1. Upstream proton cyclotron waves: occurrence and amplitude dependence on IMF cone angle at Mars — from MAVEN observations

Abstract: Proton cyclotron waves (PCWs) can be generated by ion pickup of Martian exospheric particles in the solar wind. The solar wind ion pickup process is highly dependent on the “IMF cone angle” — the angle between the solar wind velocity and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), which also plays an important role in the generation of PCWs. Using data from 2.15 Martian years of magnetic field measurements collected by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, we have identified 3307 upstream PCW events. Their event number distribution decreases exponentially with their duration. A statistical investigation of the effects of IMF cone angle on the amplitudes and occurrence rates of PCWs reveals a slight tendency of PCWs’ amplitudes to decrease with increasing IMF cone angle. The relationship between the amplitude and IMF cone angle is weak, with a correlation coefficient r = –0.3. We also investigated the influence of IMF cone angle on the occurrence rate of PCWs and found that their occurrence rate is particularly high for intermediate IMF cone angles (~18°–42°) even though highly oblique IMF orientation occurs most frequently in the upstream region of the Martian bow shock. We also conclude that these variabilities are not artefacts of temporal coverage biases in MAVEN sampling. Our results demonstrate that whereas IMF cone angle strongly influences the occurrence of PCWs, IMF cone angle may also weakly modulate their amplitudes in the upstream region of Mars.

Abstract: Thousands of exoplanets have now been discovered with a huge range of masses, sizes and orbits: from rocky Earth-like planets to large gas giants grazing the surface of their host star. However, the essential nature of these exoplanets remains largely mysterious: there is no known, discernible pattern linking the presence, size, or orbital parameters of a planet to the nature of its parent star. We have little idea whether the chemistry of a planet is linked to its formation environment, or whether the type of host star drives the physics and chemistry of the planet’s birth, and evolution. The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) has been selected by the European Space Agency as the next mediumclass science mission, M4, to address these scientific questions. ARIEL was conceived to observe a large number (~1000) of transiting planets for statistical understanding, including gas giants, Neptunes, super-Earths and Earth-size planets around a range of host star types using transit spectroscopy in the 1.25-7.8 μm spectral range and multiple narrow-band photometry in the optical. ARIEL will focus on warm and hot planets to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials compared to their colder Solar System siblings. Said warm and hot atmospheres are expected to be more representative of the planetary bulk composition. Observations of these warm/hot exoplanets, and in particular of their elemental composition (especially C, O, N, S, Si), will allow the understanding of the early stages of planetary and atmospheric formation during the nebular phase and the following few million years. ARIEL will thus provide a representative picture of the chemical nature of the exoplanets and relate this directly to the type and chemical environment of the host star. ARIEL is designed as a dedicated survey mission for combined-light spectroscopy, capable of observing a large and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. Transit, eclipse and phase-curve spectroscopy methods, whereby the signal from the star and planet are differentiated using knowledge of the planetary ephemerides, allow us to measure atmospheric signals from the planet at levels of 10-100 part per million (ppm) relative to the star and, given the bright nature of targets, also allows more sophisticated techniques, such as eclipse mapping, to give a deeper insight into the nature of the atmosphere. These types of observations require a stable payload and satellite platform with broad, instantaneous wavelength coverage to detect many molecular species, probe the thermal structure, identify clouds and monitor the stellar activity. The wavelength range proposed covers all the expected major atmospheric gases from e.g. H2O, CO2, CH4 NH3, HCN, H2S through to the more exotic metallic compounds, such as TiO, VO, and condensed species. Simulations of ARIEL performance in conducting exoplanet surveys have been performed – using conservative estimates of mission performance and a full model of all significant noise sources in the measurement – using a list of potential ARIEL targets that incorporates the latest available exoplanet statistics. The conclusion at the end of the Phase A study, is that ARIEL – in line with the stated mission objectives – will be able to observe about 1000 exoplanets depending on the details of the adopted survey strategy, thus confirming the feasibility of the main science objectives.

Abstract: International audience; As a minor species in the Martian thermosphere, Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a tracer that can be used to constrain changing circulation patterns between the lower thermosphere and upper mesosphere of Mars. By linking CO density distributions to dynamical wind patterns, the structure and variability of the atmosphere will be better understood. Direct measurements of CO can therefore provide insight into the magnitude and pattern of winds and provide a metric for studying the response of the atmosphere to solar forcing. In addition, CO measurements can help solve outstanding photochemical modeling problems in explaining the abundance of CO at Mars. CO is directly observable by electron impact excitation and solar resonance fluorescence emissions in the far-ultraviolet (FUV). The retrieval of CO from solar fluorescence was first proposed over 40 years ago, but has been elusive at Mars due to significant spectral blending. However, by simulating the spectral shape of each contributing emission feature, electron impact excitation and solar fluorescence brightnesses can be extracted from the composite spectrum using a multiple linear regression approach. We use CO Fourth Positive Group (4PG) molecular band emission observed on the limb (130 - 200 km) by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) on NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft over both northern and southern hemispheres from October 2014 to December 2016. We present the first direct retrieval of CO densities by FUV remote sensing in the upper atmosphere of Mars. Atmospheric composition is inferred using the terrestrial Atmospheric Ultraviolet Radiance Integrated Code adapted to the Martian atmosphere. We investigate the sensitivity of CO density retrievals to variability in solar irradiance, solar longitude, and local time. We compare our results to predictions from the Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model as well as in situ measurements by the Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer on MAVEN and quantify any differences.

Abstract: International audience; Nitric oxide (NO) is a well-known indicator of solar and auroral activity in the terrestrial upper atmosphere. Direct measurements of NO on Mars can therefore constrain studies of energetic processes controlling the composition and structure of its upper atmosphere (80-200 km). Identifying and quantifying these processes is one of the science objectives of NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission currently orbiting Mars. NO can be observed directly by solar resonance fluorescence in the mid-ultraviolet (MUV). Indeed, this approach has routinely been used to measure terrestrial NO for 50 years. On Mars, this “dayglow” emission is very weak relative to other bright MUV features and thus has confounded attempts at its detection there for nearly the same amount of time. Here, we report the first detection of the NO dayglow in the Martian atmosphere using limb observations by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) on the MAVEN spacecraft. The detection is enabled by the spectral modeling and removal of the carbon monoxide Cameron bands, which dominate the MUV limb spectra. We focus on the spectral region between 213.0-225.5 nm, where three NO gamma bands emit. We will infer NO densities from the dayglow spectra and compare our observations with predictions from a photochemical model. We will discuss the implications, particularly in the context of previous in situ measurements.

Of particular interest for atmospheric studies are spec- trally-resolved mid-UV datacubes as shown in Fig- ure 1. Clouds, haze, dust and ozone can all be detect- ed and quantified through image analysis and re- trieval. IUVS observations are the only MAVEN data capable of probing below the spacecraft alti- tude, and provide an important link between the denser atmosphere and escape processes which are MAVEN’s primary focus (Jakosky et al. 2015).

From these apoapse disk images, information about clouds and aerosols can be retrieved and comprise the only MAVEN observations of topographic clouds and cloud morphologies. Measuring local time variability of large-scale recurring cloud features is made possible with MAVEN’s ~4.5-hour elliptical orbit, something not possible with sun-synchronous orbits. We have run the LMD MGCM (Mars global circulation model) at 1° x 1° resolution to simulate water ice cloud formation with inputs consistent with observing parameters and Mars seasons. Topographic clouds are observed to form daily during the late mornings of northern hemisphere spring and this phenomenon recurs until late summer (Ls = 160°), after which topographic clouds wane in thickness. By northern fall, most topographic clouds cease to form except over Arsia Mons and Pavonis Mons, where clouds can still be observed. Our data show moderate cloud formation over these regions as late as Ls = 220°, something difficult for the model to replicate. Previous studies have shown that models have trouble simulating equatorial cloud thickness in combination with a realistic amount of water vapor and not-too-thick polar water ice clouds, implying aspects of the water cycle are not fully understood. We present data/model comparisons as well as further refinements on parameter inputs based on IUVS observations.

The excited molecules rapidly relax by emitting photons in the UV δ and γ bands. These emissions are indicators of the N and O atom fluxes from the dayside to Mars’ nightside and the descending circulation pattern from the nightside thermosphere to the mesosphere (e.g. Bertaux et al., 2005 ; Bougher et al., 1990 ; Cox et al., 2008 ; Gagné et al., 2013 ; Gérard et al., 2008 ; Stiepen et al., 2015, 2017).Observations of these emissions are gathered from a large dataset spanning different seasonal conditions.We present discussion on the variability in the brightness and altitude of the emission with season, geographical position (longitude), and local time, along with possible interpretation by local and global changes in the mesosphere dynamics. We show the possible impact of atmospheric waves forcing longitudinal variability and data-to-model comparisons indicating a wave-3 structure in Mars’ nightside mesosphere. Quantitative comparison with calculations of the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique-Mars Global Climate Model (LMD-MGCM) suggests the model reproduces both the global trend of NO nightglow emission and its seasonal variation. However, it also indicates large discrepancies, with the emission up to a factor 50 times fainter in the model, suggesting that the predicted transport is too efficient toward the night winter pole in the thermosphere by ˜20° latitude to the north.These questions are now addressed through an extensive dataset of disk images, in complement to improved simulations of the LMD-MGCM and the Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (MGITM) models.

Abstract: International audience; The IUVS instrument on MAVEN contains an echelle spectrograph with a novel optical design to enable long-aperture measurements of emission lines in the absence of continuum, intended primarily to measure the H and D Ly α emission lines from the martian upper atmosphere. The main scientific goal of the echelle channel is to measure the H and D Ly α emissions that result from resonant scattering of solar emission and to discover how the H and D densities, temperatures, and escape fluxes vary with location, season, topography, etc. The global D/H ratio of the martian atmosphere is roughly 5 times higher than in the terrestrial atmosphere due to the escape of a large volume of water into space, likely early in the history of Mars. Since H atoms escape faster than D atoms, the D/H ratio increases with time as more water is lost. Earth-based IR observations have indicated large variations in the HDO/H2O ratio in the lower atmosphere from location to location, and possible changes with the atmospheric seasonal cycles [Villanueva et al. 2015]. HST and MEX measurements of the H corona of Mars have shown large (order of magnitude) changes in the H exosphere and escape flux with changing seasons and/or heliospheric distance [Clarke et al. 2014; Chaffin et al. 2014]. A series of observations of D and H with the IUVS echelle channel now show a strong trend in the variation of both emissions, with order of magnitude changes in both species in the upper atmosphere. With the added data expected in Fall 2016, we will be able to determine this trend over a full range of martian solar longitude. These results and a comparison with proposed processes that might lead to the observed changes will be presented.

Abstract: International audience; The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) on NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission observed the Martian upper atmosphere in late 2015 (Ls ~ 70) and early 2016 (Ls ~ 150). Although designed to measure the dayglow between 90-200 km IUVS also scans the limb down to 60 km, where solar scattered light dominates the mid-ultraviolet (MUV) signal. Occasionally, this MUV light shows enhanced scattering between 60-90 km indicating the presence of aerosols in the mesosphere. We quantify the solar scattering for each daylight scan obtained between October and December, 2015 and between April and June, 2016. We then identify over 100 scans of enhanced scattering between 60-90 km and assemble them both geographically and diurnally. The geographical distribution of the enhancements in 2015 is preferentially located near the equator, consistent with previous observations of mesospheric clouds for this part of the season. A wave three pattern in equatorial cloud occurrence suggests forcing from a non-migrating tide, possibly linked to the longitudinal variation of Mars surface topography. At the same time, there are indications of a diurnal variation such that the clouds seen in 2015 and 2016 are preferentially observed in the early morning, between 0600-0900 local solar time. This suggests an important role for a migrating temperature tide controlling the formation of Martian mesospheric clouds.

Abstract: International audience; Ozone (O3) on Mars is a product of the CO2 photolysis by ultraviolet radiation. It is destroyed with a timescale of less than ~1 hour during the day by the H, OH, and HO2 radicals. This tight coupling between O3 and HOx species makes ozone a sensitive tracer of the odd hydrogen chemistry that stabilizes the CO2 atmosphere of Mars, and ozone measurements offer a powerful constraint for photochemical models. Ozone is also expected to be anti-correlated to water vapour, the source of hydrogen radicals HOx. At high latitudes in winter, the absence of H2O prevents the production of HOx and the chemical lifetime of ozone may increase up to several days. In these conditions, the ozone column abundance usually reaches its largest values of the Martian year and ozone turns into a measurable tracer of the polar vortex dynamics.The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) is one of nine science instruments aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile and Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft. In the apoapse imaging phase, the spacecraft motion carries the IUVS lines-of-sight across the Martian disk while the scan mirror is used to make transverse swaths. This observation mode allows mapping the ozone vertically-integrated column from its signature in the solar ultraviolet flux backscattered by the surface and the atmosphere.This paper will present an overview of the first year of ozone mapping by IUVS. We will describe in particular the last Mars northern winter (2015) when the largest ozone columns have been observed since the beginning of the MAVEN mission. The data will be compared to prior Earth-based observations and to the SPICAM and MARCI ozone datasets. We will also test our quantitative understanding of the Martian ozone by comparing the IUVS observations to our three-dimensional model with photochemistry.

Abstract: International audience; We report results from a study of nitric oxide nightglow over the northern hemisphere of Mars during winter. We present observations of the nitric oxide δ and γ band emissions between 190 and 270 nm by the Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph on the MAVEN spacecraft. The emission reveals recombination of N and O atoms dissociated on the dayside of Mars, and is known to trace upper atmosphere hemispheric circulation patterns. We extend previous studies to higher latitudes, finding brighter emissions lower in the atmosphere as predicted from global circulation models. Statistically signicant variability suggests variation of the fluxes of N and O carried from the dayside thermosphere, as well as possible variations of the wind pattern in the nightside thermosphere and mesosphere. We report unexpected variability between the individual components of the nitric oxide band system. We provide statistical characteristics and evaluate possible explanations for this phenomenon.

Abstract: International audience; Observation of the Martian hot oxygen corona is an important but difficult measurement in planetary science. These energetic oxygen atoms are thought to be primarily produced by dissociative recombination of O2+ in the planet's ionosphere. While the corona is dominated by gravitationally bound particles, the fraction capable of escaping the planet is expected to be the major pathway for oxygen escape from Mars at the present time. Thus, observing the hot oxygen corona provides valuable insight into the planet’s atmospheric evolution. Up until now, characterization of this population has been elusive due to its extremely tenuous nature. We present here altitude profiles of the hot oxygen corona collected by the MAVEN IUVS instrument as part of its investigation of atmospheric escape from Mars. These measurements confirm the presence of this long anticipated feature of the Martian exosphere, and offer an invaluable way of probing the mechanisms driving escape of atomic oxygen at the present day. Correlation with MAVEN EUVM measurements suggests a relationship between coronal density and solar photoionizing flux, supporting the expectation that dissociative recombination in the ionosphere is the primary source of hot oxygen at Mars. The quality and quantity of the dataset provides valuable constraints for the coronal modeling community, and preliminary comparison of the observed gross structure with a Monte Carlo model is presented.

JGR, 1971; Stewart, JGR, 1972), Mariner 9 (Barth et al., Icaurs, 1972; Stewart et al. Icarus, 1972), and more recently by SPICAM aboard Mars Express (Leblanc et al., JGR, 2006). The results from these measurements reveal a large variability in the composition and structure of Martian upper atmosphere. However, due to the lack of simultaneous measurements of energy input in the atmosphere, such as solar electromagnetic and particle flux as well as limitations in the observation geometry and data itself, this variability is still not fully understood.We report a comprehensive study of Mars dayglow observations by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) satellite, focusing on upper atmospheric structure and seasonal variability. The dayglow emission spectra show features similar to previous UV measurements at Mars. The IUVS detected a second, low-altitude peak in the emission profile of OI 297.2 nm, confirmation of the prediction that the absorption of solar Lyman alpha emission is an important energy source there. We find a significant drop in thermospheric scale height and temperature between Ls = 218° and Ls = 337 - 352°, attributed primarily to the decrease in solar activity and increase in heliocentric distance. The CO2+ UVD peak intensity is well correlated with simultaneous observations of solar 17 - 22 nm irradiance at Mars by Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor (EUVM) aboard MAVEN. I will present and discuss the variability in Martian UV dayglow, its dependence on solar EUV irradiance, and the importance of IUVS observations in our current understanding of Mars’ thermosphere.

We will present and discuss the variability in Martian UV dayglow, its dependence on solar EUV flux, and the importance of IUVS observations in our current understanding of Mars’ thermosphere.

Abstract: International audience; The Martian ultraviolet dayglow provides information on the basic state of the Martian upper atmosphere. The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) on NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission has observed Mars at mid and far-UV wavelengths since its arrival in September 2014. In this work, we describe a linear regression method used to extract components of UV spectra from IUVS limb observations and focus in particular on molecular nitrogen (N2) photoelectron excited emissions. We identify N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) emissions for the first time at Mars and we also confirm the tentative identification of N2 Vegard-Kaplan (VK) emissions. We compare observed VK and LBH limb radiance profiles to model results between 90 and 210 km. Finally, we compare retrieved N2 density profiles to general circulation (GCM) model results. Contrary to earlier analyses using other satellite data that indicated N2 densities were a factor of three less than predictions, we find that N2 abundances exceed GCM results by about a factor of two at 130 km but are in agreement at 150 km.

Abstract: International audience; The Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph (IUVS) on the MAVEN spacecraft has detected two distinct types of auroral emission on Mars. First, we report the discovery of a low altitude, diffuse aurora spanning much of Mars’ northern hemisphere coincident with a solar energetic particle outburst. IUVS observed northerly latitudes during late December 2014, detecting auroral emission in virtually all nightside observations for ~5 days spanning virtually all geographic longitudes. The vertical profile showed emission down to ~70 km altitude (1 microbar), deeper than confirmed at any other planet. The onset and duration of emission coincide with the observed arrival of solar energetic particles up to 200 keV precipitating directly and deeply into the atmosphere. Preliminary modeling of the precipitation, energy deposition and spectral line emission yields good matches to the observations. These observations represent a new class of planetary auroras produced in the Martian middle atmosphere. Given minimal magnetic fields over most of the planet, Mars is likely to exhibit aurora more globally than Earth.Second, we confirm the existence of small patches of discrete aurora near crustal magnetic fields in Mars' southern hemisphere, as observed previously by SPICAM on Mars Express (Bertaux et al., Nature, 435, 790-794 (2005)). IUVS observed southern latitudes in July and August 2015, detecting discrete auroral emission in ~1% of suitable observations. Limb scans resolved both vertically and along-slit indicate this type of auroral emission was patchy on the scale of ~40 km, and located at higher altitudes ~140 km. The higher altitudes imply a lower energy of precipitating particles. The mix of spectral emissions also differed signficiantly from the diffuse aurora, indicating different excitation and quenching processes.We will discuss the observed properties of the aurora and associated charged particle precipitation, as well as the broader implications of this high-energy deposition into Mars' atmopshere.

Abstract: International audience; The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS, McClintock et al., 2014) onboard the MAVEN spacecraft has discovered diffuse aurora in Mars’ northern hemisphere spanning a wide range of geographic latitudes and longitudes (Figure 1). This widespread aurora differs from the small auroral patches discovered by the SPICAM instrument onboard the Mars Express spacecraft (Bertaux et al., 2005; Leblanc et al., 2008; Gérard et al., submitted; Soret et al., submitted) restricted to regions of crustal magnetic fields in the southern hemisphere. Furthermore, the northern diffuse aurora appears to peak at altitudes below 100 km, while the crustal field aurora peaked around 120 km.

In this study, we focus on three limb detections to determine the altitudes of the auroral emissions and their intensities. We then use a model of electron transport in the Martian thermosphere based on a Monte-Carlo method to simulate and to understand the excitation processes leading to these auroral emissions.

Abstract: International audience; A detailed search through the database of theSPICAM instrument on board Mars Express made itpossible to identify 16 signatures of the CO Cameronand CO2 doublet auroral emissions. These auroralUV signatures are all located in the southern hemisphere in the vicinity of the statistical boundary between open and closed field lines. The energy spectrum of the energetic electrons was simultaneously measured by ASPERA-3/ELS at higher altitude. The UV aurora is generally shifted from the region of enhanced downward electron energy flux by a few to several tens of degrees of latitude, suggesting that precipitation occurs in magnetic cusp like structures along inclined magnetic field lines. The ultraviolet brightness shows no proportionality with the electron flux measured at the spacecraft altitude. The Mars aurora appears as a sporadic short-lived feature. Results of Monte Carlo simulations will be compared with the observed brightness of the Cameron and CO2 + bands.

Abstract: International audience; The SPICAM experiment onboard Mars Express has accumulated over the last decade a wealth of observations that has permitted a detailed characterization of the atmospheric composition and activity from the near-surface to above the exosphere. SPICAM is dual ultraviolet (110 to 320 nm)-infrared (1 to 1.7 µm) spectrometer specifically designed to retrieve the major and minor species abundances of the Martian atmosphere [1]. SPICAM has the distinct capability of observing with a variety of geometrical configurations; monitoring the column-integrated abundances of ozone, water vapor as well as aerosols in a nadir-looking mode, characterizing their vertical distribution in either stellar or solar occultation modes so as to constrain their presence above typically 10 km up to 140 km of altitude (for CO 2) [2,3,4]. In a dedicated limb staring mode, SPICAM can infer the density of hydrogen atoms from 200 up to 10 000 km of altitude while using the resonantly scattered solar photons at the Lyman-alpha emission line of Hydrogen [5,6].Since the beginning of its operations at Mars, SPICAM has performed several thousands of stellar and solar occultations and has provided a multi-annual tracking in nadir mode. Here, we present a synthesis of the observations collected to date in order to assemble a single, coherent picture of the Martian atmosphere specifically adressing the issue of water decomposition into its lighter component (hydrogen) that can escape to space. In doing so, we propose a different angle for the long-term evolution of water and hydrogen on Mars.

Abstract: International audience; Mars has lost a significant fraction of its initial water inventory to space, as evidenced by surface morphology and an enrichment of the heavy isotope deuterium relative to hydrogen. This loss continues today via thermal Jeans escape of neutral hydrogen from the extended H corona. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission's Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer IUVS constrains this escape with high cadence, spatially resolved measurements of the corona in scattered sunlight in the Lyman alpha line of neutral H at 121.6 nm. These measurements indicate spatial variability in the corona never before recognized, with potential effects on reconstructing the escape history of water and on retrieved escape rates from previous spatially unresolved observations. I will present our current progress in retrieving escape rates and density distributions from the IUVS observations, including the degree to which observations of the H corona can constrain the thermospheric general circulation at Mars.

Abstract: International audience; We present direct number density retrievals of carbon dioxide (CO2) and molecular nitrogen (N2) for the upper atmosphere of Mars using limb scan observations during October and November 2014 by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph on board NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. We use retrieved CO2 densities to derive temperature variability between 170 and 220 km. Analysis of the data shows (1) low-mid latitude northern hemisphere CO2 densities at 170 km vary by a factor of about 2.5, (2) on average, the N2/CO2 increases from 0.042 ± 0.017 at 130 km to 0.12 ± 0.06 at 200 km, and (3) the mean upper atmospheric temperature is 324 ± 22 K for local times near 14:00.

Abstract: International audience; Using the Mars Atmospheric and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN) Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS), we found periodic longitudinal variations in CO2 density in the Martian atmosphere. The variations exhibit significant structure with longitudinal wave numbers 1, 2, and 3 in an effectively constant local solar time frame, and we attribute this structure to nonmigrating tides. The wave-2 component is dominated by the diurnal eastward moving DE1 tide at the equator and the semidiurnal stationary S0 tide at the midlatitudes. Wave-3 is dominated by the diurnal eastward moving DE2 tide, with possibly the semidiurnal eastward moving SE1 tide causing an amplitude increase at the midlatitudes. Structure in the wave-1 component can be explained by the semidiurnal westward moving SW1 tide.

Abstract: International audience; The observations of the O I 130.4 nm resonant line performed by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) are presented. This emission line is observed during the different orbit phases of MAVEN : disk observations at apoapsis, limb scans at periapsis and coronal scans during the outbound orbit leg. The atomic oxygen density which is an important parameter to understand the heating, composition, dynamics of the Martian upper atmosphere and the temperature at 200 km are retrieved from an automatic inversion algorithm. A set of observations performed by IUVS during the first months of the mission are analyzed to study the variabiity of the atomic oxygen in the Martian upper atmosphere. The derived oxygen density and the temperature at the exobase are in the predicted range (107 - 108 cm-3; 200 – 300K) by the current thermospheric models of Mars. The derived parameters are very sensitive to the absolute calibration of the instrument which is the main source of uncertainty on the results presented.
