1. The Effect of Self-Concept, Self-Disclosure, and Type of Basic Speech Course on Communication Apprehension.

Abstract

Approximately 150 college students participated in a study that investigated the effects of self-concept, self-disclosure, and type of basic speech course on communication apprehension. The subjects were drawn from three basic speech course populations at two universities. They had been free to enroll in either a public speaking, interpersonal communication, or small group communication course. All three courses required oral presentations. After the first week of each course, the subjects were administered a communication apprehension instrument and four separate instruments designed to measure self-concept and self-disclosure. Results showed negative correlations between both self-concept and self-disclosure and communication apprehension. Findings indicated also that the type of speech course did not significantly affect apprehension. (FL)

2. Conceptual Divisions Within the Speech Communication Association.

Abstract

This paper specifically discusses the differing methods by which certain conceptual divisions in the field of speech communication have been determined. Classifying the various conceptual approaches as (1) definitional analyses, (2) structural approaches, (3) research classifications, and (4) approaches reflecting a combination of these three, the author briefly reviews the major contributions made by speech professionals which establish some outline of the conceptual concerns of the discipline. He provides a detailed examination of the efforts of the national association, the cataloging system devised by Borden, and the SCA information retrieval system (SCAIRS), enumerating the divisional concerns stated by each. This article describes the processes involved in the development of an information retrieval system for the Speech Communication Association. It attempts to show the use of the computer in several phases of this development. Essentially, the steps involved in this process are: 1. Delimit the concepts being used in the data base. 2. Organize these concepts into a faceted thesaurus. 3. Index the abstracts in the data base with the appropriate concepts. 4. Create a computer system that will retrieve abstracts indexed with the descriptor terms. The system is now operational, and the data base and thesaurus are being continuously up-dated.
