The aim of this study was to investigate and clarify the ambiguous taxonomy of Actinomyces naeslundii and its closely related species using state-of-the-art high-throughput sequencing techniques, and, furthermore, to determine whether sub-clusters identified within Actinomyces oris and Actinomyces naeslundii in a previous study by multi locus sequence typing (MLST) using concatenation of seven housekeeping genes should either be classified as subspecies or distinct species. The strains in this study were broadly classified under Actinomyces naeslundii group as A. naeslundii genospecies I and genospecies II. Based on MLST data analysis, these were further classified as A. oris and A. naeslundii. The whole genome sequencing of selected strains of A. oris (n = 17) and A. naeslundii (n = 19) was carried out using Illumina Genome Analyzer IIxe and Roche 454 allowing paired-end and single-reads sequencing, respectively. The sequences obtained were aligned using CLC Genomic workbench version 5.1 and annotated using RAST (Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology) release version 59 accessible online. Additionally, genomes of seven publicly available strains of Actinomyces (k20, MG1, c505, OT175, OT171, OT170, and A. johnsonii) were also included. Comparative genomic analysis (CGA) using Mauve, Progressive Mauve, gene-by-gene, Core, and Pan Genome, and finally Digital DNA-DNA homology (DDH) analysis was carried out. DDH values were obtained using in silico genome–genome comparison. Evolutionary analysis using ClonalFrame was also undertaken. The mutation and recombination events were compared using chi-square test among A. oris and A. naeslundii isolates (analysis methods are not included in the study). CGA results were consistent with previous traditional classification using MLST. It was found that strains of Actinomyces k20, MG1, c505, and OT175 clustered in A. oris group of isolates, while OT171, OT170, and A. johnsonii appeared as separate branches. Similar clustering to MLST was observed for other isolates. The mutation and recombination events were significantly higher in A. oris than A. naeslundii, highlighting the diversity of A. oris strains in the oral cavity. These findings suggest that A. oris forms six distinct groups, whereas A. naeslundii forms three. The correct designation of isolates will help in the identification of clinical Actinomyces isolates found in dental plaque. Easily accessible online genomic sequence data will also accelerate the investigation of the biochemical characterisation and pathogenesis of this important group of micro-organisms.

Objective To investigate the role of PF-06650833, a highly potent and selective small-molecule inhibitor of interleukin-1-associated kinase 4 (IRAK4), in autoimmune pathophysiology in vitro, in vivo, and in the clinical setting. Methods Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) inflammatory pathophysiology was modeled in vitro through 1) stimulation of primary human macrophages with anti-citrullinated protein antibody immune complexes (ICs), 2) RA fibroblast-like synoviocyte (FLS) cultures stimulated with Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands, as well as 3) additional human primary cell cocultures exposed to inflammatory stimuli. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pathophysiology was simulated in human neutrophils, dendritic cells, B cells, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with TLR ligands and SLE patient ICs. PF-06650833 was evaluated in vivo in the rat collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model and the mouse pristane-induced and MRL/lpr models of lupus. Finally, RNA sequencing data generated with whole blood samples from a phase I multiple-ascending-dose clinical trial of PF-06650833 were used to test in vivo human pharmacology. Results In vitro, PF-06650833 inhibited human primary cell inflammatory responses to physiologically relevant stimuli generated with RA and SLE patient plasma. In vivo, PF-06650833 reduced circulating autoantibody levels in the pristane-induced and MRL/lpr murine models of lupus and protected against CIA in rats. In a phase I clinical trial (NCT02485769), PF-06650833 demonstrated in vivo pharmacologic action pertinent to SLE by reducing whole blood interferon gene signature expression in healthy volunteers. Conclusion These data demonstrate that inhibition of IRAK4 kinase activity can reduce levels of inflammation markers in humans and provide confidence in the rationale for clinical development of IRAK4 inhibitors for rheumatologic indications.

Prediction of treatment responses is essential to move forward translational science. Our question was to identify patient-based variables that predicted responses to treatments. We conducted secondary analyses on pooled data from 2 randomized Phase 3 clinical trials (NCT02697773 and NCT02709486) conducted in participants with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis randomized to subcutaneous placebo (n=514) or tanezumab 2.5 mg (n=514). We used gradient boosted regression trees to identify variables that predicted Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain subscale scores at week 16 and marginal plots to determine the directional relationship between each variable category and responses to placebo or tanezumab within the models. We also used Virtual Twins models to identify potential subgroups of response to the active treatment versus placebo. We found that responses to placebo were predicted by baseline WOMAC Physical Function, baseline WOMAC Pain, the radiographic classification of the index joint, and the standard deviation of diary pain scores at baseline. In contrast, baseline WOMAC Pain along with failure of prior medications, duration of disease and standard deviation of diary pain scores at baseline were predictive of tanezumab responses as expressed by the WOMAC Pain scores at week 16. Those who responded to tanezumab versus placebo were identified based on the radiographic classification of the index joint and either age or smoking status. These secondary-data analyses identified distinct and common patient-based variables to predict response to placebo or tanezumab. These findings will inform the design of future clinical trials helping to move forward clinical pharmacology and translational science.

Background In 2016, the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use updated its efficacy guideline for good clinical practice and introduced quality tolerance limits (QTLs) as a quality control in clinical trials. Previously, TransCelerate proposed a framework for QTL implementation and parameters. Historical data can be important in helping to determine QTL thresholds in new clinical trials. Methods This article presents results of historical data analyses for the previously proposed parameters based on data from 294 clinical trials from seven TransCelerate member companies. The differences across therapeutic areas were assessed by comparing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and oncology trials using a separate dataset provided by Medidata. Results TransCelerate member companies provided historical data on 11 QTL parameters with data sufficient for analysis for parameters. The distribution of values was similar for most parameters with a relatively small number of outlying trials with high parameter values. Medidata provided values for three parameters in a total of 45 AD and oncology trials with no obvious differences between the therapeutic areas. Conclusion Historical parameter values can provide helpful benchmark information for quality control activities in future trials.

Pre-natal and post-natal chemical exposures and co-exposures from a variety of sources including contaminated air, water, soil, and food are common and associated with poorer birth and child health outcomes. Poor diet is a contributing factor in the development of child behavioral disorders. Child behavior and learning can be adversely impacted when gene expression is altered by dietary transcription factors such as zinc insufficiency or deficiency or by exposure to toxic substances permitted in our food supply such as mercury, lead, or organophosphate pesticide residue. Children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders exhibit decreased or impaired PON1 gene activity which is needed by the body to metabolize and excrete neurotoxic organophosphate pesticides. In this current review we present an updated macroepigenetic model that explains how dietary inorganic mercury and lead exposures from unhealthy diet may lead to elevated blood mercury and/or lead levels and the development of symptoms associated with the autism and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorders. PON1 gene activity may be suppressed by inadequate dietary calcium, selenium, and fatty acid intake or exposures to lead or mercury. The model may assist clinicians in diagnosing and treating the symptoms associated with these childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. Recommendations for future research are provided based on the updated model and review of recently published literature.

Changes in historical disturbance regimes have been shown to facilitate non-native plant invasions, but reinstatement of disturbance can be successful only if native colonizers are able to outcompete colonizing invasives. Reintroduction of flooding in the southwestern United States is being promoted as a means of reestablishing Populus deltoides subsp. wislizenii, but flooding can also promote establishment of an introduced, invasive species, Tamarix ramosissima. We investigated competition between Populus and Tamarix at the seedling stage to aid in characterizing the process by which Tamarix may invade and to determine the potential ability of Populus to establish itself with competitive pressure from Tamarix. We planted seedlings of Tamarix and Populus in five ratios at three densities for a total of 15 treatments. The growth response of each species was measured in terms of height, above-ground biomass, and tissue concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous. These measurements across treatments were modeled as three-dimensional response surfaces. For both species, Populus density was more important than Tamarix density for determining growth response. Both species were negatively affected by increasing numbers of Populus seedlings. Due to the larger size of the native Populus, we predict that its superior competitive ability can lead to its dominance when conditions allow native establishment. Our results suggest that even in the presence of an invader that positively responds to disturbance, reestablishment of historical flooding regimes and post-flood hydrology can restore this ecosystem by promoting its dominant plant species.Los cambios en los regímenes históricos de perturbaciones han mostrado que facilitan invasiones de plantas no nativas; sin embargo, la reinstauración de la perturbación solo puede ser exitosa si los colonizadores nativos son capaces de competir y desplazar a las especies invasoras. Outdated federal and state occupational lead standards leave workers and their families vulnerable to the adverse effects of lead. Standards should be updated to reflect the best available scientific and medical evidence, which documents harm to multiple organ systems even at low levels of exposure. This commentary will review the inadequacies of existing policies, highlight susceptible populations, and briefly summarize state revision efforts to date. Federal policies must be strengthened to protect all workers and their families from this well-documented hazard.

Toxicologists are confronted with two educational challenges: first, acquiring the fundamental and specialty knowledge; and second, to keep pace with the rapid advances across the vast landscape of the toxicological sciences. A career in toxicology offers a wide range of opportunities that cross many disciplines and will provide a lifetime of challenges. Employment opportunities in toxicology include basic research, regulatory, and safety evaluation positions. Toxicologists work in many areas, such as public health, law, academic, industrial, pharmaceutical, government, or nonprofit institutes. The work of a toxicologist affects almost every aspect of our lives by ensuring that what we eat, breathe, and drink is not harmful. Following is a list of career and continuing education opportunities, followed by a list of on-site and distance-learning university affiliated programs in toxicology. The reader is encouraged to check an institution’s website for updated information on its programs.

Trial design We report results from a phase IIa study of efficacy and safety of PF-06700841, an oral TYK2/Jak1 inhibitor, in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis ( NCT02969018 ). Methods Patients were randomized to PF-06700841 30 mg once daily (QD), 60 mg QD, or placebo (4-week induction), followed by 10 mg QD, 30 mg QD, 100 mg once weekly, or placebo (8-week maintenance). The primary endpoint was week 12 change from baseline in PASI score. Secondary endpoints were the proportion of patients achieving 75% and 90% reduction from baseline PASI at week 12. Results In total, 212 patients in 35 sites were treated; mean (SD) baseline PASI score was 20.8 (7.68). Decreases in PASI at week 12 were statistically significant compared with placebo in five treatment groups. The greatest change from baseline (least squares mean change –17.3 [95% confidence interval, –20.0 to –14.6]) was observed in the 30-mg QD continuous treatment group. Overall, 136 patients experienced treatment-emergent adverse events, including six serious adverse events in five patients and 13 discontinuations in treatment groups because of adverse events. No herpes zoster cases or major adverse cardiac events including thromboembolic events occurred. Conclusions PF-06700841 was generally effective and well tolerated in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

One of the continuing challenges of education is enabling those who strive to improve teaching, learning, and research to take advantage of the too-rapidly-changing new environment created by telecommunications and information technologies. To do so, educational professionals should engage in lifelong professional development and use new hybrid technologies to help build community and support collaboration. This paper explores the issues of technology and professional development from the frame of reference of my work with hundreds of colleges that have benefited from the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Group (TLT Group), an organization whose mission is to motivate and enable institutions and individuals to improve teaching and learning with technology, while helping them cope with change. This article discusses challenges that higher education faces: creating visions worth working toward; developing strategies and tools for achieving intermediate goals; and the importance of breaking taboos along the way.

Among dietary factors, learning and behavior are influenced not only by nutrients, but also by exposure to toxic food contaminants such as mercury that can disrupt metabolic processes and alter neuronal plasticity. Neurons lacking in plasticity are a factor in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Essential nutrients help maintain normal neuronal plasticity. Nutritional deficiencies, including deficiencies in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the amino acid methionine, and the trace minerals zinc and selenium, have been shown to influence neuronal function and produce defects in neuronal plasticity, as well as impact behavior in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nutritional deficiencies and mercury exposure have been shown to alter neuronal function and increase oxidative stress among children with autism. These dietary factors may be directly related to the development of behavior disorders and learning disabilities. Mercury, either individually or in concert with other factors, may be harmful if ingested in above average amounts or by sensitive individuals. High fructose corn syrup has been shown to contain trace amounts of mercury as a result of some manufacturing processes, and its consumption can also lead to zinc loss. Consumption of certain artificial food color additives has also been shown to lead to zinc deficiency. Dietary zinc is essential for maintaining the metabolic processes required for mercury elimination. Since high fructose corn syrup and artificial food color additives are common ingredients in many foodstuffs, their consumption should be considered in those individuals with nutritional deficits such as zinc deficiency or who are allergic or sensitive to the effects of mercury or unable to effectively metabolize and eliminate it from the body.

What are estimands, and what is there connecting with missing data? The topic of estimands is all about interpreting the results of our statistical analyses in the context of the original scientific questions that we intend to answer in a clinical trial. Missing data, a ubiquitous problem in clinical trials, require additional assumptions and choices on how to collect and analyze data that can have an unexpected impact on the interpretation of these analyses.

This summary provides a synopsis of talks included in a symposium entitled “Current Needs and Future Directions of Occupational Safety and Heath in a Globalized World”. The purpose of the symposium was to (1) highlight national and international agencies with occupational health related activities; (2) address electronic (e-)waste issues in developing countries where exposures are secondary to the handling and scavenging of scrap; and (3) discuss the effects of hazardous materials, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and tobacco smoke on child intelligence quotient (IQ) in developing countries.

Coping with a romantic breakup is a normal developmental task of emerging adulthood. Because of their role in influencing interpersonal relationships and adjustment, attachment history and time perspectives may influence resilience to romantic loss. In an online survey of 1,404 university students ages 18–25 who reported experiencing recent breakups, individuals with secure parental bonding, past positive time orientation, and lower future relationship orientation reported less distress after their breakup. However, time perspectives did not buffer the negative effects of poor parental bonding on mental health. These results suggest that professionals counseling college students experiencing breakups might consider addressing parental bonding and time orientation.

Both sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality are prominent in American society, especially in college student populations. Sleep problems are often a primary disorder rather than secondary to depression. The purpose of the present study was to determine if sleep deprivation and/or poor sleep quality in a sample of nondepressed university students was associated with lower academic performance. A significant negative correlation between Global Sleep Quality score (GSQ) on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and grade point average supports the hypothesis that poor sleep quality is associated with lower academic performance for nondepressed students. Implications for both the remedial (assessment and treatment) and preventive (outreach) work of college and university counseling centers is discussed.

Purpose Ligands for the proinflammatory C-C chemokine receptor types 2 and 5 (CCR2 and CCR5) are elevated in the eyes of patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). We evaluated the efficacy and safety of PF-04634817, an oral CCR2/5 dual antagonist, versus intravitreal ranibizumab, in adult subjects with DME. Methods In this phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked study, eligible subjects (≥18 years of age) had type 1 or 2 diabetes and DME with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/32 or worse (letter score ≤ 78), and up to 20/320 or better (≥24 letter score), in the study eye. Subjects were assigned randomly 1:1 to once-daily (QD) oral PF-04634817 200 mg plus masked sham therapy as placebo or monthly intravitreal ranibizumab 0.3/0.5 mg plus QD oral placebo. The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of PF-04634817 compared with ranibizumab in change from baseline in BCVA after 12 weeks in a noninferiority design. Noninferiority was based on BCVA 80% confidence interval (CI): there had to be a less than three letter loss in the PF-04634817 arm compared with the ranibizumab arm. Results A total of 199 subjects were randomized. Least squares mean difference in change in BCVA from baseline to week 12 in the study eye for the PF-04634817 arm was -2.41 letters (80% CI: -3.91, -0.91; P = 0.04) compared with ranibizumab. PF-04634817 was well tolerated. Conclusions Treatment with oral CCR2/5 receptor dual antagonist PF-04634817 was associated with a modest improvement in BCVA, but did not meet the predefined noninferiority criteria compared with intravitreal ranibizumab.

Neurotoxicology is entering a new phase in how it views and practices risk assessment. Perhaps more than any of the other disciplines that comprise the science of toxicology, it has been compelled to consider a daunting array of factors other than those directly coupled to chemical and dose, and the age and sex of the subject population. In epidemiological investigations, researchers are increasingly cognizant of the problems introduced by allegedly controlling for variables classified as confounders or covariates. In essence, they reason, the consequence is blurring or even concealing interactions of exposure with modifiers such as the individual’s social ecology. Other researchers question the traditional practice of relying on values such as NOAELs when they are abstracted from a biological entity that in reality represents a multiplicity of intertwined systems. Although neurotoxicologists have come to recognize the complexities of assessing risk in all its dimensions, they still face the challenge of communicating this view to the health professions at large.

Recognition of the adverse effects of epigenetic changes coincides with a growing appreciation that even very low levels of exposure to toxic agents can cause adverse effects, especially in the developing organism. Application of the science of epigenetics requires reconsideration of an ethical framework for decision making. We describe corporate, government, media, academic, and individual approaches to epigenetic responsibility for current and future generations. Some form of an epiprecautionary approach is necessary to ensure an individual can reach and maintain their full potential. Our ethical challenge or responsibility is to create an environment that is free of toxic agents and nurtures physical and emotional health, allowing all individuals to reach and maintain their full potential.

Background Community-based research often involves additional ethical, legal, and social considerations beyond those of the specific individuals involved in the study. The traditional institutional review board (IRB) typically focuses on protecting the rights and ensuring the safety of the individuals involved. For projects involving community members, IRBs should be more sensitive to issues related to the broader community concerns. Objectives The objective of this article is to discuss the concept of community-based participatory research and the shortcomings of the traditional IRBs in dealing with ethical issues associated with broader community concerns such as implications for family members, neighborhood groups, and local businesses. I examine the rationale and benefits for expanding the roles and responsibilities of review boards related to community-based issues. Discussion I propose the development of environmental health and community review boards (EHCRBs) that combine the fundamental responsibilities and ethical concept of the traditional review boards with an expanded ethical construct of dignity, veracity, sustainability, and justice, with an added emphasis on community. Conclusions Only by acknowledging the needs of and working with the community can we ensure ethically based and socially responsible research. An EHCRB will allow researchers and community members to more fully address their mutual interest in conducting scientific, ethical, and socially responsible research.

A convergence of issues suggests that protecting child health is not so much a matter of research, but rather a matter of policy and advocacy. First, we have well-articulated views of a vision for child health. Second, we have experience and toxicological research findings demonstrating the adverse health effects of hazardous chemicals on children and recognize that children are more sensitive than adults to chemical exposures. Results from toxicology research have motivated many regulatory and legal actions, and public policy decisions, including the banning of some pesticides, reducing exposures in the workplace, and lowering of acceptable blood lead levels in children. We also know that childhood disabilities from chemical exposure during developmental are often not treatable and therefore must be prevented. Finally, we have an increasingly well-defined framework for discussing social and ethical responsibility to our children. New discoveries in the basic biological and toxicological sciences have challenged our bioethical thinking and societal decision-making. This paper will explore the ethical, legal, and social issues raised by the toxicological sciences first by examining some hard lesson learned about childhood effects of chemicals and then by examining the difficult policy and research decisions that must be made as we address our need for additional information about the health effects of chemicals on adults and children and the impact of having this information. The precautionary principle will be considered as an alternative decision-making approach as well as exploring the concept of the citizen toxicologist (CT). As Garrett Hardin pointed out many years ago, the problems we face often have no technical solutions, but rather require a policy-based approach. This paper will be of interest to the public and health professionals concerned about the broader impact of toxicological research on bioethical and societal decision-making.

There is no doubt that participants in the Conflict of Interest (COI) Workshop at the Society of Toxicology (SOT) 2005 Annual Meeting (New Orleans, 6-10 March 2005) engaged in a vigorous and useful exchange of diverse ideas and viewpoints. While there was consensus on the value and interest of this Workshop, there was less consensus and more controversy over many of the issues discussed during the Workshop, which included the distinction between bias and conflict, the success or failure of policies of disclosure, whether waivers should or should not be granted to conflicted individuals in order to seat a "balanced" committee with appropriate expertise, whether conflicted individuals retain the ability to recognize their own conflict, and more. The discussion left no doubt, however, that conflict of interest will remain an important and controversial issue in the scientific community for some time to come.

In a search for quasi-bound states, or resonances, high-resolution measurements (?E~25?meV) of the total positron scattering cross sections have been carried out in the energy region of the first electronically excited states of H2, N2, CO and Ar. In the case of H2, a recent calculation by Varella et al predicts such a resonance in the total elastic cross section near the excitation threshold for the B 1?u+ state. We find no experimental evidence for the existence of this resonance and also find similar negative results for the other atomic and molecular targets.

The taxonomic position of a dibenzothiophene-desulphurizing soil actinomycete was established using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The organism, strain IEGMT, was shown to have chemical and morphological properties typical of members of the genus Gordonia. The tested strain formed a distinct phyletic line within the evolutionary radiation occupied by the genus Gordonia, with Gordonia alkanivorans DSM 44369T, Gordonia desulfuricans NCIMB 40816T and Gordonia rubropertincta DSM 43197T as the most closely related organisms. Strain IEGMT has a range of phenotypic properties that distinguish it from representatives of all of the validly described species of Gordonia. It was also sharply distinguished from the type strains of Gordonia desulfuricans and Gordonia rubropertincta on the basis of DNA-DNA relatedness data. The combined genotypic and phenotypic data show that strain IEGMT merits recognition as a new species of Gordonia. The name proposed for the new species is Gordonia amicalis; the type strain is IEGMT (= DSM 44461T = KCTC 9899T).

The taxonomic position of two actinomycetes isolated from soil was established using a polyphasic approach. The organisms, designated 213ET and 213F, were found to have chemical and morphological properties consistent with their assignment to the genus Gordonia. Nearly complete sequences of the 16S rDNA genes of the two strains were determined following the isolation and direct sequencing of the amplified genes. The tested strains were found to have identical 16S rDNA sequences and formed a phylogenetic line within the evolutionary radiation occupied by the genus Gordonia that was most closely related to Gordonia rubropertincta DSM 43197T. However, DNA-DNA relatedness data showed that strain 213ET and Gordonia rubropertincta DSM 43197T belonged to distinct genomic species. Strains 213ET and 213F also shared an identical phenotypic profile which distinguished them from representatives of validly described Gordonia species. The combined genotypic and phenotypic data show that strains 213ET and 213F merit recognition as a new species of Gordonia. The name proposed for the new species is Gordonia desulfuricans, for which the type strain is 213ET (= NCIMB 40816T).

Gordona sp. strain 213E (NCIMB 40816) grew in pure culture in a mineral salts medium containing fructose as a source of carbon and energy, and benzothiophene (BTH) as the sole source of sulphur. During growth a phenolic compound accumulated, as indicated by the production of a blue colour on addition of Gibb's reagent. Therefore this pathway is analogous to the dibenzothiophene (DBT) desulphurization pathway of Rhodococcus sp. strain IGTS8, in which 2-hydroxybiphenyl accumulates during growth with DBT as the sole sulphur source. Ethyl acetate extraction of the culture medium yielded the metabolites benzothiophene S-oxide (BTHO), benzothiophene S,S-dioxide (BTHO2), benzo[c][1,2]oxathiin 6-oxide (BcOTO), 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)ethan 1-al (HPEal) and benzofuran (BFU). The deduced pathway for BTH desulphurization is BTH ? BTHO ? BTHO2 ? HPESi- ? HPEal. HPESi- is (Z)-2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)ethen 1-sulphinate, the stable aqueous-solution form of BcOTO. It was concluded that HPEal was the Gibb's-reagent-reactive phenolic compound which accumulated in the culture medium of strain 213E during growth, and that the presence of BFU was due to partial condensation of HPEal during the ethyl acetate extraction procedure. Gordona sp. strain 213E was unable to grow in a mineral salts medium containing fructose as a source of carbon and energy and DBT as the sole sulphur source. BTH-desulphurization-active cells (grown using BTH as sole sulphur source) were unable to desulphurize DBT. Likewise Rhodococcus sp. strain IGTS8 was unable to grow using BTH as the sole sulphur source, and DBT-desulphurization-active cells of strain IGTS8 (grown using DBT as sole sulphur source) were unable to desulphurize BTH. This absence of cross-reactivity is discussed in terms of fundamental differences in the chemistry of the DBT- and BTH-desulphurization reactions.
