexor tendon ruptures after surgical treatment of distal radius fractures (DRFs). However, the scientific community has questioned the Soong classification due to lacking evidence. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Soong grading as a predictor for flexor tendon issues and plate removal. Patients and methods We performed a retrospective single-center review of adult distal radius fracture patients treated with a volar locking plate between 2009 and 2019. In total, 2779 patients were included in the study. The primary outcome was a flexor tendon issue (flexor tendon rupture, tendinitis, or flexor irritation), whereas plate removal was a secondary outcome. Using Soong grade 0 as a reference, we used univariable and multivariable logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for flexor tendon issues and plate removal. Results In total, 756 (27%) patients were graded as Soong 0, 1679 (60%) Soong 1, and 344 (12%) Soong 2, respectively. There were 32 (1.2%) patients with flexor tendon issues, of which 4 were flexor tendon ruptures, 8 tendinitises, and 20 flexor irritations. The adjusted OR for flexor tendon issues was 4.4 (CI 1.1–39.7) for Soong grade 1 and 9.7 (CI 2.2–91.1) for Soong grade 2. The plate was removed from 167 (6.0%) patients. Soong grade 1 had a univariable OR of 1.8 (CI 1.2–2.8) for plate removal, and Soong grade 2 had an OR of 3.5. (CI 2.1–5.8), respectively. Conclusion Flexor tendon ruptures are rare complications after the volar plating of DRFs. A higher Soong grade is a risk factor for flexor tendon issues and plate removal. Trial registration The trial was retrospectively registered.

Background:. The incidence of and risk factors for adverse events after internal fixation of diaphyseal forearm fractures have not been well defined in the current literature. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of adverse events after diaphyseal forearm fracture surgery in adults and explore potential risk factors for adverse events. Methods:. We conducted a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study in which we evaluated all diaphyseal forearm fractures between 2009 and 2019 in patients presenting to 4 trauma hospitals in southern Finland. Hamstring injuries are among the most common muscle injuries. They have been reported in many different sports, such as running, soccer, track and field, rugby, and waterskiing. However, they are also present among the general population. Most hamstring injuries are mild strains, but also moderate and severe injuries occur. Hamstring injuries usually occur in rapid movements involving eccentric demands of the posterior thigh. Sprinting has been found to mainly affect the isolated proximal biceps femoris, whereas stretching-type injuries most often involve an isolated proximal injury of the semimembranosus muscle. The main cause of severe 2- or 3-tendon avulsion is a rapid forceful hip flexion with the ipsilateral knee extended. Most hamstring injuries are treated non-surgically with good results. However, there are also clear indications for surgical treatment, such as severe 2- or 3-tendon avulsions. In athletes, more aggressive recommendations concerning surgical treatment can be found. For a professional athlete, a proximal isolated tendon avulsion with clear retraction should be treated operatively regardless of the injured tendon. Surgical treatment has been found to have good results in severe injuries, especially if the avulsion injury is repaired in acute phase. In chronic hamstring injuries and recurring ruptures, the anatomical apposition of the retracted muscles is more difficult to be achieved. This review article analyses the outcomes of surgical treatment of hamstring ruptures. The present study confirms the previous knowledge that surgical treatment of hamstring tendon injuries causes good results with high satisfaction rates, both in complete and partial avulsions. Early surgical repair leads to better functional results with lower complication rates, especially in complete avulsions.KEY MESSAGEsSurgical treatment of hamstring tendon ruptures leads to high satisfaction and return to sport rates.Both complete and partial hamstring tendon ruptures have better results after acute surgical repair, when compared to cases treated surgically later.Athletes with hamstring tendon ruptures should be treated more aggressively with operative methods.

Background and purpose: Premature physeal closure (PPC) is a common and concerning complication to distal femoral fractures as the distal growth plate accounts for 70% of the growth of the femur. The literature is not unanimous in determining the risk factors of PPC, and the epidemiological characterization of these fractures is limited. Our aim was to calculate the population-based incidence and investigate risk factors for PPC in these fractures. Patients and methods: In this register-based study, between 2014 and 2021, 70 children with distal femoral physeal fractures presented to our hospital. Demographic data, and fracture- and treatment-related details were collected using the Kids’ Fracture Tool. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) was constructed to determine confounding factors used in the risk analysis. Results: Physeal fractures of the distal femur occurred with an annual incidence of 6/105 children, and a resulting PPC occurred in 16/70 (23%) with an annual incidence of 1.3/105 children. In multivariable analysis, dislocation exceeding 10 mm was a risk factor for PPC (OR 6.3, CI 1.4-22). Conclusion: One-fourth of distal femoral physeal fractures developed PPC. Greater dislocation and higher injury energy were significant risk factors, whereas choice of fracture treatment was not an independent risk factor. All patients with PPC belonged in the age group 11–16 years.

Background: Prefrontal theta oscillations are involved in neuronal information transfer and retention. Phases along the theta cycle represent varied excitability states, whereby high-excitability states correspond to high-frequency neuronal activity and heightened capacity for plasticity induction, as demonstrated in animal studies. Human studies corroborate this model and suggest a core role of prefrontal theta activity in working memory (WM).Objective/Hypothesis: We aimed at modulating prefrontal neuronal excitability and WM performance in healthy humans, using real-time EEG analysis for triggering repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) theta-phase synchronized to the left dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. Methods: 16 subjects underwent 3 different rTMS interventions on separate days, with pulses triggered according to the individual's real-time EEG activity: 400 rTMS gamma-frequency (100 Hz) triplet bursts applied during either the negative peak of the prefrontal theta oscillation, the positive peak, or at random phase. Changes in cortical excitability were assessed with EEG responses following single-pulse TMS, and behavioral effects by using a WM task. Results: Negative-peak rTMS increased single-pulse TMS-induced prefrontal theta power and theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling, and decreased WM response time. In contrast, positive-peak rTMS decreased prefrontal theta power, while no changes were observed after random-phase rTMS. Conclusion: Findings point to the feasibility of EEG-TMS technology in a theta–gamma phase–amplitude coupling mode for effectively modifying WM networks in human prefrontal cortex, with potential for therapeutic applications.

Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) allows non-invasive stimulation of the cortex. In multi-locus TMS (mTMS), the stimulating electric field (E-field) is controlled electronically without coil movement by adjusting currents in the coils of a transducer. Objective: To develop an mTMS system that allows adjusting the location and orientation of the E-field maximum within a cortical region. Methods: We designed and manufactured a planar 5-coil mTMS transducer to allow controlling the maximum of the induced E-field within a cortical region approximately 30 mm in diameter. We developed electronics with a design consisting of independently controlled H-bridge circuits to drive up to six TMS coils. To control the hardware, we programmed software that runs on a field-programmable gate array and a computer. To induce the desired E-field in the cortex, we developed an optimization method to calculate the currents needed in the coils. We characterized the mTMS system and conducted a proof-of-concept motor-mapping experiment on a healthy volunteer. In the motor mapping, we kept the transducer placement fixed while electronically shifting the E-field maximum on the precentral gyrus and measuring electromyography from the contralateral hand. Results: The transducer consists of an oval coil, two figure-of-eight coils, and two four-leaf-clover coils stacked on top of each other. The technical characterization indicated that the mTMS system performs as designed. The measured motor evoked potential amplitudes varied consistently as a function of the location of the E-field maximum. Conclusion: The developed mTMS system enables electronically targeted brain stimulation within a cortical region.

Background and purpose: Proximal tibial fractures are infrequent injuries in children, and the literature on epidemiology, associated injuries, and management is limited. We calculated a population-based incidence and described the characteristics of proximal tibial fractures in children in terms of complications and management. Patients and methods: This is a retrospective study over a 6-year-period during including 241 children with proximal tibial fractures who presented to our university hospital. Demographic and fracture-related data was collected from the Kids’ Fracture Tool. The number of children during the study period was collected from statistical yearbooks of the City of Helsinki to estimate annual incidence. Results: Extra-articular fractures (129/241) peaked at the age of 3 and tibial tubercle (42/241) and intra-articular fractures (70/241) peaked at the age of 15. Annual incidences were estimated to be 3.4/100,000 children and 22/100,000 children in the age group of 13–16 years for ACL avulsions, and 3.8/100,000 children and 21/100,000 children in the age group of 13–16 years for tibial tubercle fractures. The incidence of vascular compromise (0%) and compartment syndrome was low (0.4 %, 1/241). Conclusion: Proximal tibial fractures present with a bimodal distribution, with extra-articular fractures peaking at the age of 3 years and fractures of the tibial tuberosity and intra-articular fractures peaking at the age of 15 years. Additionally, associated compartment syndrome and vascular compromise was not as common as previously reported.

The spatial resolution of EEG/MEG source estimates, often described in terms of source leakage in the context of the inverse problem, poses constraints on the inferences that can be drawn from EEG/MEG source estimation results. Software packages for EEG/MEG data analysis offer a large choice of source estimation methods but few tools to experimental researchers for methods evaluation and comparison. Here, we describe a framework and tools for objective and intuitive resolution analysis of EEG/MEG source estimation based on linear systems analysis, and apply those to the most widely used distributed source estimation methods such as L2-minimum-norm estimation (L2-MNE) and linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformers. Within this framework it is possible to define resolution metrics that define meaningful aspects of source estimation results (such as localization accuracy in terms of peak localization error, PLE, and spatial extent in terms of spatial deviation, SD) that are relevant to the task at hand and can easily be visualized. At the core of this framework is the resolution matrix, which describes the potential leakage from and into point sources (point-spread and cross-talk functions, or PSFs and CTFs, respectively). Importantly, for linear methods these functions allow generalizations to multiple sources or complex source distributions. This paper provides a tutorial-style introduction into linear EEG/MEG source estimation and resolution analysis aimed at experimental (rather than methods-oriented) researchers. We used this framework to demonstrate how L2-MNE-type as well as LCMV beamforming methods can be evaluated in practice using software tools that have only recently become available for routine use. Our novel methods comparison includes PLE and SD for a larger number of methods than in similar previous studies, such as unweighted, depth-weighted and normalized L2-MNE methods (including dSPM, sLORETA, eLORETA) and two LCMV beamformers. The results demonstrate that some methods can achieve low and even zero PLE for PSFs. However, their SD as well as both PLE and SD for CTFs are far less optimal for all methods, in particular for deep cortical areas. We hope that our paper will encourage EEG/MEG researchers to apply this approach to their own tasks at hand.

Background and purpose — Traditionally, overriding distal radius fractures in children have been reduced and immobilized with a cast or treated with percutaneous pin fixation. There is recent evidence that these fractures heal well if immobilized in the bayonet position without reduction. We evaluated the present treatment of these fractures. Methods — A questionnaire including AP and lateral radiographs of overriding distal radius fractures in 3 pre-pubertal children was answered by 213 surgeons from 28 countries. The surgeons were asked to choose their preferred method of treatment (no reduction, reduction, reduction and osteosynthesis), type and length of cast immobilization, and the number of clinical and radiographic follow-ups. Results — Of the 213 participating surgeons, 176 (83%) would have reduced all 3 presented fractures, whereas 4 (2%) would have treated all 3 children with cast immobilization without reduction. Most reductions (77%) would have been done under general anesthesia. Over half (54%) of the surgeons who preferred anesthesia would have fixed (pins 99%, plate 1%) the fractures. An above-elbow splint or circular cast was chosen in 84% of responses, and the most popular (44%) length of immobilization was 4 weeks. Surgeons from the Nordic countries were more eager to fix the fractures (54% vs. 31%, p < 0.001) and preferred shorter immobilization and follow-up times and less frequent clinical and radiological follow-ups compared with their colleagues from the USA. Interpretation — Most of the participating surgeons prefer to reduce overriding distal radius fractures in children under anesthesia. There is substantial lack of agreement on the indications for osteosynthesis, type of cast, length of immobilization, and follow-up protocol.

In this paper, we ask how the Finnish Roma community handled the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the information reached Roma communities. The previous studies indicate existing health inequalities between Finnish Roma and the general population. The point of departure for the article is crisis communication between Finnish Roma and national authorities. The themes of racialization, mistrust and Roma relying on peers as a source of information and support became apparent. From this setting, this article sheds light on the way of speaking, usage of language, (Finnish) as a social construction of ethnic identity and expression of (non)belonging. At the same time, the usage of languge and codeswitching reveals social stratifications among the Finnish Roma population. Findings indicate that subtle forms of exclusion of Roma prevail in Finland and are materialized as a “left alone mentality”. Consequently, Roma persons working as civil servants or NGO workers would potentially constitute a crucial link between health authorities and the Roma population. This link, however, should be constantly maintained. The study is a qualitative study and based on thematic interviews among Roma actors.

Understanding the link between the brain activity and behavior is a key challenge in modern neuroscience. Behavioral neuroscience, however, lacks tools to record whole-brain activity in complex behavioral settings. Here we demonstrate that a novel Multi-Band SWeep Imaging with Fourier Transformation (MB-SWIFT) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) approach enables whole-brain studies in spontaneously behaving head-fixed rats. First, we show anatomically relevant functional parcellation. Second, we show sensory, motor, exploration, and stress-related brain activity in relevant networks during corresponding spontaneous behavior. Third, we show odor-induced activation of olfactory system with high correlation between the fMRI and behavioral responses. We conclude that the applied methodology enables novel behavioral study designs in rodents focusing on tasks, cognition, emotions, physical exercise, and social interaction. Importantly, novel zero echo time and large bandwidth approaches, such as MB-SWIFT, can be applied for human behavioral studies, allowing more freedom as body movement is dramatically less restricting factor.

In this paper, we analyze spatial sampling of electro- (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), where the electric or magnetic field is typically sampled on a curved surface such as the scalp. By simulating fields originating from a representative adult-male head, we study the spatial-frequency content in EEG as well as in on- and off-scalp MEG. This analysis suggests that on-scalp MEG, off-scalp MEG and EEG can benefit from up to 280, 90 and 110 spatial samples, respectively. In addition, we suggest a new approach to obtain sensor locations that are optimal with respect to prior assumptions. The approach also allows to control, e.g., the uniformity of the sensor locations. Based on our simulations, we argue that for a low number of spatial samples, model-informed non-uniform sampling can be beneficial. For a large number of samples, uniform sampling grids yield nearly the same total information as the model-informed grids.

Isoflurane, the most commonly used preclinical anesthetic, induces brain plasticity and long-term cellular and molecular changes leading to behavioral and/or cognitive consequences. These changes are most likely associated with network-level changes in brain function. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying long-term effects of isoflurane, we investigated the influence of a single isoflurane exposure on functional connectivity, brain electrical activity, and gene expression.Male Wistar rats (n = 22) were exposed to 1.8% isoflurane for 3 h. Control rats (n = 22) spent 3 h in the same room without exposure to anesthesia. After 1 month, functional connectivity was evaluated with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI; n = 6 + 6) and local field potential measurements (n = 6 + 6) in anesthetized animals. A whole genome expression analysis (n = 10+10) was also conducted with mRNA-sequencing from cortical and hippocampal tissue samples.Isoflurane treatment strengthened thalamo-cortical and hippocampal-cortical functional connectivity. Cortical low-frequency fMRI power was also significantly increased in response to the isoflurane treatment. The local field potential results indicating strengthened hippocampal-cortical alpha and beta coherence were in good agreement with the fMRI findings. Furthermore, altered expression was found in 20 cortical genes, several of which are involved in neuronal signal transmission, but no gene expression changes were noted in the hippocampus.Isoflurane induced prolonged changes in thalamo-cortical and hippocampal-cortical function and expression of genes contributing to signal transmission in the cortex. Further studies are required to investigate whether these changes are associated with the postoperative behavioral and cognitive symptoms commonly observed in patients and animals.

BackgroundTheta-band neuronal oscillations in the prefrontal cortex are associated with several cognitive functions. Oscillatory phase is an important correlate of excitability and phase synchrony mediates information transfer between neuronal populations oscillating at that frequency. The ability to extract and exploit the prefrontal theta rhythm in real time in humans would facilitate insight into neurophysiological mechanisms of cognitive processes involving the prefrontal cortex, and development of brain-state-dependent stimulation for therapeutic applications.ObjectivesWe investigate individual source-space beamforming-based estimation of the prefrontal theta oscillation as a method to target specific phases of the ongoing theta oscillations in the human dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) with real-time EEG-triggered transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Different spatial filters for extracting the prefrontal theta oscillation from EEG signals are compared and additional signal quality criteria are assessed to take into account the dynamics of this cortical oscillation.MethodsTwenty two healthy participants were recruited for anatomical MRI scans and EEG recordings with 18 composing the final analysis. We calculated individual spatial filters based on EEG beamforming in source space. The extracted EEG signal was then used to simulate real-time phase-detection and quantify the accuracy as compared to post-hoc phase estimates. Different spatial filters and triggering parameters were compared. Finally, we validated the feasibility of this approach by actual real-time triggering of TMS pulses at different phases of the prefrontal theta oscillation.ResultsHigher phase-detection accuracy was achieved using individualized source-based spatial filters, as compared to an average or standard Laplacian filter, and also by detecting and avoiding periods of low theta amplitude and periods containing a phase reset. Using optimized parameters, prefrontal theta-phase synchronized TMS of DMPFC was achieved with an accuracy of ±55°.ConclusionThis study demonstrates the feasibility of triggering TMS pulses during different phases of the ongoing prefrontal theta oscillation in real time. This method is relevant for brain state-dependent stimulation in human studies of cognition. It will also enable new personalized therapeutic repetitive TMS protocols for more effective treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Background and purpose — Unnecessary radiographic and clinical follow-ups are common in treatment of pediatric fractures. We hypothesized that follow-up radiographs are unnecessary to monitor union of physeal fractures of the distal tibia. Patients and methods — All 224 (147 boys) children under 16 years old treated for a physeal fracture of the distal tibia during a 5-year period (2010–14) in Helsinki Children’s Hospital were included in this study. Peterson type II fractures comprised 55% and transitional fractures (Tillaux and Triplane) 20% of all injuries. Fracture displacement and alignment was measured. Type and place of treatment was recorded. Number of follow-up radiographs and outpatient visits was calculated and their clinical significance was assessed. Results — 109 children had fractures with < 2 mm displacement and no angulation. The other 115 children’s mean fracture displacement was 6 mm (2–28). 54% of all children were treated by casting in situ in the emergency room, 20% with manipulation under anesthesia and 26% with surgery (internal 57, external fixation 2). Median 3 (1–7) follow-up appointments and median 3 (0–6) radiographs were taken. Follow-up radiographs at or before cast removal did not alter treatment in any of the patients. 223 patients’ fractures healed within 4–9 weeks in good alignment (≤ 5° angulation). Interpretation — Routine radiographic follow-up is unnecessary to monitor alignment and union of physeal fractures of the distal tibia.

Introduction Distal radius is the most common site of fracture in children, comprising 23%–31% of all paediatric fractures. Approximately one-fifth of these fractures are displaced. Completely displaced distal metaphyseal radius fractures in children have traditionally been treated with closed reduction. Recent evidence suggests that correcting the shortening in over-riding distal metaphyseal radius fractures is not necessary in prepubertal children. To date, no published randomised controlled trial (RCT) has compared treatment of these fractures in children by casting the fracture in bayonet position to reduction and pin fixation.Methods and analysis We will conduct an RCT to compare the outcomes of casting the fracture in bayonet position in children under 11 years of age to reduction and percutaneous pin fixation. 60 patients will be randomly assigned to casting or surgery groups. We have two primary outcomes. The first is ratio (injured side/non-injured side) in the total active forearm rotation and the second is ratio (injured side/non-injured side) in total active range of motion of the wrist in the flexion–extension plane at 6 months. The secondary outcomes will include axial radiographic alignment, passive extension of the wrists, grip strength and length of forearms and hands, patient-reported outcome QuickDASH and pain questionnaire PedsQL. Patients not willing to participate in the RCT will be asked to participate in a prospective cohort. Patients not eligible for randomisation will be asked to participate in a non-eligible cohort. These cohorts are included to enhance the external validity of the results of the RCT. Our null hypothesis is that the results of the primary outcome measures in the casting group are non-inferior to surgery group.Ethics and dissemination The institutional review board of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District has approved the protocol. “Social orders, tensions and saviourism” represents an ethnography on the implementation of Finnish national policy on Roma. It draws upon two and half years of fieldwork working in a Roma project. The name of the study, “Social orders, tensions and saviourism,” reflects the core findings of the study. It argues that the neoliberal policy-making applied to Romani people have an ideological premise that is incongruous with their social realities causing tensions among participants and formulating a form of saviourism. Beamformers are applied for estimating spatiotemporal characteristics of neuronal sources underlying measured MEG/EEG signals. Several MEG analysis toolboxes include an implementation of a linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) beamformer. However, differences in implementations and in their results complicate the selection and application of beamformers and may hinder their wider adoption in research and clinical use. Additionally, combinations of different MEG sensor types (such as magnetometers and planar gradiometers) and application of preprocessing methods for interference suppression, such as signal space separation (SSS), can affect the results in different ways for different implementations. So far, a systematic evaluation of the different implementations has not been performed. Here, we compared the localization performance of the LCMV beamformer pipelines in four widely used open-source toolboxes (MNE-Python, FieldTrip, DAiSS (SPM12), and Brainstorm) using datasets both with and without SSS interference suppression.We analyzed MEG data that were i) simulated, ii) recorded from a static and moving phantom, and iii) recorded from a healthy volunteer receiving auditory, visual, and somatosensory stimulation. We also investigated the effects of SSS and the combination of the magnetometer and gradiometer signals. We quantified how localization error and point-spread volume vary with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in all four toolboxes.When applied carefully to MEG data with a typical SNR (3–15 ​dB), all four toolboxes localized the sources reliably; however, they differed in their sensitivity to preprocessing parameters. As expected, localizations were highly unreliable at very low SNR, but we found high localization error also at very high SNRs for the first three toolboxes while Brainstorm showed greater robustness but with lower spatial resolution. We also found that the SNR improvement offered by SSS led to more accurate localization.

Electroencephalography (EEG) concurrently collected with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is heavily distorted by the repetitive gradient coil switching during the fMRI acquisition. The performance of the typical template-based gradient artifact suppression method can be suboptimal because the artifact changes over time. Gradient artifact residuals also impede the subsequent suppression of ballistocardiography artifacts.Here we propose recording continuous EEG with temporally sparse fast fMRI (fast fMRI-EEG) to minimize the EEG artifacts caused by MRI gradient coil switching without significantly compromising the field-of-view and spatiotemporal resolution of fMRI. Using simultaneous multi-slice inverse imaging to achieve whole-brain fMRI with isotropic 5-mm resolution in 0.1 ​s, and performing these acquisitions once every 2 ​s, we have 95% of the duty cycle available to record EEG with substantially less gradient artifact. We found that the standard deviation of EEG signals over the entire acquisition period in fast fMRI-EEG was reduced to 54% of that in conventional concurrent echo-planar imaging (EPI) and EEG recordings (EPI-EEG) across participants. When measuring 15-Hz steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), the baseline-normalized oscillatory neural response in fast fMRI-EEG was 2.5-fold of that in EPI-EEG. The functional MRI responses associated with the SSVEP delineated by EPI and fast fMRI were similar in the spatial distribution, the elicited waveform, and detection power. Sparsely interleaved fast fMRI-EEG provides high-quality EEG without substantially compromising the quality of fMRI in evoked response measurements, and has the potential utility for applications where the onset of the target stimulus cannot be precisely determined, such as epilepsy.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in animal models provide invaluable information regarding normal and abnormal brain function, especially when combined with complementary stimulation and recording techniques. The echo planar imaging (EPI) pulse sequence is the most common choice for fMRI investigations, but it has several shortcomings. EPI is one of the loudest sequences and very prone to movement and susceptibility-induced artefacts, making it suboptimal for awake imaging. Additionally, the fast gradient-switching of EPI induces disrupting currents in simultaneous electrophysiological recordings. Therefore, we investigated whether the unique features of Multi-Band SWeep Imaging with Fourier Transformation (MB-SWIFT) overcome these issues at a high 9.4 T magnetic field, making it a potential alternative to EPI. MB-SWIFT had 32-dB and 20-dB lower peak and average sound pressure levels, respectively, than EPI with typical fMRI parameters. Body movements had little to no effect on MB-SWIFT images or functional connectivity analyses, whereas they severely affected EPI data. The minimal gradient steps of MB-SWIFT induced significantly lower currents in simultaneous electrophysiological recordings than EPI, and there were no electrode-induced distortions in MB-SWIFT images. An independent component analysis of the awake rat functional connectivity data obtained with MB-SWIFT resulted in near whole-brain level functional parcellation, and simultaneous electrophysiological and fMRI measurements in isoflurane-anesthetized rats indicated that MB-SWIFT signal is tightly linked to neuronal resting-state activity. Therefore, we conclude that the MB-SWIFT sequence is a robust preclinical brain mapping tool that can overcome many of the drawbacks of conventional EPI fMRI at high magnetic fields.

We explored whether DNA-phylogeny-based and morphology-based genus concepts can be reconciled in the basidiomycete family Phanerochaetaceae. Our results show that macromorphology of fruiting bodies and hymenophore construction do not reflect monophyletic groups. However, by integrating micromorphology and re-defining genera, harmonization of DNA phylogeny and morphological genus concepts is possible in most cases. In the case of one genus (Phlebiopsis), our genetic markers could not resolve genus limits satisfactorily and a clear morphological definition could not be identified. We combine extended species sampling, microscopic studies of fruiting bodies and phylogenetic analyses of ITS, nLSU and rpb1 to revise genus concepts. Three new polypore genera are ascribed to the Phanerochaetaceae: Oxychaete gen. nov. (type Oxyporus cervinogilvus), Phanerina gen. nov. (type Ceriporia mellea), and Riopa (including Ceriporia metamorphosa and Riopa pudens sp. nov.). Phlebiopsis is extended to include Dentocorticium pilatii, further species of Hjortstamia and the monotypic polypore genus Castanoporus. The polypore Ceriporia inflata is combined into Phanerochaete. The identity of the type species of the genus Riopa, R. davidii, has been misinterpreted in the current literature. The species has been included in Ceriporia as a species of its own or placed in synonymy with Ceriporia camaresiana. The effort to properly define R. davidii forced us to study Ceriporia more widely. In the process we identified five closely related Ceriporia species that belong to the true Ceriporia clade (Irpicaceae). We describe those species here, and introduce the Ceriporia pierii group. We also select a lectotype and an epitype for Riopa metamorphosa and neotypes for Sporotrichum aurantiacum and S. aurantium, the type species of the anamorphic genus Sporotrichum, and recommend that teleomorphic Riopa is conserved against it.

Interest in studying experiences has grown rapidly; however, little attention has been paid to the applicability of qualitative methods for capturing the service experience in children’s health care. This study examined and compared three data collection methods to capture the multidimensional service experience of child patients and their families: video diaries with child patients, narrative interviews with parents of a child patient, and semistructured interviews with health-care professionals working with child patients. The methods were analyzed with respect to their benefits and limitations and their applicability for capturing the multidimensional service experience presented by service experience co-creation framework, including the temporal, factual, spatial, locus, control, and organizational dimensions. The key findings are as follows: (A) The video diary method has the potential to capture the temporally broad and spatially complex phenomenon of child patients’ service experience and enables researchers to capture service experience created beyond the hospital setting (e.g., through hobbies or in school). (B) Narratives with parents have the potential to capture the temporal, spatial, locus, and organizational dimensions through stories and are well-suited for mapping children’s experiences and the actors influencing them. (C) Semistructured interviews with health-care professionals have the potential to capture a generalized but temporally narrow view of the service experience of child patients, concentrating on experiences within hospital settings. This is beneficial for developing health-care service providers’ actions. Structured analysis and comparison of methods guides researchers to select appropriate methods to take a complementary approach in the understanding of experiences in the context of children’s health care.

Despite the vast research on Roma in Europe and beyond, little has been written about Roma agency from a perspective that focuses on manifold dynamics of power. Having worked for two years on the Finnish Roma Inclusion Project in a dual role as ethnographer and project worker has inspired me to rethink concepts of power and to create an alternative narrative of the experience of marginalized and discriminated Finnish Kaale Roma. Encouraged by the current paradigm shift in Romani Studies (which increasingly focuses on Roma agency instead of objectifying the population), this paper explores Kaale power dynamics as part of the social order and empirically demonstrates two parallel and antagonist systems of power exercised by Roma: one that stems from the population’s traditional cultural customs and the other from Pentecostal/charismatic Christianity, a growing trend among the Finnish Kaale. The purpose of this article is to underline Roma agency within the frame of national Roma policy practices in Finland.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful noninvasive tool for studying spontaneous resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) in laboratory animals. Brain function can be significantly affected by generally used anesthetics, however, rendering the need for awake imaging. Only a few different awake animal habituation protocols have been presented, and there is a critical need for practical and improved low-stress techniques. Here we demonstrate a novel restraint approach for awake rat RSFC studies. Our custom-made 3D printed restraint kit is compatible with a standard Bruker Biospin MRI rat bed, rat brain receiver coil, and volume transmitter coil. We also implemented a progressive habituation protocol aiming to minimize the stress experienced by the rats, and compared RSFC between awake, lightly sedated, and isoflurane-anesthetized rats. Our results demonstrated that the 3D printed restraint kit was suitable for RSFC studies of awake rats. During the short 4-day habituation period, the plasma corticosterone concentration, movement, and heart rate, which were measured as stress indicators, decreased significantly, indicating adaptation to the restraint protocol. Additionally, 10 days after the awake MRI session, rats exhibited no signs of depression or anxiety based on open-field and sucrose preference behavioral tests. The RSFC data revealed significant changes in the thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical networks between the awake, lightly sedated, and anesthetized groups, emphasizing the need for awake imaging. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of our custom-made 3D printed restraint kit. Using this kit, we found that isoflurane markedly affected brain connectivity compared with that in awake rats, and that the effect was less pronounced, but still significant, when light isoflurane sedation was used instead.
