MXenese is a type of two-dimensional inorganic compound in materials science that is composed of transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides with several atomic layer thicknesses. Owing to the presence of hydroxyl groups or terminal oxygen groups on the surface of MXene materials, they exhibit metallic conductivity similar to that of transition metal carbides. Owing to their excellent optical, mechanical, electrothermal, and biocompatible properties, emerging 2D MXenes are widely used in biomedical fields such as tissue engineering, antimicrobial drugs, photothermal therapy, drug/gene delivery, sensing, and regenerative medicine. In this paper, we review the methods for synthesizing and modifying MXene-based composites, their research and application in stomatology, and their development prospects and challenges in the clinical application of tissue engineering. The biocompatibility and osteogenic properties of MXene and its nanocomposites have the potential to promote cell proliferation and bone regeneration. The anti-bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation properties can be applied to implant coating and prevent caries. The excellent photothermal, conductive, and mechanical sensitivity of this agent make it suitable for drug delivery, bio-photothermal therapy, immune signal sensing, and gene detection. On this basis, MXene has recently achieved outstanding results in the fields of stomatology, including bone tissue engineering, antimicrobial, drug delivery, physical and mechanical enhancement of dental biomaterials, oral cancer treatment, and periodontal disease monitoring. However, research on the prevention and treatment of refractory oral diseases has not yet been reported. At present, the properties and surface modification of MXene-based nanomaterials are relatively well understood. Future studies should focus on the dose-dependent biosafety, cellular and molecular mechanisms, and signaling pathways of MXene to fully exploit its unique advantages in oral clinical and tissue engineering fields.

Abstract Background Given today’s competitive climate, graduates in stomatology face the dilemma of deciding whether to pursue higher education, obtain a master’s degree, or focus on clinical careers. However, their career planning tendencies and decision-making factors have not been clarified. This study aimed to analyze these aspects among stomatology undergraduate students at the Southwest Medical University (SWMU) in China. Methods This cross-sectional study between July and August 2022 included undergraduate students majoring in stomatology at SWMU. A cross-sectional online questionnaire was used to gather data on the respondents’ plans after graduation. The questionnaire included inquiries into their intentions regarding postgraduate education and standardized training. Additionally, the survey explored whether the respondents preferred academic or professional master’s degrees, which stomatology subspecialty they preferred, and the factors that influenced their choices. Results One hundred dental undergraduate students participated in this survey. Results indicated that 91.0% of respondents chose to pursue a master’s degree after graduation. Moreover, 80.2% of the respondents chose the professional master rather than the academic master as their first choice. Orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and oral implantology were the top three subspecialties that students preferred. Personal interest, expected revenue, and family suggestions were the main factors influencing subspecialty selection. Conclusions The study reveals that stomatology undergraduate students face challenges and a dilemma at graduation. Due to the fierce competition in the job market, graduates aspire to pursue postgraduate studies instead of entering the workforce immediately after graduation. Students need to understand the employment landscape in oral medicine and familiarize themselves with the work patterns of various subspecialties while remaining flexible in charting their career paths.

In recent years, Romania's stomatology private practice sector has seen substantial growth, with many dentists fully committing to building and expanding their own practices, often funded by their personal income. This study aimed to explore how various postures affect the muscle groups of dentists (380), particularly focusing on identifying positions that may jeopardize their musculoskeletal health. A group of dentists effectively participated in this study (10), adhering to their regular work routines while wearing wearable sensors on their backs to monitor posture and activity. The data gathered from these sensors were analyzed using the RULA (rapid upper-limb assessment) and REBA (rapid entire-body assessment) tools. The findings indicated that the head and shoulder movements during dental procedures involved considerable and repetitive angular shifts, which could strain the neck and back muscles and heighten the risk of musculoskeletal problems. Additionally, the standing postures adopted by the dentists were associated with an increased risk of postural issues and greater overall fatigue. Extended periods of trunk and head tilting were also identified as contributing factors to posture-related challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research has highlighted potential benefits of vitamin C in managing periodontal diseases, yet systematic reviews to consolidate these findings are scarce. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin C supplementation in preventing and treating periodontal diseases and elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying these effects. We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, searching three databases up to 13 April 2024, for studies from 2010 onward. Our selection criteria aimed to capture a wide range of studies regarding vitamin C's impact on periodontal health. After rigorous screening, 16 studies were included in the final analysis. Meta-analysis techniques were employed to synthesize data and evaluate the association between vitamin C intake and periodontal disease outcomes. The meta-analysis included 17,853 participants from studies with diverse geographical and demographic settings. Notable findings indicated that higher vitamin C intake was associated with a reduction in periodontal disease risk, with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 1.52 (95% CI: 1.49–1.55). The individual studies reported ORs ranging from 0.62 (95% CI: 0.38–0.94) indicating significant protective effects, to 1.66 (95% CI: 1.04–2.64), suggesting increased risks associated with inadequate vitamin C levels. The heterogeneity among the studies was high (I2 = 95.46%), reflecting variability in study design and population characteristics. This systematic review confirms that vitamin C supplementation has a beneficial effect on periodontal health. The significant variability across studies suggests that individual dietary needs and baseline vitamin C levels might influence the effectiveness of supplementation. These findings underscore the importance of personalized nutritional guidance as part of comprehensive periodontal care. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to better understand the causal relationships and potential confounding factors affecting the link between vitamin C intake and periodontal health. Background: To study and compare the effects of clear aligners without brackets and traditional fixed aligners in orthodontic treatment. Methods: The samples were collected from January 2022 to April 2023. The control group (n = 26) received orthodontic treatment using traditional fixed appliances. The research group (n = 20) received orthodontic treatment using the clear aligners without brackets. Compare the therapeutic effects and related evaluation indicators between two groups. Results: The total effective ratio was compared between the 2 groups, and the study group was greater(P < 0.05). After treatment, the detected values of the periodontal condition indicators (plaque index, debris index, and gingival bleeding index), serum inflammatory factors (CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α) of the two groups, were less than before, also were all less than the control group. (P < 0.05). After therapy, in comparison of the control group, the value of mastication efficiency, comfort and psychological evaluation, sleep indicators and the points of the four dimensions of life quality in the study group was greater, and the detection results were obviously greater than before(P < 0.05). Conclusion: In the orthodontic therapy of sufferers with malocclusion, compared with the traditional fixed appliance, the clear aligners without brackets can enhance the treatment effects, improve the periodontal condition and masticatory function, and reduce the inflammatory responses, so that patients can feel more comfortable, thereby improving their psychology, sleep and quality of life. In the future, with the continual advancement of technology and people's pursuit of beauty, the application of clear aligners without brackets in orthodontic treatment will become more and more extensive. The continuous introduction of new materials and new technologies will further improve the effects and comfort of the clear aligners without brackets, reduce treatment time and discomfort, and also reduce patients' resistance to aligners, bringing patients a better treatment experience. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI), such as image recognition and fixed-point and digital scanning, has been increasingly applied in dental orthodontics. ChatGPT is an emerging artificial intelligence technology that has attracted a considerable amount of attention from people of all walks of life since its introduction. This paper discusses the application potential of ChatGPT in the field of orthodontics from two perspectives—education and clinical practice—and analyzes its limitations. Current reports show that ChatGPT can improve the efficiency of teaching in orthodontic education as well as assist users in completing medical mock exams training, writing papers and conducting academic research, etc. In the clinic, ChatGPT can be used to engage patients in medical dialog, simplify clinical procedures and improve diagnostic and treatment efficiency. However, because ChatGPT is still in the early stages of research and application, there are problems such as insufficient data, inaccurate answers, and poor academic ethics and privacy. In the future, additional studies, training and optimization are needed to ensure the safety, ethics and benefit of AI, laying the foundation for improving the use of AI in the field of orthodontics.

- Abstract
Aim: Today, there is a lack of research studies concerning human acute exposure to nanoparticles (NPs). Our investigation aimed to simulate real-world acute inhalation exposure to NPs released during work with dental nanocomposites in a dental office or technician laboratory. Methods: Blood samples from female volunteers were processed before and after inhalation exposure. Transcriptomic mRNA and miRNA expression changes were analyzed. Results: We detected large interindividual variability, 90 significantly deregulated mRNAs, and 4 miRNAs when samples of participants before and after dental nanocomposite grinding were compared. Conclusion: The results suggest that inhaled dental NPs may present an occupational hazard to human health, as indicated by the changes in the processes related to oxidative stress, synthesis of eicosanoids, and cell division. We searched for a possible impact of acute inhalation exposure to nanoparticles (NPs) released during the grinding of dental nanocomposites used for teeth reconstruction. The exposure design utilized in our study simulated the acute exposure of the dental staff to the NPs. Our research fills the gaps in knowledge in the field of acute human inhalation exposure to dental nanocomposites. Results indicate that the impact of exposure to NPs is dependent on the style of working as well as on the interindividual biological variability among study subjects. Changes in expression levels of genes associated with an increase of oxidative stress, synthesis of eicosanoids (signaling molecules related to e.g., immune responses), and cell division were detected. All the observed changes may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, carcinogenesis, or problems during pregnancy. Occupational exposure to inhaled NPs, including those generated in dental practice can pose a significant health risk, and protective measures when working with these materials should be considered. More research is needed to compare our results with chronic (long-term) exposure to similar materials to show the hazards related to their inhalation. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT Article highlights The experimental design simulated the work of dental personnel during teeth repair. The study investigated the possible impact of acute inhalation exposure to nanoparticles (NPs) released during the grinding of dental nanocomposites on transcriptome changes. Analyses of the differential mRNA and miRNA expression were performed. Large interindividual variability in gene expression changes after exposure was detected. Significant deregulation of DDIT4, PER1, and GPR124 was detected when sampling was compared after and before exposure. Deregulation of hsa-miR-15b-5p, hsa-miR-6861-3p, hsa-miR-548o-3p, and hsa-miR-3913-5p was observed when comparing post- and pre-shift sampling. Individual occupational health risks to NP exposure led to the alteration of several biological pathways. Increased oxidative stress, synthesis of eicosanoids, or cell division may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurogenerative disorders, and carcinogenesis after NP exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Drugs in the family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics (NSAIDs) can cause adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and drug-drug interactions, hence the importance for the stomatologist to know how to prescribe and use each drug rationally. Currently, there is no information on the pharmacovigilance actions of analgesics that are the responsibility of the stomatologist, so the objective of this research was to explore the pharmacovigilance actions carried out by clinical teachers in stomatology. Materials and methods: For the purposes of this study, a 23-question questionnaire derived from the Mexican Official Standard NOM-220-SSA1-2016 on pharmacovigilance actions of analgesics was constructed. Google forms were used in a self-administered manner. Results: 67.56% of the participants (n=37) were female. Regarding years of experience they have a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 42 (M=13.36, SD=8.2). Most of the teachers (64.86%) monitor the analgesics they prescribe; however, 86.66% of the participants have never detected an Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) and 70% do not monitor the possible pharmacological interactions of the prescribed analgesics. Conclusion: There is a need for updating and educational initiatives in pharmacovigilance in stomatology, monitoring analgesic prescription patterns, developing prescription guidelines to ensure that patients receive the most effective treatment for their oral pain, and structuring a protocol in accordance with current standards for the reporting of ADRs and the recording of drug interactions. - Abstract
Objective Subject and Methods Results Conclusions To analyze trends of antibiotic consumption and expenditure in Chinese stomatology hospitals between 2014 and 2018 with a longitudinal study design, and show the impacts of the comprehensive policy on dental antibiotic use in China.Consumption was quantified as the number of daily defined doses (DDDs) and expenditure as the procurement costs, using medical institutions' drug procurement data from the Chinese Monitoring Network for Rational Use of Drugs. Descriptive statistics was employed and the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) was calculated to show the average annual growth rate.Between 2014 and 2018, overall antibiotic consumption increased from 842.6 thousand DDDs to 1376.7 thousand DDDs (p < 0.001) and expenditure increased from 11.6 million RMB to 20.9 million RMB (p < 0.001), where other β‐lactam antibacterials accounted for the largest proportion of total consumption (37.1%–50.1%) and expenditure (52.9%–66.6%), and also increase the largest (CAGR = 18.4%, p < 0.001). The proportion of oral antibiotics was nearly 9 times of parenteral antibiotics in consumption (CAGR = 0.3%, p = 0.023) and only 2 times in expenditure (CAGR = −1.7%, p = 0.112). The non‐restricted group accounted for more than 90% of consumption (CAGR = 0.6%, p < 0.001). In 2018, oral first‐generation cephalosporins (22.8%), oral imidazole derivatives (22.3%), and oral second‐generation cephalosporins (19.2%) were the most frequently used antibiotic classification, while parenteral second‐generation cephalosporins were top one (19.8%) for expenditure. At chemical substance levels, the consumption of oral cefradine ranked top one (21.4%) and parenteral cefuroxime accounted for the largest proportion of expenditure (14.5%) in 2018. Oral cefradine, oral metronidazole, and oral cefaclor were the top three frequently consumed antibiotics throughout the five years.Despite the potential antibiotic overuse, the comprehensive antibiotic stewardship regulations of China got a satisfactory and better performance in dental practices. More effort is needed to establish more explicit guidelines to improve antibiotic stewardship, such as priority recommending amoxicillin and its derivatives for endodontic infections. - Abstract
Objective Methods Results Conclusion This study evaluated the influence of a single educational intervention on the perception and knowledge of strategies for communicating oral cancer diagnoses.A educational intervention, 72 dentists and 41 dental undergraduates participated in the ‘Maio Vermelho Project’, a continuing education activity. Participants completed a 14‐question online questionnaire concerning their experiences and perceptions of delivering difficult news. The educational intervention featured an interview illustrating the SPIKES protocol, broadcast on YouTube.Participants had a mean age of 40 years. A minority (21.2%) had encountered or experienced communicating an oral cancer diagnosis. Exposure to lectures on this topic during their education was uncommon (22.1%) but more prevalent among students. After the intervention, confidence in communicating a cancer diagnosis (29.2%) and addressing the patient's family (30.1%) in line with the SPIKES protocol increased.A training deficit persists in delivering cancer diagnoses, highlighting the need for educational interventions to empower students and professionals in this critical procedure. Integration of this topic into the dental undergraduate curriculum is imperative. Clinical Relevance: Effectively communicating a cancer diagnosis poses challenges to healthcare professionals, impacting treatment outcomes. Implementing educational interventions ensures that professionals are well prepared to navigate this complex task, ultimately improving patient care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The use of natural products as alternatives to traditional pharmacological treatments in orthodontics is gaining interest due to their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of natural products in reducing inflammation and bacterial presence in orthodontic and orthognathic treatment settings. The database search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Embase up to January 2024. The review focused on randomized controlled trials only. The selected studies centered on the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects of natural products, adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for data extraction. Nine studies, totaling 358 participants, were included. Significant findings demonstrated a reduction in gingival inflammation by over 40% with the use of Aloe vera compared to chlorhexidine. Another study noted a decrease in bleeding on probing by 13.6 points in the treatment group over placebo. Additionally, honey showed a rapid modulation of plaque pH and significantly reduced bacterial counts of Streptococcus mutans. Furthermore, the use of resveratrol emulgel was linked to substantial improvements in gingival health, with a reduction in the gingival index and probing pocket depth. The results indicate that natural products can significantly enhance orthodontic treatment outcomes by reducing inflammation and bacterial levels. These products offer effective alternatives to traditional treatments and show potential for integration into routine orthodontic care protocols. Further research is encouraged to standardize application methods and dosages to maximize clinical benefits and patient satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sleep bruxism, characterized by involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep, poses significant challenges in management due to its potential to induce temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) and other related symptoms. The use of Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT-A), also known as Botox
® , has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BoNT-A in the management of sleep bruxism, focusing on pain reduction, improvement in jaw function, reduction in bruxism episodes, and the incidence of adverse effects. An exhaustive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases up to January 2024, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines. Nine randomized clinical trials (RCTs) involving 137 participants were analyzed for efficacy and safety outcomes. The studies demonstrated a significant reduction in mean pain scores (from 7.1 to 0.2 at 6 months and 1 year post-treatment in one study) and a notable decrease in the number of bruxism events (from 4.97/h to 1.70/h in the BoNT-A group in another study). Additionally, improvements were observed in jaw stiffness and total sleep time. Adverse effects varied but were generally mild and transient, including injection site pain in 20% of participants in one study and cosmetic changes in smile in 15.4% of patients in another. These findings suggest that BoNT-A injections may provide some benefits for treating nocturnal bruxism, potentially reducing TMD symptoms like pain and improving jaw function. However, these findings are preliminary due to variability in study designs and the absence of detailed statistical analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

BACKGROUND: Cerium (Ce) is the most abundant element among lanthanides, which is mostly in the form of ceria. The reversible transformation between Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions contributes to the high redox activity of cerium. Because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, osteogenic, angiogenic and anti-tumor properties, cerium has been widely used in stomatology. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, osteogenic, angiogenic and anti-tumor mechanism of cerium, and to review the research status and application prospects of cerium and cerium-based materials in the modification of oral materials and the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in recent years. METHODS: The articles published from database inception to 2023 were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed, CNKI and WanFang databases with the search terms “cerium, ceria, prosthodontics, prosthesis, restorative dentistry, denture, dental implant, caries, endodontics, pulpitis, periodontitis, periodontal diseases, oral cancer” in English and “cerium, ceria, prosthodontics, implant, dental caries, dental pulp, periodontitis, periodontal disease, oral cancer” in Chinese. By analyzing and reading literature for screening, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 73 articles were finally included in this review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) Cerium exerts an antibacterial effect through direct contact with bacteria, oxidative stress and destroying bacterial biofilm, and exerts an anti-inflammatory function based on mimetic enzyme activity. The osteogenic and angiogenic activities of cerium involve a series of signaling pathways including ERK and Wnt signaling pathways. (2) Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, osteogenic, and angiogenic activities allow cerium significant potential in the treatment of oral infectious diseases and regeneration of oral soft and hard tissues. However, there is still a certain gap in the application of cerium’s anti-tumor properties in the oral field. (3) Due to excellent mechanical properties and a low light-transmitting property, ceria-stabilized zirconia as a dental ceramic material can be used for core ceramics, the frameworks of dental prostheses and dental implants. (4) Benefited from its biological properties, cerium-based materials have the ability to promote osseointegration and soft tissue integration, inhibit demineralization and cariogenic bacteria, facilitate regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex, lessen inflammatory response and enhance periodontal tissue regeneration. There are wide applications of cerium in surface modifications of implants and treatments of caries, pulpitis, periodontitis and oral cancers. (5) Cerium shows certain toxicity under conditions of high concentration and long-term administration. To further expand clinical applications of cerium in dentistry, biosafety and optimization of cerium-based materials need to be further explored in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate stomatological students’ learning efficacy and their attitude towards Lecture-Team-Based Learning (LTBL) on topics regarding the design of removable partial dentures via in-class, online, and both in combination. Methods Students from seven distinct grades participated in the course in their fourth academic year (Years 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021). Students of Years 2015–2019 attended in-class LTBL, students of Year 2020 attended online LTBL, and students of Year 2021 attended the combination mode. The scores of three examinations were compared, namely, individual readiness assessment test, team readiness assurance test, and individual application test. Visual Analog Scales (VAS) were used for students to self-assess their mastery of prosthodontics knowledge before and after the course. Anonymous questionnaires were delivered to evaluate their satisfaction with LTBL via a Likert scale. Results In each academic year, the three exam scores were significantly improved as the course progressed and VAS-post scores were significantly higher than VAS-pre scores. The three examination and VAS scores of students in Year 2020 were significantly lower than those in Years 2019 and 2021. Students were highly satisfied with the LTBL course based on the three parameters of knowledge acquisition, teamwork, and classroom atmosphere. Conclusion Students were highly satisfied with the LTBL course and their learning performance was improved as the course progressed both in-class and online. Online LTBL could be adopted when students have to study online, while in-class LTBL could perform better when combined with video records of an online LTBL course.

Purpose: Dentists spend a long time the day in the position. It is possible that this leads to discomfort that may translate to procedural errors during treatment, such as root canal treatment. This study aims to investigate the relationship of working posture and procedural errors in endodontic manipulations. Materials and Methods: 32 dentists (17 men, 53.13%, and 15 women, 46.88%) from the University Dental Polyclinic of Uzhhorod National University (Uzhhorod, Ukraine) were included in the study. REBA, RULA, frequency of procedural errors were analysed using regression. Results: This study revealed a surprising trend where a decrease in errors during endodontic treatment was associated with higher RULA and REBA scores, contrary to the expected increase in errors with higher ergonomic stress. Additionally, the research highlighted the significant impact of a dentist's handedness and tooth position in the dental arch on treatment ergonomics and efficiency, as observed and analyzed through ergonomic assessments and statistical methods. Conclusions: The study conclusively demonstrated that optimal positioning and alignment during dental procedures significantly contribute to a reduction in procedural errors, underscoring the importance of ergonomics in clinical dentistry.

This systematic review critically evaluates the association between serum Vitamin D levels and dental caries incidence in the permanent teeth of children and adolescents. The search strategy comprised three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase), up to November 2023, targeting studies on the correlation between Vitamin D and dental caries in permanent dentition. The eligibility criteria focused on observational studies involving children and adolescents aged 12 to 19 years with permanent dentition. The screening process, guided by the PRISMA guidelines and the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale for quality assessment, resulted in the inclusion of eight studies conducted across various global regions from 2013 to 2023. The analysis revealed that Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were prevalent among the study populations, ranging from 17.3% to 69.4%. Specifically, children and adolescents with Vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L) were found to have significantly higher odds of developing caries, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 1.13 to 2.57. Conversely, two studies indicated a protective effect of higher Vitamin D levels, with an OR of 0.80 and 0.59, respectively, for caries among children and adolescents with serum levels ≥ 50 nmol/L, suggesting an inverse relationship between Vitamin D status and caries risk. The results indicate both the protective role of adequate serum levels of Vitamin D above 20 ng/mL and the increased risk associated with insufficient levels below this threshold. However, the variations in study quality, methodologies and geographic settings underscore the challenges in drawing universal conclusions. Despite these limitations, our review suggests that improving Vitamin D status could be a beneficial component of preventive strategies against dental caries in children and adolescents, warranting further research to clarify the clinical significance of our findings. BackgroundThe psychological status of Chinese postgraduate students majoring in stomatology after the COVID-19 restrictions still remains unclear. The objective of this study is to evaluate the mental status through a cross-sectional survey and gather related theoretical evidence for psychological intervention on postgraduate students majoring in stomatology.MethodsAn online survey was administered, and subjective well-being, anxiety, stress and depression symptoms were assessed using the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5), item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively, wherein suicidal ideation and sleep-related problems were measured with PHQ-9 and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI).ResultsA total of 208 participants who completed one questionnaire were considered as valid. It was found that female respondents generally exhibited significantly higher levels of PSS-10, PHQ-9, and GAD-7 scores and shorter physical activity hours than male students. Students from rural areas demonstrated significantly higher levels of PHQ-9, suicidal ideation, and less portion of good or fair family economic support. Additionally, individuals from only-child families reported increased levels of activity hours (1.78 ± 2.07, p = 0.045) and a higher portion (55.10%, p = 0.007) of having clear future plan as compared with multiple-child families. The risk factors for anxiety symptoms (GAD-7 score) were higher scores of PSS-10 (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.09–1.22), PHQ-9 (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.22–1.49), and ISI-7 (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.06–1.23), while owning a clear graduation plan was the protective factor (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.31–0.98). Moreover, the risk factors for depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) included PSS-10 (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.04–1.16), GAD-7 (OR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.25–1.52), suicidal ideation (OR = 5.66, 95% CI = 3.37–9.51), and ISI-7 (OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.09–1.25). Approximately 98.08% of Chinese postgraduates studying stomatology reported experiencing at least moderate stress after the COVID-19 restrictions.ConclusionWithin the limitations of this study, senior students were more inclined to stress, while anxiety symptoms were related to severer levels of stress, depression, and insomnia. Depressive symptoms were associated with higher levels of stress, anxiety, insomnia, suicidal ideation, and lower levels of self-reported well-being. Thus, psychological interventions for postgraduates should be timely and appropriately implemented by strengthening well-being, reasonably planning for the future, and good physique, thereby mitigating the psychological issues after COVID-19 restrictions.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of electrolytic and nonelectrolytic toothbrushing on dogs’ oral health and the presence of common bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease in dogs is a common problem worldwide. A toothbrushing procedure is recommended to prevent periodontal disease, with additional benefits if electrolytic toothbrushes are used in dog oral hygiene practices. A total of 26 dogs were enrolled in this eight-week study and were divided into two groups—treatment and control. Daily toothbrushing was performed on all dogs using the same dog toothbrush, with the power source disengaged in the control group. Oral examination was conducted on anesthetized dogs before and at 4 and 8 weeks after commencing the study, with sampling for bacterial analysis. This study was designed to be blind for owners, veterinarians, and laboratory staff. Improvements in the average gingival index (from 0.55 to 0.31) and calculus index (from 0.55 to 0.38) in the treatment group were recorded. In the control group, after an initial improvement in the plaque index (from 0.97 to 0.53), at week 8, it significantly rose to 1.21 (p < 0.05). Relative bacterial abundance revealed a reduction in all four tested bacteria in the treatment group, while in the control group, Campylobacter rectus levels rose by 3.67 log2 compared to before the study and at week 8. No adverse effects were recorded in either group.

Cheilitis is a relatively common lip disease with many etiologies and causes including concomitant mucocutaneous or systemic diseases, which needs multidisciplinary communication. The purpose of this study was to compare the scientometric characteristics of cheilitis publications by multidisciplinary specialists. All the papers on cheilitis were comprehensively retrieved from the Scopus database, and divided into three groups (dermatologists, stomatologists, and other scholars). There were 478 and 241 papers on cheilitis published by dermatologists and stomatologists, respectively. The total citation count was 5838 and the h index was 36 for cheilitis publications by dermatologists, and the total count was 2983 and the h index was 27 for cheilitis publications by stomatologists. Interestingly, we observed that dermatologists preferentially concerned contact cheilitis/dermatitis and plasma cell cheilitis, while stomatologists preferentially concerned cheilitis-related lip neoplasms including squamous cell carcinoma, dysplasia, and precancerous conditions. The most common disorder researched by both dermatologists and stomatologists was actinic cheilitis. The keywords such as patch test, cosmetic, edema, drug efficacy, toothpaste, lipstick, allergens, and granulomatous inflammation were common in dermatologists' publications; while the keywords such as protein expression, metabolism, risk factor, prevalence, malignant transformation, and carcinogenesis were common in stomatologists' publications. This study for the first time reported the scientometric characteristics of cheilitis as an interdisciplinary disease researched by specialists. It highlights that cheilitis-related specialists through reciprocal collaboration and communication will improve the patients' outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To investigate the current situation of using virtual simulation technology in undergraduate schools of stomatology in China, analyze the problems and put forward corresponding improvement suggestions. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 672 teachers and 3 849 students in undergraduate schools of stomatology in China. Results 25.81% of all participants had took part in dental virtual simulation courses, and 37.80% of the participants from “Double First-Class” universities had participated in dental virtual simulation courses. 92.12% of the virtual simulation courses were established for undergraduates. "Traditional course + virtual simulation model demonstration" is the main teaching form of virtual simulation courses. Most of the participants were satisfied with the virtual simulation courses offered by their schools. At present, there are also some deficiencies in the virtual simulation courses, such as lack of teaching resources, insufficient interaction and simulation. Conclusion There is difference in the application of virtual simulation technology in undergraduate schools of stomatology in China. The virtual simulation technology is more widely used in "Double First-Class" universities than in ordinary universities. Undergraduates are the main teaching objects of virtual simulation courses. Stomatological schools in China should pay attention to the development and utilization of virtual simulation curriculum resources by cooperation, enrich the form of virtual simulation courses and strengthen the promotion and application of virtual simulation technology in stomatological education.

Sleep bruxism, characterized by involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep, poses significant challenges in management due to its potential to induce temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) and other related symptoms. The use of Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT-A), also known as Botox®, has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention.

ABSTRACTBackground Aging, uninsured, underserved, ethnic/racial minority groups and residents of rural areas are most vulnerable to suffering from a lack of access to health care. These populations experience delays in diagnosis and treatment, making treatment more difficult and expensive.Case Description In as much as the mouth is critical to overall health and quality of life, resources are needed to reduce these disparities and find ways to integrate the practice of dentistry and medicine. The specialty of oral medicine is one venue of opportunity. This paper aims to share the importance of oral medicine specialists in bridging the gap between medicine and dentistry and managing patients using a safety-net dental clinic.Practical Implications The authors present a case that provides insights into “vulnerable” populations, access to care, the importance of early diagnosis, and how safety-net clinics play an important role, especially during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, in providing oral health care to a community in need.Continuing Education Credit Available: The practice worksheet is available as supplemental material for this article: https://doi.org/10.1080/19424396.2023.2174659.A CDA Continuing Education quiz is online for this article: https://www.cdapresents360.com/learn/catalog/view/20
