We propose and computationally implement a dynamic neural model of lexical meaning, and experimentally test its behavioral predictions. We demonstrate the architecture and behavior of the model using as a test case the English lexical item 'have', focusing on its polysemous use. In the model, 'have' maps to a semantic space defined by two continuous conceptual dimensions, connectedness and control asymmetry, previously proposed to parameterize the conceptual system for language. The mapping is modeled as coupling between a neural node representing the lexical item and neural fields representing the conceptual dimensions. While lexical knowledge is modeled as a stable coupling pattern, real-time lexical meaning retrieval is modeled as the motion of neural activation patterns between metastable states corresponding to semantic interpretations or readings. Model simulations capture two previously reported empirical observations: (1) contextual modulation of lexical semantic interpretation, and (2) individual variation in the magnitude of this modulation. Simulations also generate a novel prediction that the by-trial relationship between sentence reading time and acceptability should be contextually modulated. An experiment combining self-paced reading and acceptability judgments replicates previous results and confirms the new model prediction. Altogether, results support a novel perspective on lexical polysemy: that the many related meanings of a word are metastable neural activation states that arise from the nonlinear dynamics of neural populations governing interpretation on continuous semantic dimensions.

We study the interaction of a dark exciton Bose-Einstein condensate with the nuclei in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells and find clear evidence for nuclear polarization buildup that accompanies the appearance of the condensate. We show that the nuclei are polarized throughout the mesa area, extending to regions which are far away from the photoexcitation area, and persisting for seconds after the excitation is switched off. Photoluminescence measurements in the presence of RF radiation reveal that the hyperfine interaction between the nuclear and electron spins is enhanced by two orders of magnitude. We suggest that this large enhancement manifests the collective nature of the N-excitons condensate, which amplifies the interaction by a factor of sqrt{N}.

The collaboration in co-located shared environments has sparked an increased interest in immersive technologies, including Augmented Reality (AR). Since research in this field has primarily focused on individual user experiences in AR, the collaborative aspects within shared AR spaces remain less explored, and fewer studies can provide guidelines for designing this type of experience. This article investigates how the user experience in a collaborative shared AR space is affected by divergent perceptions of virtual objects and the effects of positional synchrony and avatars. For this purpose, we developed an AR app and used two distinct experimental conditions to study the influencing factors. Forty-eight participants, organized into 24 pairs, participated in the experiment and jointly interacted with shared virtual objects. Results indicate that divergent perceptions of virtual objects did not directly influence communication and collaboration dynamics. Conversely, positional synchrony emerged as a critical factor, significantly enhancing the quality of the collaborative experience. On the contrary, while not negligible, avatars played a relatively less pronounced role in influencing these dynamics. Previous work has demonstrated that words are hyperarticulated on dimensions of speech that differentiate them from a minimal pair competitor. This phenomenon has been termed contrastive hyperarticulation (CH). We present a dynamic neural field (DNF) model of voice onset time (VOT) planning that derives CH from an inhibitory influence of the minimal pair competitor during planning. We test some predictions of the model with a novel experiment investigating CH of voiceless stop consonant VOT in pseudowords. The results demonstrate a CH effect in pseudowords, consistent with a basis for the effect in the real-time planning and production of speech. The scope and magnitude of CH in pseudowords was reduced compared to CH in real words, consistent with a role for interactive activation between lexical and phonological levels of planning. We discuss the potential of our model to unify an apparently disparate set of phenomena, from CH to phonological neighborhood effects to phonetic trace effects in speech errors.

Symmetry considerations are key towards our understanding of the fundamental laws of Nature. The presence of a symmetry implies that a physical system is invariant under specific transformations and this invariance may have deep consequences. For instance, symmetry arguments state that a system will remain in its initial state if incentives to actions are equally balanced. Here, we apply this principle to a chain of qubits and show that it is possible to engineer the symmetries of its Hamiltonian in order to keep quantum information intrinsically protected from both relaxation and decoherence. We show that the coherence properties of this system are strongly enhanced relative to those of its individual components. Such a qubit chain can be realized using a simple architecture consisting of a relatively small number of superconducting Josephson junctions.

We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate consisting of dark excitons forms in GaAs coupled quantum wells at low temperatures. We find that the condensate extends over hundreds of micrometers, well beyond the optical excitation region, and is limited only by the boundaries of the mesa. We show that the condensate density is determined by spin flipping collisions among the excitons, which convert dark excitons into bright ones. The suppression of this process at low temperature yields a density buildup, manifested as a temperature-dependent blueshift of the exciton emission line. Measurements under in-plane magnetic field allows us to preferentially modify the bright excitons density, and determine their role in the system dynamics. We find that their interaction with the condensate leads to its depletion. We present a simple rate equations model, which well-reproduces the observed temperature, power, and magnetic field dependence of the exciton density.

A promising venue for hybrid quantum computation involves the strong coupling between impurity spins and superconducting resonators. One strategy to control and enhance this coupling is to prepare the resonator in a non-classical state, such as a squeezed state. In this work, we theoretically study the effects of these states on the coherence properties of the spin. We develop an analytic approach based on the Schrieffer-Wolf transformation that allows us to quantitatively predict the coupling and the dephasing rate of the spin, and we numerically confirm its validity. We find that squeezing can enhance the coupling between the resonator and the spin. However, at the same time, it amplifies the photon noise and enhances the spin decoherence. Cardiac muscle contraction is initiated by an elementary Ca signal (called Ca spark) which is achieved by collective action of Ca release channels in a cluster. The mechanism of this synchronization remains uncertain. This paper approaches Ca spark activation as an emergent phenomenon of an interactive system of release channels. We construct a Markov chain that applies an Ising model formalism to such release channel clusters and realistic open channel configurations to demonstrate that spark activation is described as a system transition from a metastable to an absorbing state, analogous to the pressure required to overcome surface tension in bubble formation. This yields quantitative estimates of the spark generation probability as a function of various system parameters. Our model of the release channel system yields similar results for the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca concentration threshold for spark activation as previous experimental results, providing a mechanistic explanation of the spark initiation. Heart muscle contraction is normally activated by a synchronized Ca release from sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), a major intracellular Ca store. However, under abnormal conditions Ca leaks from the SR, decreasing heart contraction amplitude and increasing risk of life-threatening arrhythmia. The mechanisms and regimes of SR operation generating the abnormal Ca leak remain unclear. Here we employed both numerical and analytical modeling to get mechanistic insights into the emergent Ca leak phenomenon. Our numerical simulations using a detailed realistic model of Ca release unit (CRU) reveal sharp transitions resulting in Ca leak. The emergence of leak is closely mapped mathematically to the Ising model from statistical mechanics. The system steady-state behavior is determined by two aggregate parameters: the analogues of magnetic field ($h$) and the inverse temperature ($\beta$) in the Ising model, for which we have explicit formulas in terms of SR Ca and release channel opening/closing rates. The classification of leak regimes takes the shape of a phase $\beta$-$h$ diagram, with the regime boundaries occurring at $h$=0 and a critical value of $\beta$ ($\beta*$) which we estimate using a classical Ising model and mean field theory. Our theory predicts that a synchronized Ca leak will occur when $h$>0 and $\beta>\beta*$ and a disordered leak occurs when $\beta<\beta*$ and $h$ is not too negative. The disorder leak is distinguished from synchronized leak (in long-lasting sparks) by larger Peierls contour lengths, an output parameter reflecting degree of disorder. We study the exciton gas-liquid transition in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells. Below a critical temperature, Tc=4.8K, and above a threshold laser power density the system undergoes a phase transition into a liquid state. We determine the density temperature phase diagram over the temperature range 0.1 to 4.8K. We find that the latent heat increases linearly with temperature at T<1.1K, similarly to a Bose Einstein condensate transition, and becomes constant at 1.1

Local Ca Releases (LCRs) are crucial events involved in cardiac pacemaker cell function. However, specific algorithms for automatic LCR detection and analysis have not been developed in live, spontaneously beating pacemaker cells. Here we measured LCRs using a high-speed 2D-camera in spontaneously contracting sinoatrial (SA) node cells isolated from rabbit and guinea pig and developed a new algorithm capable of detecting and analyzing the LCRs spatially in two-dimensions, and in time. Our algorithm tracks points along the midline of the contracting cell. It uses these points as a coordinate system for affine transform, producing a transformed image series where the cell does not contract. Action potential-induced Ca transients and LCRs were thereafter isolated from recording noise by applying a series of spatial filters. The LCR birth and death events were detected by a differential (frame-to-frame) sensitivity algorithm. An LCR was detected when its signal changes sufficiently quickly within a sufficiently large area. The LCR is considered to have died when its amplitude decays substantially, or when it merges into the rising whole cell Ca transient. Our algorithm provides major LCR parameters such as period, signal mass, duration, and path area. As LCRs propagate within cells, the algorithm identifies splitting and merging behaviors, indicating the importance of Ca-induced-Ca-release for the fate of LCRs and for generating a powerful ensemble Ca signal. Thus, our new computer algorithms eliminate motion artifacts and detect 2D local spatiotemporal Ca release events from recording noise and global signals. Intracellular Ca signals represent a universal mechanism of cell function. Messages carried by Ca are local, rapid, and powerful enough to be delivered over the thermal noise. A higher signal to noise ratio is achieved by a cooperative action of Ca release channels such as IP3 receptors or ryanodine receptors arranged in clusters or release units containing a few to several hundred release channels. The release channels synchronize their openings via Ca-induced-Ca-release, generating high-amplitude local Ca signals known as puffs in neurons or sparks in muscle cells. Despite the high release amplitude and positive feedback nature of the activation, Ca signals are strictly confined in time and space by an unexplained termination mechanism. Here we show that the collective transition of release channels from an open to a closed state is identical to the phase transition associated with the reversal of magnetic field in an Ising ferromagnet. We demonstrate this mechanism using numerical model simulations of Ca sparks over a wide range of cluster sizes from 25 to 169 release channels. While prior studies suggested contributions of stochastic attrition and Ca store depletion, our new simple quantitative criterion closely predicts the depletion level required for spark termination for each cluster size. We further formulate exact requirements for a cluster of release channels to follow the Ising model in any cell type. Thus we describe deterministically the behaviour of a system on a coarser scale (release unit) which is random on a finer scale (release channels), bridging the gap between scales. Our results provide the first exact mapping of a nanoscale biological signalling model to an interacting particle system in statistical physics, making the extensive mathematical apparatus available to quantitative biology., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, 4 videos. We present a theoretical proposal to couple a single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center to a superconducting flux qubit (FQ) in the regime where both systems are off resonance. The coupling between both quantum devices is achieved through the strong driving of the flux qubit by a classical microwave field that creates dressed states with an experimentally controlled characteristic frequency. We discuss several applications such as controlling the NV center's state by manipulation of the flux qubit, performing the NV center full tomography and using the NV center as a quantum memory. The effect of decoherence and its consequences to the proposed applications are also analyzed.
