Quantifying the amount of gas hydrate in a reservoir provides valuable insight on gas hydrates’ potential as a resource and their contribution to the global carbon cycle. We develop a new method to estimate hydrate saturation from density-sensitive X-ray computed tomography (XCT) scans of pressure cores from northern Gulf of Mexico (Green Canyon Block 955). While several studies have used XCT to quantify gas hydrate in the fractures of fine-grained sediments, our study is the one of the few to use XCT for coarse-grained (sand and silt) reservoirs. We calibrate our new method with grain density and quantitative degassing measurements from the same intervals. This paper uses the density difference between gas hydrate (0.924 g/cm3) and porewater brine (1.035 g/cm3) and assume these changes linearly affect the XCT measurements allowing for estimates of hydrate saturation. Overall, the XCT calculations agree with the hydrate saturation from quantitative degassing. For example, in core H005-3FB-3, quantitative degassing indicated a hydrate saturation of 88 ±33.5%, while the XCT calculations yielded a 90 ±4 4.8% saturation. These results are encouraging as they suggest that XCT analysis has the potential to nondestructively estimate hydrate saturation.

Massive volumes of gas are sequestered within gas hydrate in subsurface marine sediments in the Gulf of Mexico. Methane associated with gas hydrate is a potentially important economic resource and a significant reservoir of carbon within the global carbon cycle. Nevertheless, uncertainties remain about the genetic source (e.g., microbial, thermogenic) and possible migration history of natural gas incorporated into hydrate. Previous studies have primarily used the hydrocarbon molecular (CH4/C2H6+) and isotopic (δ13C-CH4, δ2H-CH4) compositions of natural gas to address these uncertainties. However, hydrocarbon tracers are altered by mixing, oxidation, secondary methanogenesis, or fluid migration, which presents challenges when deciphering the mechanisms responsible for methane formation and accumulation. To evaluate the genetic source of natural gases from Green Canyon Block 955 (GC 955), east of the Sigsbee escarpment, we collected and analyzed samples from the first pressurized hydrate-bearing sediment cores collected from a coarse-grained hydrate reservoir in the Gulf of Mexico. Gas samples were analyzed for hydrocarbon (C1- C5), major gas (e.g., N2, CO2), and noble gas (He-Xe) abundance and isotopic (e.g., δ13C-CH4, δ2H-CH4, δ13C-CO2, δ15N-N2, 3He/4He, 4He/20Ne) compositions. We determined that natural gas in hydrates from this location are predominantly of primary microbial origin (conservatively at least 76%) and are formed by the hydrogenotrophic (CO2 reduction) methanogenesis pathway. We also note increased thermogenic proportions (~6%) in a hydrate-bearing layer below the main hydrate-bearing interval (separated by a 5 m water-bearing layer). Our results suggest that microbial methane may be abundant below the base of gas hydrate stability at GC 955.

Legislative design was a critical question at the 1787 Constitutional Convention. The peculiar compromise that was struck—featuring proportional and republican elements—defies the logic of the Convention’s majority rule. We investigate how in establishing the new national legislature, small state delegates were able to prevail over the large state majority and secure the Connecticut Compromise. We argue that the small state coalition’s victory owes to their strategy at a critical juncture: the Gerry Committee. The Gerry Committee amplified the contours of the debate over legislative design and the careful curation of its participants precipitated a shift of structural and creative freedom allowing for the consideration of alternative solutions. The Committee produced an environment favorable to a compromise on legislative structure and power by manipulating the policy dimensions connecting representation, taxation, and slavery. Participant curation was essential in allowing political opponents—the small states—to overcome unfavorable conditions, maximize utility, and craft a proposal capable of approval by delegates and eventual constitutional ratification.

We present results from 30 quantitative degassing experiments of pressure core sections collected during The University of Texas-Gulf of Mexico 2-1 (UT-GOM2-1) Hydrate Pressure Coring Expedition at Green Canyon Block 955 in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico as part of The University of Texas at Austin–US Department of Energy Deepwater Methane Hydrate Characterization and Scientific Assessment. The hydrate saturation (Sh), the volume fraction of the pore space occupied by hydrate, is 79% to 93% within sandy silt beds (centimeters to meters in thickness) between 413 and 442 m below seafloor in 2032 m water depth. Sandy silt intervals are characterized by high compressional wave velocity (Vp) (2515–3012 m s−1) and are interbedded with clayey silt sections that have lower Sh (2%–35%) and lower Vp (1684–2023 m s−1). Clayey silt intervals are composed of thin laminae of silts with high Sh within clay-rich intervals containing little to no hydrate. Degassing of single-lithofacies sections reveals higher-resolution variation in Sh than is possible to observe in well logs; however, the average Sh of 64% through the reservoir is similar to well log estimates. In May 2017, The University of Texas Hydrate Pressure Coring Expedition Gulf of Mexico 2-1 (UT-GOM2-1) drilled two adjacent holes in Green Canyon Block 955 in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico as part of The University of Texas at Austin and US Department of Energy Deepwater Methane Hydrate Characterization and Scientific Assessment. Expedition operations included testing two configurations of a rotary pressure-coring tool in a gas hydrate–bearing formation. In the first hole, an extended core barrel (cutting shoe) configuration of the Pressure Coring Tool with Ball Valve (PCTB-CS) was deployed, and in the second hole, the PCTB face bit configuration (PCTB-FB) was deployed. The PCTB-CS successfully recovered and maintained pressure for only one core out of eight deployments. A series of incremental modifications were made during and after the PCTB-CS deployment period that impacted the operations of the subsequent PCTB-FB deployments. Thus, in the second hole, the PCTB-FB successfully recovered and maintained pressure within the hydrate stability zone for 11 cores out of 13 deployments. The PCTB cored gas hydrate–bearing sandy silt interbedded with non–hydrate-bearing clayey silt within the main reservoir. The PCTB also recovered long intervals of unbroken, high-quality core with preserved sedimentary structures. We recovered one pressure core 130 m (437 ft) above the main hydrate reservoir in the silty clay. Pressure coring is the only available technology for recovering intact cores from sediment that is normally disturbed by gas expansion, dissolution, or dissociation; this allows a wide range of scientific measurements to be obtained with minimal disturbance to the core sediment fabric. Analysis of pressure cores has the potential to illuminate the in situ properties, gas saturation, and gas composition of a wide range of reservoirs including unconventional shale systems.

The University of Texas Hydrate Pressure Coring Expedition (UT-GOM2-1) recovered cores at near in situ formation pressures from a gas hydrate reservoir composed of sandy silt and clayey silt beds in Green Canyon Block 955 in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico. The expedition results are synthesized and linked to other detailed analyses presented in this volume. Millimeter- to meter-scale beds of sandy silt and clayey silt are interbedded on the levee of a turbidite channel. The hydrate saturation (the volume fraction of the pore space occupied by hydrate) in the sandy silts ranges from 79% to 93%, and there is little to no hydrate in the clayey silt. Gas from the hydrates is composed of nearly pure methane (99.99%) with less than 400 ppm of ethane or heavier hydrocarbons. The δ13C values from the methane are depleted (−60‰ to −65‰ Vienna Peedee belemnite), and it is interpreted that the gases were largely generated by primary microbial methanogenesis but that low concentrations of propane or heavier hydrocarbons record at least trace thermogenic components. The in situ pore-water salinity is very close to that of seawater. This suggests that the excess salinity generated during hydrate formation diffused away because the hydrate formed slowly or because it formed long ago. Because the sandy silt deposits have high hydrate concentration and high intrinsic permeability, they may represent a class of reservoir that can be economically developed. Results from this expedition will inform a new generation of reservoir simulation models that will illuminate how these reservoirs might be best produced.

We explore the petrophysical behavior of the two interbedded lithofacies (sandy silt and clayey silt) that constitute the Green Canyon Block 955 hydrate reservoir in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico by performing experiments on reconstituted samples of the reservoir material. Sandy silts reconstituted to the in situ porosity have a permeability of 11.8 md (1.18 × 10−14 m2), which is similar to the intrinsic permeabilities measured in intact cores from hydrate reservoirs of similar grain size offshore Japan (Nankai Trough) and offshore India. Reconstituted clayey silts have a much lower intrinsic permeability of 3.84 × 10−4 md (3.84 × 10−19 m2) at the in situ stress. The reconstituted sandy silt is less compressible than the clayey silt. Mercury injection capillary pressure measurements demonstrate that the largest pores with the clayey silt are still smaller than the pores remaining after 90% hydrate saturation in sandy silt. We interpret that the methane solubility in pores of clayey silt is always less than that necessary to form hydrate, which explains why no hydrate is present in the clayey silt. We upscale the reservoir properties to estimate the behavior of interbedded sandy silt and clayey silt. We find the upscaled intrinsic horizontal and vertical permeabilities for the entire reservoir interval are 8.6 md (8.6 × 10−15 m2) and 1.4 × 10−3 md (1.4 × 10−18 m2). We estimate that during reservoir production, a maximum vertical strain of approximately 12% will result. Ultimately, this study will inform reservoir simulation models with petrophysical properties at scales of both individual lithofacies and reservoir formation.

Smear slide petrography has been a standard technique during scientific ocean drilling expeditions to characterize sediment composition and classify sediment types, but presentation of these percent estimates to track downcore trends in sediment composition has become less frequent over the past 2 decades. We compare semi-quantitative smear slide composition estimates to physical property (natural gamma radiation, NGR) and solid-phase geochemical (calcium carbonate, CaCO3 %) measurements from a range of marine depositional environments in the northern Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, Ninetyeast Ridge) collected during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 353. We show that presenting smear slide estimates as percentages, rather than abundance categories, reveals similar downcore variation in composition to the more quantitative core analyses. Overall downcore trends in total calcareous components from smear slides (foraminifers + nannofossils + shell fragments + authigenic carbonate) follow similar downcore trends to samples measured by CaCO3 coulometry. Total lithogenic components (clay + mica + quartz + feldspars + lithic grains + vitric grains + glauconite + heavy minerals + iron oxides) and clay from smear slides track reasonably well with NGR measurements. Comparison of site averages of absolute percentages of total calcium carbonate from coulometry and total calcareous components from smear slide observations reveals an overestimation in carbonate percentages in smear slides (likely due in part to underestimation of the clay fraction), especially in sediments rich in smectite clays. Differences in sediment color between sites and settling of clay particles during slide preparation may contribute to this discrepancy. Although smear slide estimates range in accuracy depending on the training of the operator, we suggest that sedimentologists describing cores obtained during scientific drilling can use the percent estimates of sedimentary components in smear slides to identify trends and cyclicity in marine sediment records.

From manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, distributors to the consumers, all stakeholders are gearing up to use indoor asset tracking technologies to increase the visibility of goods and assets within their supply chain and their work environments. At its nascent stage, real-time asset tracking capabilities have been at the forefront of the connected production system and Industry 4.0. However, little is known regarding the scope, accuracy, reliability, and practical benefits of this emerging technology, which is hindering its widespread adoption. To better understand the tracking technologies, in this study, a generic asset tracking service framework for the indoor environment is presented. A comparative evaluation of the available approaches is also introduced using a Technology Enablers Evaluation Matrix, which tries to find out the suitability of asset tracking approaches for indoor location services. As pilot testing, we have evaluated the capabilities of the seamless location tracking capabilities developed by HERE Technologies and the Smart Manufacturing Demonstration Center (SMDC). Their asset tracking works indoor and outdoor seamlessly and uses GPS and Wi-Fi based methods as well as Bluetooth based tracking approaches. The testing evaluates seamless real-time asset tracking in the indoor environment and helps in finding a suitable tracking approach based on requirements.

Slow (8–15 day), stepwise, degassing of synthesized methane hydrate-bearing sand packs was used to determine in situ salinity to within 0.5 wt%. Rebounds in pressure during shut-in intervals between degassing steps record gradual hydrate dissociation. During successive dissociation steps and pressure rebounds, the pressure decreases more than predicted for a sample with homogenous salinity and temperature at thermodynamic equilibrium. We interpret that hydrate dissociation is limited by local pore water freshening and endothermic cooling around the dissociating hydrate. These results suggest that during production, hydrate dissociation in a reservoir will occur along the freshwater phase boundary even though the bulk salinity of the system may be higher. Pore pressure rebound during shut-in is more rapid in freshwater experiments than in brine experiments, which indicates that salt diffusion plays a role in limiting recovery to homogenous bulk equilibrium during hydrate dissociation. We demonstrate that it is possible to interpret the in-situ salinity from the temperature and pressure at the onset of dissociation. This approach can be applied to actual hydrate-bearing pressure core samples and the results will assist our understanding of how these hydrates form. Depressurization experiments with controlled shut-in periods provide insight into the role of salt and heat diffusion on dissociation in coarse-grained sediments, particularly relevant to pauses in production and in regions of a hydrate reservoir near the hydrate phase boundary.

Authigenic carbonate chemistry and mineralogy provide key insights into diagenetic pathways and microbial processes in sedimentary records. We characterize the mineralogy, elemental composition, and isotopic composition of 28 authigenic carbonate nodules recovered from coal-bearing forearc sediments offshore Shimokita Peninsula (Japan) to better understand fluid sources, diagenetic environments, and biogeochemical processes associated with subsiding sediments containing high organic carbon content. The carbonate nodules were collected at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site C0020 from sediment cores between 1604 and 2460 m below seafloor (mbsf) spanning a transition from terrestrial to marine depositional environments. Sediments recovered at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site C0020, in a forearc basin offshore Shimokita Peninsula, Japan, include numerous coal beds (0.3 – 7 m thick) that are associated with a transition from a terrestrial to marine depositional environment. Within the primary coal-bearing unit (∼2 km depth below seafloor) there are sharp increases in magnetic susceptibility in close proximity to the coal beds, superimposed on a background of consistently low magnetic susceptibility throughout the remainder of the recovered stratigraphic sequence. We investigate the source of the magnetic susceptibility variability and characterize the dominant magnetic assemblage throughout the entire cored record, using isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), thermal demagnetization, anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), iron speciation, and iron isotopes. Magnetic mineral assemblages in all samples are dominated by very low-coercivity minerals with unblocking temperatures between 350-580°C that are interpreted to be magnetite. Samples with lower unblocking temperatures (300-400°C), higher ARM, higher frequency dependence, and isotopically heavy δ56Fe across a range of lithologies in the coal-bearing unit (between 1925-1995 mbsf), indicate the presence of fine-grained authigenic magnetite. We suggest that iron-reducing bacteria facilitated the production of fine-grained magnetite within the coal-bearing unit during burial and interaction with pore waters. The coal/peat acted as a source of electron donors during burial, mediated by humic acids, to supply iron reducing bacteria in the surrounding siliciclastic sediments. These results indicate that coal-bearing sediments may play an important role in iron cycling in subsiding peat environments and if buried deeply through time, within the subsequent deep biosphere.

William Riker argued political skills and strategies can be developed through two methods: instruction or practice. Simulations offer opportunities for students to receive instruction in political strategies and practice developing political skills without the real-world consequences faced by policymakers. Budget simulations introduce students to collective action problems prevalent at all levels of American government. While developing and passing a budget provides students with practice, carefully constructing the simulation introduces the heresthetic tactics of agenda setting, strategic voting, and dimension manipulation. By incorporating these strategies into the simulation, students must navigate conflicting interests—maximize personal gains and risk not adopting a budget, or cooperate and approve a budget that may not align with personal preferences. When used in American government and political institution courses, the budget simulation helps students identify choices policymakers encounter and develop the skills necessary for navigating those situations and the broader policymaking process.

Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) of non-evaporitic origins has been observed in marine sedimentary environments over the past decade. Our understanding of related diagenetic processes has improved by analyzing the sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions of gypsum, but, a comprehensive study of the isotopic composition of authigenic gypsum precipitated in methane-rich marine environments has not been performed to elucidate their implications for the sulfur cycle (e.g., sulfide oxidation). Furthermore, there are no studies of authigenic gypsum associated with submarine mass transport deposits, which are common sedimentary features on continental slopes. In this study, we analyzed the sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions of gypsum and the sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite in drill cores collected from methane hydrate-bearing sites GMGS2–08, GMGS2–16, and GMGS4-W02B in the northern South China Sea to determine the formation mechanisms of authigenic gypsum. The stable sulfur isotopic analyses of gypsum and co-existing pyrite revealed that sulfate produced by pyrite oxidation contributed to gypsum precipitation. The low oxygen isotopic composition values of gypsum (−2.6 to 4.5‰ Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water) suggest that pyrite is oxidized by metal oxides under anaerobic conditions, incorporating water oxygen, whose isotopic composition was modified by gas hydrate formation, into the produced sulfate. As pyrite oxidation also releases protons (H+) into the porewater, calcium concentrations may be elevated by the dissolution of carbonate minerals. At sites GMGS2–08 and GMGS2–16, authigenic gypsum was precipitated within paleo sulfate-methane transition zones, indicating that gypsum formation is probably associated with the downward migration of the sulfate-methane transition zone, which causes anaerobic pyrite oxidation at its original site of formation. However, at site GMGS4-W02B, most of the gypsum was distributed in a mass transport deposit characterized by a high abundance of reworked foraminiferas between the two paleo sulfate-methane transition zones. Given that seawater sulfate contributes more (>85%) than pyrite oxidation to the gypsum sulfate at site GMGS4-W02B, it is believed that authigenic gypsum formation is associated with mass transport deposits, which can rapidly trap overlying seawater sulfate within the pore space of the newly deposited sediments, combined with the sulfate and calcium from pyrite oxidation, leading to a local gypsum supersaturation.

High quality gas compositional data are an important factor in interpreting the genetic source of natural gas hosted in hydrate-bearing sediments and other subsurface systems. In order to accurately characterize the composition of gas samples degassed from hydrate-bearing pressure cores, one must use a reproducible sampling technique that minimizes artifacts of the sampling process. Herein, we review sediment core degassing techniques and compare data obtained from a commonly used degassing approach, which we term the standard quantitative degassing (SQD) technique, to our newly developed modified quantitative degassing (MQD) method designed to minimize atmospheric contamination and gas-water interactions. The SQD method allows sample gas to interact with water in a bubbling chamber, which we hypothesize could alter the gas composition following mixing with water or dissolved gases in the bubbling chamber. Whereas, the MQD method allows for the collection of sample gas prior to the bubbling chamber. To compare the SQD and MQD methods, we performed a side-by-side comparison of noble (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe), major (H2, N2, O2, and CO2), and hydrocarbon (CH4, C2H6, C3H8, i-C4H10, C4H10, i-C5H12, C5H12) gas concentrations and select isotopic compositions obtained using both sample collection techniques. Gas samples were collected from hydrate-bearing pressure cores recovered and maintained under hydrate stable conditions from the northern Gulf of Mexico during the UT-GOM2-1 Expedition. The MQD method displayed significantly lower concentrations of atmospheric gases, higher proportions of hydrocarbon gases, lower ratios of C1/C2+, and heavier stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes of methane than the SQD method. These results demonstrate that the MQD method reduced air contamination and minimized alteration of the hydrocarbon gases. Therefore, we conclude this method may be important for future work that seeks to determine the composition of natural gas from pressure cores using quantitative degassing experiments, especially those seeking to measure major (e.g., N2) and noble gases.

Hydrate forms to a saturation of 11%, which is much lower than that predicted assuming three-phase (gas-hydrate-brine) thermodynamic equilibrium (67%). During hydrate formation, there are temporary flow blockages. We interpret that a hydrate skin forms a physical barrier at the gas-brine interface. The skin fails periodically when the pressure differential exceeds the skin strength. Once the skin is present, further hydrate formation is limited by the rate that methane can diffuse through the solid skin. This process produces distinct thermodynamic states on either side of the skin that allows gas to flow through the sample. This study illuminates how gas can be transported through the hydrate stability zone and thus provides a mechanism for the formation of concentrated hydrate deposits in sand reservoirs. It also illustrates that models that assume local equilibrium at the core-scale and larger may not capture the fundamental behaviors of these gas flow and hydrate formation processes.
