Abstract

Microarchitectural optimizations are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring performance scalability in future technology nodes. However, recent attacks have demonstrated that microarchitectural optimizations, which were assumed to be secure, can be exploited. Moreover, new attacks surface at a rapid pace limiting the scope of existing defenses. These developments prompt the need to review microarchitectural optimizations with an emphasis on security, understand the attack landscape and the potential defense strategies. We analyze timing-based side-channel attacks targeting a diverse set of microarchitectural optimizations. We provide a framework for analysing non-transient and transient attacks, which highlights the similarities. We identify the four root causes of timing-based side-channel attacks: determinism, sharing, access violation and information flow, through our systematic analysis. Our key insight is that a subset (or all) of the root causes are exploited by attacks and eliminating any of the exploited root causes, in any attack step, is enough to provide protection. Leveraging our framework, we systematize existing defenses and show that they target these root causes in the different attack steps.

8. CBP: Coordinated management of cache partitioning, bandwidth partitioning and prefetch throttling

Abstract

Reducing the average memory access time is crucial for improving the performance of applications running on multi-core architectures. With workload consolidation this becomes increasingly challenging due to shared resource contention. Techniques for partitioning of shared resources - cache and bandwidth - and prefetching throttling have been proposed to mitigate contention and reduce the average memory access time. However, existing proposals only employ a single or a subset of these techniques and are therefore not able to exploit the full potential of coordinated management of cache, bandwidth and prefetching. Our characterization results show that application performance, in several cases, is sensitive to prefetching, cache and bandwidth allocation. Furthermore, the results show that managing these together provides higher performance potential during workload consolidation as it enables more resource trade-offs. In this paper, we propose CBP a coordination mechanism for dynamically managing prefetching throttling, cache and bandwidth partitioning, in order to reduce average memory access time and improve performance. CBP works by employing individual resource managers to determine the appropriate setting for each resource and a coordinating mechanism in order to enable inter-resource trade-offs. Our evaluation on a 16-core CMP shows that CBP, on average, improves performance by 11% compared to the state-of-the-art technique that manages cache partitioning and prefetching and by 50% compared to the baseline without cache partitioning, bandwidth partitioning and prefetch throttling.

10. A GPU Register File using Static Data Compression

Abstract

GPUs rely on large register files to unlock thread-level parallelism for high throughput. Unfortunately, large register files are power hungry, making it important to seek for new approaches to improve their utilization. This paper introduces a new register file organization for efficient register-packing of narrow integer and floating-point operands designed to leverage on advances in static analysis. We show that the hardware/software co-designed register file organization yields a performance improvement of up to 79%, and 18.6%, on average, at a modest output-quality degradation., Comment: Accepted to ICPP'20

Abstract

The IFLA Trend Report identified five trends that will impact the information environment (IFLA, 2015), such as access to information with new technologies, online education for global learning, hyper-connected communities, and the global information environment. The faculty at San José State University (SJSU) School of Information (iSchool) is engaged in a wide range of activities that focus on these trends--benefiting students, enhancing faculty professional development, and extending the school's impact on the global information environment. The importance of incorporating global perspectives in the curriculum to reflect changes in the way that communities around the world access and share information is the focus of numerous studies. The SJSU iSchool has been an early adopter of various practices to increase the range of international education, outreach, and research initiatives. This article provides examples of curricular, research, and collaborative projects that our faculty has developed, both for our students and for the global community of information professionals. Key initiatives presented include virtually abroad global projects, globalization of LIS curriculum, international LIS internships, international project-based learning, faculty professional development, and international collaborations. Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate the diverse ways the iSchool is addressing the need in higher education to reach across national borders, especially in the information field.

26. Finnish Vocational Education and Training in Comparison: Strengths and Weaknesses

Abstract

The study investigates how the Finnish model of providing initial vocational education and training (IVET) has succeeded in terms of enhancing educational progress and employability. A relatively high level of participation in IVET makes the Finnish model distinctive from those of three other Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. All four Nordic countries have well-organised labour markets and universal types of welfare states. Priority is given to goals related to equal opportunities and social inclusion. At the same time, these countries have different models of IVET. While the study compares the Finnish model of organising IVET to those of other Nordic countries, it also examines the German and UK models, which represent differing societal approaches to IVET. The differences in the outcomes of the IVET systems are described and analysed through reviewing secondary data provided by Eurydice and Eurostat, along with country reports produced in a Nordic comparative project, Nord-VET.

39. Can Abstract Screening Workload Be Reduced Using Text Mining? User Experiences of the Tool Rayyan

Abstract

Background: One time-consuming aspect of conducting systematic reviews is the task of sifting through abstracts to identify relevant studies. One promising approach for reducing this burden uses text mining technology to identify those abstracts that are potentially most relevant for a project, allowing those abstracts to be screened first. Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of the text mining functionality of the abstract screening tool Rayyan. User experiences were collected. Methods: Rayyan was used to screen abstracts for 6 reviews in 2015. After screening 25%, 50%, and 75% of the abstracts, the screeners logged the relevant references identified. A survey was sent to users. Results: After screening half of the search result with Rayyan, 86% to 99% of the references deemed relevant to the study were identified. Of those studies included in the final reports, 96% to 100% were already identified in the first half of the screening process. Users rated Rayyan 4.5 out of 5. Discussion: The text mining function in Rayyan successfully helped reviewers identify relevant studies early in the screening process.

Abstract

A fossil bone from the archaeological site Malu Rosu Giurgiu, in Romania has been analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry to estimate its age by determining its $^{14}$C content. The radiocarbon age of the bone is in agreement with the date obtained by the method for age determination, based on fluorine content.
