Abstract

While analyzing data, researchers are often faced with missing values. This is especially common in longitudinal studies in which participants might skip assessments. Unwanted missing data can introduce bias in the results and should thus be handled appropriately. However, researchers can sometimes want to include missing values in their data collection design to reduce its length and cost, a method called ``planned missingness.'' This paper review the recommended practices for handling both planned and unplanned missing data, with a focus on longitudinal studies. The current guidelines suggest to either use Full Information Maximum Likelihood or Multiple Imputation. Those techniques are illustrated with R code in the context of a longitudinal study with a representative Canadian sample on the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

For those fleeing violent political conflict home-country politics may be uniquely challenging. Given the high stakes which refugees are more likely to engage in home country politics? This article focuses on two sets of factors: experiences of hardship in the context of emigration, transiting and settling to their destination country; and the ongoing social ties to family and friends left behind. For our analysis, we draw on a recently collected nationally representative survey of Syrian refugees in Canada (N = 1974). We find that among those resettled in Canada, experiences of hardships in Syria and while in transit in their interim country are associated with less engagement in the political affairs of Syria. On the other hand, those who have a harder time settling into life in Canada also tend to remain more interested in home-country politics. In contrast to some findings in research on labour migrants, those who maintain close personal ties to friends and family back in Syria remain more engaged with politics. Together, the findings highlight the unique pressures refugees face and the role these pressures may have on continued interest in the political affairs of their home country after migrating. Abstract

The secondary transfer effect (STE) of intergroup contact is a phenomenon whereby contact with one social group (i.e., primary outgroup) improves attitudes towards other social groups (i.e., secondary outgroups). We propose that contact has another, so far unconsidered and potentially harmful side-effect, that occurs when outgroups are perceived to be in conflict (antagonistic STE). In the presence of a conflict between the primary and secondary outgroups, positive (negative) contact with the primary outgroup is expected to have a negative (positive) effect on attitude towards the secondary outgroup. Our prior research suggests that outgroup conflict reduces or eliminates STEs, but evidence for antagonistic STEs has been limited. One explanation for the absence of antagonistic STEs in our prior research might be that the outgroup conflicts were not self-relevant enough (Tropp & Barlow, 2018) and that contact led to more positive attitudes but not solidarity with the primary outgroups (Kerr et al., 2017; Subašić et al., 2008). Prior research shows, for example, that solidarity is hugely influenced by what is said during intergroup interactions (Becker et al., 2013). In this study, we explore the role of the self-relevance of outgroup conflict by asking respondents not only about intergroup contact (frequency, valence) but also about outgroup friendships, the intimacy of outgroup friendships, conversation topics with outgroup friends (do intergroup friends talk about secondary outgroups?), and the attitudes of one’s outgroup friends towards secondary outgroups assuming all these factors are linked to greater self-investment and self-relevance of outgroup conflicts. As we focus on gay people and Muslims as two potentially conflicting outgroups, our respondents will be non-religious heterosexual Germans. We will test two scenarios: 1) the effect of contact with gay people on attitudes towards Muslims and 2) the effect of contact with Muslims on attitudes towards gay people.
