Understanding how animals respond to large-scale environmental changes is difficult to achieve because monitoring data are rarely available for more than the past few decades, if at all. Here, we demonstrate how a variety of palaeoecological proxies (e.g. isotopes, geochemistry and DNA) from an Andean Condor ( Vultur gryphus ) guano deposit from Argentina can be used to explore breeding site fidelity and the impacts of environmental changes on avian behaviour. We found that condors used the nesting site since at least approximately 2200 years ago, with an approximately 1000-year nesting frequency slowdown from ca 1650 to 650 years before the present (yr BP). We provide evidence that the nesting slowdown coincided with a period of increased volcanic activity in the nearby Southern Volcanic Zone, which resulted in decreased availability of carrion and deterred scavenging birds. After returning to the nest site ca 650 yr BP, condor diet shifted from the carrion of native species and beached marine animals to the carrion of livestock (e.g. sheep and cattle) and exotic herbivores (e.g. red deer and European hare) introduced by European settlers. Currently, Andean Condors have elevated lead concentrations in their guano compared to the past, which is associated with human persecution linked to the shift in diet.

Species differing in life-history attributes vary in their responses to features within a shared landscape. We evaluated genetic structure of sympatric gartersnake species in southwestern Ontario (Canada) and southeastern Michigan (USA), where habitat fragmentation is high due to agriculture and urbanization. We surveyed genetic structure of a habitat specialist, Butler’s Gartersnake (Thamnophis butleri (Cope, 1889)), and a habitat generalist, Eastern Gartersnake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis (Linnaeus, 1758)), using DNA microsatellites. Bayesian clustering, discriminant analysis of principal components, and pairwise population comparisons revealed genetic differentiation among three major regional clusters of Butler’s Gartersnake with evidence of further division within one. Genetic clustering of Butler’s Gartersnake suggest that inhospitable habitat limits dispersal. Eastern Gartersnakes showed less structure, with assignment tests implying a single genetic cluster. Ticks in the familyIxodidaeare important vectors of zoonoses including Lyme disease (LD), which is caused by spirochete bacteria from theBorreliella(Borrelia)burgdorferisensu lato (Bbsl) complex. The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) continues to expand across Canada, creating hotspots of elevated LD risk at the leading edge of its expansion range. Current efforts to understand the risk of pathogen transmission associated withI. scapularisin Canada focus primarily on targeted screens, while variation in the tick microbiome remains poorly understood. Using multi-omics consisting of 16S metabarcoding and ribosome-depleted, whole-shotgun RNA transcriptome sequencing, we examined the microbial communities associated with adultI. scapularis(N = 32), sampled from four tissue types (whole tick, salivary glands, midgut, and viscera) and three geographical locations within a LD hotspot near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The communities consisted of both endosymbiotic and known or potentially pathogenic microbes, including RNA viruses, bacteria, and aBabesiasp. intracellular parasite. We show that β-diversity is significantly higher between individual tick salivary gland and midgut bacterial communities, compared to whole ticks; while linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) determined that the three potentially pathogenic bacteria detected by V4 16S rDNA sequencing also differed among dissected tissues only, including aBorreliafrom theBbslcomplex,Borrelia miyamotoi, andAnaplasma phagocytophilum. Importantly, we find co-infection ofI. scapularisby multiple microbes, in contrast to diagnostic protocols for LD, which typically focus on infection from a single pathogen of interest (B. burgdorferisensu stricto).IMPORTANCEA vector of human health concern, blacklegged ticks,Ixodes scapularis, transmit pathogens that cause tick-borne diseases (TBDs), including Lyme disease (LD). Several hotspots of elevated LD risk have emerged across Canada asI. scapularisexpands its range. Focusing on a hotspot in southeastern Ontario, we used high-throughput sequencing on whole ticks and dissected salivary glands and midguts. Compared to whole ticks, analysis of salivary glands and midguts revealed greater β-diversity among microbiomes that are less dominated byRickettsiaendosymbiont bacteria and enriched for pathogenic bacteria including aBbsl-associatedBorrelia,Borrelia miyamotoi, andAnaplasma phagocytophilum. We also find evidence of co-infection ofI. scapularisin this region by multiple microbes. Overall, our study highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with the surveillance of the microbiome ofI. scapularisfor pathogen detection using metabarcoding and metatranscriptome approaches.

Background and Aims Many plant taxa in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and the Hengduan Mountains (HM) radiated rapidly during the Quaternary but with frequent secondary contact between diverging populations. Incomplete lineage sorting and introgressive hybridization might be involved during the rapid radiation, but their effects on phylogeography have not been fully determined. Methods We investigated the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA)/internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence variations of 611 samples of Rhodiola bupleuroides, R. discolor, R. fastigiata and R. chrysanthemifolia from the QTP and HM to compare the phylogeographic patterns between the four species with different evolutionary histories, geographic ranges and reproductive modes. Key Results The divergence times of these species were consistent with the last peak of in situ speciation in the HM. While closely related species exhibited different phylogeographic patterns, they shared several ribotypes and haplotypes in sympatric populations, suggesting introgressive hybridization. A significant phylogenetic discordance between ribotypes and haplotypes was detected in three species, implying incomplete lineage sorting. Rhodiola discolor houses an extraordinary richness of cpDNA haplotypes, and this finding may be attributed to adaptive radiation. Conclusion In addition to geographic isolation and climate oscillations during the Quaternary, both introgressive hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting play important roles in species that experienced rapid diversification in the QTP and HM.

Integrated studies of the geographical, ecological, and historical factors that shape intraspecific phenotypic and genetic variation can help us to decipher the processes leading to geographic patterns of population divergence and speciation. We quantify and compare morphological and genetic variation in the Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus Linnaeus, 1766), a broadly distributed passerine in North America with both migratory and non-migratory populations that occupy a diversity of habitats and topographies. The geographic distributions and patterns of differentiation among subspecies suggest that migration has strongly impacted population divergence, including the habit of migrating itself, but also dispersal. Patterns of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic differentiation can be attributed to female-biased dispersal and to increased dispersal rates and distances in migratory populations. Weak phenotypic differentiation among migratory versus migratory and non-migratory populations suggest that migration may more strongly affect morphology than adaptation to local habitats. Our results generally support previous subspecific designations with two notable exceptions. We found little genetic differentiation between two subspecies (Lanius ludovicianus gambeli Ridgway, 1887 and Lanius ludovicianus mexicanus C.L. Brehm, 1854), but identify a new, distinct subspecies, which we refer to as Lanius ludovicianus centralis ssp. nov.

Contemporary intraspecific patterns of genetic variation reflect the historical effects of population subdivision–expansion and forces like drift, gene flow, and selection. We investigated the population structure of anadromous Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) in the Lower Northwest Passage (LNWP), Nunavut, using 3074 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms markers (SNPs). Overall, the genetic differentiation was weak to moderate among 18 sampling locales (global FST= 0.037). Populations were structured hierarchically, with a deeper genetic division between King William Island (global FST= 0.018) and mainland populations ∼200 km away to the south (global FST= 0.018), and some evidence of genetic subgroups within the former. These findings suggest a role for char migratory behaviour in shaping contemporary genetic population structure, with demographic modelling favouring an isolation with migration over a strict isolation scenario. Twenty-two SNPs were identified as potentially under divergent selection with putative functions including neurotransmission and bone development and growth during late embryogenesis. Our study is the first survey of Arctic char in the LNWP using genomics and provides baseline data for the development of a sustainable fishery within this region.

Practical tools to quantify range-wide dietary choices of the polar bear have not been well developed, thus impeding the monitoring of this species in a changing climate. Here we describe our steps toward non-invasive polar bear diet determination with the optimization of 454 pyrosequencing of a 136 base pair (bp) mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) fragment amplified from the extracts of captive and wild polar bear faeces. We first determine the efficacy, reliability, and accuracy of our method using five faecal samples from a captive polar bear fed a known diet at the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada; 19 samples from three polar bears at the Metro Toronto Zoo, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and seven samples from seven wild (unfed) polar bears from a holding facility in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. We report 91% overall success in amplifying a 136 bp cytb amplicon from the faeces of polar bears. Our DNA analyses accurately recovered the vertebrate diet profiles of captive bears fed known diets. We then characterized multiyear vertebrate prey diet choices from free-ranging polar bears from the sea ice of the M’Clintock Channel polar bear management unit, Nunavut, Canada (n = 117 from an unknown number of bears). These data point to a diet unsurprisingly dominated by ringed seal (Pusa hispida) while including evidence of bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), harbour seal (Phoca vitulina), muskox (Ovibos moschatus ssp.), Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), wolf (Canis lupus), Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), and Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus). We found low levels of contamination (< 3% of sequences when present) and suggest specific process improvements to reduce contamination in range-wide studies. Together, these findings indicate that next-generation sequencing-based diet assessments show great promise in monitoring free-ranging polar bears in this time of climate change.

Using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding, we compared fish diversity in two distinct water bodies within the Yangtze River Basin with known populations of the critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis; YFP): the Tian-e-Zhou Reserve and Poyang Lake. We aimed to create a fish surveying tool for use in the Yangtze River Basin, while also gaining a better understanding of the prey distribution and diversity within two of the remaining strongholds of YFP. 16S rRNA universal primers were developed to amplify fish eDNA. After high-throughput sequencing and stringent data filtering, we identified a total of 75 fish species (6 orders, 9 families, 57 genera) across seasons and regions. Nine of the 75 fish species were among the 28 known YFP prey species, three of which were detected in all water samples. Our eDNA metabarcoding identified many species that had been previously captured using traditional netting practices, but also numerous species not previously collected in these water bodies. Fish diversity was higher in Poyang Lake than in Tian-e-Zhou Reserve, as well as higher in the spring than in summer. These methods provide a broadly applicable tool to quantify fish diversity and distributions throughout the Yangtze River Basin, and to inform conservation strategies of YFP.

Knowledge coevolution is the process through which information is generated by joining knowledge systems in an inclusive and iterative way to facilitate self-determination of communities and promote cultural resilience. A central and practical component of this framework is the fostering of progress towards improved co-management and community led research. Here, we illustrate a knowledge coevolution framework in the context of a major five-year genomics and food security fishery research project in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut. We highlight the process, changes in research objectives, logistical requirements, mutual benefits, and challenges associated with northern collaborative research, and what lessons we have learned from the process. Knowledge coevolution could be linked to more inclusive and effective fishery co-management in Nunavut and possibly elsewhere. Further, the research process appears to have reinforced Indigenous knowledge and Western science without merging these distinct knowledge systems. Here, we strive to provide readers with concrete examples of knowledge coevolution and encourage research groups to incorporate and improve these practices in future projects and in adaptive fishery co-management. We further call on funding agencies to place more value, and thus budgetary priority, on activities related to ongoing consultation, engagement, dissemination, and implementation of project outcomes. Genetic monitoring using noninvasive samples provides a complement or alternative to traditional population monitoring methods. However, next-generation sequencing approaches to monitoring typically require high quality DNA and the use of noninvasive samples (e.g., scat) is often challenged by poor DNA quality and contamination by nontarget species. One promising solution is a highly multiplexed sequencing approach called genotyping-in-thousands by sequencing (GT-seq), which can enable cost-efficient genomics-based monitoring for populations based on noninvasively collected samples. Here, we develop and validate a GT-seq panel of 324 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) optimized for genotyping of polar bears based on DNA from noninvasively collected faecal samples. We demonstrate (1) successful GT-seq genotyping of DNA from a range of sample sources, including successful genotyping (50% loci) of 62.9% of noninvasively collected faecal samples determined to contain polar bear DNA; and (2) that we can reliably differentiate individuals, ascertain sex, assess relatedness, and resolve population structure of Canadian polar bear subpopulations based on a GT-seq panel of 324 SNPs. Our GT-seq data reveal spatial-genetic patterns similar to previous polar bear studies but at lesser cost per sample and through use of noninvasively collected samples, indicating the potential of this approach for population monitoring. This GT-seq panel provides the foundation for a noninvasive toolkit for polar bear monitoring and can contribute to community-based programmes - a framework which may serve as a model for wildlife conservation and management for species worldwide.

The identification of food fish bearing anthropogenic contaminants is one of many priorities for Indigenous peoples living in the Arctic. Mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), and persistent organic pollutants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are of concern, and these are reported, in some cases for the first time, for fish sampled in and around King William Island, located in Nunavut, Canada. More than 500 salmonids, comprising Arctic char, lake trout, lake whitefish, and ciscoes, were assayed for contaminants. The studied species are anadromous, migrating to the ocean to feed in the summers and returning to freshwater before sea ice formation in the autumn. Assessments of muscle Hg levels in salmonids from fishing sites on King William Island showed generally higher levels than from mainland sites, with mean concentrations generally below guidelines, except for lake trout. In contrast, mainland fish showed higher means for As, including non-toxic arsenobetaine, than island fish. Lake trout were highest in As and PCB levels, with salmonid PCB congener analysis showing signatures consistent with the legacy of cold-war distant early warning stations. After DNA-profiling, only 4&ndash, 32 Arctic char single nucleotide polymorphisms were needed for successful population assignment. These results support our objective to demonstrate that genomic tools could facilitate efficient and cost-effective cluster assignment for contaminant analysis during ocean residency. We further suggest that routine pollutant testing during the current period of dramatic climate change would be helpful to safeguard the wellbeing of Inuit who depend on these fish as a staple input to their diet. Moreover, this strategy should be applicable elsewhere.

The golden-crowned (Zonotrichia atricapilla) and white-crowned (Z. leucophrys) sparrows have been presented as a compelling case for rapid speciation. They display divergence in song and plumage with overlap in their breeding ranges implying reproductive isolation, but have almost identical mitochondrial genomes. Previous research proposed hybridization and subsequent mitochondrial introgression as an alternate explanation, but lacked robust nuclear gene trees to distinguish between introgression and incomplete lineage sorting. We test for signatures of these processes betweenZ. atricapillaandZ. leucophrys, and investigate the relationships amongZ. leucophryssubspecies, using mitochondrial sequencing and a reduced representation nuclear genomic dataset. Contrary to the paraphyly evident in mitochondrial gene trees, we confirmed the reciprocal monophyly ofZ. atricapillaandZ. leucophrysusing large panels of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs). The pattern of cytonuclear discordance is consistent with limited, historical hybridization and mitochondrial introgression, rather than a recent origin and incomplete lineage sorting between recent sister species. We found evidence of nuclear phylogeographic structure withinZ. leucophryswith two distinct clades. Altogether, our results support the true species status ofZ. atricapillaandZ. leucophrys, and indicate deeper divergences between the two species than inferred using mitochondrial markers. Our results demonstrate the limitations of relying solely on mitochondrial DNA for taxonomy, and raise questions about the possibility of selection on the mitochondrial genome during temperature oscillations (e.g. during the Pleistocene). Historical mitochondrial introgression facilitated by past environmental changes could cause erroneous dating of lineage splitting in other taxa when based on mitochondrial DNA alone.

DNA extracted from fecal samples contains DNA from the focal species, food, bacteria and pathogens. Most DNA quantification methods measure total DNA and cannot differentiate among sources. Despite the desirability of noninvasive fecal sampling for studying wildlife populations, low amounts of focal species DNA make it difficult to use for next-generation sequencing (NGS), where accurate DNA quantification is critical for normalization. Two factors are required prior to using fecal samples in NGS libraries: (1) an accurate quantification method for the amount of target DNA and (2) a determination of the relative amount of target DNA needed for successful single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping assays. Here, we address these needs by developing primers to amplify a 101 bp region of the nuclear F2 gene and a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay that allows the accurate quantification of the amount of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) DNA in fecal extracts. We test the assay on pure polar bear DNA extracted from muscle tissue and find a high correlation between fluorometric and qPCR quantifications. The qPCR assay was also successfully used to quantify the amount of DNA derived from polar bears in fecal extractions. Orthologs of the F2 gene have been identified across vertebrates; thus, similar qPCR assays could be developed for other species to enable noninvasive studies.

Aim We combine genetic and stable isotope data to quantify migration patterns in Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus), a species of conservation concern in North America, to assess how connectivity differs and impacts population evolution, ecology, and conservation. Location We sampled shrikes across the majority of their nonbreeding range, from the Atlantic Coast to the western United States east of the Rocky Mountains and throughout Mexico. Methods Our study used a Bayesian framework using δ2Hf from a breeding season origin feather and nuclear genetic microsatellite markers to distinguish between co-occurring migratory and nonmigratory individuals on the wintering grounds and, for migrants, to assign individuals to a breeding ground origin and genetic group. Results Migratory shrikes were present throughout the nonbreeding range but the proportion differed among sample areas. Four main wintering areas were identified. Connectivity ranged from weakly negative in birds wintering on the Atlantic Coast to strongly positive between wintering grounds in the southwestern United States and Mexico and northwestern breeding populations. Connectivity was weakest in L. l. migrans, and strongest in L. l. mexicanus and L. l. excubitorides. Although believed to be nonmigratory, long-distance movements of individuals were observed in L. ludovicianus and L. l. mexicanus. Our data support a pattern of chain migration, again most notable in the western half of the species nonbreeding range, and differential migration based on age. Main conclusions Our study provides of one such of the first quantitative measures of migratory connectivity and is among the first studies of a short-distance migratory passerine in North America. The higher migratory connectivity among western, versus eastern populations, and less severe population declines attributable to habitat loss or reproductive success, may result in more localized and/or less severe limiting factors for western populations and more severe on the Atlantic coast and Mississippi Alluvial Valley wintering grounds.

Climate change profoundly influences species distributions. These effects are evident in poleward latitudinal range shifts for many taxa, and upward altitudinal range shifts for alpine species, that resulted from increased annual global temperatures since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ca. 22,000 BP). For the latter, the ultimate consequence of upward shifts may be extinction as species in the highest alpine ecosystems can migrate no further, a phenomenon often characterized as “nowhere to go”. To predict responses to climate change of the alpine plants on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), we used ecological niche modelling (ENM) to estimate the range shifts of 14 Rhodiola species, beginning with the Last Interglacial (ca. 120,000–140,000 BP) through to 2050. Distributions of Rhodiola species appear to be shaped by temperature-related variables. The southeastern QTP, and especially the Hengduan Mountains, were the origin and center of distribution for Rhodiola, and also served as refugia during the LGM. Under future climate scenario in 2050, Rhodiola species might have to migrate upward and northward, but many species would expand their ranges contra the prediction of the “nowhere to go” hypothesis, caused by the appearance of additional potential habitat concomitant with the reduction of permafrost with climate warming.

We investigated moult strategies in Loggerhead Shrikes by examining first prebasic or preformative moult patterns and by assessing the general location where individual feathers were grown using stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) analysis. We tested the relative importance of factors known to impact moult timing and pattern, including age, sex, body size, food availability and migration. Migratory Shrikes showed evidence of suspended moult, in which feathers are moulted on both the breeding and the non-breeding grounds with a suspension of moult during migration. Extent of moult was best explained by sex, longitude, migratory behaviour and breeding-ground latitude. Male Hatch Year (HY) Shrikes replaced more feathers on the breeding grounds prior to migration than did HY females and moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did females. Non-migratory HY Shrikes underwent a more extensive preformative moult than migratory HY Shrikes. Individuals in more southerly migratory populations moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did those breeding further north. Our data also indicate that individuals in the northeastern populations moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did those in the north and southwest. Our study underlines the complex structure and variation in moult possible within species, revealing surprising levels of differentiation between sexes and age cohorts, linked to environmental factors on the breeding grounds. Our study highlights the utility of an intrinsic marker, specifically δ2H analysis, to test hypotheses regarding the evolutionary and ecological forces driving moult. Although the methodology has not commonly been applied to this area of research, our results indicate that it can provide unprecedented insight into inter- and intra-specific adaptive response to constraints, whereby individuals maximize fitness.

The Yungas Redbelly Toad, Melanophryniscus rubriventris, is patchily distributed in Argentina, confined to the upland portion (1000 to 2000 meters above sea level) of the montane forests of northern and central regions of Salta, and in central-eastern and south-eastern Jujuy. This species is known for its striking aposomatic color variation across its geographic distribution, and was once treated as a complex of three subspecies based on distinctive color patterns. Here we assess the genealogical relationships within M. rubriventris and quantify divergence in color and pattern among individuals sampled from Northwestern Argentina. We compare a multi-gene genealogy of M. rubriventris to patterns of dorsal and ventral coloration to test whether evolutionaryaffinities predict variation in warning color. Our results reveal two well-supported clades: one confined to the extreme northern portion of our sampling area, and the other extending over most of the Argentine portion of the species? range, within which there are two subclades. However, these well-supported evolutionary relationships do not mirror the marked variation in warning coloration. This discordance between DNA genealogy and warning color variation may reflect selection brought about by differences in local predation pressures, potentially coupled with effects of sexual selection and thermoregulation. Dispersal can impact population dynamics and geographic variation, and thus, genetic approaches that can establish which landscape factors influence population connectivity have ecological and evolutionary importance. Mixed models that account for the error structure of pairwise datasets are increasingly used to compare models relating genetic differentiation to pairwise measures of landscape resistance. A model selection framework based on information criteria metrics or explained variance may help disentangle the ecological and landscape factors influencing genetic structure, yet there are currently no consensus for the best protocols. Here, we develop landscape‐directed simulations and test a series of replicates that emulate independent empirical datasets of two species with different life history characteristics (greater sage‐grouse; eastern foxsnake). We determined that in our simulated scenarios, AIC and BIC were the best model selection indices and that marginal R 2 values were biased toward more complex models. The model coefficients for landscape variables generally reflected the underlying dispersal model with confidence intervals that did not overlap with zero across the entire model set. When we controlled for geographic distance, variables not in the underlying dispersal models (i.e., nontrue) typically overlapped zero. Our study helps establish methods for using linear mixed models to identify the features underlying patterns of dispersal across a variety of landscapes.

The tropical and subtropical Andes have among the highest levels of biodiversity in the world. Understanding the forces that underlie speciation and diversification in the Andes is a major focus of research. Here we tested two hypotheses of species origins in the Andes: 1. Vicariance mediated by orogenesis or shifting habitat distribution. 2. Parapatric diversification along elevational environmental gradients. We also sought insights on the factors that impacted the phylogeography of co-distributed taxa, and the influences of divergent species ecology on population genetic structure. We used phylogeographic and coalescent analyses of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence data to compare genetic diversity and evolutionary history of two frog species:Pleurodema borellii(Family: Leiuperidae, 130 individuals; 20 sites), andHypsiboas riojanus(Family: Hyllidae, 258 individuals; 23 sites) across their shared range in northwestern Argentina. The two showed concordant phylogeographic structuring, and our analyses support the vicariance model over the elevational gradient model. However,Pleurodema borelliiexhibited markedly deeper temporal divergence (≥4 Ma) thanH. riojanus(1-2 Ma). The three main mtDNA lineages ofP. borelliiwere nearly allopatric and diverged between 4-10 Ma. At similar spatial scales, differentiation was less in the putatively more habitat-specializedH. riojanusthan in the more generalistP. borellii. Similar allopatric distributions of major lineages for both species implies common causes of historical range fragmentation and vicariance. However, different divergence times among clades presumably reflect different demographic histories, permeability of different historical barriers at different times, and/or difference in life history attributes and sensitivities to historical environmental change. Our research enriches our understanding of the phylogeography of the Andes in northwestern Argentina.

Trade-offs shaping behavioral variation are often influenced by the environment. We investigated the role that the environment plays in mediating trade-offs using a widespread frog with a conspicuous mating display, Pseudacris crucifer. We first demonstrated, using playback and desiccation experiments, that calling site selection involves a trade-off between sound transmission and desiccation. We then determined the influence of local environmental conditions on the intensity of the trade-off by examining range-wide behavioral and environmental data. We showed that the benefit of improved call transmission is positively influenced by vegetation density and ground cover. Behavioral data are consistent with this relationship: sites with a greater transmission benefit have increased prevalence of arboreally calling males. We also found that the prevalence of arboreal calling behavior increases with relative humidity and air temperature, suggesting an influence of these environmental variables on the desiccation cost of arboreal calling. This study provides a clear example of the role of the environment in mediating trade-off intensities and shaping critical behavioral traits.Local environment mediates the intensity of a trade-off associated with arboreal calling behavior in a treefrog. Combining observational and experimental approaches, we show that arboreal calling behavior increases the transmission of a mating call while potentially subjecting individuals to a rate of desiccation six times greater than terrestrial calling. Local environmental conditions influence both the benefit and the cost of this trade-off, subjecting different populations to varying trade-off intensities and shaping arboreal calling behavior.

It is a long‐standing challenge to understand how changes in food resources impact consumer life history traits and, in turn, impact how organisms interact with their environment. To characterize food quality effects on life history, most studies follow organisms throughout their life cycle and quantify major life events, such as age at maturity or fecundity. From these studies, we know that food quality generally impacts body size, juvenile development, and life span. Importantly, throughout juvenile development, many organisms develop through several stages of growth that can have different interactions with their environment. For example, some parasitoids typically attack larger instars, whereas larval insect predators typically attack smaller instars. Interestingly, most studies lump all juvenile stages together, which ignores these ecological changes over juvenile development.We combine a cross‐sectional experimental approach with a stage‐structured population model to estimate instar‐specific vital rates in the bean weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus across a food quality gradient. We characterize food quality effects on the bean weevil's life history traits throughout its juvenile ontogeny to test how food quality impacts instar‐specific vital rates.Vital rates differed across food quality treatments within each instar; however, their effect differed with instar. Weevils consuming low‐quality food spent 38%, 37%, and 18% more time, and were 34%, 53%, and 63% smaller than weevils consuming high‐quality food in the second, third, and fourth instars, respectively. Overall, our results show that consuming poor food quality means slower growth, but that food quality effects on vital rates, growth and development are not equal across instars. Differences in life history traits over juvenile ontogeny in response to food quality may impact how organisms interact with their environment, including how susceptible they are to predation, parasitism, and their competitive ability., A long‐standing challenge is to understand how changes in host food quality impacts host quality, and how they scale up to influence parasitism rates and parasitoid fitness. Here, we evaluate whether the effects of food quality on host life history are equal throughout ontogeny to ascertain whether trait variation across instars should be considered when characterizing food quality effects. By combining a cross‐sectional experimental approach with a stage‐structured population model to estimate instar‐specific vital rates, we find strong evidence for a trade‐off between host size and development time within an instar suggesting that juvenile instar‐structure is important for host susceptibility to parasitism and parasitoid fitness.

While the use of aquatic protected areas that exclude angling might be considered an evolutionarily enlightened management approach to dealing with fisheries-induced evolution (FIE), there is little empirical data on the effectiveness of this approach at maintaining the diversity of phenotypic traits within protected areas. In species with paternal care, including largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), active nest-guarding and aggression towards potential brood predators by males may render these individuals particularly vulnerable to capture by angling because of increased propensity to attack fishing lures/bait near their nests. Relative levels of aggression by these males during the parental care period correlates with their vulnerability to angling year round. Selective removal of more aggressive individuals by anglers should drive population-average phenotypes towards lower levels of aggression. To assess the effectiveness of protected areas at mitigating FIE, the parental care behaviours of wild, free-swimming male bass were compared during the early nesting period for bass within and outside protected areas in a lake in eastern Ontario. Nesting males within long-standing aquatic protected areas closed to fishing for >70 years were more aggressive towards bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), a potential nest predator, and patrolled larger areas around their nests compared with bass outside of sanctuaries. Males within protected areas were also more likely to strike at artificial fishing lures and were more prone to capture during angling events. Collectively, the findings suggest that the establishment of protected areas may promote phenotypic diversity such as more attentive and vigorous parental care, relative to areas open to angling. The extent to which this phenomenon occurs in other species and systems is likely to depend on the reproductive strategies of fish and their spatial ecology compared with protected area boundaries, and habitat quality within protected areas.

Reproductive barriers and divergence in species' mate recognition systems underlie major models of speciation. However, hybridization between divergent species is common, and classic mechanisms to explain permeable reproductive barriers rarely consider how an individual may attain reproductive success. Alternative mating tactics (AMTs) exist in various forms across animal taxa. Such tactics may allow poorer quality individuals to gain mating opportunities and facilitate introgression either through asymmetrical positive selection or by circumventing female choice altogether in areas of secondary contact. One such tactic is satellite behaviour in frogs, where silent males perch near advertisers in an attempt to intercept females. To test whether such satellite male tactics are context-dependent and favoured by hybrids, we genotyped and quantified the morphology of 80 male spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer) individuals involved in caller-satellite associations from a secondary contact zone between two intraspecific mitochondrial lineages. Irrespective of population, satellite behaviour was best predicted by size but not body condition. Within the contact zone, pure individuals showed a significantly greater probability of being active callers, whereas hybrids of one lineage were more likely to adopt the satellite tactic. We suggest that satellite behaviour in P. crucifer promotes introgression, breaks down reproductive isolating barriers and contributes to asymmetrical introgression in this secondary contact zone. AMTs may thus be an underexplored but important alternative to oft-discussed causes of genetic discordance found in hybrid zones.
