The tourism industry contains many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMTEs). Furthermore, the tourism industry is often said to be less innovative than other industries and SMTEs’ lack of motivation, knowledge and resources are often claimed to be the reasons why the industry is not very innovative. At the same time, though, rich and thick data on SMTEs and innovativeness is lacking. In order to contribute to the filling of this knowledge gap, this paper draws on a case company (a Danish caravan site) that has been innovative. The study reveals a series of reasons why this specific enterprise has been innovative and further, the paper suggests how these findings may transcend the case company.

Understandings of tourists' contemporary information needs that emphasize spontaneous travel decision-making and tourism as an exclusively pleasurable experience do not account for the contexts of people with dementia and their carers, for whom travelling requires unique adaptations. Through netnography in four online fora, this paper investigates the hitherto under-researched travel information needs of informal carers of people living with dementia. The qualitative data highlights the breadth of pre-travel information needs and their strong emotional dimensions both when carers plan to travel with and without the person with dementia for whom they care. Our analysis uncovers the complex, interdependent nature of travel-related information queries which refer not only to narrow tourism themes but also to health, healthcare and social policy. This exploratory paper concludes with recommendations for addressing the travel information needs of this globally growing category of people, wherein collaboration across destinations, tourism and hospitality industries, the healthcare sector and other stakeholders may be required. This photo essay reports on two TriWadWalks, which were 5-day landscape explorations into the Wadden Sea region of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. These walks were organised by six universities to foster collaboration in research, teaching, and knowledge creation. A key and recurring observation was that the diverse composition of the group, and travelling through the landscape with an open agenda, distinguished the TriWadWalks from everyday excursions or fieldwork. Our experiences exemplify how being out there in the world, talking to people, and engaging with the landscape and with each other creates human-environment oriented landscape-understandings, in which perspectives blend and (disciplinary) borders are crossed. Building on the TriWadWalk experiences, we see the potential for this collaborative approach to be(come) a transdisciplinary knowledge building tool to be used in the planning and governance of the vulnerable Wadden Sea landscape, and for the education and 'bildung' of future landscape professionals. To make human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, as encouraged by SDG#11, and in the sub-goal of 11.4 to “strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage”, this paper argues that more nuanced understandings are needed of how people relate to nature, including world class nature. The paper furthermore investigates and discusses interpretations and understandings of nature that is not “wild”, untouched, untamed or freed from human intervention and settlement. It advances conceptualizations that benefit efforts to protect and safeguard cultural and natural heritage by providing more nuanced understandings of what nature, respectively culture “is”, using the Danish part of the Wadden Sea (a National Park, parts of which are also a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site) as a relevant case. Based on data collected from 48 research participants by means of various mobile and qualitative methods, variations of interpretations and appreciations of nature voiced by the research participants point to refined understanding of the subtle nuances of nature and culture as a first critical step towards strengthening efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage. The paper examines how Western consumers ideologically and culturally construct edibility, and discusses how this affects household food waste. Consumers' enactments of food waste range from hedonist to altruist ideologies, anchored in a continuum ranging from "disgust" to "duty" and "respect." Furthermore, consumers' categorizations of food as edible or not depend on their self-enactment of competency, leading to internalization or objectification of such assessments. Finally, across altruistic and hedonistic ideologies, interviewees use procrastination in order to reduce feelings of guilt when throwing away food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
