Large lacustrine mass movements and delta collapses are increasingly being considered as potential tsunamigenic sources and therefore hazardous for the population and infrastructure along lakeshores. Although historical reports document tsunami events in several lakes in Switzerland, and although the propagation of lake tsunamis has been studied by numerical wave modeling, only little is known about on- and offshore lacustrine tsunami deposits. In Lake Sils, Switzerland, a large prehistoric mass-movement deposit originating from the Isola Delta with a minimum estimated volume of 6.5 × 106 m3 and a basinal thickness of > 6 m in the seismic record has been identified by previous studies and radiocarbon dated to around 700 Common Era. Here, we combine (i) comprehensive sedimentological investigation of sediment cores recovered from the on- and offshore settings, (ii) mineralogical fingerprinting of the inflows from key catchments to characterize sediment provenance, and (iii) numerical tsunami modeling, to test the hypothesis of a tsunamigenic delta collapse in Lake Sils. We observe a clastic event deposit consisting of coarse-grained, fining-upward sand overlying an organic-rich peat deposit in the shallow water. This layer thins and fines landward on the coastal plain. Toward the deeper water (20–40 m), the deposit transforms into a thicker and more heterogeneous sediment package with multiple sequences of fining-upward sand and a well-pronounced clay cap at the top. Radiocarbon dating of the peat underlying the event deposit yields a maximum age of 225–419 calibrated Common Era. The tsunami models, which indicate wave heights reaching up to 5 m, simulate areas of inundation that coincide with the location of event deposits. Based on our results, we propose that the historically undocumented Isola Delta collapse generated a basin-wide tsunami that inundated the lakeshore, transporting large amounts of unconsolidated sediment along the lakeshore toward the coastal plain and into the deeper lake basin., Natural Hazards, 107, ISSN:0921-030X, ISSN:1573-0840

The magnitude of temperature changes in the Early Jurassic are not well known. Clumped isotope measurements can potentially be used to provide better constrains, but unfortunately many of the well-studied sedimentary successions that preserve Lower Jurassic fossils experienced burial temperatures above the limits of preservation of Δ47, which for geological timescales is thought to be between 80–120 °C. Samples from these basins are expected to be partially reordered and yield apparent clumped isotope temperatures that are warmer than original values. Here, we explore whether useful paleoclimate information can be recovered from these samples. We test the hypothesis that relative temperature differences are preserved in partially reordered samples when they experience a common burial history. This was done with the use of reordering models and Δ47 measurements of early Jurassic belemnites from the Aubach section of the SW German Basin, a basin that has a relatively well constrained burial history with maximum burial temperatures above 90 °C. We find that even though partial reordering progressively erases the Δ47 difference between samples, the majority (>50%) of the signal is preserved when samples are buried at temperatures as high of 150 °C for up to 200 Ma. Moreover, the models demonstrate that – regardless of burial conditions – partially reordered samples always preserve minimum records of temperature change across climate events. These inferences are supported by the belemnite Δ47 data that show partially reordered compositions and warming/cooling patterns across the Early Jurassic that closely mimic observations from independent proxies. Model observations are used to interpret a 13 ± 4 °C (95% ci) temperature increase that is observed in the belemnite data across the Early Toarcian. The large magnitude of the temperature excursion is explained as a combination of warming and a change in belemnite habitat before and after the Toarcian Ocean Anoxic Event. The Opalinus Clay, an argillaceous to silty claystone formation, is known in Switzerland as being the selected host rock for deep geological disposal of high-, intermediate- and low-level radioactive waste. Since the 1990s, various properties of the Opalinus Clay have been studied within the framework of the Nagra (National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste) deep drilling campaigns and the Mont Terri Project (international research program dedicated to the investigation of claystone). The Opalinus Clay succession was deposited during the Late Toarcian to Early Aalenian in an epicontinental sea covering central Europe.Although the Opalinus Clay is relatively homogeneous at formation-scale compared to other Mesozoic formations in northern Switzerland, significant lithological variations occur at lower scales. Besides m-scale lithofacies variations, high, intra-facies lithological variability occur at dm- to cm-scale. The facies diversity is primary attributed to regional differences in depositional, environmental and diagenetic conditions. In order to harmonize petrographic descriptions in an objective and quantitative way within all fields of research related to the Opalinus Clay, a subfacies classification scheme has been developed (SF1 to SF5, applied mostly on Mont Terri drill cores). The subfacies are distinguished by parameters such as texture (grain size, bedding, fabric and colour) and composition (nature and mineralogy of components). The five subfacies types can be further refined by additional attributes and sedimentary characteristics (biogenic, diagenetic, structural).Subfacies descriptions are crucial to understand the lateral and vertical facies variability at regional scale. Moreover, accurate petrographic descriptions are a crucial prerequisite to many geotechnical studies and the prediction of petrophysical properties.The main goal of the present study is to define a subfacies classification model covering the entire Opalinus Clay succession of the Mont Terri rock laboratory and successions deposited further to the east. Nagra is currently investigating three potential sites for radioactive waste storage within the Opalinus Clay in northern Switzerland. Nine new drill cores are used to apply the subfacies classification scheme. If necessary, the subfacies classification scheme will be adapted considering regional facies heterogeneities. Based on the new subfacies classification, depositional models for the Opalinus Clay will be refined.

Snow avalanche hazard mapping has a long tradition in the European Alps. Hazard maps delineate areas of potential avalanche danger and are only available for selected areas where people and significant infrastructure are endangered. They have been created over generations, at specific sites, mainly based on avalanche activity in the past. For a large part of the area (90 % in the case of the Canton of Grisons) no maps are available. This is a problem when new territory with no or incomplete historical record is to be developed. It is an even larger problem when trying to predict the effects of climate change at the state scale where the historical record may no longer be valid. To close this gap, we develop an automated approach to generate spatial continuous hazard indication mapping based on a digital elevation model for the canton of Grisons (7105 km2) in the Swiss Alps. We calculate eight different scenarios with return periods ranging from frequent to very rare as well as with and without taking the protective effects of the forest into account. This approach combines the automated delineation of potential release areas, the calculation of release depths and the numerical simulation of the avalanche dynamics. This procedure can be applied worldwide, where high spatial resolution digital elevation models, detailed information on the forest and data on the snow climate are available, enabling reproducible hazard indication mapping also in regions where no avalanche hazard maps yet exist. This is invaluable for climate change studies. The simulation results are validated with official hazard maps, by assessments of avalanche experts and by existing avalanche cadastres derived from manual mapping and mapping based on satellite datasets. The results for the canton of Grisons are now operationally applied in the daily hazard assessment work of the authorities. Based on these experiences, the proposed approach can be applied for further mountain regions.

The Opalinus Clay is notable in Switzerland as being the selected host rock for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. Since the early 1990’s, this argillaceous mudstone formation of Jurassic age has been intensively studied within the framework of national and international projects to characterize its geological, hydrological, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and biological properties. While there is no formal stratigraphic subdivision, the Opalinus Clay lithology is classically divided into several, dam- to m-scale sub-units (or facies), depending on location. Recent multi-proxy studies (combining petrographic, petrophysical, geochemical, and mineralogical analyses) have however demonstrated that high, intra-facies, lithological heterogeneity occurs at the dm- to cm-scale. To constrain this small-scale heterogeneity into distinct lithological units (subfacies), the present study aims at defining and presenting a convenient subfacies classification scheme covering the overall Opalinus Clay lithology across northern Switzerland. Petrographic (macro- and microfacies), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction) and textural (image analysis, machine learning and 3D X-ray computed tomography) analyses are performed on diverse drill cores from the Mont Terri rock laboratory (northwestern Switzerland), and results are extended further to the east (Riniken, Weiach, and Benken). Most of the investigated Opalinus Clay can be described by the use of five distinctive subfacies types (SF1 to SF5), which are visually and quantitatively distinguishable by texture (grain size, bedding, fabric, and color) and composition (nature and mineralogy of components). The five subfacies types can be further refined by additional attributes and sedimentary characteristics (biogenic, diagenetic, and structural). Eventually, the widespread and consistent use of standardized Opalinus Clay subfacies types provides the means to harmonize petrographic descriptions within multidisciplinary research projects, enhance reproducibility of in situ experiments, and further evidence the tight relations between lithology and various rock properties., Frontiers in Earth Science, 9, ISSN:2296-6463

Variations in the sulfur isotope composition of dissolved marine sulfate through time reflect changes in the global sulfur cycle and are intimately related to changes in the carbon and oxygen cycles. A large shift in the sulfur isotope composition of sulfate at the Permian/Triassic boundary has been recognized for long time and a number of studies were carried out to understand the causes and significance of this shift. However, data for the Middle and Late Triassic are very sparse and the stratigraphic evolution of the sulfur isotope composition of seawater is poorly constrained due to the small number of samples analyzed and/or due to the limited stratigraphic intervals studied. Moreover, in the last few years the Triassic timescale has significantly changed due to a wealth of new radiometric and stratigraphic data. In this study we show that for the Late Permian and the Triassic it is possible to obtain a precise reconstruction of the evolution of the sulfur cycle, for parts of it at sub-million year resolution, by analyzing exclusively gypsum and anhydrite deposits. We base our reconstruction on new data from the Middle and Late Triassic evaporites of Northern Switzerland and literature data from evaporites from Germany, Austria, Italy and the Middle East. We propose a revised correlation between the well-dated marine Tethyan sections in northern Italy and the evaporites from Northern Switzerland and from the Germanic Basin calibrated to the newest radiometric absolute age scale. This new correlation allows for a precise dating of the evaporites and constructing a composite sulfur isotope evolution of seawater sulfate from the latest Permian (Lopingian Epoch) to the Norian. We show that a rapid positive shift of approximately 24‰ at the Permian-Triassic boundary can be used to constrain seawater sulfate concentrations in the range of 2–6 mM, thus higher than previous estimates but with less rapid changes. Finally, we discuss two possible evolution scenarios for the Middle Triassic negative shift to values of 15‰ that subsequently remain constant during the Late Triassic.

During its late-stage evolution, the European Alpine orogen witnessed a northwest-directed propagation of its deformation front along an evaporitic basal décollement into the foreland. This resulted in the decoupling of the northern Alpine Molasse Basin from its basement and the formation of the Jura fold-and-thrust belt. Here, we present the first absolute age and temperature constraints on deformation along this major décollement by using combined carbonate U-Pb dating by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and clumped isotope thermometry. We analyzed calcite veins associated with a secondary thrust fault branching off from the basal décollement in a deep borehole within the Swiss Molasse Basin providing evidence for three brittle deformation events related to Alpine contraction: Vein formation at ~14 Ma ago, thrust faulting with cataclasis ~13 Ma ago, and another vein formation event ~9 Ma ago. Clumped isotope data reveal vein calcite precipitation at temperatures of ~100 °C from fluids equilibrated with the host rock during all deformation intervals. These temperatures are in good agreement with temperature estimates from microfabrics of anhydrite mylonites in the basal décollement. Our data demonstrate that the propagation of Alpine deformation into its distal foreland occurred significantly earlier than previously inferred, at middle Miocene (Langhian) times at the latest, contributing to the debate about the late-stage geodynamics of the central Alps. The deformation sequence indicated by our results underpins fundamental kinematic models of viscous décollement-based foreland thrust belts. Beyond that, we demonstrate the potential of our methodological approach applied to foreland thrust systems in resolving the late-stage evolution of convergent orogens.

Remnants of a Mesozoic continental margin can be studied today in the nappe pile of the Oman Mountains. Successions of the Arabian carbonate platform and the adjacent deep Hawasina Basin are preserved in the nappe pile and in the foothills of this Mountain range. The Jurassic–Cretaceous sediment successions of the Hawasina Basin (Sumeini and Hamrat Duru Group) are focus of this study. These basinal archives contain information on the response of an eastern Tethyan equatorial ocean system to multiple perturbations of the carbon cycle and of climate during the Cretaceous. Turbiditic continental slope and basinal successions formed near the Calcite Compensation Depth are difficult to date with biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. The available stratigraphic framework for the Hawasina successions was not sufficient for tracing palaeoceanography through the time window of interest in this study. Therefore, existing sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy are complemented by additional biostratigraphic data and with a newly established carbon and strontium isotope chemostratigraphy. The Hawasina Basin was affected by sea-level variations, by changes in oceanography and also by regional tectonics. A first major modification of oceanography occurred at the end of the Jurassic when pelagic Maiolica-type sediments were accumulated in the deep basin and on adjacent submarine highs (Lower Member of Huwar and Sid'r formations). Pelagic to hemipelagic conditions existed until the Valanginian, marked by a major carbon isotope excursion. Pelagic sediments were afterwards replaced by a succession of fine to coarse grained turbidites of Hauterivian to Aptian in age. The transition into the mid-Cretaceous is marked by a sudden shift to fine grained siliceous or chert deposits, at a time when sediments enriched in organic carbon were accumulated in the western Tethys and Atlantic Oceans. The continental slope as well as the Hawasina Basin seemed to have been well-ventilated during Early and mid-Cretaceous time. Siliceous limestones and chert are indicator of well-mixed and nutrient-rich surface water, while absence of black shales suggests young and oxygenated deep water with a possible source on the vast Arabian platform. These peculiar oceanographic conditions were most pronounced during the onset of the extreme greenhouse episodes of the Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a. This article is protected by copyright. The Oman Mountains preserve a Cretaceous continental margin transect with the proximal Arabian carbonate shelf and the adjacent deep Hawasina Basin. Today, the sediments from the Arabian Platform outcrop in the Oman Mountains (Jabal Akdhar and Saih Hatat) and in the Adam Foothills. The western part of the Adam Foothills provides insight into the evolution of a Late Cretaceous intra-platform basin with organic-rich sediments in the central part of this basin. The aims of this study are (a) to establish a biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy of the Natih Formation and (b) to reconstruct depositional conditions of organic-rich sediments in an intra-platform basin during Cenomanian–Turonian times. The hypothesis that local black shale formation is an expression of global perturbations of the global carbon cycle will be tested. Reconstruction of the depositional history of the Arabian Platform and its intra-platform basin within a global palaeoclimatic framework requires an accurate time frame. The Upper Albian to mid-Turonian biostratigraphy of the Natih Formation has resulted in controversial age models that will be integrated into a solid chemostratigraphic framework with additional biostratigraphic data. A major positive δ13C excursion (+4·6‰) has been identified as of Middle Cenomanian age, which is confirmed by an ammonite datum. A second positive δ13C excursion (+4·5‰) following a major negative excursion (−1·0‰) confirms the existence of the Cenomanian/Turonian Boundary Event. The accurate chemostratigraphy and biostratigraphy confirms that major source rocks in the Mishrif-Natih Basin precede OAE2. Low δ13C values measured in the sediments of the Natih B member are considered a consequence of diagenetic alteration. Elevated organic carbon contents and argillaceous sediments alternating with limestones resulted in diagenetic conditions favouring formation of authigenic calcite depleted in C-13.

Mesozoic Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs) are expressions of major physical oceanographic changes at times of perturbation of the global carbon cycle. A northern Tethyan record of OAE2 is preserved in expanded Cenomanian–Turonian pelagic limestone sections (Seewen Formation) in Eastern Switzerland. The new carbonate carbon-isotope stratigraphy extracted from these limestones demonstrates that the OAE2 is condensed in all the studied successions and only the onset of the δ13C excursion (5.0‰) is present. The condensed interval is characterized by dissolution features, which are filled by a glauconite quartz sandstone. This bed is overlain by a well-sorted sandstone with intercalated limestone pebbles (Gotzis Member), which can be compared with palimpsest sands forming today along current-swept shelves. The wide distribution of this thin sandstone layer within OAE2 indicates that an intense, erosive, east-west trending shelf current was active during the highest sea level and most extreme carbon-cycle perturbation of the OAE2.
