In the spring of 2013, the University Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago was in the unique position of having access to two discovery systems, Summon and WorldCat Local, at the same time. When tasked with choosing between the two systems, librarians undertook a usability study of Summon and WorldCat Local. The goal of this study was two-fold: to test the ease-of-use of each discovery system with an eye toward identifying one tool to retain for the longer term, and to learn about the search behaviors of different types of user groups. Eighteen subjects, consisting of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty, participated in the study. Participants performed usability tasks using each tool and answered pre-task and post-task questions. While there was no clear preference among study participants for either discovery layer, individual groups did express preferences. Endosialin (CD248, TEM-1) is expressed in pericytes, tumor vasculature, tumor fibroblasts, and some tumor cells, including sarcomas, with limited normal tissue expression, and appears to play a key role in tumor-stromal interactions, including angiogenesis. Monoclonal antibodies targeting endosialin have entered clinical trials, including soft tissue sarcomas. We evaluated a cohort of 94 soft tissue sarcoma samples to assess the correlation between gene expression and protein expression by immunohistochemistry for endosialin and PDGFR-β, a reported interacting protein, across available diagnoses. Correlations between the expression of endosialin and 13 other genes of interest were also examined. Within cohorts of soft tissue diagnoses assembled by tissue type (liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, undifferentiated sarcoma, and other), endosialin expression was significantly correlated with a better outcome. Endosialin expression was highest in liposarcomas and lowest in leiomyosarcomas. A robust correlation between protein and gene expression data for both endosialin and PDGFR-βwas observed. Endosialin expression positively correlated with PDGFR-βand heparin sulphate proteoglycan 2 and negatively correlated with carbonic anhydrase IX. Endosialin likely interacts with a network of extracellular and hypoxia activated proteins in sarcomas and other tumor types. Since expression does vary across histologic groups, endosialin may represent a selective target in soft tissue sarcomas.

A 48-year-old man presented to the emergency department complaining of fever, chills, myalgias, and diffuse abdominal discomfort of four days' duration. A nonpruritic rash had developed on his left palm, arms, legs, and buttocks on the fourth day. He had not had respiratory symptoms, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

The oncocytic Schneiderian papilloma (OSP) is a rare neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The majority of the approximately twenty patients reported in the literature with this papilloma have been over the age of fifty at the time of diagnosis. The 33-year-old woman reported here is the youngest patient with this lesion to date. The OSP should be considered in the work-up of all unilateral nasal polypoid lesions. This lesion's propensity for recurrence and its documented association with synchronous malignant disease warrant surgical excision by en bloc resection of the lateral nasal wall, with corresponding careful microscopic evaluation of all excised tissue.
