Freight transport in the Adriatic area suffers from persistent organizational, operational and service barriers and the negative impacts of road transport. Multimodal interventions could reduce CO2 emissions and other impacts, including air and noise pollution, and road congestion. Integrated sustainable solutions can act to improve traffic flow and logistics, and management of goods and tourism supply. Multimodal optimization of road-sea combined transport can be augmented to include air modal share on existing and new routes for sensitive freight with emphasis on yearlong operations. This paper adresses the need to improve and extend the availability of passenger routes to allow the potential for mixed cargo in the Adriatic with a case study in Italy-Greece transport. Such plans are hampered by the overlong (up to 15 hours) duration of air trips, which could reduce product quality within a few hours after harvest. Fast shipment and delivery of affordable fresh products, such as mozzarella and strawberries is essential, and would benefit from nonused passenger cargo. Fresh products could use available hold space, guaranteeing lower-than-conventional shipping time at affordable price. The new service would establish new shipping options for fresh products, empowering Italian and Greek local producers. The service will be enabled through an integrated ICT platform that was developed to offer user access (e.g. to information on departure time, load space availability, goods allowed for transportation), and facilitate creation of new market opportunities for fresh producers. The platform supports the identification of demand and supply (by creating accounts as seller or buyer) and the booking of transport. The platform end user (seller or buyer) can find the proper passenger carrier for shipping fresh products to the airport of origin. Platform design includes Operational (OR) and NonOperational (NOR) requirements. This research seeks to evaluate the potential for transferability of new freeway incident detection algorithms that can be used in automatic incident detection. An incident detection logic is evaluated that distinguishes incidents from recurrent congestion and other traffic disturbances using exponential smoothing. The algorithm is tested with loop detector data from test sites on I-35W in Minnesota and I-880 in California with promising results. Test results indicate that, at the Minnesota test site, algorithm performance improves over earlier findings with a limited data set, without requiring recalibration. At a detection rate of approximately 60 percent, the algorithm produces one false alarm per hour in the total (southbound and northbound) 40-km (25-mi) test section, which includes 54 detector stations. When the algorithm is recalibrated and tested at the California site, its performance further improves. The performance of the algorithm is compared with that of major algorithms of comparative type and is found to be superior at all times. This superiority is not affected by the transport of the algorithm across sites; it is still observed in analyzing northbound and southbound, peak and off-peak, and accident versus nonaccident detection. The findings indicate a strong transferability potential of the new algorithm.

Perception of the environment in a mobile robot is a difficult task. Other moving objects and various changes in the environment and motion of the robot must be handled together. Control of mobile movements in a known or especially in an unknown environment involves knowledge of exact details of other objects in surrounding areas. These details may include information such as instant position, speed and direction of movement, dimensions and collision possibility. The observation of environment is done by using various sensors, which can give information about distances and directions of other objects, which can be either stationary or moving. Depending on the accuracy demands of the application the number and complexity of sensors may vary a lot. Sensor signals are preprocessed to minimize the amount of data, that is transferred ahead to main processing units. To make this processing simple and easy data from different sensors must be presented similarly. For each transducer type there is an own filter to produce a common data representation. This representation is done in such a way that adding and removing of sensors is possible without modifying other parts of the system. The modeling of the mobile environment is based on the combined information from various sources. These sources include a priori data, e.g., maps of the area where mobiles are used, measured distances, and data of other objects. This environment model could be described as a dynamic map of the mobile environment.
