A Ni–Fe based perovskite oxide catalyzes the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), coupled with changes in local composition and structure identified by virtue of an epitaxial thin film geometry.

Nanocrystalline MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ has shown promise as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solutions, but the material has been lightly studied as highly ordered thin film catalysts. To examine the role of surface termination and Mn and Fe site occupancy, epitaxial MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ spinel oxide films were grown on (001) and (111) oriented Nb:SrTiO$_{3}$ perovskite substrates using molecular beam epitaxy and studied as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). HRXRD and XPS show synthesis of pure phase materials while STEM and RHEED analysis demonstrate island-like growth of (111) surface terminated pyramids on both (001) and (111) oriented substrates, consistent with the literature and attributed to lattice mismatch between the spinel films and perovskite substrate. Cyclic voltammograms under an N$_{2}$ atmosphere revealed distinct redox features for Mn and Fe surface termination based on comparison of MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$. Under O$_{2}$ atmosphere, electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen was observed at both Mn and Fe redox features; however, diffusion limited current was only achieved at potentials consistent with Fe reduction. This result contrasts with that of nanocrystalline MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ reported in the literature where diffusion limited current is achieved with Mn-based catalysis. This difference is attributed to a low density of Mn surface termination, as determined by the integration of current from CVs collected under N$_{2}$, in addition to low conductivity through the MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ film due to the degree of inversion. The epitaxial growth of functional oxides using a substrate with a graphene layer is a highly desirable method for improving structural quality and obtaining freestanding epitaxial nanomembranes for scientific study, applications, and economical reuse of substrates. However, the aggressive oxidizing conditions typically used in growing epitaxial oxides can damage graphene. Here, we demonstrate the successful use of hybrid molecular beam epitaxy for SrTiO 3 growth that does not require an independent oxygen source, thus avoiding graphene damage. This approach produces epitaxial films with self-regulating cation stoichiometry. Furthermore, the film (46-nm-thick SrTiO 3 ) can be exfoliated and transferred to foreign substrates. These results open the door to future studies of previously unattainable freestanding oxide nanomembranes grown in an adsorption-controlled manner by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. This approach has potentially important implications for the commercial application of perovskite oxides in flexible electronics and as a dielectric in van der Waals thin-film electronics.

Rare earth nickelates including LaNiO3 are promising catalysts for water electrolysis to produce oxygen gas. Recent studies report that Fe substitution for Ni can significantly enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of LaNiO3. However, the role of Fe in increasing the activity remains ambiguous, with potential origins that are both structural and electronic in nature. On the basis of a series of epitaxial LaNi1-xFexO3 thin films synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy, we report that Fe substitution tunes the Ni oxidation state in LaNi1-xFexO3 and a volcano-like OER trend is observed, with x = 0.375 being the most active. Spectroscopy and ab initio modeling reveal that high-valent Fe3+δ cationic species strongly increase the transition-metal (TM) 3d bandwidth via Ni-O-Fe bridges and enhance TM 3d-O 2p hybridization, boosting the OER activity. These studies deepen our understanding of structural and electronic contributions that give rise to enhanced OER activity in perovskite oxides.

Understanding compositional and microstructural changes in functional intermetallic coatings is of great importance for fusion energy and nuclear materials applications. Tritium (3H) and lithium (6Li, 7Li) transport within a neutron irradiated target rod employing an aluminide-coated austenitic stainless-steel cladding was investigated using state-of-the-art multimodal imaging. Specifically, a scanning electron microscope augmented with focused ion beam (SEM-FIB) was used to prepare lift-out samples of the irradiated coating for microanalysis. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was used to acquire atomic-scale information on the coating surface microstructure, morphology, and composition. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to determine lift-out dimensions nondestructively. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) revealed the presence of carbonaceous species and unexpected lithium isotopic distributions in the irradiated tubing, suggesting light isotope mobility between internal target components during irradiation. SIMS chemical mapping of aluminide coatings at core midplane and lower core locations of the cladding shows that light isotopic (e.g., 3H, 6Li, 7Li) distributions are different in the irradiated coating. Advance correlative imaging results suggest lithium transport during the tritium production process and give new insights into the fundamental transport mechanism within the target during irradiation and non-equilibrium conditions.

Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are difficult to control in real-world environments. Here we use isotopic tracers and atom probe tomography to directly visualize oxygen diffusion and transport pathways across perovskite and metal-perovskite heterostructures, i.e. (Ni-Cr coated) Sr-doped lanthanum ferrite (LSFO). Annealing in 18O2(g) results in elemental and isotopic redistributions through oxygen exchange (OE) in the LSFO while Ni-Cr undergoes oxidation via multiple mechanisms and transport pathways. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations at experimental conditions provide rationale for OE reaction mechanisms and reveal a complex interplay of different thermodynamic and kinetic drivers. Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to reshape scientific inquiry and enable breakthrough discoveries in areas such as energy storage, quantum computing, and biomedicine. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), a cornerstone of the study of chemical and materials systems, stands to benefit greatly from AI-driven automation. However, present barriers to low-level instrument control, as well as generalizable and interpretable feature detection, make truly automated microscopy impractical. Here, we discuss the design of a closed-loop instrument control platform guided by emerging sparse data analytics. We demonstrate how a centralized controller, informed by machine learning combining limited $a$ $priori$ knowledge and task-based discrimination, can drive on-the-fly experimental decision-making. Our present understanding of surface dissolution of nuclear fuels such as uranium dioxide (UO2) is limited by the use of non-local characterization techniques. Here we discuss the use of state-of-the-art scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to reveal atomic–scale changes occurring to a UO2 thin film subjected to anoxic dissolution in deionised water. No amorphisation of the UO2 film surface during dissolution is observed, and dissolution occurs preferentially at surface reactive sites that present as surface pits which increase in size as the dissolution proceeds. Using a combination of STEM imaging modes, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), we investigate structural defects and oxygen passivation of the surface that originates from the filling of the octahedral interstitial site in the centre of the unit cells and its associated lattice contraction. Taken together, our results reveal complex pathways for both the dissolution and infiltration of solutions into UO2 surfaces.

4d transition metal oxides have emerged as promising materials for numerous applications including high mobility electronics. SrNbO$_{3}$ is one such candidate material, serving as a good donor material in interfacial oxide systems and exhibiting high electron mobility in ultrathin films. However, its synthesis is challenging due to the metastable nature of the d$^{1}$ Nb$^{4+}$ cation and the limitations in the delivery of refractory Nb. To date, films have been grown primarily by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), but development of a means to grow and stabilize the material via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) would enable studies of interfacial phenomena and multilayer structures that may be challenging by PLD. To that end, SrNbO$_{3}$ thin films were grown using hybrid MBE for the first time using a tris(diethalamido)(tert-butylimido) niobium precursor for Nb and an elemental Sr source on GdScO$_{3}$ substrates. Varying thicknesses of insulating SrHfO$_{3}$ capping layers were deposited using a hafnium tert-butoxide precursor for Hf on top of SrNbO$_{3}$ films to preserve the metastable surface. Grown films were transferred in vacuo for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to quantify elemental composition, density of states at the Fermi energy, and Nb oxidation state. We demonstrate that the interfacial dipole associated with bonding across the $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}/\mathrm{Si}$ heterojunction can be tuned through space charge, thereby enabling the band alignment to be altered via doping. Oxygen impurities in Si act as donors that create space charge by transferring electrons across the interface into $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. The space charge induces an electric field that modifies the interfacial dipole, thereby tuning the band alignment from type II to III. The transferred charge, accompanying built-in electric fields, and change in band alignment are manifested in electrical transport and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Ab initio models reveal the interplay between polarization and band offsets. We find that band offsets can be tuned by modulating the density of space charge across the interface. Modulating the interface dipole to enable electrostatic altering of band alignment opens additional pathways to realize functional behavior in semiconducting hybrid heterojunctions.

Rare earth nickelates including LaNiO

Oxygen defects govern the behavior of a range of materials spanning catalysis, quantum computing, and nuclear energy. Understanding and controlling these defects is particularly important for the safe use, storage, and disposal of actinide oxides in the nuclear fuel cycle, since their oxidation state influences fuel lifetimes, stability, and the contamination of groundwater. However, poorly understood nanoscale fluctuations in these systems can lead to significant deviations from bulk oxidation behavior. Here we describe the use of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy to resolve changes in the local oxygen defect environment in U O 2 + x surfaces. We observe large image contrast and spectral changes that reflect the presence of sizable gradients in interstitial oxygen content at the nanoscale, which we quantify through first-principles calculations and image simulations. These findings reveal an unprecedented level of excess oxygen incorporated in a complex near-surface spatial distribution, offering additional insight into defect formation pathways and kinetics during U O 2 surface oxidation.

The design of monolithic U Mo fuel elements fabricated from low-enriched uranium for use in high-power research reactors requires bonding of the fuel foil to either Al cladding or a Zr barrier layer. Processing of the U Mo ingot to final foil form has the potential to generate surface layers on the foil that differ from the bulk, metallic U Mo. The interfacial properties between the U Mo and Zr or Al cladding layers will then be determined by these surface layers. We use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy to characterize the composition, oxidation state, and morphology of the surface layers that form after hot rolling and cold rolling depleted U–10 wt% Mo alloy (DU10Mo). A thick uranium nitride layer is observed after hot rolling, although its origin is likely from a previous processing step. The efficacy of acid etching in HNO3 is compared to that of electropolishing in H2SO4 to remove surface nitride and oxide layers, and both methods are found to be similarly effective. Both laboratory (low humidity) air exposure and longer rinse times in water are shown to promote the formation of surface oxide layers. Exposure of both acid-etched and electropolished DU10Mo foils to humid air (97% relative humidity) for six weeks results in formation of a thick oxide layer due to corrosion. The oxide layer on the acid-etched foil is thicker and more highly oxidized than the oxide layer that forms on the electropolished foil, and these differences in oxidation behavior are attributed to higher surface roughness on the acid-etched foil. In general, Mo is found to play a role as a sacrificial element, typically exhibiting a larger ratio of Mo6+/Mo4+ than U6+/U4+. This is unexpected, given the greater thermodynamic driving force to form U oxides than Mo oxides.

Mastery of order-disorder processes in highly non-equilibrium nanostructured oxides has significant implications for the development of emerging energy technologies. However, we are presently limited in our ability to quantify and harness these processes at high spatial, chemical, and temporal resolution, particularly in extreme environments. Here we describe the percolation of disorder at the model oxide interface LaMnO$_3$ / SrTiO$_3$, which we visualize during in situ ion irradiation in the transmission electron microscope. We observe the formation of a network of disorder during the initial stages of ion irradiation and track the global progression of the system to full disorder. We couple these measurements with detailed structural and chemical probes, examining possible underlying defect mechanisms responsible for this unique percolative behavior., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures

Recent investigations on spinel CoMn

Co-deposition of carbon atoms with hydrogen isotopes and hydrogenated carbon radicals and molecules is recognized as the main mechanism for tritium retention in the graphite walls of the previous tokamak fusion devices. Significant tritium retention would be a serious concern for safe and economic long-term operation of future fusion test reactors and fusion energy systems. Similar deposits are observed on the surface of the engineered components in a tritium-producing assembly, known as a Tritium-Producing Burnable Absorber Rod (TPBAR). Characterization of the deposits can help understand the tritium transport, accumulation history and distribution in TPBARs. This study reports our recent results from the carbonaceous deposits formed on an aluminide-coated cladding in the lower plenum of a TPBAR following thermal neutron irradiation. The observed deposits are amorphous in nature, consisting of flakes of interconnected nanoscale features. They contain primarily double-bonded carbon (e.g., alkene) and carbonyl carbon, as well as a minor fraction of aliphatic carbon, all of which are likely tritiated. A similar co-deposition process that occurred in previous fusion devices is responsible for the formation and growth of the carbonaceous deposits.

Order-disorder processes fundamentally determine the structure and properties of many important oxide systems for energy and computing applications. While these processes have been intensively studied in bulk materials, they are less investigated and understood for nanostructured oxides in highly non-equilibrium conditions. These systems can now be realized through a range of deposition techniques and probed at exceptional spatial and chemical resolution, leading to a greater focus on interface dynamics. Here we survey a selection of recent studies of order-disorder behavior at thin film oxide interfaces, with a particular emphasis on the emergence of order during synthesis and disorder in extreme irradiation environments.
