A polycrystalline iridate Li8IrO6 material was prepared via heating Li2O and IrO2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li8IrO6 adopts the nonpolar space group R3 with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO6 and LiO6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c-axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li8IrO6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Neel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment μeff (Ir) = 1.73 μB and insulating character indicate that Li8IrO6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

Ni-rich NMC is an attractive Li-ion battery cathode due to its combination of energy density, thermal stability, and reversibility. While higher delivered energy density can be achieved with a more positive charge voltage limit, this approach compromises sustained reversibility. Improved understanding of the local and bulk structural transformations as a function of charge voltage, and their associated impacts on capacity fade are critically needed. Through simultaneous operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of cells cycled at 3-4.3 or 3-4.7 V, this study presents an in-depth investigation into the effects of voltage window on local coordination, bulk structure, and oxidation state. These measurements are complemented by ex situ X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping and scanning electrochemical microscopy mapping (SECM) of the negative electrode, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the positive electrode, and cell level electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Initially, cycling between 3 and 4.7 V leads to greater delivered capacity due to greater lithium extraction, accompanied by increased structural distortion, moderately higher Ni oxidation, and substantially higher Co oxidation. Continued cycling at this high voltage results in suppressed Ni and Co redox, greater structural distortion, increased levels of transition metal dissolution, higher cell impedance, and 3× greater capacity fade.

Engineering surface defects on metal oxide supports could help promote the dispersion of active sites and catalytic performance of supported catalysts. Herein, a strategy of ZrO2 doping was proposed to create rich surface defects on CeO2 (CZO) and, with these defects, to improve Pt dispersion and enhance its affinity as single sites to the CZO support (Pt/CZO). The strongly anchored Pt single sites on CZO support were initially not efficient for catalytic oxidation of CO/C3H6. However, after a simple activation by H2 reduction, the catalytic oxidation performance over Pt/CZO catalyst was significantly boosted and better than Pt/CeO2. Pt/CZO catalyst also exhibited much higher thermal stability. The structural evolution of Pt active sites by H2 treatment was systematically investigated on aged Pt/CZO and Pt/CeO2 catalysts. With H2 reduction, ionic Pt single sites were transformed into active Pt clusters. Much smaller Pt clusters were created on CZO (ca. 1.2 nm) than on CeO2 (ca. 1.8 nm) due to stronger Pt-CeO2 interaction on aged Pt/CZO. Consequently, more exposed active Pt sites were obtained on the smaller clusters surrounded by more oxygen defects and Ce3+ species, which directly translated to the higher catalytic oxidation performance of activated Pt/CZO catalyst in vehicle emission control applications.

Precious metal catalysts with superior low-temperature activity and excellent thermal stability are highly needed in environmental catalysis field. In this work, a novel two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method was developed for the fabrication of a unique and highly stable CeO2/Al2O3 support (CA-T). Pd anchored on CA-T exhibited a much higher low-temperature catalytic activity and superior thermal stability in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) oxidations, compared to Pd anchored on conventional CeO2/Al2O3 (CA), which was prepared by a one-step IWI method. After aging treatment at 800 °C, the CO oxidation rate on Pd/CA-T (1.69 mmol/(gPd s)) at 120 °C was 4.1 and 84.5 times of those on Pd/CA (0.41 mmol/(gPd s)) and Pd/Al2O3 (0.02 mmol/(gPd s)), respectively. It was revealed that the CA-T support with well-controlled small CeO2 particles (ca. 12 nm) possessed abundant defects for Pd anchoring, which created rich Pd-CeO2 interfaces with strengthened interaction between Pd and CeO2 where oxygen could be efficiently activated. This resulted in the significantly improved oxidation activity and thermal stability of Pd/CA-T catalysts. The T-IWI method developed herein can be applied as a universal approach to prepare highly stable metal oxide-alumina-based supports, which have broad application in environmental catalyst design, especially for automobile exhaust aftertreatment.

High-nickel cathodes attract immense interest for use in lithium-ion batteries, to boost Li-storage capacity while reducing cost. For overcoming the intergranular-cracking issue in polycrystals, single-crystals are considered an appealing alternative, but aggravating concerns on compromising the electrochemical kinetics of electrodes. We report here a quantitative assessment of electrochemical reaction in single-crystal LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.8O2 using operando hard X-ray microscopy/spectroscopy, revealing a strong dependence of redox kinetics on the state of charge (SOC) - being sluggish at low SOC while increasing rapidly as SOC increases both in the bulk electrode and individual particles. The observation is corroborated by transport measurements and finite-element simulation, indicating that the sluggish kinetics in single-crystals is governed by ionic transport at low SOC and may be alleviated through synergistic interaction with polycrystals integrated into a same electrode. With the elucidated mechanistic origin and alleviation solution of kinetic limitations in single-crystal high-Ni cathodes, this work constitutes a step forward in enabling their practical deployment.

In developing electrode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries, significant efforts have been given to the energy, power density and cycling stability, with much less (if any) attention paid to the energy efficiency – arguably, the most important practical measure for large-scale applications. This is particularly true for the oxygen-redox active electrodes, such as Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2, the notorious energy-inefficient cathode that has an extremely high capacity but comes with large voltage hysteresis and voltage decay. Herein, we report the rational design of an energy-efficient Li-rich layered cathode along with high energy, power density and cycling stability enabled by tuning oxygen redox activity. Specifically, the target material Li1.12Ni0.22Co0.13Mn0.52O2 exhibits an ultrahigh energy efficiency at 1 C (90.6%), high capacity (> 200 mAh g−1) with 98.9% retention and less than 150 mV decay at the extended 200 cycles. Through direct comparison between the material and Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2, we show that the compositional change, although slightly, greatly improves the oxygen redox kinetics and reversibility, thereby boosts energy efficiency. The findings offer a strategy to narrow the gap between scientific interest and practical application of oxygen-redox chemistry.

Regardless of the prevailing capacity and energy density of lithium, manganese-rich layered oxide (LMR-NMC) cathodes, continuous decay of voltage and overall energy density during cycling hinders this material from commercialization in Li-ion batteries. Although significant work focuses on single doping of Na and F, analysis in portraying the benefit of these ions in diminishing the structural distortion during activation cycle is in doubt. Herein, the effects of co-doping Na and F into the LMR-NMC structure in stabilizing the structure and mitigating oxygen loss during the first cycle are closely examined via in situ x-ray measurements. Na and F co-doping shows a 30% lower degree of Li+/Ni2+ mixing in the Li layer (C2/m structure), 50% reduced Debye-Waller factor of Mn-O bonding, increase reversible TM migration, and faster Li diffusion relative to the pristine material. Due to the utilization of Ni redox chemistry below 4.4 V, less oxygen redox is required for charge compensation at high voltage. This study offers the first instance to quantitatively evaluate the effects of co-doping Na and F in LMR-NMC cathode in order to minimize voltage degradation by altering the local ordering of O3-type structure, which may rationalize strategies to overcome the issues of the material.

A polycrystalline iridate Li

A grand challenge in electrochemistry is to understand and promote electrochemical processes by exploring and exploiting the interface. Herein, we promoted the hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) of platinum in base by employing N-methylimidazoles to reorientate interfacial water against the interfacial electric field as evidenced by in situ spectroscopic characterization of the interface. We accordingly established a unified mechanism by which the HER/HOR in acid and base proceeds via diffusion of proton and hydroxide, respectively, through interface via interfacial water by the Grotthuss mechanism. This mechanism accounts for the pH-dependent HER/HOR kinetics of platinum, a long-standing puzzle. Furthermore, we demonstrated 40% performance improvement of an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer by adding 1,2-dimethylimidazole into the alkaline solution fed into its Pt cathode.

Room-temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted extensive interest in large-scale energy storage applications for renewable energy and smart grid, owing to abundant sodium resources and low cost. O3-layered sodium transition metal oxides (i.e., NaMO2, M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, etc.) are considered as a promising class of cathode materials for SIBs due to their high capacity and ease of synthesis. In this work, a quaternary layered material O3–NaCr1/4Fe1/4Ni1/4Ti1/4O2 (O3-NCFNT) is successfully synthesized and investigated as a new cathode material for SIBs. Within the voltage range of 1.5–4.1 V, O3-NCFNT delivers an ultrahigh charge capacity of 213 mA h g−1 but a limited discharge capacity of 107 mA h g−1 in the initial cycle. Ex situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy results reveal that an irreversible phase transformation as well as the irreversible redox of Cr3+/Cr6+ within the voltage range of 1.5–4.1 V should be responsible for the capacity decay in the initial cycle. While, O3-NCFNT exhibits the initial charge/discharge capacities of 135.4 and 129.2 mA h g−1 with a high coulombic efficiency of 95.4% as well as good cyclic performance within the voltage range of 1.5–3.4 V at current rate of 0.1C. Especially, O3-NCFNT shows a capacity retention of 77.1% after 300 cycles at a high rate of 1C, indicating that the structural origins of capacity decay caused by excessive sodium extraction are confirmed by XRD and XAS measurements to unlock the potential of this material for sodium-ion battery application.

Predicted polymorph manipulation offers a cutting-edge route to design function-oriented materials in an exotic double perovskite-related oxide A2BB′O6 with small A-site cations. Herein, first-principles density functional theory calculations in light of the equation of state for solid, for the first time, was used to predict the Mg3TeO6 (R)-to-perovskite (P21/n) type phase transition in Mn3TeO6 at around 5 GPa, regardless of the deployment of magnetic interactions. The high-pressure synthesis and synchrotron diffraction crystal structure analysis corroborated experimentally the polymorph variation in Mn22+Mn2+Te6+O6, which was accompanied by a 13 K increase in the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (37 K) in the high-pressure perovskite polymorph compared to that of the ambient-pressure R phase (24 K). The magnetodielectric coupling remains up to 50 K with the maximum being around the magnetic ordering temperature in the perovskite Mn3TeO6. Thus, the predicted polymorph manipulation here offers the possibility of discovering accelerated materials by inverse design in exotic perovskite oxides.

Pt-CeO2 catalysts have been widely studied for the vehicle emission control. Designing novel CeO2 based supports with improved physical-chemical properties has become a research hotspot to further promote the catalytic performance and stability of Pt-CeO2 catalysts. In this work, through utilizing a unique, two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method for ceria-zirconia-alumina (CZA-T) support preparation, a Pt single site catalyst (Pt/CZA-T) with excellent thermal stability was synthesized. Higher oxidation activity and Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) were achieved on activated Pt/CZA-T, comparing to Pt catalysts on regular CeO2/Al2O3 (Pt/CA) and one-step prepared CeZrOx/Al2O3 (Pt/CZA). Via the modification of hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of γ-Al2O3 by this unique T-IWI method, finer Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 particles with higher density of surface defects were formed on CZA-T, on which a higher Pt dispersion and stronger Pt-O-Ce interaction were achieved. Upon activation, smaller, well-dispersed Pt clusters on CZA-T were generated. It was concluded that the CO oxidation performance and OSC were highly related to the size of Pt clusters on different supports that we have developed. More Pt sites located at Pt cluster-CeZrOx interfaces, which were the real active sites, were responsible for the highest OSC function and CO oxidation activity of activated Pt/CZA-T catalyst.

Zero-strain electrodes, such as spinel lithium titanate (Li4/3Ti5/3O4), are appealing for application in batteries due to their negligible volume change and extraordinary stability upon repeated charge/discharge cycles. On the other hand, this same property makes it challenging to probe their structural changes during the electrochemical reaction. Herein, we report in situ studies of lithiation-driven structural transformations in Li4/3Ti5/3O4 via a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Based on excellent agreement between computational and experimental spectra of Ti K-edge, we identified key spectral features as fingerprints for quantitative assessment of structural evolution at different length scales. Li2Ru0.5Mn0.5O3, a high capacity lithium-rich layered cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, was subject to comprehensive diagnostic studies, including in situ/ex situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), pair distribution function, and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, to understand the correlations between transition-metal chemistry, structure, and lithium storage electrochemical behavior. Ru–Ru dimers were identified in the as-prepared sample and found to be preserved upon prolonged cycling. Presence of these dimers, which are likely caused by the delocalized nature of 4d electrons, is found to favor the stabilization of the structure in a layered phase. The in situ XAS results confirm the participation of oxygen redox into the charge compensation at high charge voltage, and the great flexibility of the covalent bond between Ru and O may provide great reversibility of the global structure despite the significant local distortion around Ru. Rational design of technologically important exotic perovskites is hampered by the insufficient geometrical descriptors and costly and extremely high-pressure synthesis, while the big-data driven compositional identification and precise prediction entangles full understanding of the possible polymorphs and complicated multidimensional calculations of the chemical and thermodynamic parameter space. Here we present a rapid systematic data-mining-driven approach to design exotic perovskites in a high-throughput and discovery speed of the A(2)BB'O-6 family as exemplified in A(3)TeO(6). The magnetoelectric polar magnet Co3TeO6, which is theoretically recognized and experimentally realized at 5 GPa from the six possible polymorphs, undergoes two magnetic transitions at 24 and 58 K and exhibits helical spin structure accompanied by magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling. The phase transition, charge compensation, and local chemical environment of Ni in LiNiO2 were investigated to understand the degradation mechanism. The electrode was subjected to a variety of bulk and surface-sensitive characterization techniques under different charge–discharge cycling conditions. We observed the phase transition from the original hexagonal H1 phase to another two hexagonal phases (H2 and H3) upon Li deintercalation. Moreover, the gradual loss of H3-phase features was revealed during the repeated charges. The reduction in Ni redox activity occurred at both the charge and the discharge states, and it appeared both in the bulk and at the surface over the extended cycles. The degradation of crystal structure significantly contributes to the reduction of Ni redox activity, which in turn causes the cycling performance decay of LiNiO2.

Mn2CoReO6, the fourth known magnetic transition-metal-only double perovskite oxide (space group P21/n) was synthesized at high pressure and temperature (8 GPa, 1350 ?C). Large structural distortions are induced by the small A-site Mn2+ cations. Mn2CoReO6 exhibits complex magnetic properties with a robust antiferromagentic order (TN = 94 K) involving all the cation sublattices .

NiTiO 3 and CoTiO 3 ilmenites (space group ) form a homogeneous mixture with remarkably low crystal symmetry. According to neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements, the room-temperature space group symmetry of the Ni 0.6 Co 0.4 TiO 3 sample is triclinic . This structural distortion is the first known case in ilmenites and opens up ways to modify functional properties of magnetic oxides. The origin of the distortion is discussed. Transitions from a paramagnetic to a weak ferromagnetic and further to a ferrimagnetic phase occur at 69 and 25 K, respectively. The ferromagnetic phase is characteristic of the solid-solution and is not found in the constituents.

Recent advances in rechargeable Zn/MnO2 alkaline batteries have shown promise for scalable energy storage systems which provide a safe, low-cost alternative with a demonstrated lifetime over thousands of cycles. This cathode technology is based on a 2-electron Mn redox process where a layered birnessite-type phase has been shown to form after the first cycle with excellent reversibility between the discharge product, Mn(OH)2. Herein, we investigate the reversible reaction between birnessite and Mn(OH)2 with and without a Bi2O3 additive using multimodal structural characterization techniques during active battery cycling. Diffraction results provide evidence of Bi3+ residing in the interlayer of birnessite which prevents irreversible Mn3O4 formation by limiting Mn3+ diffusion within the crystal lattice. Also, upon charge no MnOOH intermediate phases are observed. Instead, X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy indicate a disordered, non-crystalline birnessite-type phase consisting of mostly neutral H2O within the interlayer. Birnessite phases will reform without Bi2O3 present, but Mn3O4 formation severely polarizes the potential they are formed at, leading to capacity fade. Also, we discuss the reversible Bi2O3 conversion to Bi0 and its contribution to the observed capacity. We expect the results will provide crucial insight into the development of aqueous, rechargeable battery systems utilizing MnO2.

The development of catalysts with high thermal stability is receiving considerable attention. Here, we report manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) materials with remarkably high thermal stability, synthesized by a simple one-pot synthesis in a neutral medium. The high thermal stability was confirmed by the retention of the cryptomelane phase at 750 °C in air. Mechanistic studies were performed by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) to monitor the change in oxidation state and the phase evolution during the thermal transformation. These two techniques revealed the intermediate phases formed during the nucleation and growth of highly crystalline cryptomelane manganese oxide. The thermal stability of charged cathode materials is one of the critical properties affecting the safety characteristics of lithium-ion batteries. New findings on the thermal-stability and thermal-decomposition pathways related to the oxygen release are discovered for the high-voltage spinel LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) with ordered (o-) and disordered (d-) structures at the fully delithiated (charged) state using a combination of in situ time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TR-XRD) coupled with mass spectroscopy (MS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) during heating. Both o- and d- LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4, at their fully charged states, start oxygen-releasing structural changes at temperatures below 300 °C, which is in sharp contrast to the good thermal stability of the 4V-spinel LixMn2O4 with no oxygen being released up to 375 °C. A novel characterization technique using the combination of chemical sodiation and synchrotron based in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been detailed illustrated. The power of this novel technique was demonstrated in elucidating the structure evolution of Li4Ti5O12 upon sodium insertion. The sodium insertion behavior into Li4Ti5O12 is strongly size dependent. A solid solution reaction behavior in a wide range has been revealed during sodium insertion into the nanosized Li4Ti5O12 (~44 nm), which is quite different from the well-known two-phase reaction of Li4Ti5O12/Li7Ti5O12 system during lithium insertion, and also has not been fully addressed in the literature so far. On the basis of this in situ experiment, the apparent Na(+) ion diffusion coefficient (DNa+) of Li4Ti5O12 was estimated in the magnitude of 10(-16) cm(2) s(-1), close to the values estimated by electrochemical method, but 5 order of magnitudes smaller than the Li(+) ion diffusion coefficient (D(Li+) ~10(-11) cm(2) s(-1)), indicating a sluggish Na(+) ion diffusion kinetics in Li4Ti5O12 comparing with that of Li(+) ion. Nanosizing the Li4Ti5O12 will be critical to make it a suitable anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The application of this novel in situ chemical sodiation method reported in this work provides a facile way and a new opportunity for in situ structure investigations of various sodium-ion battery materials and other systems.
