Egyptian Faience, a revolutionary innovation in ancient ceramics, was used for crafting various objects, including amulets, vessels, ornaments, and funerary figurines, like shabtis. Despite extensive research, many aspects of ancient shabti production technology, chemistry and mineralogy remain relatively understudied from the 21st to the 22nd Dynasty, belonging to a recovered 19th-century private collection. The fragments' origin is tentatively identified in the middle Nile valley in the Luxor area. Our study focused on a modest yet compositionally interesting small collection of shabti fragments to provide information on the glaze's components and shabti's core. We found that the core is a quartz and K-feldspars silt blended with an organic component made of plastic resins and vegetable fibres soaked with natron. The studied shabti figurines, after being modelled, dried, and covered with coloured glaze, were subjected to a firing process. Sodium metasilicate and sulphate compounds formed upon contact of the glaze with the silica matrix, forming a shell that holds together the fragile inner matrix. The pigments dissolved in the sodic glaze glass, produced by quartz, K-feldspars, and natron frit, are mainly manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) compounds. The ratio Cu2O/CaO > 5 produces a blue colour; if <5, the glaze is green. In some cases, Mg and As may have been added to produce a darker brown and an intense blue, respectively. Reaction minerals provided information on the high-temperature firing process that rapidly vitrified the glaze. This research delves into the investigation of a ceramic sample discovered in the southern sector of the Durrës Amphitheatre, with a primary focus on comprehending its composition, origin, and cultural importance. The sample reveals similarities with protostonepaste through meticulous chemical analysis, yet a more profound correlation with protostonepaste concerning normative composition. Despite its porcelain-like external appearance, the ceramic demonstrates chemical consistency with a finely balanced amalgamation of crushed kaolinised leucogranite, frits, and talc, accounting for a dominant proportion of 60% compared to the other constituents. Our findings suggest that the ceramic traces its origin to Iran, specifically the Kashan and Qamsar areas, dating back to the twelfth century. The geological attributes of the region have significantly influenced the choice of raw materials for producing high-temperature ceramics. Additionally, the presence of arsenic and cobalt in the glaze further corroborates its Iranian provenance. This discovery significantly accentuates Durrës' pivotal role as a crucial conduit for East–West interactions, including its historical ties with Venice. Trade links between Durrës and Syrian–Iranian area were established as early as the tenth century. Furthermore, the analysed ceramic fragment was unearthed within a layer corresponding to a period of abandonment within the productive context. This period dates to the late twelfth century—early thirteenth century. Vesuvius is a high-risk volcano and the 1631 Plinian eruption is a reference event for the next episode of explosive unrest. A complete stratigraphic and petrographic description of 1631 pyroclastics is given in this study. During the 1631 eruption a phonolite was firstly erupted followed by a tephritic phonolite and finally a phonolitic tephrite, indicating a layered magma chamber. We suggest that phonolitic basanite is a good candidate to be the primitive parental-melt of the 1631 eruption. Composition of apatite from the 1631 pyroclastics is different from those of CO2-rich melts indicating negligible CO2 content during magma evolution. Cross checking calculations, using PETROGRAPH and PELE software, accounts for multistage evolution up to phonolite starting from a phonolitic basanite melt similar to the Vesuvius medieval lavas. The model implies crystal settling of clinopyroxene and olivine at 6 kbar and 1220°C, clinopyroxene plus leucite at a pressure ranging from 2.5 to 0.5 kbar and temperature ranging from 1140 to 940°C. Inside the phonolitic magma chamber K-feldspar and leucite would coexist at a temperature ranging from from 940 to 840°C and at a pressure ranging from 2.5 to0.5 kbar. Thus crystal fractionation is certainly a necessary and probably a sufficient condition to evolve the melt from phono tephritic to phonolitic in the 1631 magma chamber. We speculate that phonolitic tephrite magma refilling from deeper levels destabilised the chamber and triggered the eruption, as testified by the seismic precursor phenomena before 1631 unrest.

Volcanic activity at Mt. Vulture lasted about 750 ka and produced Si[O.sub.2]-undersaturated volcanic rocks that can be classified as old (~700 ka), intermediate (~600-550 ka), and young (~130 ka). The intermediate deposits consist of pyroclastic falls and flows and lavas with compositions ranging from phonolite to foidite. A recent revision of the stratigraphic setting allowed these deposits to be classified into one synthem (the Barile Synthem) and further subdivided into four subsynthems (Toppo S. Paolo, Rionero, Vulture-S. Michele, and Ventaruolo). In the present investigation, trioctahedral micas from sample VUT 191 in the Vulture-S. Michele Subsynthem are considered. The host rock has modal diopside (20.2%), analcime (22.8%), plagioclase (27.8%), hauyne (5%), phlogopite (8.9%), and magnetite (6.3%). The micas were studied using chemical (EPMA, C-H-N, SIMS), structural (SCXRD), and spectroscopic (Mossbauer) methods. EPMA of 36 crystals from thin sections and 6 discrete crystals selected for the structural analysis showed remarkable compositional variability, as follows (in wt%): Si[O.sub.2] = 33.14-38.01, [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] = 15.56-20.45, MgO = 13.[O.sup.2-]20.81, Fe[O.sub.tot] = 6.34-14.08, Ti[O.sub.2] = 2.34-6.02, [K.sub.2]O = 6.03-9.48, [Na.sub.2]O = 0.50-0.78, and BaO = 0.89-4.06; all crystals proved to be phlogopite. Elemental C-H-N analyses yielded [H.sub.2]O = 2.86 [+ or -] 0.36 wt%. The water content was also determined by SIMS on two single crystals, labeled VUT 191_2 and VUT 191_19, which yielded values of 3.81 [+ or -] 0.12 and 1.72 [+ or -] 0.08 wt% [H.sub.2]O, respectively. Mossbauer investigation showed that all the iron in VUT191 mica is octahedral with [Fe.sub.2+] 25.5% and [Fe.sup.3+] = 74.5%, confirming that Vulture micas are particularly [Fe.sup.3+]-rich, as also found from previous investigations. Structure refinements using anisotropic displacement parameters were performed in space group C2/m and converged at 1.89 < R [less than or equal to] 3.17, 2.09 [less than or equal to] [R.sub.w] [less than or equal to] 3.43%. All of the analyzed micas belong to the 1M polytype but exhibit remarkable variations in the c parameter from 10.1569(4) to 10.2458(4) [Angstrom]. The chemical and structural parameters indicate that the studied micas can be divided into two groups: the first encompassing strongly dehydrogenated micas affected mainly by Ti-oxy [[sup.IV][M.sup.2+] + 2(OH) [left and right arrow] WTi4+ + 2[0.sup.2-] + [H.sub.2]] and [M.sup.3+]-oxy [[sup.IV] [M.sup.2+] + (OH)-[left and right arrow] W[M.sup.3+] + [O.sup.2-] + 1/2 [H.sub.2], with [M.sup.3+] = [Fe.sup.3+], [Al.sup.3+] substitutions. The second group consist of samples in which vacancy-bearing mechanisms, 2 [sup.VI][M.sup.2+] [left and right arrow] [sup.VI][Ti.sup.4+]+ [sup.VI] [cube root]and 3[sup.IV][M.sup.2+] [left and right arrow] 2'a[M.sup.3+] +[sup.VI][cube root] occur. Two distinct occurrences of wollastonite- and melilite-bearing rocks from Ricetto and Colle Fabbri, which are located in the central Italy Apennine Range, are referred to as 'paralavas' generated by melting and recrystallization of marly sediments 'likely due to coal fires' by Melluso et al. (2003). We submit data demonstrating that these conclusions are incorrect. Ricetto is clearly pyrometamorphic, as described by Capitanio et al. (2001, 2004). Colle Fabbri is clearly an igneous outcrop as described in Stoppa (1988). It is quite different in scale, field relationships, and chemistry, and thus Ricetto is irrelevant to its petrogenesis. The sediment mixing model of Melluso et al. (2003) does not relate to the Colle Fabbri field data. Furthermore, the Ricetto Miocene flysch country-rock and the Colle Fabbri enclosing Pliocene clays were not analyzed by Melluso et al. (2003). A limestone-shale mixing calculation using Sr and Nd isotopic data in Melluso et al. (2003, Tables 3-4) and a [sup.143]Nd/[sup.44]Nd ratio of 0.51213 for Apennine shales (op.cit. p. 1297) fails to account for the Colle Fabbri samples, which remain well clear of the hypothetical mixing line. Rocks of mantle origin, including micaceous kimberlites and Western Australia lamproites, plot in the variation field of Colle Fabbri and regionally associated igneous rocks. Colle Fabbri is but one of a series of similar igneous melilite-bearing and carbonatite occurrences that constitute the Intramontane Ultra-alkaline Province of central Italy (IUP), although Colle Fabbri does have unique features, as do other of these occurrences (Stoppa et al. 2003).

The Sulmona plain (central Italy) is an intramontane basin of the Abruzzi Apennines that is known in the literature for its high seismic hazard. We use extensive measurements of ambient noise to map the fundamental frequency and to detect the presence of geological heterogeneities in the basin. We perform noise measurements along two basin-scale orthogonal transects, in conjunction with 2-D array experiments in specific key areas. The key areas are located in different positions with respect to the basin margins: one at the eastern boundary (fault-controlled basin margin) and one in the deepest part of the basin. We also collect independent data by using active seismic experiments (MASW), down-hole and geological surveys to characterize the near-surface geology of the investigated sites. In detail, the H/V noise spectral ratios and 2-D array techniques indicate a fundamental resonance (f0) in the low-frequency range (0.35-0.4 Hz) in the Sulmona Basin. Additionally, our results highlight the important role that is played by the alluvial fans near the edge-sectors of the basin, which are responsible for a velocity inversion in the uppermost layering of the soil profile. The H/V ratios and the dispersion curves of adjacent measurements strongly vary over a few dozens of meters in the alluvial fan area. Furthermore, we perform 1-D numerical simulations that are based on a linear-equivalent approach to estimate the site response in the key areas, using realistic seismic inputs. Finally, we perform a 2-D simulation that is based on the spectral element method to propagate surface waves in a simple model with an uppermost stiff layer, which is responsible for the velocity inversion. The results from the 2-D modelling agree with the experimental curves, showing deamplified H/V curves and typical shapes of dispersion curves of a not normally dispersive site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
