Since June 2000, the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has delivered the first collisions between Au nuclei at the highest center of mass energies achieved in the laboratory to date. PHOBOS is one of four experiments studying the Au + Au interactions at RHIC. In this paper we will describe the PHOBOS experiment, and discuss some of the current physics results obtained for Au + Au collisions at \(\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 56\) and 130 and 200 GeV. They include the study of the charged particle multiplicity as a function of pseudo-rapidity and centrality, and the measurements of the antiparticles to particles ratios. The observed charged particle densities near mid-rapidity are higher than previously measured in any nuclear collisions. Also the rate of increase of the mid-rapidity particle density with energy is faster than that for nucleon-nucleon collisions at comparable beam energies. Finally, the antiparticle to particle ratios indicate the creation of a nearly baryon free zone at mid-rapidity.

The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC, which is currently under construction, is designed to measure the particle multiplicity and to reconstruct low-momentum tracks in heavy ion Au–Au collisions. Both tasks are accomplished with silicon pad detectors. The silicon pad detectors are single-side devices with up to 1540 pads per detector. A special double-metal readout scheme for pad detectors provides a cost-effective method to connect detectors with different pad geometries to identical standard VLSI electronics. Different pad geometries have been designed and tested to optimise the pulse height and position measurement. Results of tests on the signal response and detector parameters for different pad configurations are be presented.

- Abstract
“[Manly] has succeeded in creating a succinct introduction to multiple universes within the historic context of theoretical physics.” —Foreword ReviewsThe idea of a multiple universe reality is no longer considered speculative or implausible by many physicists; rather, it is deemed inescapable. Distinct concepts of the multiverse spring from quantum mechanics, cosmology, string theory-based cosmology, and ideas about a mathematics-based reality that borders on the religious. In this accessible and entertaining book, Dr. Manly guides you on a tour of the many multiverse concepts and provides the non-technical background to understand them.Visions of the Multiverse explores questions such as:Just what is a multiverse? What are the different concepts of the multiverse and how are they related? Is it possible to determine if we live in a multiverse... or even in multiple types of multiverses? How do religious concepts of the afterlife and popular ideas based on the Law of Attraction relate to the scientific visions of the multiverse?Dr. Manly discusses a wide variety of fascinating concepts from relativity and the fundamental particles and forces of nature to dark matter, dark energy, and quantum mechanics in an unintimidating and conversational tone.Is humanity in the midst of a new Copernican revolution? You decide.

We present results from the PHOBOS experiment on charged hadron production over a large range in $p_{\rm T}$ , from Data from d + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4$ and 200 GeV are shown. The data indicate that in Au + Au collisions a strongly interacting state of matter is formed, that appears qualitatively different from the system formed in pp or d + Au collisions. The systematics of particle production in d + Au and Au + Au collisions exhibit remarkably simple scaling rules, including an apparent factorization of the energy and centrality dependence over a wide range of collision energies.

PHOBOS measurements of elliptic flow are presented as a function of pseudorapidity, centrality, transverse momentum, energy and nuclear species. The elliptic flow in Cu-Cu is surprisingly large, particularly for the most central events. After scaling out the geometry through the use of an alternative form of eccentricity, called the participant eccentricity, which accounts for nucleon position fluctuations in the colliding nuclei, the relative magnitude of the elliptic flow in the Cu-Cu system is qualitatively similar to that measured in the Au-Au system., Comment: Presented at the 18th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions in Budapest, Hungary, Aug. 4-9, 2005

Elliptic flow and Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} =$ 130 and 200 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at RHIC. The systematic dependencies of the flow signal on the transverse momentum, pseudorapidity, and centrality of the collision, as well as the beam energy are shown. In addition, results of a 3-dimensional analysis of two-pion correlations in the 200 GeV data are presented., 4 pages, 4 figures, contributed to the Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Ultrarelativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, Nantes, France, July 18-24, 2002

Within the Tsallis thermodynamics' framework, and using scaling properties of the entropy, we derive a generalization of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The analysis suggests a transformation of variables that allows standard thermodynamics to be recovered. Moreover, we also generalize Einstein's formula for the probability of a fluctuation to occur by means of the maximum statistical entropy method. The use of the proposed transformation of variables also shows that fluctuations within Tsallis statistics can be mapped to those of standard statistical mechanics., Comment: 4 pages, no figures, revised version, new title, accepted in PRL

PHOBOS is one of four experiments studying Au-Au collisions at RHIC. During the first running period RHIC provided Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 56 GeV and 130 GeV. The data collected during this period allowed us to study the energy and centrality dependence of particle production, the anisotropy of the final state azimuthal distribution and particle ratios at mid-rapidity., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, LaTex, to be published in the Proceedings of XXXVIth Rencontre de Moriond, QCD and High Energy Hadronic Interactions, March 2001

This document describes the conceptual design for the Offline Software and Computing for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The goals of the experiment include 1) studying neutrino oscillations using a beam of neutrinos sent from Fermilab in Illinois to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, 2) studying astrophysical neutrino sources and rare processes and 3) understanding the physics of neutrino interactions in matter. We describe the development of the computing infrastructure needed to achieve the physics goals of the experiment by storing, cataloging, reconstructing, simulating, and analyzing $\sim$ 30 PB of data/year from DUNE and its prototypes. Rather than prescribing particular algorithms, our goal is to provide resources that are flexible and accessible enough to support creative software solutions and advanced algorithms as HEP computing evolves. We describe the physics objectives, organization, use cases, and proposed technical solutions., Comment: 229 pages, 67 figures

With the discovery of non-zero value of $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. A strong European contribution to these efforts is possible., Comment: Document submitted to the European Strategy For European Particle Physics
