Abstract

We demonstrate coincidence measurements of spatially entangled photons by means of a novel type of multi-pixel based detection array. The adopted sensor is a fully digital 8$\times$16 silicon photomultiplier array allowing not only photon counting but also per-pixel time stamping of the arrived photons with a resolution of 65 ps. Together with a frame rate of 500 kfps, this property exceeds the capabilities of conventional charge-coupled device cameras which have become of growing interest for the detection of transversely correlated photon pairs. The sensor is used to measure a second-order correlation function for various non-collinear configurations of entangled photons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The experimental results are compared to theory.

Abstract

The fabrication of Avalanche Photodiode (APD) in a standard 0.35-[micro]m CMOS technology is described. The analysis of the noise properties of a pixel based on the proposed photodiode with charge-amplifier readout has shown that it can have an improved noise performance with respect to a standard photodiode-based pixel.

Abstract

A 64-pixel linear array aimed at 3-D vision applications is implemented in a high-voltage 0.8[micro]m CMOS technology. The detection of the incident light signals is performed using photodiodes biased above breakdown voltage so that an extremely high sensitivity can be achieved exploiting the intrinsic multiplication effect of the avalanche phenomenon. Each 38 x 180-[micro][m.sup.2] pixel includes, besides the single photon avalanche diode, a dedicated read-out circuit for the arrival-time estimation of incident light pulses. To increase the distance measurement resolution a multiple pulse measurement is used, extracting the mean value of the light pulse arrival-time directly in each pixel; this innovative approach dramatically reduces the dead-time of the pixel read-out, allowing a high frame rate imaging to be achieved. The sensor array provides a range map from 2 m to 5 m with a precision better than [+ or -] 0.75% without any external averaging operation. Moreover, with the same chip, we have explored for the first time the implementation of an indirect time-of-flight measurement by operating the proposed active pixel in the photon counting mode. Abstract

A prototype of a 34 x 34 pixel image sensor, implementing real-time analog image processing, is presented. Edge detection, motion detection, image amplification, and dynamic-range boosting are executed at pixel level by means of a highly interconnected pixel architecture based on the absolute value of the difference among neighbor pixels. The analog operations are performed over a kernel of 3 x 3 pixels. The square pixel, consisting of 30 transistors, has a pitch of 35 [micro]m with a fill-factor of 20%. The chip was fabricated in a 0.35 [micro]m CMOS technology, and its power consumption is 6 mW with 3.3 V power supply. The device was fully characterized and achieves a dynamic range of 50 dB with a light power density of 150 nW/m[m.sup.2] and a frame rate of 30 frame/s. The measured fixed pattern noise corresponds to 1.1% of the saturation level. The sensor's dynamic range can be extended up to 96 dB using the double-sampling technique. Abstract

Quantum imaging uses entangled photons to overcome the limits of a classical-light apparatus in terms of image quality, beating the standard shot-noise limit, and exceeding the Abbe diffraction limit for resolution. In today experiments, the spatial properties of entangled photons are recorded by means of complex and slow setups that include either the motorized scanning of single-pixel single-photon detectors, such as Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMT) or Silicon Photo- Multipliers (SiPM), or the use of low frame rate intensified CCD cameras. CMOS arrays of Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD) represent a relatively recent technology that may lead to simpler setups and faster acquisition.
