1. A Study of the Results of a Program of Continuing Education for Protestant Clergy.

Abstract: Data on the program of The Institute for Advanced Pastoral Studies were gathered through content analysis of 100 unsolicited letters from conferees, analysis of before and after questionnaires used with a conference and a control groups and given to four spring conferences in 1964, and analysis of the Theological Studies Inventory used before the 1964 spring conference and four months later. It was concluded that temporary changes in role perception and behavior as a result of conference attendance may enable a minister to change in his relationship with laymen from a prima donna or laisez-faire style of leadership to one of "coach-player," changes varying somewhat with age and greatly with denomination. An orientation course can guide the conferee to learn certain principles and sensitize him to his mistakes in preaching, group counseling, or administration, but for lasting learning, additional training and work with laymen outside the church are needed. Parish ministers do a great deal of attitudinal and perceptual learning in a short, intensive experience, but there is need for follow up conferences six months to a year later. 2. Integrating Biological Data into Autonomous Remote Sensing Systems for In Situ Imageomics: A Case Study for Kenyan Animal Behavior Sensing with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Abstract: In situ imageomics leverages machine learning techniques to infer biological traits from images collected in the field, or in situ, to study individuals organisms, groups of wildlife, and whole ecosystems. Such datasets provide real-time social and environmental context to inferred biological traits, which can enable new, data-driven conservation and ecosystem management. The development of machine learning techniques to extract biological traits from images are impeded by the volume and quality data required to train these models. Autonomous, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are well suited to collect in situ imageomics data as they can traverse remote terrain quickly to collect large volumes of data with greater consistency and reliability compared to manually piloted UAV missions. However, little guidance exists on optimizing autonomous UAV missions for the purposes of remote sensing for conservation and biodiversity monitoring. The UAV video dataset curated by KABR: In-Situ Dataset for Kenyan Animal Behavior Recognition from Drone Videos required three weeks to collect, a time-consuming and expensive endeavor. Our analysis of KABR revealed that a third of the videos gathered were unusable for the purposes of inferring wildlife behavior. We analyzed the flight telemetry data from portions of UAV videos that were usable for inferring wildlife behavior, and demonstrate how these insights can be integrated into an autonomous remote sensing system to track wildlife in real time. Our autonomous remote sensing system optimizes the UAV's actions to increase the yield of usable data, and matches the flight path of an expert pilot with an 87% accuracy rate, representing an 18.2% improvement in accuracy over previously proposed methods.

3. Developing and Sustaining a Graphic Scholarship Collection for Academic Libraries

Abstract: In early 2021, the Schusterman Library at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa satellite campus took a new step towards building a culture of interest by creating the Graphic Scholarship Collection. This new endeavor is a curated collection of graphic novels, primarily non-fiction, aligned with the academic programs on campus, as well as promoting University initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion. A new organizational structure for the collection materials and their circulation metrics will be examined in detail. There will also be consideration of the challenges of selection and acquisition by a mixed team of selectors, some of whom have no experience with graphic novels and who have to resolve contradictions between the new and existing library collections. New graphic scholarship initiatives and faculty-library partnerships will be explored. In addition to developing workshops and other learning activities around the collection, the library is partnering with campus faculty in creating original course content. The collection's development has already had an impact by building and strengthening bonds across the campus, and it aims to mirror the growth of the University community.

4. Design YOU! Code Camp: Lessons Learned for Engaging Underserved Youth

Abstract: DesignYOU! Code Camp is a grant-funded summer outreach camp designed to increase interest in coding and STEM careers among middle school students (6th - 8th graders) through an innovative, immersive summer camp experience. To make the concepts of coding more palpable, researchers incorporated fashion and retail allowing students to learn through practical applications of the concepts taught. This paper outlines the planning, logistics, and lessons learned from the second iteration of the DesignYOU! Code Camp. Overall, both parents and students expressed satisfaction with the camp while student interest in coding increased. Successes and challenges from implementing the DesignYOU! Code Camp are discussed.

5. Lines of Flight: The Digital Fragmenting of Educational Networks

Abstract: With the precipitous changes of the platform formerly known as Twitter, brought on by the change of ownership in late 2022, many networked educators sought, and continue to seek, new digital spaces to continue fostering and developing their digital practice. The authors of this article had all been actively networked on Twitter, and wanted to explore these changes in their professional worlds. As we sought out these spaces we critically began to interrogate our own practices on this platform to gain a deeper understanding of our practice going forward. We've approached this exploration through three vectors: an examination of the terms we use to describe movement from platform to platform, digital identity formation and disruption, and building human connection in digital spaces. The findings from our exploration yielded the following conclusions: (1) With regard to metaphors of movement (i.e., "migration") we leave space open as to which metaphor to use as no metaphor is a perfect fit to explain the complexity of this phenomenon. (2) Digital identity/ies are multifaceted and sometimes place-specific, but some networked affordances seemed to encourage an ever-evolving digital identity more than other spaces. (3) Finally, digital spaces afford us the ability to carve out our own communities from the wider academic community, in the process developing a more owned and voiced identity. However as social media platforms are fleeting, those connections -- and identities -- are in danger of getting co-opted or deleted as platforms rise and fall.

6. Educators' Understandings of Digital Classroom Tools and Datafication: Perceptions from Higher Education Faculty

Abstract: Research has shown that critical data literacies development for educators is seldom a core component of most campus conversations about datafication, even as extractive, datafied systems become pervasive throughout the higher education sector. This article outlines findings from an international, qualitative, Comparative Case Study (CCS) of university professionals teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic. It overviews beliefs and barriers shaping educators' responses to datafication and focuses specifically on their perceptions of faculty development opportunities related to digital classroom tools and to datafication more broadly. The article presents insights into how faculty understands higher education's contemporary datafied infrastructure and highlights participants' voices about faculty professional development and critical data literacies. Based on our findings, we recommend formal faculty development and broader professional learning conversations as a means of enhancing faculty awareness and agency within the higher education sector.

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

8. Nonlocal Attention Operator: Materializing Hidden Knowledge Towards Interpretable Physics Discovery

Abstract: Despite the recent popularity of attention-based neural architectures in core AI fields like natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV), their potential in modeling complex physical systems remains under-explored. Learning problems in physical systems are often characterized as discovering operators that map between function spaces based on a few instances of function pairs. This task frequently presents a severely ill-posed PDE inverse problem. In this work, we propose a novel neural operator architecture based on the attention mechanism, which we coin Nonlocal Attention Operator (NAO), and explore its capability towards developing a foundation physical model. In particular, we show that the attention mechanism is equivalent to a double integral operator that enables nonlocal interactions among spatial tokens, with a data-dependent kernel characterizing the inverse mapping from data to the hidden parameter field of the underlying operator. As such, the attention mechanism extracts global prior information from training data generated by multiple systems, and suggests the exploratory space in the form of a nonlinear kernel map. Consequently, NAO can address ill-posedness and rank deficiency in inverse PDE problems by encoding regularization and achieving generalizability. We empirically demonstrate the advantages of NAO over baseline neural models in terms of generalizability to unseen data resolutions and system states. Our work not only suggests a novel neural operator architecture for learning interpretable foundation models of physical systems, but also offers a new perspective towards understanding the attention mechanism.

Abstract: The superconducting and structural properties of elemental strontium metal were investigated under pressures up to 60 GPa while maintaining cryogenic conditions during pressure application. Applying pressure at low temperatures reveals differences in superconducting and structural phases compared to previous reports obtained at room temperatures. Notably, the superconducting critical temperature exhibits a twofold increase under compression after cryogenic cooling within the pressure range of 35-42 GPa, compared to cryogenic cooling after room-temperature compression. Subsequently, the transition width becomes significantly sharper above 42 GPa. Low-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements under pressure reveal that this change corresponds to the Sr-III to Sr-IV transition, with no evidence of any metastable structure. Furthermore, the monoclinic Sr-IV structure was observed to remain stable to much higher pressures - at least up to 60 GPa, without the appearance of the incommensurate Sr-V phase present at room temperature. 10. Parity Violating Marginal Deformation of the 3D Gross-Neveu-Thirring Model

Abstract: A hybrid of the critical three dimensional Gross-Neveu and Thirring models deformed by explicit parity breaking operators is studied in the large N expansion and using the renormalization group. Two stable solutions are found. One solution is a stable charge-gapped phase with a massless photon-like vector field, massive fermions and a parametrically light scalar field which acts as a dilaton for a spontaneously broken approximate scale invariance. A second solution is a conformal window where the fermion spectrum is not gapped and the theory flows between infrared and ultraviolet fixed points, becoming a conformal field theory at the infrared fixed point. The latter is an analog of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point and it supports a novel parity and time reversal violating three dimensional conformal field theory with scalar, spinor and vector fields.

11. Quantum Machine Learning: Performance and Security Implications in Real-World Applications

Abstract: Quantum computing has garnered significant attention in recent years from both academia and industry due to its potential to achieve a "quantum advantage" over classical computers. The advent of quantum computing introduces new challenges for security and privacy. This poster explores the performance and security implications of quantum computing through a case study of machine learning in a real-world application. We compare the performance of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms to their classical counterparts using the Alzheimer's disease dataset. Our results indicate that QML algorithms show promising potential while they still have not surpassed classical algorithms in terms of learning capability and convergence difficulty, and running quantum algorithms through simulations on classical computers requires significantly large memory space and CPU time. Our study also indicates that QMLs have inherited vulnerabilities from classical machine learning algorithms while also introduce new attack vectors.

12. Asymptotics for the cubic 1D NLS with a slowly decaying potential

Abstract: We consider the asymptotics of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with an external potential $V$ that does not admit bound states. Assuming that $\langle x\rangle^{2+}V(x) \in L^1$ and that $u$ is orthogonal to any zero-energy resonances, we show that solutions exhibit modified scattering behavior. Our decay assumptions are weaker than those appearing in previous work and are likely nearly optimal for exceptional potentials, since the M\o{}ller wave operators are not known to be bounded on $L^p$ spaces unless $\langle x\rangle^2V \in L^1$. Our method combines two techniques: First, we prove a new class of linear estimates, which allow us to relate weights associated with the equation with potential to weights associated with the flat equation, up to localized error terms. By using the improved local decay coming from the zero-energy assumption, we can treat these errors perturbatively, allowing us to treat the weighted estimates using the same vector field arguments as in the flat case. Second, we derive the asymptotic profile using the wave packet testing method introduced by Ifrim and Tataru. Again, by taking advantage of improved local decay near the origin, we are able to treat the potential as a lower-order perturbation, allowing us to use tools developed to study the flat problem., Comment: 34 pages, comments welcome!

13. Cross-cultural analysis of pedestrian group behaviour influence on crossing decisions in interactions with autonomous vehicles

Abstract: Understanding cultural backgrounds is crucial for the seamless integration of autonomous driving into daily life as it ensures that systems are attuned to diverse societal norms and behaviours, enhancing acceptance and safety in varied cultural contexts. In this work, we investigate the impact of co-located pedestrians on crossing behaviour, considering cultural and situational factors. To accomplish this, a full-scale virtual reality (VR) environment was created in the CARLA simulator, enabling the identical experiment to be replicated in both Spain and Australia. Participants (N=30) attempted to cross the road at an urban crosswalk alongside other pedestrians exhibiting conservative to more daring behaviours, while an autonomous vehicle (AV) approached with different driving styles. For the analysis of interactions, we utilized questionnaires and direct measures of the moment when participants entered the lane. Our findings indicate that pedestrians tend to cross the same traffic gap together, even though reckless behaviour by the group reduces confidence and makes the situation perceived as more complex. Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Abstract: A central problem in biology is to understand how organisms evolve and adapt to their environment by acquiring variations in the observable characteristics or traits of species across the tree of life. With the growing availability of large-scale image repositories in biology and recent advances in generative modeling, there is an opportunity to accelerate the discovery of evolutionary traits automatically from images. Toward this goal, we introduce Phylo-Diffusion, a novel framework for conditioning diffusion models with phylogenetic knowledge represented in the form of HIERarchical Embeddings (HIER-Embeds). We also propose two new experiments for perturbing the embedding space of Phylo-Diffusion: trait masking and trait swapping, inspired by counterpart experiments of gene knockout and gene editing/swapping. Our work represents a novel methodological advance in generative modeling to structure the embedding space of diffusion models using tree-based knowledge. Our work also opens a new chapter of research in evolutionary biology by using generative models to visualize evolutionary changes directly from images. We empirically demonstrate the usefulness of Phylo-Diffusion in capturing meaningful trait variations for fishes and birds, revealing novel insights about the biological mechanisms of their evolution.

16. GPT Deciphering Fedspeak: Quantifying Dissent Among Hawks and Doves

Abstract: Markets and policymakers around the world hang on the consequential monetary policy decisions made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Publicly available textual documentation of their meetings provides insight into members' attitudes about the economy. We use GPT-4 to quantify dissent among members on the topic of inflation. We find that transcripts and minutes reflect the diversity of member views about the macroeconomic outlook in a way that is lost or omitted from the public statements. In fact, diverging opinions that shed light upon the committee's "true" attitudes are almost entirely omitted from the final statements. Hence, we argue that forecasting FOMC sentiment based solely on statements will not sufficiently reflect dissent among the hawks and doves.

Abstract: Materials composed of spin-1 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains are known to adopt complex ground states which are sensitive to the single-ion-anisotropy (SIA) energy ($D$), and intrachain ($J_{0}$) and interchain ($J'_{i}$) exchange energy scales. While theoretical and experimental studies have extended this model to include various other energy scales, the effect of the lack of a common SIA axis is not well explored. Here we investigate the magnetic properties of Ni(pyrimidine)(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$, a chain compound where the tilting of Ni octahedra leads to a 2-fold alternation of the easy-axis directions along the chain. Muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate a transition to long-range order at $T_{\text{N}}=2.3$\,K and the magnetic structure is initially determined to be antiferromagnetic and collinear using elastic neutron diffraction experiments. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were used to find $J_{0} = 5.107(7)$\,K, $D = 2.79(1)$\,K, $J'_{2}=0.18(3)$\,K and a rhombic anisotropy energy $E=0.19(9)$\,K. Mean-field modelling reveals that the ground state structure hosts spin canting of $\phi\approx6.5^{\circ}$, which is not detectable above the noise floor of the elastic neutron diffraction data. Monte-Carlo simulation of the powder-averaged magnetization, $M(H)$, is then used to confirm these Hamiltonian parameters, while single-crystal $M(H)$ simulations provide insight into features observed in the data., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Interactions of molecules with their environment influence the course and outcome of almost all chemical reactions. However, classical computers struggle to accurately simulate complicated molecule-environment interactions because of the steep growth of computational resources with both molecule size and environment complexity. Therefore, many quantum-chemical simulations are restricted to isolated molecules, whose dynamics can dramatically differ from what happens in an environment. Here, we show that analog quantum simulators can simulate open molecular systems by using the native dissipation of the simulator and injecting additional controllable dissipation. By exploiting the native dissipation to simulate the molecular dissipation -- rather than seeing it as a limitation -- our approach enables longer simulations of open systems than are possible for closed systems. In particular, we show that trapped-ion simulators using a mixed qudit-boson (MQB) encoding could simulate molecules in a wide range of condensed phases by implementing widely used dissipative processes within the Lindblad formalism, including pure dephasing and both electronic and vibrational relaxation. The MQB open-system simulations require significantly fewer additional quantum resources compared to both classical and digital quantum approaches.

Abstract: The SKA Observatory, currently in the construction phase, will have two of the world's largest radio telescopes when completed in 2028. The scale of the project introduces unique challenges for the telescope software design and implementation at all levels, from user interfacing software down to the lower-level control of individual telescope elements. The Observation Execution Tool (OET) is part of the Observation Science Operations (OSO) suite of applications and is responsible for orchestrating the highest level of telescope control through the execution of telescope control scripts. One of the main challenges for the OET is creating a design that can robustly run concurrent observations on multiple subarrays while remaining responsive to the user. The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) development process followed by the SKA project also means the software should be allow to iterative implementation and easily accommodate new and changing requirements. Abstract: The Observatory Science Operations (OSO) subsystem of the SKAO consists of a range of complex tools which will be used to propose, design, schedule and execute observations. Bridging the gap between the science and telescope domains is the key responsibility of OSO, requiring considerations of usability, performance, availability and accessibility, amongst others. This paper describes the state of the observatory software as we approach construction milestones, how the applications meet these requirements using a modern technology architecture, and challenges so far.

Abstract: This paper reports on a measurement of electron-ion recombination in liquid argon in the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). A clear dependence of recombination on the angle of the ionizing particle track relative to the drift electric field is observed. An ellipsoid modified box (EMB) model of recombination describes the data across all measured angles. These measurements are used for the calorimetric energy scale calibration of the ICARUS TPC, which is also presented. The impact of the EMB model is studied on calorimetric particle identification, as well as muon and proton energy measurements. Accounting for the angular dependence in EMB recombination improves the accuracy and precision of these measurements.

Abstract: The ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector has been taking physics data since 2022 as part of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. This paper details the equalization of the response to charge in the ICARUS time projection chamber (TPC), as well as data-driven tuning of the simulation of ionization charge signals and electronics noise. The equalization procedure removes non-uniformities in the ICARUS TPC response to charge in space and time. This work leverages the copious number of cosmic ray muons available to ICARUS at the surface. The ionization signal shape simulation applies a novel procedure that tunes the simulation to match what is measured in data. The end result of the equalization procedure and simulation tuning allows for a comparison of charge measurements in ICARUS between Monte Carlo simulation and data, showing good performance with minimal residual bias between the two.

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

25. Graph Permutation Entropy: Extensions to the Continuous Case, A step towards Ordinal Deep Learning, and More

Abstract: Nonlinear dynamics play an important role in the analysis of signals. A popular, readily interpretable nonlinear measure is Permutation Entropy. It has recently been extended for the analysis of graph signals, thus providing a framework for non-linear analysis of data sampled on irregular domains. Here, we introduce a continuous version of Permutation Entropy, extend it to the graph domain, and develop a ordinal activation function akin to the one of neural networks. This is a step towards Ordinal Deep Learning, a potentially effective and very recently posited concept. We also formally extend ordinal contrasts to the graph domain. Continuous versions of ordinal contrasts of length 3 are also introduced and their advantage is shown in experiments. We also integrate specific contrasts for the analysis of images and show that it generalizes well to the graph domain allowing a representation of images, represented as graph signals, in a plane similar to the entropy-complexity one. Applications to synthetic data, including fractal patterns and popular non-linear maps, and real-life MRI data show the validity of these novel extensions and potential benefits over the state of the art. By extending very recent concepts related to permutation entropy to the graph domain, we expect to accelerate the development of more graph-based entropy methods to enable nonlinear analysis of a broader kind of data and establishing relationships with emerging ideas in data science.

Abstract: Increasing electric current from a single-electron source is a main challenge in an effort to establish the standard of the ampere defined by the fixed value of the elementary charge $e$ and operation frequency $f$. While the current scales with $f$, due to an operation frequency limit for maintaining accurate single-electron transfer, parallelisation of singleelectron sources is expected to be a more practical solution to increase the generated electric current $I = Nef$, where $N$ is a number of parallelised devices. One way to parallelise single-electron sources without increasing the complexity in device operation is to use a common gate. Such a scheme will require each device to have the same operation parameters for single-electron transfer. In order to investigate this possibility, we study the statistics for operation gate voltages using single-electron sources embedded in a multiplexer circuit. The multiplexer circuit allows us to measure 64 single-electron sources individually in a single cooldown. 28. Linking Assessment to Real Life Practice -- Comparing Work Based Assessments and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations Using Mystery Shopping

Abstract: Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and Work Based Assessments (WBAs) are the mainstays of assessing clinical competency in health professions' education. Underpinned by the extrapolation inference in Kane's Validity Framework, the purpose of this study is to determine whether OSCEs translate to real life performance by comparing students' OSCE performance to their performance in real-life (as a WBA) using the same clinical scenario, and to understand factors that affect students' performance. A sequential explanatory mixed methods approach where a grade comparison between students' performance in their OSCE and WBA was performed. Students were third year pharmacy undergraduates on placement at a community pharmacy in 2022. The WBA was conducted by a simulated patient, unbeknownst to students and indistinguishable from a genuine patient, visiting the pharmacy asking for health advice. The simulated patient was referred to as a 'mystery shopper' and the process to 'mystery shopping' in this manuscript. Community pharmacy is an ideal setting for real-time observation and mystery shopping as staff can be accessed without appointment. The students' provision of care and clinical knowledge was assessed by the mystery shopper using the same clinical checklist the student was assessed from in the OSCE. Students who had the WBA conducted were then invited to participate in semi-structured interviews to discuss their experiences in both settings. Overall, 92 mystery shopper (WBA) visits with students were conducted and 36 follow-up interviews were completed. The median WBA score was 41.7% [IQR 28.3] and significantly lower compared to the OSCE score 80.9% [IQR 19.0] in all participants (p < 0.001). Interviews revealed students knew they did not perform as well in the WBA compared to their OSCE, but reflected that they still need OSCEs to prepare them to manage real-life patients. Many students related their performance to how they perceived their role in OSCEs versus WBAs, and that OSCEs allowed them more autonomy to manage the patient as opposed to an unfamiliar workplace. As suggested by the activity theory, the performance of the student can be driven by their motivation which differed in the two contexts.

29. 'You Just Want a Break from the Hatred of Failure': The Lived Experience of Being a Student Physiotherapist Perfectionist and Considerations for Educators

Abstract: Perfectionism is a personality orientation associated with mental health and adjustment problems. Recent evidence demonstrates that perfectionism is widespread among students and on the rise, with recent generations of students placing increasingly more importance on perfection. Whilst the extant literature is vast, it tends to focus on psychopathology and identification of perfectionism correlates rather than the experience of student perfectionism. Furthermore, the education literature is scant and there is a need to understand the deeper processes and nuances of perfectionism, particularly within health professions education where intense study demands, competition to gain entry to educational programmes, and professional cultures may nurture the problem. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of ten physiotherapy students as they wrestled with perfectionism in the various facets of their studies. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken, and participants completed log sheets to document perfectionism-related experiences. Idiographic profiles were composed and interview transcripts were analysed, drawing upon features of both phenomenological and thematic analysis. Perfectionism was found to have toxic consequences for the learning experience. Harmful phenomenological experiences included perpetual and excessive achievement striving, punitive self-criticism and health and wellbeing difficulties. A range of sabotaging learning behaviours such as self-handicapping and feedback avoidance was also illuminated, and cultural and organisational influences perceived to foster perfectionism emerged. Findings are discussed in relation to underlying processes and implications for educators. The prospect of findings transferring to other educational contexts is highlighted.

30. Learning Problem Solving to Manage School-Life Challenges: The Impact on Student Success in College

Abstract: Colleges and universities have implemented a broad range of initiatives to support student success. Problem solving courses and course supplements are one approach. Evaluation of these courses has shown positive outcomes in terms of improved academic performance and other benefits. A number of these studies have also reported the largest positive effects with underperforming student groups. To further explore this approach a novel general education academic success course was developed. The course integrated a comprehensive problem-solving model into lectures and assignments as the basis of an active learning instructional strategy. Students were taught the model along with relevant academic skills content. They then applied the model to a personal challenge affecting their success in school and life. Using a matched cohort design, 826 course participants were compared with a campus-wide sample matched on key variables. Generalized linear models were used to estimate between group mean differences, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to compare time to graduation. Results showed that students who successfully completed the course achieved higher cumulative GPAs overall compared with matched peers. Highest GPAs for students who took the course as freshmen suggested a transfer of knowledge over time. Results also showed that the course significantly benefited students from historically at-risk populations in terms of higher GPAs, units earned, retention, and graduation rates. This study shows that a well designed problem solving course can help students, especially those who struggle academically, to more effectively meet the challenges of college and daily life.

Abstract: Owing to its roles in cellular signal transduction, protein phosphorylation plays critical roles in myriad cell processes. That said, detecting and quantifying protein phosphorylation has remained a challenge. We describe the use of a novel mass spectrometer (Orbitrap Astral) coupled with data-independent acquisition (DIA) to achieve rapid and deep analysis of human and mouse phosphoproteomes. With this method, we map approximately 30,000 unique human phosphorylation sites within a half-hour of data collection. The technology is benchmarked to other state-of-the-art MS platforms using both synthetic peptide standards and with EGF-stimulated HeLa cells. We apply this approach to generate a phosphoproteome multi-tissue atlas of the mouse. Altogether, we detect 81,120 unique phosphorylation sites within 12 hours of measurement. With this unique dataset, we examine the sequence, structural, and kinase specificity context of protein phosphorylation. Finally, we highlight the discovery potential of this resource with multiple examples of phosphorylation events relevant to mitochondrial and brain biology.

Abstract: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common childhood soft tissue sarcoma. For the alveolar subtype (ARMS), the presence of the PAX3::FOXO1 fusion gene and/or metastases are strong predictors of poor outcome. Metastatic PAX3::FOXO1+ ARMS often responds to chemotherapies initially, only to subsequently relapse and become resistant with most patients failing to survive beyond 8 years post-diagnosis. No curative intent phase II or phase III clinical trial has been available for patients in the past 10 years (ARST0921). Thus, metastatic ARMS represents a significantly unmet clinical need. Chemotherapy resistance in ARMS has previously been attributed to PAX3::FOXO1-mediated cell cycle checkpoint adaptation, which is mediated by an HDAC3-SMARCA4-miR-27a-PAX3::FOXO1 circuit that can be disrupted by HDAC3 inhibition. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of combining the epigenetic regulator entinostat, a Class I Histone Deacetylase (HDAC1-3) inhibitor, with RMS-specific chemotherapies in patient derived xenograft (PDX) models of RMS. We identified single agent, additive or synergistic relationships between relapse-specific chemotherapies and clinically relevant drug exposures of entinostat in three PAX3::FOXO1+ ARMS mouse models. This preclinical data provides further rationale for clinical investigation of entinostat, already known to be well tolerated in a pediatric phase I clinical trial (ADVL1513).

Abstract: PURPOSE: To determine the reliability of a nine-point summary scale for grading intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) image morphologic features based on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid. METHODS: Two trained graders independently divided spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans into nine subfields and then graded each subfield for the presence of intraretinal hyperreflective foci (HRF), reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), and incomplete or complete retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy (iRORA or cRORA). Grading results were assessed by summing the subfield grades into a nine-point summary score and also by using an eye-level binary grade for presence of the finding in any subfield. Gwets first-order agreement coefficient (AC1) was calculated to assess intergrader agreement. RESULTS: Images of 79 eyes from 52 patients were evaluated. Intergrader agreement was higher when the OCT grades were summarized with a nine-point summary score (Gwets AC1 0.92, 0.89, 0.99, and 0.99 for HRF, RPD, iRORA, and cRORA, respectively) compared with the eye-level binary grade (Gwets AC1 0.75, 0.76, 0.97, and 0.96 for HRF, RPD, iRORA, and cRORA, respectively), with significant differences detected for HRF and RPD. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a nine-point summary score showed higher reliability in grading when compared to the binary subfield- and eye-level data, and thus may offer more precise estimation of AMD disease staging. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: These findings suggest that a nine-point summary score could be a useful means of disease staging by using findings on OCT in clinical studies of AMD.

Abstract: PurposeAmong Latina breast cancer survivors, explore associations between rural/urban residence and health-related quality of life (HRQL), and whether associations are moderated by financial strain and low neighborhood cohesion.MethodsWe combined baseline data from two randomized controlled trials of a stress management intervention conducted among 151 urban and 153 rural dwelling Latinas with nonmetastatic breast cancer. Generalized linear models estimated associations between rural/urban status and HRQL (overall, emotional, social-family, physical, and functional well-being), and we examined moderation effects of financial strain and low neighborhood cohesion, controlling for age, marital status, and breast cancer characteristics.ResultsRural women reported better emotional (β = 1.85; 95% CI = 0.37, 3.33), functional (β = 2.23; 95% CI = 0.69, 3.77), and overall (β = 5.68; 95% CI = 1.12, 10.25) well-being than urban women, regardless of degree of financial strain or neighborhood cohesion; moderation effects were not statistically significant. Financial strain was inversely associated with emotional (β = -2.34; 95% CI = 3.63, -1.05), physical (β = -2.56; 95% CI = -4.12, -1.01), functional (β = -1.61; 95% CI = -2.96, -0.26), and overall (β = -6.67; 95% CI = -10.96, -2.98) well-being. Low neighborhood cohesion was inversely associated with emotional (β = -1.27; 95% CI = -2.50, -0.04), social-family (β = -1.72; 95% CI = -3.02, -0.42), functional (β = -1.63; 95% CI = -2.92, -0.34), and overall (β = -5.95; 95% CI = 9.76, -2.14) well-being.ConclusionsRural Latina breast cancer survivors reported better emotional, functional and overall well-being than their urban counterparts. Greater financial strain and less neighborhood cohesion were associated with worse HRQL on most domains regardless of rural/urban context.Implications for cancer survivorsInterventions that focus on increasing perceived neighborhood cohesion and reducing or better managing financial strain, could help improve Latina cancer survivors' well-being.

Abstract: During Hedgehog (Hh) signal transduction in development and disease, the atypical G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) SMOOTHENED (SMO) communicates with GLI transcription factors by binding the protein kinase A catalytic subunit (PKA-C) and physically blocking its enzymatic activity. Here, we show that GPCR kinase 2 (GRK2) orchestrates this process during endogenous mouse and zebrafish Hh pathway activation in the primary cilium. Upon SMO activation, GRK2 rapidly relocalizes from the ciliary base to the shaft, triggering SMO phosphorylation and PKA-C interaction. Reconstitution studies reveal that GRK2 phosphorylation enables active SMO to bind PKA-C directly. Lastly, the SMO-GRK2-PKA pathway underlies Hh signal transduction in a range of cellular and in vivo models. Thus, GRK2 phosphorylation of ciliary SMO and the ensuing PKA-C binding and inactivation are critical initiating events for the intracellular steps in Hh signaling. More broadly, our study suggests an expanded role for GRKs in enabling direct GPCR interactions with diverse intracellular effectors.

Abstract: Around 60% of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) remain undiagnosed after comprehensive genetic testing, primarily of protein-coding genes1. Large genome-sequenced cohorts are improving our ability to discover new diagnoses in the non-coding genome. Here we identify the non-coding RNA RNU4-2 as a syndromic NDD gene. RNU4-2 encodes the U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), which is a critical component of the U4/U6.U5 tri-snRNP complex of the major spliceosome2. We identify an 18 base pair region of RNU4-2 mapping to two structural elements in the U4/U6 snRNA duplex (the T-loop and stem III) that is severely depleted of variation in the general population, but in which we identify heterozygous variants in 115 individuals with NDD. Most individuals (77.4%) have the same highly recurrent single base insertion (n.64_65insT). In 54 individuals in whom it could be determined, the de novo variants were all on the maternal allele. We demonstrate that RNU4-2 is highly expressed in the developing human brain, in contrast to RNU4-1 and other U4 homologues. Using RNA sequencing, we show how 5 splice-site use is systematically disrupted in individuals with RNU4-2 variants, consistent with the known role of this region during spliceosome activation. Finally, we estimate that variants in this 18 base pair region explain 0.4% of individuals with NDD. This work underscores the importance of non-coding genes in rare disorders and will provide a diagnosis to thousands of individuals with NDD worldwide.

Abstract: Recent discoveries in biology have highlighted the importance of protein and RNA-based condensates as an alternative to classical membrane-bound organelles. Here, we demonstrate the design of pure RNA condensates from nanostructured, star-shaped RNA motifs. We generate condensates using two different RNA nanostar architectures: multi-stranded nanostars whose binding interactions are programmed via linear overhangs, and single-stranded nanostars whose interactions are programmed via kissing loops. Through systematic sequence design, we demonstrate that both architectures can produce orthogonal (distinct and immiscible) condensates, which can be individually tracked via fluorogenic aptamers. We also show that aptamers make it possible to recruit peptides and proteins to the condensates with high specificity. Successful co-transcriptional formation of condensates from single-stranded nanostars suggests that they may be genetically encoded and produced in living cells. We provide a library of orthogonal RNA condensates that can be modularly customized and offer a route toward creating systems of functional artificial organelles for the task of compartmentalizing molecules and biochemical reactions.

38. Relative contributions of different sources of epistemic uncertainty on seismic hazard in California

Abstract: We evaluate the relative impact of three sources of epistemic uncertainty on probabilistic seismic hazard analyses in California: source model uncertainty, ground motion model (GMM) uncertainty, and site parameter uncertainty. Seismic source model uncertainty is inherently contained in the source model framework applied by the USGS in the 2023 National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM23); we have added tools to extract this uncertainty for California sites in the open-source seismic hazard software OpenSHA. GMM uncertainty is generally accounted for using alternative models in PSHA or a single backbone model with a defined uncertainty. Site parameter uncertainty refers to uncertainty in the shear wave velocity of the upper 30 meters of the site profile (VS30) and potentially other independent site parameters.We demonstrate the impacts of these major sources of epistemic uncertainty at the sites of two UC campuses, Berkeley, which is located near the active Hayward fault, and Davis, which is located in the relatively quiescent Central Valley. We investigate potential correlations between the different sources of uncertainty and find that source uncertainty is practically independent of GMM and VS30 uncertainty at Berkeley but dependent on GMM and VS30 at Davis. At both locations, GMM and site parameter uncertainty are correlated (i.e., inter-dependent). We represent epistemic uncertainty in ground motion with a period-dependent log-normal standard deviation term that is specific to a given site location, site condition, and exceedance frequency. We show that at Berkeley, the total epistemic uncertainty can be well approximated by the square root sum of squares (SRSS) of source uncertainty (i.e., uncertainty in ground motions related solely to the source model) and the combined GMM and site parameter uncertainty. We find that combined GMM and VS30 uncertainty is comparable to or greater than the source uncertainty at many oscillator periods at both sites. Combined uncertainties range from natural log standard deviations of about 0.2 at short periods to 0.6 at Berkeley and 0.3-0.7 at Davis at long periods.

39. Recommendations on best available science for the United States National Seismic Hazard Model

Abstract: The 50 state update to the 2023 United States National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) is the latest in a sequence published by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). The 2023 NSHM is intended for use in building codes and similar applications at return periods of 475 years (corresponding to exceedance probabilities of 10% in 50 years) or longer. In reviewing the model, the NSHM Program Steering Committee, consisting of the authors of this paper, considered the characteristics of “best available science” that are applicable to the NSHM. Best available science must perform better than the previous NSHM, and there should be no available alternatives that could improve the models. 40. A general framework for modeling subregional path effects

Abstract: Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) West2 ground motion models (GMMs) include regional path adjustments for broad jurisdictional regions, which necessarily averages spatially variable path effects within those regions. We extend that framework to account for systematic variations in attenuation within subregions defined in consideration of geologic differences. In recent years, cell-based methods which systematically account for spatial variations by summing the attenuation effects over a fine discretization of uniform-rectangular cells (e.g., Dawood and Rodriquez-Marek 2013; Kuehn et al. 2019) have been shown to be an effective alternative to regionalization and a step towards modelling non-ergodic path effects. The main drawbacks of these models, however, are their increased computational complexity, poorly informed coefficients for cells in which few paths travel, and unoptimized boundaries that may span across the limits of geologic domains. The framework presented here considers physio-geological differences to form subregional boundaries. Broad jurisdictional regions are divided into a number of subregions that are orders of magnitude greater in size than the uniform cells of cell-based methods, but smaller than regions corresponding to the NGA-West2 adjustments. Subregional boundaries are informed by geological differences and empirical observations to create domains with internally similar properties. The total attenuation effect for a given path that traverses multiple subregions is obtained by weighting the individual subregional effects by the proportion of the path length within each subregion. This approach has been successfully applied in California, where it was shown to achieve a reduction in bias and within-event and single-station variability relative to an NGA-West2 GMM for ground motions at large distance (RJB > 100 km). The framework presented here can readily be adapted for other GMMs and regions.

41. User-interaction with a web-served global ground motion relational database

Abstract: We present an application programming interface (API) which facilitates public access to a global relational database of earthquake ground motion intensity measures, associated metadata, and time-series data. Next Generation Attenuation (NGA)-East and NGA-West2 project spreadsheets have been adapted into a relational database format composed of multiple tables through a series of primary and foreign keys. The combined dataset has been expanded to include contributions from earthquakes, generally with magnitudes greater than M3.9, that have occurred since the conclusion of the data synthesis component of both projects in 2011. Currently the database includes 62,449 ground motions recorded at 9,092 stations for 899 events. The database is accessible through an API, which allows users to interact with and query the database directly without detailed knowledge of structure query language (SQL). Simple queries are constructed by appending relatively straightforward query string parameters to the end of a uniform resource location (URL) that serves as an endpoint, which returns only data that satisfy the query constraints. The web-served nature of the database means that users have immediate access to ground motion data as soon as it is collected, reviewed, and uploaded. Furthermore, integrated end-to-end workflows – which do not require files to be downloaded and saved in local memory – are possible through the API. The structure of the database has been designed to accommodate growth, with ongoing efforts to integrate global ground motion data in anticipation of the NGA-West3 project, and improve ease-of access through the API.

42. Findings from a decade of ground motion simulation validation research and a path forward

Abstract: Simulated ground motions can advance seismic hazard assessments and structural response analyses, particularly for conditions with limited recorded ground motions such as large magnitude earthquakes at short source-to-site distances. Rigorous validation of simulated ground motions is required before hazard analysts, practicing engineers, or regulatory bodies can be confident in their use. A decade ago, validation exercises were mainly limited to comparisons of simulated-to-observed waveforms and median values of spectral accelerations for selected earthquakes. The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Ground Motion Simulation Validation (GMSV) group was formed to increase coordination between simulation modelers and research engineers with the aim of devising and applying more effective methods for simulation validation.In this presentation, we summarize what has been learned in over a decade of GMSV activities. We categorize different validation methods according to their approach and the metrics considered. Two general validation approaches are to compare validation metrics from simulations to those from historical records or to those from semi-empirical models. Validation metrics consist of ground motion characteristics and structural responses. We discuss example validation studies that have been impactful in the past decade and suggest future research directions. Key lessons learned are that validation is application-specific, our outreach and dissemination need improvement, and much validation-related research remains unexplored.This presentation is a summary of our recent paper, Rezaeian et al. (2024), referenced below.

43. Empirical site response of Mexico City through regionalization of global subduction GMMs

Abstract: We assemble a dataset which enhances existing Central America and Mexico data for the NGASubduction (NGA-Sub) project, including now additional earthquake ground motions and site parameters from Mexico. This data has been used to provide regional customization of NGA-Sub global Ground Motion Models (GMMs) for application in Mexico, paying particular attention to the site response of Mexico City (CDMX). The expanded database for Mexico incorporates smaller magnitude earthquakes (M < 6) and three significant events (M 7.2-8.3) that occurred in 2017 and 2018. These latter events are particularly important, because they are well recorded over a broad distance range and apply for hazard-critical conditions. Our focus here is on presenting the observed site response in CDMX, which we model based on the time-averaged shear wavevelocity in the upper 30 meters (VS30) and the Peak Ground Acceleration at a reference rock site (PGAr). Theempirical model we propose is different from previous work in several ways. First, it is properly centered withrespect to GMMs. Second, it is referenced to VS30 = 760 m/s, which is significantly firmer than the reference sitepreviously used in practice, taken from a location on the UNAM campus with VS30 ~ 300 m/s. Third, we identifysite amplification as nonlinear, whereas linear response has been assumed in prior models. The extent of thisnonlinearity is characterized using an established seismic zonation for CDMX, being more pronounced in softersites (Zone III) compared to stiffer ones (Zone I). This nonlinear effect is prominent at short periods and disappears at long periods. The advantages of the provided model include a unified framework for both withinand outside CDMX (contrasting current practices) and the integration of applicable features from global modelswith necessary local customization.

44. Reliability of low frequency mHVSR ordinates

Abstract: Microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (mHVSR) are frequency-dependent ratios of Fourier amplitude spectra of the horizontal to vertical components of a 3-component recording of ambient ground motions from microtremors. Results from mHVSR tests can identify the frequencies associated with site resonances at sites with large impedance contrasts, and hence have potential to provide useful parameters for predicting seismic site response. Site measurements are made by recording ground vibrations either from a temporarily deployed seismometer, typically recording for a relatively short period of time (~1-2 hrs.), or from a permanently-installed broadband seismometer. In this paper, we discuss ongoing work investigating the reliability of low frequency (< ∼0.1 Hz) mHVSR ordinates. Such low frequency ordinates are potentially useful for sites that are known to have deep basins (e.g., LA Basin, Imperial Valley, Great Salt Lake basin), where fundamental frequencies may fall in this range and direct measurements of depth to bedrock are difficult to make. We have found that low-frequency mHVSR ordinates (< ∼0.1-0.2 Hz) are for practical purposes not reliable in most cases, even when measured by high-quality temporary or permanent broadband sensors. In this paper, we discuss sensor drift and its limited impact on the reliability of mHVSR ordinates. We document the low frequency problem for multiple sites, although we do not have a solution as of this writing for how to improve the reliability of low-frequency results.

45. A maching learning-based analysis of liquefaction input factors using the Next Generation Liquefaction database

Abstract: Liquefaction triggering is typically predicted using fully-empirical and/or semi-empirical models. Hence, such models are heavily reliant upon available liquefaction (and/or lack thereof) case history data. These predictive models are based on a variety of factors, describing the demand (i.e., the cyclic stress ratio, CSR in existing legacy models) and the capacity (i.e., the cyclic resistance ratio, CRR). However, the degree to which these factors truly affect models’ performance is unknown. To explore this aspect and quantitatively rank the importance of liquefaction input model parameters, we leverage a Random Forest Machine Learning (ML) approach using two methods: (1) a feature importance metric based on the Gini impurity index, and (2) a SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP)-based approach. Both approaches were employed using typical input factors used in legacy liquefaction triggering models based on cone penetration test (CPT) data. Such analyses were performed using all reviewed (i.e., fully vetted) data in the Next Generation Liquefaction (NGL) database. Our analysis then separately explores the impact on resulting models of seven input parameters. We show that the most important input parameters are: (1) the peak ground acceleration, (2) the soil behavior type index, and (3) the earthquake magnitude (which serves as a proxy for duration in such models). The input parameters with the lowest importance are the total and the effective vertical stresses. A limitation of this analysis is that the ML model used does not allow for extrapolation beyond the range of the data. As a result, for input parameters with narrow distributions of the data (i.e., somewhat limited parameter space), a lower ranking could be associated with such limited availability of a wide range of values, rather than being related to actual low importance. Abstract: Natural photosystems couple light harvesting to charge separation using a 'special pair' of chlorophyll molecules that accepts excitation energy from the antenna and initiates an electron-transfer cascade. To investigate the photophysics of special pairs independently of the complexities of native photosynthetic proteins, and as a first step toward creating synthetic photosystems for new energy conversion technologies, we designed C2-symmetric proteins that hold two chlorophyll molecules in closely juxtaposed arrangements. X-ray crystallography confirmed that one designed protein binds two chlorophylls in the same orientation as native special pairs, whereas a second designed protein positions them in a previously unseen geometry. Spectroscopy revealed that the chlorophylls are excitonically coupled, and fluorescence lifetime imaging demonstrated energy transfer. The cryo-electron microscopy structure of a designed 24-chlorophyll octahedral nanocage with a special pair on each edge closely matched the design model. The results suggest that the de novo design of artificial photosynthetic systems is within reach of current computational methods.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic not $2$, whose Lie algebra is denoted $\mathfrak{g}$. We call a subvariety $\mathfrak{X}$ of the nilpotent cone $N \subset \mathfrak{g}$ monogamous if for every $e\in \mathfrak{X}$, the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triples $(e,h,f)$ with $f\in \mathfrak{X}$ are conjugate under the centraliser $C_G(e)$. Building on work by the first two authors, we show there is a unique maximal closed $G$-stable monogamous subvariety $V \subset N$ and that it is an orbit closure, hence irreducible. 48. Virtual Urban Field Studies: Evaluating Urban Interaction Design Using Context-Based Interface Prototypes

Abstract: In this study, we propose the use of virtual urban field studies (VUFS) through context-based interface prototypes for evaluating the interaction design of auditory interfaces. Virtual field tests use mixed-reality technologies to combine the fidelity of real-world testing with the affordability and speed of testing in the lab. In this paper, we apply this concept to rapidly test sound designs for autonomous vehicle (AV)--pedestrian interaction with a high degree of realism and fidelity. We also propose the use of psychometrically validated measures of presence in validating the verisimilitude of VUFS. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, we analysed users' perceptions of presence in our VUFS prototype and the relationship to our prototype's effectiveness. We also examined the use of higher-order ambisonic spatialised audio and its impact on presence. Our results provide insights into how VUFS can be designed to facilitate presence as well as design guidelines for how this can be leveraged.

49. Analysis and Applications of a Heralded Electron Source

Abstract: We analytically describe the noise properties of a heralded electron source made from a standard electron gun, a weak photonic coupler, a single photon counter, and an electron energy filter. We argue the traditional heralding figure of merit, the Klyshko efficiency, is an insufficient statistic for characterizing performance in dose-control and dose-limited applications. Instead, we describe the sub-Poissonian statistics of the source using the fractional reduction in variance and the fractional increase in Fisher Information. Using these figures of merit, we discuss the engineering requirements for efficient heralding and evaluate potential applications using simple models of electron lithography, bright-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (BFSTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We find that the advantage in each of these applications is situational, but potentially significant: dynamic control of the trade-off between write speed and shot noise in electron lithography; an order of magnitude dose reduction in BFSTEM for thin samples (e.g. 2D materials); and a doubling of dose efficiency for wall-steepness estimation in SEM.

50. Microwave-optical spectroscopy of Rydberg excitons in the ultrastrong driving regime

Abstract: We study the ultrastrong driving of Rydberg excitons in Cu$_2$O by a microwave field. The effect of the field is studied using optical absorption spectroscopy, and through the observation of sidebands on the transmitted laser light. A model based on Floquet theory is constructed to study the system beyond the rotating wave approximation. We obtain near quantitative agreement between theory and experiment across a 16-fold range of microwave field strengths spanning from the perturbative to the ultrastrong driving regime. Compared to Rydberg atoms, the large non-radiative widths of Rydberg excitons leads to new behaviour such as the emergence of an absorption continuum without ionization., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures
