4. A long term hydraulic stimulation study conducted at the Salak geothermal field

Abstract

Awi 18-1 is an injection well drilled in the Cianten Caldera, near the western margin of the Salak (Awibengkok) reservoir in west Java, Indonesia. As the initial well injectivity was low, a long-term hydraulic stimulation was conducted to improve the permeability and establish a better connection to existing natural fractures. A geologic model of the area was built by integration of surface mapping, log and core data, and well performance information. The well penetrated pre- and post-caldera volcanics, the caldera ring fault intrusion and contact metamorphic zone, and marine sedimentary rocks. Permeability was found primarily near the caldera margin in pre-caldera lavas and ring fault intrusion along steeply dipping N to NW and NE trending fractures that were partially sealed by mineral precipitation. A geomechanical simulation model was developed from the geologic model to understand the injectivity evolution mechanisms and behaviours under different injection conditions, and also predict long term future injectivity performance. The model domain contains the completed interval of a deviated injection well (Awi 18-1) and covers the majority of microseismic events observed during the course of the stimulation. It simulates injectivity evolution using fully coupled processes of heat and mass transfers in poro-elastic media. The model was history-matched against the injection data (i.e. pressure) by calibrating rock mechanical and fracture properties. A few what-if scenarios under different operation conditions were simulated to evaluate the effects of injection pressure and temperature on the injectivity. These what-if scenario simulations indicate that both colder injection temperature and higher wellhead pressure lead to better injection efficiency. Also, the higher pressure had prolonged impacts while the colder temperature impacts are limited at the early time.

Abstract

Micro-scale Proton-induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) of trace elements (TE) in sulfides provides insights into geologic processes including magmatic system evolution, ore forming events, and fluid-flow processes. The Los Alamos nuclear microprobe was used to determine TE concentrations and ratios in sulfides from diverse geologic environments including hydrothermal ore deposits, coal seams, and metamorphic rocks. Pyrrhotite (Po) from silicic volcanics contains high Cu and Ni; Po from the Clear Lake volcanic field has higher Mo than does Po from other volcanic fields. Coal pyrites contain high Cu, As, Se, Mo and Pb, and show high As/Se and Mo/Se in marine influenced sulfides from the Lower Kittanning coal, but not in other marine-influenced coals. Sulfides are amenable to micro-PIXE studies because of the difficulties in obtaining the homogeneous standards required for many other TE microanalytical techniques. © 2003 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was estimated for Proprioseiopsis asetus Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on pollen and two prey species at 35°C. Cattail, Typha latifolia L., pollen and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) were equally favorable as food and superior to Tetranychus urticae Koch. More females were produced in a shorter time when P. asetus was fed F. occidentalis or pollen; however, survivorship was longer when the predator was fed T. urticae. On an F. occidentalis diet, calculated rm values ranged from 0.2789 to 0.2925. The net reproductive rate was lower on a diet of T. urticae (6.48) than on pollen (9.76) or on F. occidentalis (21.39). The finite rate of increase was lower on T. urticae (1.1868) than on pollen (1.3274) or F. occidentalis (1.3398). The mean generation time was similar on the three diets. That the data reported here were collected at 35°C makes it remarkable. P. asetus may have great potential as a biological control agent of arthropods, especially thrips under climatic conditions of high temperatures such as in protected culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Field experiments evaluated the effects of nematicide and fertility on performance of 'Tifway 419' bermudagrass parasitized by the sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus). Plot treatments were nontreated or nematicide (1,3-dichloropropene) treated combined with different nitrogen (N) fertilizer levels. Effects of treatments on numbers of B. longicaudatus and turf performance were compared. Nematicide consistently reduced numbers of B. longicaudatus, but fertilizer level had no effect on B. longicaudatus. Turf performance of nematicide-treated plots was improved compared with nontreated plots during both experiments. Increasing N fertilizer level improved turf performance in nematicide-treated plots in some cases, but had no effect on turf performance in nontreated plots in either experiment. Results suggest that increasing N fertilizer levels may not improve turf performance at sites infested with B. longicaudatus unless nematode management tactics are effective in reducing nematode densities.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to quantify the effects of the sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) on root reductions and quantity of nitrate (NO(3) (-)) leached from 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass in lysimeters. Forty lysimeters were planted with 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass, of which 20 were inoculated with B. longicaudatus and 20 were noninoculated. Root length was compared between treatments at six, 12, and 18 weeks after initiation of the experiments. Turf was fertilized every three weeks, and leaching events were simulated at 21 and 42-day intervals in trial one and trial two, respectively. Leachate was collected, and the quantity of NO(3) (-) leached was compared between treatments. Root reductions were observed in lysimeters inoculated with B. longicaudatus at all evaluation dates. Quantity of NO(3) (-) leached was greater in inoculated lysimeters at the 18-week evaluation during both trials. This study indicates that nematode damage to turf roots limits root vigor and N uptake, thereby increasing nitrate leaching, adding to water quality concerns.

Abstract

Volcan Popocatipetl is a Quaternary stratovolcano located 60 km southeast of Mexico City. The summit crater is the site of recent ash eruptions, excess degassing, and dacite dome growth. The modern cone comprises mainly pyroclastic flow deposits, airfall tephras, debris flows, and reworked deposits of andesitic composition; it is flanked by more mafic monogenetic vents. In least-degassed fallout tuffs and mafic scoria, transition metals are concentrated in phases formed before eruption, during eruption, and after eruption. Preeruptive minerals occur in both lavas and tephra, and include oxides and sulfides in glass and phenocrysts. The magmatic oxides consist of magnetite, ilmenite, and chromite; the sulfides consist of both (Fe,Ni)1-xS (MSS) and Cu-Fe sulfide (ISS). Syn- and posteruptive phases occur in vesicles inboth lavas and tephra, and on surfaces of ash and along fractures. The mineral assemblages in lavas include Cu-Fe sulfide and Fe-Ti oxidein vesicles, and Fe sulfide and Cu-Fe sulfide in segregation vesicles. Assemblages in vesicles in scoria include Fe-Ti oxide and rare Fe-Cu-Sn sulfide. Vesicle fillings of Fe-Ti oxide, Ni-rich chromite, Fe sulfide, Cu sulfide, and barite are common to two pumice samples. Themost coarse-grained of the vesicle fillings are Cu-Fe sulfide and Cusulfide, which are as large as 50 5 in diameter. The youngest Plinian pumice also contains Zn(Fe) sulfide, as well as rare Ag-Cu sulfide,Ag-Fe sulfide, Ag bromide, Ag chloride, and Au-Cu telluride. The assemblage is similar to those typically observed in high-sulfidation epithermal mineralization. The fine-grained nature and abundance of syn- and/or posteruptive phases in porous rocks makes metals susceptibleto mobilization by percolating fluids. The abundance of metal compounds in vesicles indicates that volatile exsolution prior to and/or during eruption played an important role in releasing metals to the atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. The benefits of errors during training.

Abstract

Errors are generally not thought of as a positive thing - not in society at large, and especially not in forensic science. However, there is a large body of literature in the field of cognitive science (particularly from psychology and education research) that highlights the benefits that can be gained from using errors made in training to improve learning. Although none of these studies was done directly in the forensic science disciplines, there are nonetheless lessons to be learned about how errors may most effectively be used to maximize their benefits to learning. This article presents an overview of the literature on learning from errors and suggests principles that may be of benefit to forensic science today, as well as suggesting areas where specific research may be of benefit to forensic science in the future., (© 2022 The Authors. Experiments were conducted to quantify the effects of the sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) on root reductions and quantity of nitrate (NO(3) (-)) leached from 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass in lysimeters. Forty lysimeters were planted with 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass, of which 20 were inoculated with B. longicaudatus and 20 were noninoculated. Root length was compared between treatments at six, 12, and 18 weeks after initiation of the experiments. Turf was fertilized every three weeks, and leaching events were simulated at 21 and 42-day intervals in trial one and trial two, respectively. Leachate was collected, and the quantity of NO(3) (-) leached was compared between treatments. Root reductions were observed in lysimeters inoculated with B. longicaudatus at all evaluation dates. Quantity of NO(3) (-) leached was greater in inoculated lysimeters at the 18-week evaluation during both trials. This study indicates that nematode damage to turf roots limits root vigor and N uptake, thereby increasing nitrate leaching, adding to water quality concerns.
