Search

Launching and focusing phonon-polaritons present novel opportunities for low-loss guiding of subdiffractionally confined light at the nanoscale. Despite significant efforts to improve control in polaritonic media, focused and spatially confined phonon-polariton waves have only been achieved in the in-plane anisotropic crystals (such as MoO$_3$) and remain elusive in the in-plane isotropic crystals (such as hexagonal boron nitride). In this study, we present a previously unexplored approach to launching phonon-polaritons by employing hBN subwavelength resonators coupled to gold nanoantennas. The integration of gold nanoantennas enables efficient coupling to the far-field component of mid-infrared light, while the geometry of the resonators defines the wavefront curvature, spatial confinement, and focusing of the launched polaritons. Using standard lithographic protocols, we achieve strong field enhancement and resonant mode localization, generating phonon-polaritons with precise spatial definition. Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy reveals the real-space optical contrast of these modes. Semiconductor quantum dots in microcavities are an excellent platform for the efficient generation of indistinguishable single photons. However, their use in a wide range of quantum technologies requires their controlled fabrication and integration in compact closed-cycle cryocoolers, with a key challenge being the efficient and stable extraction of the single photons into a single-mode fiber. Here we report on a novel method for fiber-pigtailing of deterministically fabricated single-photon sources. Our technique allows for nanometer-scale alignment accuracy between the source and a fiber, alignment that persists all the way from room temperature to 2.4 K. We demonstrate high performance of the device under near-resonant optical excitation with g$^{(2)}$(0) = 1.3 %, a photon indistinguishability of 97.5 % and a fibered brightness of 20.8 %. We show that the indistinguishability and single-photon rate are stable for over ten hours of continuous operation in a single cooldown. Moir\'e materials represent strongly interacting electron systems bridging topological and correlated physics. Despite significant advances, decoding wavefunction properties underlying the quantum geometry remains challenging. Here, we utilize polarization-resolved photocurrent measurements to probe magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, leveraging its sensitivity to the Berry connection that encompasses quantum "textures" of electron wavefunctions. Using terahertz light resonant with optical transitions of its flat bands, we observe bulk photocurrents driven by broken symmetries and reveal the interplay between electron interactions and quantum geometry. We observe inversion-breaking gapped states undetectable through quantum transport, sharp changes in the polarization axes caused by interaction-induced band renormalization, and recurring photocurrent patterns at integer fillings of the moir\'e unit cell that track the evolution of quantum geometry through the cascade of phase transitions. The large and tunable terahertz response intrinsic to flat-band systems offers direct insights into the quantum geometry of interacting electrons and paves the way for innovative terahertz quantum technologies.

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) represents a highly tunable, strongly correlated electron system owed to its unique flat electronic bands. However, understanding the single-particle band structure alone has been challenging due to complex lattice reconstruction effects and a lack of spectroscopic measurements over a broad energy range. Here, we probe the band structure of TBG around the magic angle using infrared spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal spectral features originating from interband transitions whose energies are uniquely defined by the twist angle. By combining with quantum transport, we connect spectral features over a broad energy range (10 to 700 meV) spanning several superlattice minibands and track their evolution with twist angle. We compare our data with calculations of the band structures obtained via the continuum model and find good agreement only when considering a variation of interlayer/intralayer tunnelling parameters with the twist angle. Our analysis suggests that the magic angle also shifts due to lattice relaxation, and is better defined for a wide angular range from 0.9{\deg} to 1.1{\deg}. Our work provides spectroscopic insights into TBG's band structure and offers an optical fingerprint of the magic angle for screening heterostructures before nanofabrication.

Ever since the initial experimental observation of correlated insulators and superconductivity in the flat Dirac bands of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, a search for the microscopic description that explains its strong electronic interactions has begun. While the seemingly disagreeing electronic transport and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments suggest a dichotomy between local and extended electronic orbitals, definitive experimental evidence merging the two patterns together has been much sought after. Here, we report on the local photothermoelectric measurements in the flat electronic bands of twisted symmetric trilayer graphene (TSTG). We use a cryogenic scanning near-field optical microscope with an oscillating atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip irradiated by the infrared photons to create a nanoscopic hot spot in the planar samples, which generates a photocurrent that we probe globally. We observe a breakdown of the non-interacting Mott formalism at low temperatures (10K), signaling the importance of the electronic interactions. Our measurements reveal an overall negative offset of the Seebeck coefficient and significant peaks of the local photovoltage values at all positive integer fillings of the TSTG's moir\'e superlattice, further indicating a substantial deviation from the classical two-band semiconductor Seebeck response. We explain these observations using the interacting topological heavy-fermion model. In addition, our data reveal a spatial variation of the relative interaction strength dependent on the measured local twist angle (1.2{\deg} - 1.6{\deg}). Our findings provide experimental evidence of heavy fermion behaviour in the topological flat bands of moir\'e graphene and epitomize an avenue to apply local thermoelectric measurements to other strongly correlated materials in the disorder-free limit.

Quantum computing aims at exploiting quantum phenomena to efficiently perform computations that are unfeasible even for the most powerful classical supercomputers. Among the promising technological approaches, photonic quantum computing offers the advantages of low decoherence, information processing with modest cryogenic requirements, and native integration with classical and quantum networks. To date, quantum computing demonstrations with light have implemented specific tasks with specialized hardware, notably Gaussian Boson Sampling which permitted quantum computational advantage to be reached. Here we report a first user-ready general-purpose quantum computing prototype based on single photons. The device comprises a high-efficiency quantum-dot single-photon source feeding a universal linear optical network on a reconfigurable chip for which hardware errors are compensated by a machine-learned transpilation process. Our full software stack allows remote control of the device to perform computations via logic gates or direct photonic operations. For gate-based computation we benchmark one-, two- and three-qubit gates with state-of-the art fidelities of $99.6\pm0.1 \%$, $93.8\pm0.6 \%$ and $86\pm1.2 \%$ respectively. We also implement a variational quantum eigensolver, which we use to calculate the energy levels of the hydrogen molecule with high accuracy. For photon native computation, we implement a classifier algorithm using a $3$-photon-based quantum neural network and report a first $6$-photon Boson Sampling demonstration on a universal reconfigurable integrated circuit. Finally, we report on a first heralded 3-photon entanglement generation, a key milestone toward measurement-based quantum computing.

Second-order superlattices form when moir\'e superlattices of similar periodicities interfere with each other, leading to even larger superlattice periodicities. These crystalline structures have been engineered utilizing two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) under specific alignment conditions. Such specific alignment has shown to play a crucial role in facilitating correlation-driven topological phases featuring the quantized anomalous Hall effect. While signatures of second-order superlattices have been identified in magnetotransport experiments, any real-space visualization is lacking to date. In this work, we present \NT{electronic transport measurements and cryogenic nanoscale photovoltage (PV) measurements} that reveal a second-order superlattice in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene closely aligned to hBN. This is evidenced by long-range periodic photovoltage modulations across the entire sample backed by the corresponding electronic transport features. Supported by theoretical calculations, our experimental data show that even minuscule strain and twist-angle variations on the order of 0.01$^\circ$ can lead to a drastic change of the second-order superlattice structure between local one-dimensional, square or triangular types. Our real-space observations therefore serve as a strong `magnifying glass' for strain and twist angle and can shed new light on the mechanisms responsible for the breaking of spatial symmetries in twisted bilayer graphene, and pave an avenue to engineer long-range superlattice structures in 2D materials using strain fields., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Reliable randomness is a core ingredient in algorithms and applications ranging from numerical simulations to statistical sampling and cryptography. The outcomes of measurements on entangled quantum states can violate Bell inequalities, thus guaranteeing their intrinsic randomness. This constitutes the basis for certified randomness generation. However, this certification requires spacelike separated devices, making it unfit for a compact apparatus. Here we provide a general method for certified randomness generation on a small-scale application-ready device and perform an integrated photonic demonstration combining a solid-state emitter and a glass chip. In contrast to most existing certification protocols, which in the absence of spacelike separation are vulnerable to loopholes inherent to realistic devices, the protocol we implement accounts for information leakage and is thus compatible with emerging compact scalable devices. We demonstrate a 2-qubit photonic device that achieves the highest standard in randomness yet is cut out for real-world applications. The full 94.5-hour-long stabilized process harnesses a bright and stable single-photon quantum-dot based source, feeding into a reconfigurable photonic chip, with stability in the milliradian range on the implemented phases and consistent indistinguishability of the entangled photons above 93%. Long-distance spin transport through anti-ferromagnetic insulators (AFMIs) is a long-standing goal of spintronics research. Unlike conventional spintronics systems, monolayer graphene in quantum Hall regime (QH) offers an unprecedented tuneability of spin-polarization and charge carrier density in QH edge states. Here, using gate-controlled QH edges as spin-dependent injectors and detectors in an all-graphene electrical circuit, for the first time we demonstrate a selective tuning of ambipolar spin transport through graphene $\nu$=0 AFMIs. By modulating polarities of the excitation bias, magnetic fields, and charge carriers that host opposite chiralities, we show that the difference between spin chemical potentials of adjacent edge channels in the spin-injector region is crucial in tuning spin-transport observed across graphene AFMI. We demonstrate that non-local response vanishes upon reversing directions of the co-propagating edge channels when the spin-filters in our devices are no longer selective for a particular spin-polarization. Our results establish a versatile set of methods to tune pure spin transport via an anti-ferromagnetic media and open a pathway to explore their applications for a broad field of antiferromagnetic spintronics research.

Charge carriers in magic angle graphene come in eight flavors described by a combination of their spin, valley, and sublattice polarizations. When the inversion and time reversal symmetries are broken by the substrate or by strong interactions, the degeneracy of the flavors can be lifted and their corresponding bands can be filled sequentially. Due to their non-trivial band topology and Berry curvature, each of the bands is classified by a topological Chern number, leading to the quantum anomalous Hall and Chern insulator states at integer fillings $\nu$ of the bands. It has been recently predicted, however, that depending on the local atomic-scale arrangements of the graphene and the encapsulating hBN lattices, rather than being a global topological invariant, the Chern number C may become position dependent, altering transport and magnetic properties of the itinerant electrons. Using a SQUID-on-tip, we directly image the nanoscale Berry-curvature-induced equilibrium orbital magnetism, the polarity of which is governed by the local Chern number, and detect its two constituent components associated with the drift and the self-rotation of the electronic wave packets. At $\nu=1$, we observe local zero-field valley-polarized Chern insulators forming a mosaic of microscopic patches of C=-1, 0, or 1, governed by the local sublattice polarization, consistent with predictions. Upon further filling, we find a first-order phase transition due to recondensation of electrons from valley K to K', which leads to irreversible flips of the local Chern number and the magnetization, and to the formation of valley domain walls giving rise to hysteretic global anomalous Hall resistance. The findings shed new light on the structure and dynamics of topological phases and call for exploration of the controllable formation of flavor domain walls and their utilization in twistronic devices., Comment: 29 pages, 5 main text figures and 8 supplementary figures

How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent and Higgs-boson mass mechanisms is a common goal of three interdependent approaches -- continuum QCD phenomenology, lattice-regularised QCD, and the global analysis of parton distributions -- linked to experimental measurements of hadron structure. Experimentally, the foreseen electron-ion collider will enable a revolution in our ability to study pion and kaon structure, accessed by scattering from the "meson cloud" of the proton through the Sullivan process. With the goal of enabling a suite of measurements that can address these questions, we examine key reactions to identify the critical detector system requirements needed to map tagged pion and kaon cross sections over a wide range of kinematics. The excellent prospects for extracting pion structure function and form factor data are shown, and similar prospects for kaon structure are discussed in the context of a worldwide programme. Successful completion of the programme outlined herein will deliver deep, far-reaching insights into the emergence of pions and kaons, their properties, and their role as QCD's Goldstone boson modes., Comment: 73 pages, 27 figures

The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has unveiled a rich variety of superconducting, magnetic and topologically nontrivial phases. The existence of all these phases in one material, and their tunability, has opened new pathways for the creation of unusual gate tunable junctions. However, the required conditions for their creation - gate induced transitions between phases in zero magnetic field - have so far not been achieved. Here, we report on the first experimental demonstration of a device that is both a zero-field Chern insulator and a superconductor. The Chern insulator occurs near moire cell filling factor v = +1 in a hBN non-aligned MATBG device and manifests itself via an anomalous Hall effect. The insulator has Chern number C = +-1 and a relatively high Curie temperature of Tc = 4.5 K. Gate tuning away from this state exposes strong superconducting phases with critical temperatures of up to Tc = 3.5 K. In a perpendicular magnetic field above B > 0.5 T we observe a transition of the /C/= +1 Chern insulator from Chern number C = +-1 to C = 3, characterized by a quantized Hall plateau with Ryx = h/3e2. These observations show that interaction-induced symmetry breaking in MATBG leads to zero-field ground states that include almost degenerate and closely competing Chern insulators, and that states with larger Chern numbers couple most strongly to the B-field. By providing the first demonstration of a system that allows gate-induced transitions between magnetic and superconducting phases, our observations mark a major milestone in the creation of a new generation of quantum electronics.

We introduce a new method to continuously map inhomogeneities of a moir\'e lattice and apply it to large-area topographic images we measure on open-device twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We show that the variation in the twist angle of a TBG device, which is frequently conjectured to be the reason for differences between devices with a supposed similar twist angle, is about 0.08{\deg} around the average of 2.02{\deg} over areas of several hundred nm, comparable to devices encapsulated between hBN slabs. We distinguish between an effective twist angle and local anisotropy and relate the latter to heterostrain. Our results imply that for our devices, twist angle heterogeneity has a roughly equal effect to the electronic structure as local strain. In transition metal dichalcogenides layers of atomic scale thickness, the electron-hole Coulomb interaction potential is strongly influenced by the sharp discontinuity of the dielectric function across the layer plane. This feature results in peculiar non-hydrogenic excitonic states, in which exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities are predicted to be enhanced as compared to their hydrogenic counterpart. To demonstrate this enhancement, we performed optical transmission spectroscopy of a MoSe$_2$ monolayer placed in the strong coupling regime with the mode of an optical microcavity, and analyzed the results quantitatively with a nonlinear input-output theory. We find an enhancement of both the exciton-exciton interaction and of the excitonic fermionic saturation with respect to realistic values expected in the hydrogenic picture. Such results demonstrate that unconventional excitons in MoSe$_2$ are highly favourable for the implementation of large exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities, potentially working up to room temperature.

Transport experiments in twisted bilayer graphene revealed multiple superconducting domes separated by correlated insulating states. These properties are generally associated with strongly correlated states in a flat mini-band of the hexagonal moir\'e superlattice as it was predicted by band structure calculations. Evidence for such a flat band comes from local tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements, reporting two or more sharp peaks in the density of states that may be associated with closely spaced van Hove singularities. Direct momentum resolved measurements proved difficult though. Here, we combine different imaging techniques and angle resolved photoemission with simultaneous real and momentum space resolution (nano-ARPES) to directly map the band dispersion in twisted bilayer graphene devices near charge neutrality. Our experiments reveal large areas with homogeneous twist angle that support a flat band with spectral weight that is highly localized in momentum space. The flat band is separated from the dispersive Dirac bands which show multiple moir\'e hybridization gaps. The coexistence of superconducting and correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene prompts fascinating questions about the relationship of these orders. Independent control of the microscopic mechanisms governing these phases could help uncover their individual roles and shed light on their intricate interplay. Here we report on direct tuning of electronic interactions in this system by changing its separation from a metallic screening layer. We observe quenching of correlated insula-tors in devices with screening layer separations that are smaller than a typical Wannier orbital size of 15nm, and with the twist angles slightly deviating from the magic value 1.10 plus(minus) 0.05 degrees. Upon extinction of the insulating orders, the vacated phase space is taken over by superconducting domes that feature critical temperatures comparable to those in the devices with strong insulators. In addition, we find that insulators at half-filling can reappear in small out-of-plane magnetic fields of 0.4 T, giving rise to quantized Hall states with a Chern number of 2. Our study suggests reexamination of the often-assumed mother-child relation between the insulating and superconducting phases in moire graphene, and illustrates a new approach to directly probe microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in strongly-correlated systems.

The electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) can be dramatically different from those of a single graphene layer, in particular when the two layers are rotated relative to each other by a small angle. TBG has recently attracted a great deal of interest, sparked by the discovery of correlated insulating and superconducting states, for twist angle $\theta$ close to a so-called 'magic angle' $\approx 1.1{\deg}$. In this work, we unveil, via near-field optical microscopy, a collective plasmon mode in charge-neutral TBG near the magic angle, which is dramatically different from the ordinary single-layer graphene intraband plasmon. In selected regions of our samples, we find a gapped collective mode with linear dispersion, akin to the bulk magnetoplasmons of a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas. We interpret these as interband plasmons and associate those with the optical transitions between quasi-localized states originating from the moir\'e superlattice. Surprisingly, we find a higher plasmon group velocity than expected, which implies an enhanced strength of the corresponding optical transition. This points to a weaker interlayer coupling in the AA regions. Superconductivity often occurs close to broken-symmetry parent states and is especially common in doped magnetic insulators. When twisted close to a magic relative orientation angle near 1 degree, bilayer graphene has flat moire superlattice minibands that have emerged as a rich and highly tunable source of strong correlation physics, notably the appearance of superconductivity close to interaction-induced insulating states. Here we report on the fabrication of bilayer graphene devices with exceptionally uniform twist angles. We show that the reduction in twist angle disorder reveals insulating states at all integer occupancies of the four-fold spin/valley degenerate flat conduction and valence bands, i.e. at moire band filling factors nu = 0, +(-) 1, +(-) 2, +(-) 3, and superconductivity below critical temperatures as high as 3 K close to - 2 filling. We also observe three new superconducting domes at much lower temperatures close to the nu = 0 and nu = +(-) 1 insulating states. Interestingly, at nu = +(-) 1 we find states with non-zero Chern numbers. For nu = - 1 the insulating state exhibits a sharp hysteretic resistance enhancement when a perpendicular magnetic field above 3.6 tesla is applied, consistent with a field driven phase transition. Our study shows that symmetry-broken states, interaction driven insulators, and superconducting domes are common across the entire moire flat bands, including near charge neutrality.

Spin-orbit coupling is a fundamental mechanism that connects the spin of a charge carrier with its momentum. Likewise, in the optical domain, a synthetic spin-orbit coupling is accessible, for instance, by engineering optical anisotropies in photonic materials. Both, akin, yield the possibility to create devices directly harnessing spin- and polarization as information carriers. Atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides provide a new material platform which promises intrinsic spin-valley Hall features both for free carriers, two-particle excitations (excitons), as well as for photons. In such materials, the spin of an exciton is closely linked to the high-symmetry point in reciprocal space it emerges from. Here, we demonstrate, that spin, and hence valley selective propagation is accessible in an atomically thin layer of MoSe2, which is strongly coupled to a microcavity photon mode. We engineer a wire-like device, where we can clearly trace the flow, and the helicity of exciton-polaritons expanding along a channel. By exciting a coherent superposition of K and K- tagged polaritons, we observe valley selective expansion of the polariton cloud without neither any applied external magnetic fields nor coherent Rayleigh scattering. Unlike the valley Hall effect for TMDC excitons, the observed optical valley Hall effect (OVHE) strikingly occurs on a macroscopic scale, and clearly reveals the potential for applications in spin-valley locked photonic devices.

The celebrated phenomenon of quantum Hall effect has recently been generalized from transport of conserved charges to that of other approximately conserved state variables, including spin and valley, which are characterized by spin- or valley-polarized boundary states with different chiralities. Here, we report a new class of quantum Hall effect in ABA-stacked graphene trilayers (TLG), the quantum parity Hall (QPH) effect, in which boundary channels are distinguished by even or odd parity under the systems mirror reflection symmetry. At the charge neutrality point and a small perpendicular magnetic field $B_{\perp}$, the longitudinal conductance $\sigma_{xx}$ is first quantized to $4e^2/h$, establishing the presence of four edge channels. As $B_{\perp}$ increases, $\sigma_{xx}$ first decreases to $2e^2/h$, indicating spin-polarized counter-propagating edge states, and then to approximately $0$. These behaviors arise from level crossings between even and odd parity bulk Landau levels, driven by exchange interactions with the underlying Fermi sea, which favor an ordinary insulator ground state in the strong $B_{\perp}$ limit, and a spin-polarized state at intermediate fields. The transitions between spin-polarized and unpolarized states can be tuned by varying Zeeman energy. Our findings demonstrate a topological phase that is protected by a gate-controllable symmetry and sensitive to Coulomb interactions.

Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities constitute the archetypal realization of a quantum fluid of light. Under coherent optical drive, remarkable effects such as superfluidity, dark solitons or the nucleation of hydrodynamic vortices have been observed. These phenomena can be all understood as a specific manifestation of collective excitations forming on top of the polariton condensate. In this work, we performed a Brillouin scattering experiment to measure their dispersion relation $\omega(\mathbf{k})$ directly. The result, such as a speed of sound which is apparently twice too low, cannot be explained upon considering the polariton condensate alone. In a combined theoretical and experimental analysis, we demonstrate that the presence of a reservoir of long-lived excitons interacting with polaritons has a dramatic influence on the nature and characteristic of the quantum fluid, and that it explains our measurement quantitatively. This work clarifies the role of such a reservoir in the different polariton hydrodynamics phenomena occurring under resonant optical drive. It also provides an unambiguous tool to determine the condensate-to-reservoir fraction in the quantum fluid, and sets an accurate framework to approach novel ideas for polariton-based quantum-optical applications.

As a 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor with magnetic ordering, atomically thin chromium triiodide is the latest addition to the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. However, realistic exploration of CrI3-based devices and heterostructures is challenging, due to its extreme instability under ambient conditions. Here we present Raman characterization of CrI3, and demonstrate that the main degradation pathway of CrI3 is the photocatalytic substitution of iodine by water. While simple encapsulation by Al2O3, PMMA and hexagonal BN (hBN) only leads to modest reduction in degradation rate, minimizing exposure of light markedly improves stability, and CrI3 sheets sandwiched between hBN layers are air-stable for >10 days. By monitoring the transfer characteristics of CrI3/graphene heterostructure over the course of degradation, we show that the aquachromium solution hole-dopes graphene., Comment: 4 figures

As a high mobility two-dimensional semiconductor with strong structural and electronic anisotropy, atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) provides a new playground for investigating the quantum Hall (QH) effect, including outstanding questions such as the functional dependence of Landau level (LL) gaps on magnetic field B, and possible anisotropic fractional QH states. Using encapsulating few-layer BP transistors with mobility up to 55,000 cm2/Vs, we extract LL gaps over an exceptionally wide range of B for QH states at filling factors {\nu}=-1 to -4, which are determined to be linear in B, thus resolving a controversy raised by its anisotropy. Furthermore, a fractional QH state at {\nu}~ -4/3 and an additional feature at -0.56+/- 0.1 are observed, underscoring BP as a tunable 2D platform for exploring electron interactions.

The use of relative twist angle between adjacent atomic layers in a van der Waals heterostructure, has emerged as a new degree of freedom to tune electronic and optoelectronic properties of devices based on 2D materials. Using ABA-stacked trilayer (TLG) graphene as the model system, we show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the band structures of 2D materials are systematically tunable depending on their relative alignment angle between hexagonal BN (hBN), even at very large twist angles. Moreover, addition or removal of the hBN substrate results in an inversion of the K and K' valley in TLG's lowest Landau level (LL). Our work illustrates the critical role played by substrates in van der Waals heterostructures and opens the door towards band structure modification and valley control via substrate and twist angle engineering.

Antiferromagnetic insulators (AFMI) are robust against stray fields, and their intrinsic dynamics could enable ultrafast magneto-optics and ultrascaled magnetic information processing. Low dissipation, long distance spin transport and electrical manipulation of antiferromagnetic order are much sought-after goals of spintronics research. Here, we report the first experimental evidence of robust long-distance spin transport through an AFMI, in our case the gate-controlled, canted antiferromagnetic (CAF) state that appears at the charge neutrality point of graphene in the presence of an external magnetic field. Utilizing gate-controlled quantum Hall (QH) edge states as spin-dependent injectors and detectors, we observe large, non-local electrical signals across a 5 micron-long, insulating channel only when it is biased into the nu=0 CAF state. Among possible transport mechanisms, spin superfluidity in an antiferromagnetic state gives the most consistent interpretation of the non-local signal's dependence on magnetic field, temperature and filling factors. This work also demonstrates that graphene in the QH regime is a powerful model system for fundamental studies of antiferromagnetic, and in the case of a large in-plane field, ferromagnetic spintronics.

The co-presence of multiple Dirac bands in few-layer graphene leads to a rich phase diagram in the quantum Hall regime. Using transport measurements, we map the phase diagram of BN-encapsulated ABA-stacked trilayer graphene as a function charge density n, magnetic field B and interlayer displacement field D, and observe transitions among states with different spin, valley, orbital and parity polarizations. Such rich pattern arises from crossings between Landau levels from different subbands, which reflect the evolving symmetries that are tunable in situ. At D=0, we observe fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling factors 2/3 and -11/3. Unlike those in bilayer graphene, these FQH states are destabilized by a small interlayer potential that hybridizes the different Dirac bands., Comment: accepted by PRL; corrected author list

Exciton-polaritons constitute a unique realization of a quantum fluid interacting with its environment. Using Selenide based microcavities, we exploit this feature to warm up a polariton condensate in a controlled way and monitor its spatial coherence. We determine directly the amount of heat picked up by the condensate by measuring the phonon-polariton scattering rate and comparing it with the loss rate. We find that upon increasing the heating rate, the spatial coherence length decreases markedly, while localized phase structures vanish, in good agreement with a stochastic mean field theory. From the thermodynamical point-of-view, this regime is unique as it involves a nonequilibrium quantum fluid with no well-defined temperature, but which is nevertheless able to pick up heat with dramatic effects on the order parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a method which enables to directly compare the impact of elastic strain on the optical properties of distinct quantum dots (QDs). Specifically, the QDs are integrated in a cross-section of a semiconductor core wire which is surrounded by an amorphous straining shell. Detailed numerical simulations show that, thanks to the mechanical isotropy of the shell, the strain field in a core section is homogeneous. Furthermore, we use the core material as an in situ strain gauge, yielding reliable values for the emitter energy tuning slope. This calibration technique is applied to self-assembled InAs QDs submitted to incremental tensile strain along their growth axis. In contrast to recent studies conducted on similar QDs stressed perpendicularly to their growth axis, optical spectroscopy reveals 5-10 times larger tuning slopes, with a moderate dispersion. These results highlight the importance of the stress direction to optimise QD response to applied strain, with implications both in static and dynamic regimes. As such, they are in particular relevant for the development of wavelength-tunable single photon sources or hybrid QD opto-mechanical systems.

Owing to the spin, valley, and orbital symmetries, the lowest Landau level (LL) in bilayer graphene exhibits multicomponent quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Using transport spectroscopy, we investigate the energy gaps of integer and fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene with controlled layer polarization. The state at filling factor {\nu}=1 has two distinct phases: a layer polarized state that has a larger energy gap and is stabilized by high electric field, and a hitherto unobserved interlayer coherent state with a smaller gap that is stabilized by large magnetic field. In contrast, the {\nu}=2/3 quantum Hall state and a feature at {\nu}=1/2 are only resolved at finite electric field and large magnetic field. These results underscore the importance of controlling layer polarization in understanding the competing symmetries in the unusual QH system of BLG.

We present the experimental realization of a quantum fiber-pigtail. The device consists of a semiconductor quantum-dot embedded into a conical photonic wire that is directly connected to the core of a fiber-pigtail. We demonstrate a photon collection efficiency at the output of the fiber of 5.8% and suggest realistic improvements for the implementation of a useful device in the context of quantum information. We finally discuss potential applications in scanning probe microscopy.

Optically active gold-catalyzed ZnTe nanowires have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy, on a ZnTe(111) buffer layer, at low temperature 350\degree under Te rich conditions, and at ultra-low density (from 1 to 5 nanowires per micrometer^{2}. The crystalline structure is zinc blende as identified by transmission electron microscopy. All nanowires are tapered and the majority of them are <111> oriented. Low temperature micro-photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence experiments have been performed on single nanowires. We observe a narrow emission line with a blue-shift of 2 or 3 meV with respect to the exciton energy in bulk ZnTe. This shift is attributed to the strain induced by a 5 nm-thick oxide layer covering the nanowires, and this assumption is supported by a quantitative estimation of the strain in the nanowires.

This chapter reviews the following items: 1. Energy deposition and track structure of fast positrons: ionization slowing down, number of ion-electron pairs, typical sizes, thermalization, electrostatic interaction between e+ and its blob, effect of local heating; 2. Positronium formation in condensed media: the Ore model, quasifree Ps state, intratrack mechanism of Ps formation; 3. Fast intratrack diffusion-controlled reactions: Ps oxidation and ortho-para conversion by radiolytic products, reaction rate constants, interpretation of the PAL spectra in water at different temperatures; 4. Ps bubble models. "Non-point" positronium: wave function, energy contributions, relationship between the pick-off annihilation rate and the bubble radius.
